Um... he knew he couldn't. If anyone can kill him (that is still an IF as yet peeps) it is Harry. Remember the whole Phophesy thing. He is a smart enough man not to waste effort where he cannot win, and may indeed get killed...

To me when I first read that scene I didn't think Dumbledore even had time to do anything or at least come to the decision that he would have to Sacrifice Harry to kill Vold at any rate.
I think whatever Harry has to do, it won't be something anyone else CAN do. Meaning that there is a connection between Vold and himself that doesn't exist with anyone else. It's been demonstrated that something within Harry himself is the poison to Vold's very essance. I think its Harry's ability to be compassionate, to be merciful.
One abiltiy as far as powers go that I HAVe noticed he seems to excell at repelling things, weither it be teh Imperious curse or Dementors with the Expecto Patronus spell. I think he gets this ability from his Mother but the raw power of it from his Father combining two wizards abilities into one person who would have the strength and natural gifts to do what was needed to be done to destroy Voldemort. I thought it was pretty obvious too (that Harry has to kill him) but why? I mean why can't anybody else do it? And why would JKR think it's such a mystery when it's obvious to all of us that Harry has to do it? I guess she means we need to think of why specifically Harry has to do it. I voted I dont know and It's killing me.
Sure the prophesy says harry has to be the one, but who says Dumbledore told him the whole thing. He could be keeping something from him...  again.
Actually it'd be kinda cool is Tommyboy was the hero  .

I said that" Harry was the one to kill him" cause the prophesy said so. Dumbledore told harry about the prophesy so he knew that Harry was the one destined to kill him. Voldermort can't be the hero cause he's the bad guy. The bad guy always loses(at least in children's books) unless J.K.R decides to change it. Any ways Harry is the Main character. His name is in all the books and it is in his point of view. He can't die. If he dies, in whose point of view will the story be. | |

It really sucked that Dumbledore couldn't kill him. Does anybody think that if someone were to try to kill Voldemort directly that the spell would rebound to the caster? Maybe that is another reason why Dumbledore didn't try to kill Voldemort. Only Harry can stop the madness. At least that's what the prophecy said. I cannot wait for the sixth book. Maybe it can answer some of my questions. | |

There is no question - Harry has to fulfill his destiny and kill Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore hardly had the oppurtunity to kill him. The whole point of the entire series is that Harry must defeat Voldemort, he is the chosen one. | |

Ok, well like the last 554 voters all agreed that Harry has to and is suppose to kill Voldemort, but we musn't forget that Voldemort choose Harry over Nevil, I think Nevil still has a very important part to play, I think that in Harry's next confrontion of Voldemort that Nevile will be there and get in the way, some how breaking harry and having harry sacrifice himself for nevile, or one of his friends. Some thing or someone is going to be there and interfere with harry taking on Voldemort, and therefor weaking or nearly killing harry, i don't know just a complex thought | |
