Yeah, I thought she was talking about Dumbledore, too -- but it might be someone we don't know about that we'll find out about later.

There is definitely a lack of specific detail about the statement "he's below" regarding the pronoun's antecedant, but i don't know why tom would care about sirius, really. If tom wanted to kill sirius or anybody (for the most part), he would have no difficulty doing so.
Bellatrix had just passed DD and knew that that's teh one person whom Tom fears and dreads. So, it seems like she was warning him (especially as DD shows up not a moment later) rather than declaring that Sirius went into the veil or is still downstairs.

I kind of guessed early on he would go. I mean, Harry's the dumping ground, isn't he? He found someone who loved him and who he loved, which would have made him happy. Harry is not SUPPOSED to be happy. So, Sirius had to go.
Also, after what he did to Snape-well-I wasn't as upset as I could have been. But it was still a shame he died.

I was so upset...normally, I reread the book RIGHT after finishing it the first time. But with the 5th book, I had to wait two weeks before starting it, and now that I'm at the end, I'm really pacing myself so that I won't get as upset...I can't even listen to matchbox twenty's "Unwell" without getting upset because it reminds me too much of Sirius. I agree with the person who said it sucked since Rowling really played up their relationship, and we finally got to see just how close they really are. But...that's the way things go, I guess. Still, I think he deserved a better death.
[continues muttering something about dumbledore, things worse than death, and that the dead never really leave us]

This doesn't belong here. I'm moving this to the Books Forum. Please make sure you locate your topics in the correct forum, especially when discussing Book 5.

To the opposite of most of you here, I didn't get very upset when I first read Sirius's death. It happened so fast. JKR really succeeded in showing how death can come abruptly and show no mercy during battle. After I finished OotP I re-read all four previous books and then OotP again and this time I really felt it full strength. I hope Harry will turn to Lupin now that Sirius is dead, because he’s his father last remaining true friend (Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, doesn’t count).

Aww angel that really sucks...:-(
And yeah, I also agree with the person up there that said "I hope that he'll turn to Lupin" I really think he will . . . I'm surprised Harry isn't a delinquent by now, he's had no father figure in his life.

I was sooooooooooooooooo (not enough room for all the 'o's upset about Sirius, and I still am. I hope he becomes closer with Lupin because he's my second favorite but the real reason is that they're both going to need each other now. Lupin is gonna need to keep Harry in check and Harry needs to make sure Lupin doesn't get to depressed.

I cried a lot too. My friend told me, cuz we got it at the same and the first thing we did was qiuckly flip through it and she saw it and just stood there and I was like 'What?' and she showed me and she's like Sirius dies!! I'm like no, he can't, maybe he almost dies, we believed that sp much that when he actually died I was so sad I cried then I stopped and finished rerading and I cried again when Harry was back at Hogwarts in Dumbledore's office and he was smashing things and stuff, I cried all after that and whenever someone mentions it I get teary eyed and I start blabbing on and on about how he shouldn't have died and stuff..... I feel bad for hairy cuz now he has no good family left, just the Dursleys...

So many of you all cried...it was sad when he died...but I didn't even realize he had died until the chapter ended....all the way throughout the book it was like everyone was coming close to death..Mr. Waesley, Hagrid, McGonagall, Ron, Hermione....and then came Sirius who I didn't even think had died when he died.....in all of the confusion I guess I just did't have time to build up tears...if he had like whispered the last few words of a dying man to Harry then I may have been a little more sad...... I have read OotP twice and my reaction was different on both readings.
The first time around, I didn't get very upset when I read Sirius's death. Like you said, it happened so fast. JKR really succeeded in showing how death can come abruptly and show no mercy during battle, as she said she wanted to show.
After I finished OotP I re-read all four previous books and then OotP again. This time I really felt it full strength. As I knew what was coming, it wasn't as fast and sudden as it was at the first reading. So I didn't cry on my first reading, but I sure did the second time.
I hope Harry will turn to Lupin now that Sirius is dead, because he’s his father last remaining true friend (Peter Pettigrew, aka Wormtail, doesn’t count). What do you think?

That theory sounds good... and makes perfect sense, Sirius would want to fake his death so he could get out of the house and spy so he probably got the rest of the order to help him.
But, then at the same time JK said he really is gone, and why would she have cried if it wasn't true? I want him to come back more than anything, but I think he's gone.
I think I have to agree with the rest of the posters, Sirius really is gone and "he is below" were referring to Dumbledore.

Maybe she cried from Harry's point of view? I'm kind of like that-the death itself doesn't mean all that much, but you know how it's going to affect others. Maybe she knew how much of a hole it would leave in Harry.
Certainly one would think that the veil is going to come into it again.

That is a brilliant theory! But when she said he is below i heard that some poeple thaought that they were talking about dumbledor ... and another thing lupin says to harry when he tries to go after sirius that he is gone and there is no way to get him back but maybe there is something he dosent know about thwere sirius really is ..

Yeah, that was really a bit curious. How (in)famous is the veil? It's in the Dept of Mysteries, so the general public shouldn't know about it, yet Lupin seemed to understand the implications of falling through the veil. Dumbledore, indubitably, understands and has a good deal of knowledge about it, but because experiments on it are not done (or else everybody would understand death), maybe the actual rammifications are unknown.
At this point, Dumbledore knows enough about it to know that Sirius is gone (as he tells Harry). It's unlikely that Dumbledore would lie to hurt harry now for some other advantage later because Dumbledore goes at length describing how he let others be hurt, theoretically, so that harry could be happy and somewhat unknowing of his fate for years.

i, for one, dont believe sirius is gone forever, if not for the fact that his name's connection with birth/death/rebirth...
