That thing also bothered me but if I would to choose, I would pick the original one, the British version of JK Rowling. I've read the American version of HP1 but with HP2 and 3, the British ones.
They wanted the books to appeal to as many people as possible. Seeing as it's a child's book, why would loads of children know English expressions? It wasn't really about giving the books an English flavour, it was about selling as many copies as possible. It's a mainstream book. It kind of sucks that they had to change it, but it had to be done.
The Philosopher's Stone is how J. K. Rowling wrote it and the rest of the world sees it except the U.S. It is the same story, just with a different title. The American publisher just thought the title was a bit boring, so they changed it to Sorcerer.
