I Think it had to be because Dumbledore knew he would be able to fend off the Dementor's.

Maybe he wanted to protect Harry encase Sirius Black tried to attack Harry on the train. He probably also wanted to meet his best friend's son.

Well I've never thought about that. Thats a really good question. I just assumed he was there to watch over the kids or something.

maybe dumbledore told him to ride on the train to protect harry or something. or maybe cuz he felt like riding on it.

Well for those who missed it in the end lupin says himself that he is blacks friend AND he knows that black did not want harry killed. He wanted peter killed!

Was there a trial for Sirius or was he just thrown in Azkaban?

I think Lupin was on the train because maybe he just wanted to be at it. He didn't want to travel alone?
Maybe his employ, as the DADA techer, came in a hurry, just before the term was going to start and he just went by the train to make shure he got there in time?

Tbh, i dont think he knew any other way of arriving. He couldnt get an authorised Port-Key as he was a werewolf. He couldnt apparate becasue you cant into the grounds or castle.
He didnt have anyfloo powder because he doesnt have any money.
He cant afford the Knight Bus.

I bet he was fritend that sirius would reconize him and try to hurt him (in the book he told evryone he beleaved sirsus was a spy for "The Dark Lord"and also beleaved the storys about "peter's death") and thats why he was curld up in a cornor.

he was prolly on the train because Dumbledore wanted him to keep a close watch on Harry.
he knew dementors would be around and he wanted him to be safe.

it might be because he was tired and ill from the transformation, but i def think Dumbledore sent him there.
the dementors were under voldemorts control then and since there was nobody except students on the train, harry needed protection.

there was nobody on the train in OoTP prolly because by then Harry knew how to protect himself against dementors, duh

I think he was there to keep a close eye on Harry for Dumbledor.
