Default Wand Fitting

Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

In front of the counter there is the empty space that is designated as the fitting area. Here is where wands are fitted. After being measured by the magical measuring tape, you will be assisted by a worker who will then endeavor to fit you with your perfect wand and start pulling boxes from the shelves, which stretch back impossibly far and up so high that even the tallest people have to tip their head back to see the tops.

Long sliding ladders are attached to every stretch of shelves, and the wandmakers make great use of these to reach those wands which are tucked away high up. There seems to be a filing system of sorts, some kind of method to the madness, though most of the boxes are unmarked. Is it a colour code? Or is it shape? size? smell? Something else? Well you'll never know unless you get a job here. Luckily, and out of sheer necessity, these shelves have been bespelled so that wandboxes are not in danger of flying everywhere due to errant spells cast by children wielding their new wands.

Text Cut: Wand Fitting Instructions - PLEASE READ FIRST!
Instructions

⌦ In order to receive a wand, please take the WAND QUIZ ONCE for the character who is here for a wand. Then, post your character being measured by the "magical measuring tape" ONCE in this thread. This thread is not one where you should interact with others, one post here please! It serves as our queue!

See the example post below, or look at other posts in this thread from previous terms.

Text Cut: Example Post
Jessica went into Ollivanders with more than her share of nerves, it was time for her first wand! The eleven year old made her way over to the measuring area and waited for her turn. Soon enough the measuring tape reached her and began zipping about, straightening with a snap and measuring out her height and, when she held her arms out, she watched it take a measurement of how long they were too. Fun! Did that mean her wand would be as big as her whole arm?

The girl stepped away from the measuring area and she eagerly waited for the shopkeeper to find her wand.

⌦ Please take the SORTING QUIZ first and wait to be placed in your house before taking the wand quiz! Your house effects your final wand in our quiz! This goes for current members who are re-sorting too, though you may take the quiz in advance if you know what your new house will be.

⌦ You may role play the magical measuring tape, but you may not role play for the shopkeepers. Ollivander does not work here!

⌦ After submitting the wand quiz and posting in this thread, please wait for a shop worker to assist you and your character in finding their perfect wand match. You must RP to get your wand.

⌦ Please do not stretch the wand fitting experience out too long, it should not take more than three tries at an absolute maximum to find your character's match.

If we run out of time to complete the RP with you by the end of the RP summer, we will PM or VM your wand result to you, provided you have posted in this thread and responded to our efforts to interact with you.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM Tegz and she'll try to answer your questions as quickly and efficiently as she can.

⌦ Have fun!

Wafer? What was a wafer? Bernadette exchanged a puzzled glance with the cat and gave a shrug for an answer to the wand guy. "Okay," she hummed, selecting the wand without a box. This one, she simply pointed at the cat, waiting to see if it would levitate, or come closer to her, or anything.

Much to her surprise, a beautiful bouquet of delicate flowers and green foliage popped out of the end of the wand and landed on the counter. The flowers were fragrant forget-me-nots, columbine, lily of the valley, and some wonderful smelling herbs, like catnip and mint. "Oh yay!" Bernie cheered, scooping up the flowers to give them a sniff and a nuzzle. She didn't drop the wand this time, but instead gave it an appraising look. Maybe it would do this again?

Or rather, the measurements it had taken of the young girl in front of him. Ah, he had tried a wand on a youngster earlier that just had not been right for them, but it seemed like it might be a good fit for this one, and if not would certainly narrow down the process.

He went to the shelves, looking for the particular box and returning a few moments later with it under one arm. He smiled encouragingly at the girl then offered it to her, lifting its lid so she could take the wand out.

"Give this one a swish."

"The MOST readiest I've ever been for anything EVER," Cecelia said seriously, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she realized that this was happening. THIS WAS IT! She watched curiously as the man looked at her measurements, wondering if he maybe saw some greatness in them. She was SURE they had to say SOMETHING good about her. She had a LOT of potential as a powerful witch, she was sure of it.

When he went to the shelves, Cecelia shifted from foot to foot, finding it hard to stand still with the amount of excitement coursing through her veins. Luckily she didn't have to wait around for TOO long and before she knew it, she was being handed a WAND. Merlin...

