And English/Portuguese translations as well, but that would make the title too big

Anyway, have you ever wanted to know how to say a specific word or sentence in Portuguese or perhaps you know it in this language but not in English? If that's happening to you, be free to post here what you want to know and someone who knows the answer will soon tell you what you want to know

Apart from the usual SS rules, I have one more to apply to this though... Don't be shy and ask everything you want to know, no matter how obvious or silly you think your question might be. Sometimes those are the most important questions ^^

That would be "Eu estou bem" but since we don't usually use 'I' when speaking or writing, it would be correct to just say "Estou bem".

Olá! (Please don't hit me should this be wrong :-) )

How'd you say "Thanks for the card - it's nice to hear from you"?

Hehe, no worries, it is right

Now, as for your translation request, well, first of all, saying thank you will depend on whether you're male or female. If you're a female then you should say "Obrigada", but if you're male then "Obrigado". However, there's no problem whatsoever if you switch them.

As for the word card, that would depend on the kind of card itself. Usually we say "postal" for the ones with a picture on the front and a message on the back and "cartão" for credit cards and the likes. Just google images of the two words and you'll see the difference.

Now that that's settled, here's how you should say it:
Obrigado/a pelo cartão/postal - foi bom ter notícias tuas. (Technically speaking, this means Thank you for the card - it was good to have news from you. We don't have any expression that can be translated exactly into what you've asked for).

I hope that helped If you have any further questions, just go ahead and shoot them

So, after 3 years of inactivity, I'm bringing this thread to life.

What are the Spanish articles "el/la" in Portuguese? I've been reading Portuguese if I come across, and there are way too many "e"s and "o"s. I suppose "o" is one of the article, right?

Also, does la tilde (accent in English?) (´), (`) and (^) make any difference in pronunciation? I know already that (~) strengthens that syllable. Do you have any other tildes? Also, when you say for example Carvalho, you read it as "Carvalio (or Carvalyo)", right?
Thanks a lot!

Those are some hard questions you've posed there (well, the tildes one, which we call acentos). Let's see if I can answer them

About the articles, for us it's "o" and "a". "o" is used for masculine names, whilst "a" is used for feminine names. The word "e", however, is our "and".

Concerning your other question, yes, they do change pronunciation. However, I don't believe there's a set rule on how each of them works, seeing as it depends on the syllables in question. I could be wrong, though, so if anybody can give a clearer explanation here, I too would be very welcome. As for our tildes, we have (~), (^), (´) and (`). Also, in Brazilian Portuguese, (¨) is sometimes used too. I think that nowadays its usage isn't common, though.

Regarding the lh sound, well, it's not exactly like that. I'd tell you here what it sounds like, but it's virtually impossible. So, I searched a video and found this: Portuguese pronunciation video: the sound of LH - YouTube. While it does not give the example of carvalho, it does show that one sound, which I think is important as it is probably the Portuguese sound foreigners struggle most with. Do note that the video is in Brazilian Portuguese, so the words are slightly different from European Portuguese. Nevertheless, I think you can grasp the lh sound easily there.

If you need any more help please tell us! :3

Oh, thanks a lot! That video was quite useful.

When it is written, I can understand Portuguese to some degree... but the pronunciation is still a little strange to me. I'll keep watching the national Portugal channel to get used to it.

Thanks again!

You're quite welcome! If there's anything else we can help you with, just tell us ^^

I know what you mean about pronunciation. It's always one of the hardest bits about learning a new language, I think. Good luck with that!
