Hogwarts RPG Name: Margaret Jacqueline Atkinson Morris Fifth Year | Potter’s Princess A+ FangGirl Okie dokie, so since Christy hasn't been posting any lessons for quite a while, I'll try to keep on teaching you lot a bit of Portuguese. I'm sorry if I'm not half as good as she is. I'd be thankful if any of you could give me some ideas on what you would like to know and such. Lesson 3 Animals (For some of them, there are two ways to say a specific name, depending on the gender. So, in front of the english noun you'll see how we call the males and then the females.) Cat - Gato/Gata Dog - Cão/Cadela Bird - Pássaro Parrot - Papagaio Fish - Peixe Bunny - Coelho Codfish - Bacalhau Owl - Coruja Snake - Cobra Serpent - Serpente Stag - Veado Wolf - Lobo Rat - Ratazana Mouse - Rato Dolphin - Golfinho Fly - Mosca Spider - Aranha Lion - Leão/Leoa Monkey - Macaco Plants Tree - Árvore Flower - Flor Bush - Arbusto Rose - Rosa Tulip - Tulipa Carnation - Cravo I'm going to edit this post once I remember more plants and animals or if anyone requests the translation to a specific one.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Cassandra Evans | Poofer Ola everyone I would like to learn some Portuguese. Can you believe that my parents are both Portuguese and I can’t speak or write a word of the language.
Understand it i can because most of the time they both speak to me in Portuguese, and when my mother is watching her soaps (We get a lot of Portuguese channels at home) I sometimes sit down with her and understand most of what is being said.
All my siblings can speak it a little and I think it’s time for me to learn it too.
So I’m going to learn the lessons right now.
By the way i was looking around this forum and guess what... I can understand what you guys wrote down a little.

Apparently we've been neglecting this thread a bit too much but I'm going to try to make it up for you lot and hopefully this will be up and running with a bit of help from all of you ^^ Lesson 6 Random Expressions Name - Nome Country - País My name is ... - O meu nome é ... I am (name) - Eu sou a/o (nome) Note: while males say 'o', females say 'a' I am ... years old - Eu tenho ... anos. I live in (country) - Eu vivo em (país). I like ... - Eu gosto de ... I love you - Eu amo-te. Merry Christmas - Bom Natal Note: if you want to translate 'Bom Natal' word by word, it actually means Good Christmas. Happy New Year - Feliz Ano Novo I have ... - Eu tenho ... My favourite book is ... - O meu livro preferido é ... Note: this is the most common form to say what is your favourite object, movie, book, etc. If you want to say what your favourite movie is, all you have to do is replace 'livro' with the word 'filme'. This rule applies to everything else you want to say. I am hungry - Eu tenho fome. I am thirsty - Eu tenho sede. Note: Most times we do not say 'I', 'you, 'he', etc, since, due to the endings of the verbs, they aren't necessary. Per example, if I wanted to say 'I live in Portugal', I'd say 'Vivo em Portugal' instead of 'Eu vivo em Portugal'. However, both forms are correct.

Olá. I have a question about the animal words. For the animals where the male and female names are different, if you have, say, a boy dog and a girl dog and you want to refer to both of them, would you call them "cãos" or "cadelas" or would it be easier to just say "cão e cadela"?
Also, are there words for "skunk" or " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle"?

On that case, you can either say "cão e cadela" ooor the plural for male dogs, which is "cães". We have some strange grammar rule where some words that end up "ão" turn into "ães" in the plural though others have "ãos", per example "mão" (hand) turns into "mãos", but "pão" (bread) turns into "pães. Don't ask me why it's like that because I sincerely don't know lol
Aaaaand it'd be Adolescente Tartaruga s Mutantes Ninja (we just call them Tartarugas Ninja) As for skuuunk, it's texugo ^^
Anymore questions, twinnie? ^^

It's two years since someone has written here... I hope this'll be seen.
So, I want to learn Portuguese online. Can you suggest any free websites that you know teaches well? (And I already know Spanish, so it doesn't necessarily have to teach in English... though of course English is better.)
Obrigada!

Obrigada! Livemocha is the only good free site I know to learn languages. It's a community, though. You take a few lessons, then you have to complete certain assignments, but you have to wait until someone else corrects your work. Some assignments are short translations and for others you have to record yourself reading a short passage. The problem is sometimes no one corrects your stuff, buuuuuut you can still learn a little.
Hope that helps!