Reaching into the box, Cecelia pulled out the wand and gave it a swish like she'd done to sticks and spoons and her toothbrush, even, from the time she was small. Only THIS time she was using a REAL wand and the results weren't imagined at ALL. A GUUUUST of wind seemed to rush through the space around them, blowing back her hair and any papers lying around and making her eyes go WIDE. "Whoa!" Was that supposed to happen? "THAT WAS SO COOL!"

Ooooh good. A new wand. Phoebe accepted it with both hands, clutching it carefully as she examined it. Polished to perfection, nice weight in her hand, and it didn't feel like someone else's wand, like when she held her mum or dad's. That was a very good start.

But could it light Uncle Scan's pants on fire?

Phoebe gave it a solid flick, producing a flock of paper butterflies in a riot of color, but absolutely no fire. What a shame. "Um, sir? This one doesn't make fire. I'm looking for a fire wand." Too bad, because it was very nice.

Nem wasn't sure about this whole fragile business, in the sense that having a fragile wand didn't seem very smart, but the wand had done magic for them and it had definitely felt like it was the right one, so they weren't even going to hint at trying a different one. Also, this wand was apparently within a quarter of an inch in length of the wand Pax had been matched with, which was a nice touch.

Elder, though. Wand of elder, never prosper, was the phrase going through Nem's head right at that moment, but more because it was one of those ingrained superstitions than because it was something they truly believed. They actually quite liked the idea of owning a wand made of elder, in spite of the saying. Nodding, they said simply, "Alright."

When it came to the issue of the money, Nem stepped aside and joined Pax. This was Dad's department.

That was his cue. Yes, hello, this was the father.

Jake stepped forward as Nem moved over to stand with Pax, already pulling a heavy money bag out from his inside pocket. This was going to be the biggest blow to their vault, at least in regards to the twins; preparing for four newborn babies had already done the majority of the damage to their family bank account. The rest of the twins' school things had come from his (helpful and/or generous) friends with older kids, or bought pre-owned and so at a very welcome discount, but the wands just weren't something he or Becca were willing to skimp on. They had made sure that they would have the funds to buy two brand new ones.

All the same, Jake had kind of been hoping that both kids' wands would come at the cost of that nine galleon starting price, but, alas, it was not meant to be.

Still. Not like he was buying FOUR wands at once, right? Ha. Hahaha. Haha... ha... help.

"No thank you," Jake said to the wandmaker, as he set about scooping gold coins out from the money bag and stacking them in columns of five on the counter. Five stacks, and then a single galleon to make twenty-six. "Just the wands for today." He had a couple of spare wrist holsters somewhere in the house that he could dig out and resize for the gi-... for the kids, and he definitely owned several half-used tins of wand polish that they could take with them to school. He was being smart about this and everything.

Jake offered the wandmaker a slightly stressed out smile. "Thank you for your help." Just in case either of his offspring had neglected to do the manners thing. Rascals.

*When the measuring tape went all around he tried his best to not squirm. Once it was all over Jacen let out a sigh thankful that was over. The next thing he knew a wand was being placed in his hand. Taking it he made one more glace around the shop to make sure no trolls would come out at the last second. He made a quick wave with the wand and he felt a warm tingle all over his body.*

Freyr was totally confused because all of his family members got their wand from the Gregorovitch's. He slowly entered the Ollivander's being the first one who has been there in his family. He tried to see inside through the dusty windows facing the street full of Hogwarts students and their families. Freyr was alone but he tried not to think about it since he got here. It seemed like no one was in there When he pushed open the door, he was startled by the doorbell, then he laughed at himself to calm himself down. At that very moment, a snake-like ribbon came out of nowhere and started... Freyr did not know what it was doing actually. Then he realized it was a tape which was measuring several places like his elbows to his ankle and so on. When it finally stopped, all Freyr was thinking when he will get his wand and try it for the first time and maybe use some spells that his sister taught him. After all, Ministry wouldn't send him to Azkaban just for trying some spells, right?

It wasn't every day that a gaggle of children came to be fitted all at once, and it CERTAINLY wasn't every day that an actual, honest to Merlin, live and kicking, DEAD KNEAZLE appeared too. Ramiel took his glasses off, polished them, put them back on, and gaped a bit. For a moment he entirely forgot that he was the wandmaker that the wee bell was summoning. It was a bit like a percussion instrument, really, which was fitting given who was currently beating on the thing.

