I don't think it's any of them. I think it's just an arch which traps spirits and memories in the wrong world. (the spirits are trapped in the mortal world when they should be in heaven/hell)

I think it's both a portal to the afterlife, but also a sort of death sentence punishment thing. The veil is really interesting. It's so mysterious. The seats around it provoke so much thought! I hated how it looked in the OotP movie, but oh well.

I think it is a doorway to the afterlife, but it is very cleverly tied in the same categories as the thestrals, only those people who have seen death can hear the voices that are emanating from it, and i imagine it is only the voices of those you have seen die. In the text, Hermione, Ginny, and Ron don't hear anything, but Harry, Luna, and Neville can hear the voices. I think it was a very clever and subtle tie in to the thestrals

I think it's a "gateway to death", so to speak. Kind of like a portal between the mortal and (immortal?) worlds. The Unspeakables must study the properties of the veil and perhaps whether they can retrieve something from it...

I think it's like a doorway into the afterlife. Sirius's body couldn't be recovered, because if anybody went in there they would die too. That's why I think Remus stopped Harry from running after Sirius, because he didn't want Harry to die too. Or you can use the simple explanation, and say it's a mystery! It is in the Department of Mysteries after all I assume Ministry wizards are still studying it, so nobody except J. K. Rowling knows!
