Lily/Severus are my favourite HP canon couple, I so prefer them to Lily/James! I cried a lot while reading the Prince's Tale. I think things might have been very different if he wouldn't have called her a mudblood, although the reasons for their separation go deeper. It's not necessarily that he called her mudblood, but more a matter of the people with which Snape was spending his time. Maybe if Snape and Lily were sorted into the same house their relationship could have grown.

While I prefer James/Lily, if Snape hadn't called her Mudblood I guess they could've ended up together. But Snape being a Slytherin and friends with all the Death Eaters to-be was probably too much of a strain on their friendship too, there was no way Lily would ever be friends with him while he was a Death Eater.

She could've fell in love with him. The chance gets higher if he abandoned his passion for the Dark Arts, as Rowling said. Snape wouldn't have become a Death Eater too. They could be happy together, started a family. Perhaps, Neville would be the Chosen One.

If he hadn't called her a mudblood I think she might have stayed with Snape as a friend, and maybe the relationship might have grown. She thought James was a git at that time, but when Snape called her that she backed away, not wanting anything to do with him.
But then she also knew he called others that and that would have a lot to do with their relationship. She was proud to be a muggleborn and knew he didn't care for them!

Lilys reasons for being mad at Snape werent only because of Snape calling her a mudblood, she was mad because the path that Snape was going down on and who he was hanging out with. I think even if Snape hadnt called her a mudblood she still would have ended up with James, and thus would have runined the relationship because Snape hated James with a passion.
