okay, in one of the books it says something like:"you are not to use magic in the presence of muggles!" close enough, but i know it wasn't jsut like that.... that's why harry got in trouble fot the patronus, because he did it in a muggle neighborhood where a number of muggles could see, and it was in front of Dudley...
IckleRonnyPrefectLuvrr: Hermy fixed Harry's glasses on the train, where no one BUT wizards was around, at least in the movie... i think in the book, didn't Arthur Weasley fix Harry's glasses in Diagon Alley? Yes, i think Arthur did, not hermione

Well, I always thought that students cannot perform any kind of magic in the Muggle World so I was a bit surprised. But if they could perfom spells which don't hurt anyone... so why they can't use it for... I dunno... some little useful things which are helped by magic while they're at Hogwarts...

Although I believe that this was another of Rowling's tiny mistakes - every writer accidentally makes a mistake - I also happen to think that this [i[might[/i], just might not be counted as breaking Wizarding law, because:
  • Harry was not in the presence of A Muggle.
  • He could persuade Muggle that he had been using a flashlight.
  • And the Ministry might even understand that he [u[could[/u[ not do his Homework otherwise.

But then, it could be a mistake after all, you know.

Always and Forever TP’s,
Maxie

yes, i noticed this too. he's not allowed to do majic. an obvious mistake, although maybe they just wanted a good begining like how harry's wand shines really bright and the movie starts.

Although he's not allowed to do magic he was doing it in secret or trying to so maybe that's why it wasn't noticable. It was out in public or a big huge spell or something unlike the aunt marge incident so perhaps that's why he didn't get in trouble even though he did break the law but hey he wants to learn new spells over the summer and who hasn't.

Yeah
I agree. Plus if it was homework, he was probably allowed to do it.

if the ministry didn't send a letter out to him right after he used it. why did they in his second year, when Dobby used the hovering charm??

In the book Harry wasn't doing homework... it's one of the things they changed.

It's a pretty good point... but I mean, the ministry didn't like properly punish him for blowing up Aunt Marge by accident, like he said, "The Ministry doesn't send people to Azkaban for blowing up their aunts!"
Also I don't think something as small as using a spell for a light is that criminal.

I got really mad over this. PoA is my favorite movie, but Alfonso should know enough to follow the most important rule in the series! There's no explanation for it, purely a director's, and/or writer's, mistake!

i noticed that to. but look at the wired haired director, alfonso. he did a horrible job. they didn't even wear uniforms in the whole movie.

I think him not being allowed to do magic refers to doing magic on muggles. I dont think its wrong to do magic to get his work done.
