i do think she was jealous of all the attention Lily got since her parent were muggles and she was the witch in the family. she also acted like she hated magic and i think that was because she was so jealous.

I think she was jealous because her sister was a witch and she wasn't and because of this she pretended like she didn't have a sister. I also think that Harry was a reminder of her sister so she refused to act as if she liked him.

I do think she was jealous. I mean most sisters who are that close in age are usually somewhat close and the lilly finds out she is a witch and goes away to this school all year leaving her sister behind so i think thats why she would call her a freak and ignor her

Well as you read in the last book, Petunia actually WANTED to go Hogwarts. She begged Dumbledore. But when she was denied, she just got all petty.

Well I don't think it was about being petty. Lily got to dive into a whole new exciting world with very different rules from our own. I mean I would be upset if my sister got into Hogwarts and I didn't.

It was like Petunia was told she didn't have whatever it was that made Lily special enough to get into Hogwarts, and it really hurt her.

The only reason She jealous is because Lilly was getting all her parents attention. She isin't jealous about the whole magic thing, it's jus she was used to getting all the attendion, immeding disliking Harry because of her hatrid to her sister.

i think she was jelous of lily. maybe they had a good sisterly bond wwith her and when lily got her letter she'd be leaving to hogwarts. plus all the attention lily would recieve would contribute to that.

I belive its a mixture of jealousy and fear, fear because humans naturally fear what they do not know and as a muggle Petunia can never truley know the magic that barged into her life.


Imagine having a beautiful sister whilst you are not. Then a letter emerges opening a new world.

Petunia is a muggle and cannot do magic whilst her sister practices this she cannot, there parents naturally are overjoyed and beam with pride for Lily's accomplishments doing things Petunia could only dream about.


This...thing this MAGIC portrudes in Petunia's life shoving her in the shadow's of her sister's accomplishments as the parents fawn over her with pride.


Petunia begins to fear this magic as it stretches doing the things thought impossible by muggles with and can hurt you.


This can instill fear, fear at this magic her sister does breaking the barrier of all things normal Petunia holds dear like knowing a car can never float. But with a bit of latin and a flick of a stick it can, breaking her holds on her life and reality as she knew it. And could probebly kill them all with just some latin and a wand wave.


Whats worst of all the family is PROUD of a WITCH in the family, abominations of nature according to the witch burning days and jealousy she cannot do anything to rival it and gain the pride of her parents.


So Petunia strives to be everything Lily Potter nee Evans could'nt be.

Until years later the dreaded abnormailty kills your sister just as you once belived it would.
AND the cow has the nerve to dump there son on the doorstep.

Magic,was an abomination and it rolled off the boy on there door step,this thing taking place inside of him making him abnormal and freakish...thing.


And naturally a storage for things is a cupboard.


It dreggs up memories of how Lily was prided for being freakish and abnormal and consantly overshadowing Petunia all these memories brought up by the boy.


Hate and fear of magic grows to ridiculous proportions as we all know how Lily-ish Harry is (the opposite to supposedly arragont James Potter) which furthers the hate.

I come from a family of 3 sisters and there is (it seems) to always be a bit of a competitiveness between us. We have a fantastic relationship and love each other very much, but sisters will be jealous from time to time. The greatest way to show jealousy, is by bashing the things you are jealous of. Petunia would have jumped at the opportunity to go to Hogwarts. And she doesn't do a very good job of hiding it.

Yeah, I grew up in a family with a brother and a sister and theres all of competition even if its just sport or something stupid and there probely a higher level of that and it turned to her hating Lily. I think she was jealous of Lily being accepted into Hogwarts. I think she was jelous that Lily could do all that stuff and she couldn't and Harry was a constent reminder of that because she couldn't even look him in the eyes or talk to him kindly.

Yes I do think that Aunt Petunia was jealous of her sister because she didnt get to go to Hogwarts like her sister and it sounds to me that her parents were more proud of Lily than they were of Petunia.

Petunia thought of Lily as a freak but maybe deep inside her she wanted to go to hogwarts too. and their parents attention were all centered to lily, she might have wanted to draw her parents attention too but she can't surpass Lily, so she just thought about Lily being a freak...