Maybe he could sell it on wiz-Bay or A-wiz-on? Helpfully, he was startled from his reverie, not from the insistent bell-ringing, but rather from his cat Wafer, mewing because she wasn't getting enough attention even though there were so many pairs of hands that COULD be giving her attention.

"Well, its... err... a party today, I see!" Would it be ENTIRELY unprofessional to ask for an autograph? What if he just casually placed all of their albums on the counter with a pen, would that be too subtle?

Luckily, the measuring tape wasn't nearly so starstruck, so it took measurements from all the children then insistently waved in front of Ram's face. He adjusted his glasses again, took them all in, and then nodded. Okay. Yes. He could do this. This was fine. Four at once.

Just four, wasn't it? There weren't more hiding?

Ram went and started fetching boxes. A lot of them. More than just four since a few of them would need a bit of extra testing and trialing, and he stacked them orderly on the counter, momentarily forgetting that he was in the august presence of a wrock legend, in favour of doing the thing he loved most in the world - finding wands for people.

"Err... okay. Here we go. All at once then?" He handed out boxes to each child, just one each, from their respective piles.

"And... swish!"

Charlie waited for what felt like foreverrrrr (really it was thirty or seconds or so, but his excitement had gotten the best of him). It wasn't long, though, before the shopkeeper returned with what Charlie hoped might be his new wand. His very own wand! His first! And...hopefully his only! The incoming firstie grinned a rather goofy-looking grin at it before snapping out of it and accepting the box.

All at once, the shopkeeper said? That meant it was time to do the whole swish and flick the thing! COOL! Charlie swished right on cue then waited for the magic to happen. Or whatever it was that happened when just the right wand was paired with just the right wizard. He felt this weird surge of...maybe magic?...trickle its way through him. Was it the wand? Nothing was blowing up or anything, at least.

OOC: I'm good with this being 'the one'. DA is closing for students anyway.

"Hello, give this one a go." He had fetched it quickly enough, this first attempt, and he waited for her to give it a wave.
As the measuring tape had finished, Gracelyn had found herself glancing over at Papa James. Was it really that important to know how long her nose was, or all the other funny measurements the tape had taken? She didn’t see how that made a difference in what kind of wand she should have, but then maybe it was something to find out about. If she didn’t go into Astronomy or dance after graduation, maybe. It was a possibility. Maybe. She didn’t think either of her papas would mind.

Besides, she’d gotten a bit distracted by all the other kids waiting to get their own wands, wanting to introduce herself. The excitement had bubbled up to the point of nearly spilling over, when suddenly the shopkeeper had showing up. Already with a wand that he was holding out to her to try. Therefore, instead of the introduction to the other kids that she’d meant to do, she’d turned sparkling eyes up to the man. “Is it easy to figure out what wand people should have?,” she asked, taking the one he’d held out to her.

“How do all the measurements tell you which one I should have?,” she continued, waving the wand slightly. Like she’d seen her papas do with theirs sometimes, or her aunts or anyone else in her family. Except, instead of a cool spell, just some purplish sparks came out of the tip. Was that supposed to happen?

THIS had Wafer interested, her nose twitching excitedly at the delicious smells wafting from the bouquet. She still didn't move but she quivered eagerly and started purring LOUDLY.

"What a lovely match. I believe we've found your wand now. 11 3/4 inches and springy. With a core of demiguise hair." And of course, he told her the wood too, such a special one. So lovely. "11 galleons for that one.... do you want to purchase any accessories for it?"

"That's a match for you though." And he was PLEASED about it. "A rare core in that wand. You have 10 3/4 inch flexible larch with tebo tusk core. It was a good thing they did not mark things up at Ollivanders, really.

Pax GAPED. NO THANKS????!?! The OUTRAGE. They were the ELDEST kids and they didn't even get stuff to go with their wands? Not even cases or new holsters or polish to share? She gave her father accusing, unhappy looks and then melted into the crowd. Perhaps she was sulking. Maybe.

Or maybe she was up to No Good™, Upstead style.

Ramiel cheerfully counted the money into the register. "You're welcome." They got to keep the boxes that the wands came in of course, even if they were just cardboard, it did make it easier to carry them home. One of them had disappeared and had their box already, the second one, Ram packed up and tied it up with a red ribbon to carry it by or simply keep it closed, and offered it to its new owner.

