| He really should be performing spells, it's completely braking the rules, now something like a flashlight would be more acceptable. |

| Maybe 'Lumos' doesn't count as breaking the law, coz he pulls his wand out in the books and says 'Lumos' 2.. |

| Oh yeah... I forgot about that, it's true that he could probably just convince someone it was a flashlight, so I could see that. I had completely forgotten. |

He couldnt hold his wand, a torch, hold the covers over him and have the book.
Strickly speaking he shouldnt of done it. Its like in book 1 when Hagrid gave Dud a pigs tail. The Minestry would of known he did magic cause as soon as its done they know. |

| The law isn't upheld though. JK said on her site even Lily was prone to disobeying it and even Fudge said they don't lock kids up for doing spells.
The Statute of Secrecy is designed to keep muggles from knowing of magical existance. Performing a spell in his bedroom isn't breaking that law because it's not in a muggles prescence whereas the patronus in OotP was in front of Dudley and that's why they came down like a ton of bricks on him. |

| Oh thanks for that one!! But when Hagrid did the spell on Dud it was compleatly out the way of Muggles but he should really be doing spells like he said. He was expelled as we all know so isnt allowed. |

| I think it was allowed because it was homework. I'm assuming it was homework. So, if it was, he'd need to do the spell. |

| I agree. He was practising it so it wwas allowed. But I still think that lumos does not count as a spell that will get you in trouble... |

| I think that you can only get in trouble if it's more advanced magic, hence using it at the disadvantage of muggles. i think it was cool beginning to the movie.
and if they dont throw u in azkaban for blowing up ur aunts, they wont for conducting the Lumos spell. |

| I was thinking the same thing. You already know now.
And when he wasn't doing the spell, couldn't you see the book? He needed no light to see his book. |

| I think Harry could do Lumos Maxima because of the spell itself. It doesn't really harm anyone, muggle or wizarding world. It's basically a flash of light. I'm sure if the spell was either being done in front of a muggle or harming someone, then it would be considered an offense. Things only take a turn when people start getting hurt. Plus I bet the homework or spells they practice away from Hogwarts are muggle friendly and most likely have rules and restrictions under them. There's probably tons of things to follow like do the spell when no one's around, if you live with a muggle family....who hates you....Harry Potter that is. |
