You may. For example I acted out stereotypically a Slytherin, but the Admins do mix us up, so it is random but also based your quiz.

Sorting can take a couple of hours, maybe even a day or two, since it's all done manually by the admins, so it depends on how busy they are. As to how, you will receive a PM indicating which house you have been sorted into. And also, youor user name color will change from aquamarine to the color of the house you have been sorted into.

Although you have 10 posts you need to wait (aprox. an hour) for the site to make you a member, then you can get sorted, then you have to wait for the answer.

So a lot of waiting but we apologise for it

That's correct. But if you posted by following the rules of the thread, you shouldn't have a problem staying with those ten posts (or more) and the system will upgrade you no problem.

Those are called avatars and for newbies the limit is an 80 x 80px avatar. Now that you are a member, you can an avatar that can be 100 x 100pxs.

No, but you do have to have at least 10 posts in order to be upgraded to a member.

There are messages all over the site which announce that the sorting is open. Simply click one of these announcements and it will take you to the sorting quiz. (Or click this link and it will take you to the announcement! - Sorting Quiz announcement. Answer all the questions on the quiz and submit it, and an admin will notify you of which house you are placed into and give you further instructions about the roleplay (this can sometimes take a few days.)

That's alll there is to it! Anyone who is a member and not sorted can take the quiz as long as they have at least 10 valid posts and their user name is turquoise, not brown. (If it is still brown and you have 10 posts, just wait for it to change color then try to take the sorting quiz).
