Talking Devil's Snare

In SS, Harry, Ron, and Hermione battle with a Devil's Snare. How do they defeat it in the end?

"Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare...
It's deadly fun...
But will sulk in the sun! That's it! Devil's Snare hates sunlight!"

And in OOTP, a Devil's Snare killed Bode. HOWEVER...How could a Devil's Snare plant survive in the brightly lit room of St. Mungo's?

How? Any thoughts?

That's a very good observation! But you are remembering the movie not the book.

Devil's Snare kills its victims by constriction and reacts poorly to fire.

In the film version Hermione recites a poem about Devil's Snare:

Devil's Snare, Devil's Snare
It's deadly fun
But will sulk in the sun.

She and Harry relax and it lets them pass through, but she has to send sunlight at it for it to release Ron.

In the book it has appeared twice in the series.

First, in SS, it was Professor Sprout's protection against the theft of the Soccer's/Philosopher's Stone. It proved an obstacle to Harry, Ron and Hermione and Hermione defeats it by setting it on fire.

Second, in OoTP, potted Devil's Snare is sent to Unspeakable Broderick Bode while he is in St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries (possibly by Lucius Malfoy, but almost certainly by somebody working for Lord Voldemort) . Healer Strout, who is in charge of Bode, mistakes the deadly plant for a Flitterbloom and it later strangles the comatose Bode.

So if the plant can really only be killed by fire it makes sense that the plant would be able to kill Bode and the lights in the hospital would have no effect on it.

I get the movies and the books swicthed around all the time.

I always think Harry is doing magic in his room in PoA and why doesn't he get into trouble for that but then I remember (or some one else reminds me, lol) that in the book it's just a flashlight - he's not doing magic...

The books and the movies have had many differences. We must not confuse them. As Rita Skeeter imbelishes what she sees, so do movie producers. When in doubt, refer to the book.

I too get the movies mixed up with the books, but that's why after every HP movie I see, if i disagree with anything, I always have my book right beside me.

The reason because their not the same ( i'm assuming), is because of budget problems or scenes they think are boring which aren't!

Hm...That is a very good question. I think that it must have been concealed from the most damaging rays of sunlight. I think that just with any delicate plant, Devil's Snare can't exist in direct sunlight. So even though St. Mungo's was brightly lit, it wasn't direct or natural sunlight, so it was able to thrive.
