It's Voldemort's soul (or a part of it at least) living in Quirrel. And it just so happens that Voldie chooses (perhaps) that it manifests its self in that particular way.

Hm. Back of Quirrel's head, indeed. I have been also wondering about that- Perhaps there was no other place to at least make contact with the world. Hands used too much and too exposed, feet- eh, no need to consider. the rest is covered with clothing, so... back of the head then. No other place, Don't you agree?

Well, it was Voldemort's head. So I suppose it just manifested in the same place on Quirrell. Or it was the easiest thing to cover up, as well as being the most dignified. If I was Voldemort I'd rather manifest on someone's head than on their stomach.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I never understood if Quirrel was on the evil side himself or if he was only evil when Voldemort "possessed" him, and good before he had Voldie on the back of his head? xD

Well what I've heard is that Voldemort met Quirrel sometime before. Voldemort asked Quirrel if he could got into his body because he was not strong enough after he tried and killed Harry. He need to live on someone, that's why he tried to get the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone, so he could get his own body quicly with the elixir of life.

I think what happened was that it was kind of like a horcrux. Part of Voldemorts soul went into Quirrel. What he did was change it so that nobody could tell just by touching Quirrel so he made a more obvious sign and covered it up with Quirrel's turban.

It was recently revealed on Pottermore that Quirrel indeed was a horcrux! So I think that answers your question.

It would not have been too hard for Voldemort to take over Quirrel. From what I could tell Quirrel was weak minded, just the sort Voldemort would go (And those who were ofthe bllying kind) for if he needed to control them ease.
