I reckon Remus was on the train as a protector. I think Dumbledore wanted to take all precautions to ensure that all students were safe whilst Dementors were on the loose. Either that, or he couldn't afford other means on transport and he was too tired to apparate and walk to the school. | |

Well, I always thought that the reason behind why Remus Lupin was on the Hogwarts Express during Harry's third year was because of the whole "furry little problem" Remus had. The Hogwarts Express leaves Platform 9ľ on September 1st, which should be after he had his latest werewolf transformation. I'm sure that, as Hogwarts has probably been empty a while and no one was there to brew up some Wolfsbane Potion (as it is complicated to make and needs time to be made, etc.), he stayed wherever he was staying at the time and went through his transformation there. As Remus felt ill (thus why he missed teaching lessons every month), he was probably not feeling up to apparating to Hogsmeade due to his health and simply rode the train as that was free and more comfortable than what the Knight Bus would be.
*shrugs* That's what I always thought about Remus and the train. It makes sense in a way.

well lupin was really poor and he didn't have a way to get to hogwarts so he came on the train it was just a cowinsadance that harry and ron and hermoine got on to that cart of the train and that the dementors came in

He is on the train because the start of term was after a night of full moon and so he can sleep there. That's what is said at the German Harry Potter wikipedia.

I think Lupin was there to help protect against the Dementor's incase they showed up which they did. Or maybe it was because a full moon had just happened and he could not get to Hogwarts sooner.

I do have to agree with this. Dumbledore probably had something to do with him being on the train.
It it pretty strange that he was on there. Isn't he the first teacher mentioned to be on the train with the students on the way there?
I don't think he was there to protect any of the students, but that was probably what Dumbledore had in mind for him to do. Dumbledore probably knew that Harry would have been affected by the Dementors in the way he was.
Also, something else to ponder on..how did they end up in the same room? Was that random or what on how they ended up in the same room on the train.

They ended up in the same compartment becuase all the other compartment were full and didn't have room for 3 more students.
I don't know if Dumbledor could have predicted Harry would be affected as much as he was. I think that Lupin was on the train because he had just had his last transformation. I htink we are all some what right!

Considering I am an avid fan fiction writer, I like to believe in the stereotype that Remus could not afford transport to Scotland, therefore Dumbledore allowed him ride the train. As for the choice of apparating, I like to think it was just after a full moon and he wasn't yet strong enough to apparate safely.

I always wondered about that too... We were never told exactly how the professors transported to Hogwarts apart from being told they never took the train.
I would believe (like most schools) the Hogwarts professors arrived a few days (or weeks) early... Lupin must of under went transformation. Or... Like others are saying... He couldn't afford his own type of transportation.