"Well then, I think that's the perfect wand for you." Ramiel said, watching as the boy tried the wand. "You have 13 and 2/3 inches of sturdy English Oak with the dragon heartstring of a Romanian Longhorn.10 galleons for that fine wand." Plus anything else the boy wanted of course.

After all, Ministry wouldn't send him to Azkaban just for trying some spells, right?
"Well hello there!" Ramiel greeted, spotting the newest customer as they entered the shop. He snagged the measuring tape out of mid air and watched it as it indicated the various measurements it had taken of the boy.

"Lets see about finding you a wand. One minute." It was less than a minute, actually- Ramiel Skeres knew the shop like the back of his hand, considering he actually lived in it, and he returned moments later with a cardboard box, long and narrow, and he opened it, holding it down low so the boy could take the wand from within.

"Take a hold of this and give it a bit of a swish."

You got quite good at noticing the moment, the moment when the wand and the wielder matched. Even if it wasn't with a bang or a fanfare, you could see it, that moment when the magic happened. Ramiel nodded in satisfaction. "12 3/4 inch strong ebony with demiguise hair core you have there. 11 galleons for that wand." A smart looking wand it was.

"It isn't easy at all, but you do get better with experience of course." Ramiel said. He wouldn't lie about it or minimize the amount of work it took. "It takes a lifetime of learning to get truly good at it, and not everyone has the knack for it." You either did or you didn't. Ramiel had shown promise at a young age, and his parents had recognized it and, owning a particularly large magical forestry, had had the connections to set him on his life path. "Well we'd be here for years for me to really explain the answer to that one - suffice it to say that there are magical correspondences for every physical and metaphysical dimension of any magical individual and their traits and qualities, and they map over various traits and qualities of the wand materials as individual elements, and as the myriad ways each of those elements combine as a whole. Magical potentiality and actuality, and that sort of thing." And that was the most simplified answer that he could give too. Eleven year olds asking about these things was always somewhat amusing - like they wanted to run before they could even walk. Or, more accurately, like they wanted to travel at lightspeed on a fantastical spaceship from a muggle story before they could walk. "I'm afraid you won't learn about that at Hogwarts. Or err.... Beauxbatons, rather, so you'll just have to trust that I know what I'm doing, young miss." Speaking of which, the wand in question seemed to be the perfect fit.

"Very nice. We've found you your wand." Or, actually, he had. His job and life's work and all that. There had been no question of the wood, that was for certain. "12 3/4 inch bendy Poplar with unicorn hair core. 11 galleons for that one.... are you after any accessories?"

"Pine!" The blonde paused, eyeing the wand thoughtfully. "Pine...pine?" Pine didn't seem that exciting as far as wand woods went and Cecelia couldn't help but wonder why her wand was pine and not, say, sugar maple or something. "Is there...anything special about pine?" It wasn't that she didn't LOVE her wand, because it was all hers and it helped her make that HUGE gust of wind, but she wondered what pine said about her as a person, because that was important, it was. "I do like the unicorn hair core part. I really love unicorns.." She added after a moment, not wanting to seem ungrateful.

It was a good thing they did not mark things up at Ollivanders, really.
Oh, it was a match for her. Phoebe lifted the wand up level with her eyes and studied it until her eyes crossed. Welp, it was pretty and felt good in her hand, so she wasn't disappointed.

"Thank you, sir. My mum will pay for it." When she came along with the bag of galleons.

DID ANYONE HEAR THE KITTY THOUGH?! Bernie really tried her best to listen to the nice man explain all about her wand its core and its ~ m a h o g o n y ~ wood, but the WHOLE TIME what she was really listening to was the kitty going PURRR PURRR PURRR.

The wand man had just finished talking, but Bernie didn't realize that he had asked her a question until she looked up from fiddling with the catnip in her bouquet. (She had to leave it here for the cat!) Oh, oops. Judging from the man's expression, he was patiently waiting for an answer to some question...

"I'LL TAKE IT," she shouted enthusiastically. "Just the wand then!" She could probably stick it down her sock for now and then crochet a holster or a sparkly bag for it later. She'd have to see what all the real wizards and witches wore 'round Hogwarts. Maybe some of the girls used it as a hair accessory, like her grandmum did when she put her hair up with a knitting needle in it?? Did wizards knit, by the way?

Oh yeah, she was supposed to be counting out her coins. Fortunately she had like EXACTLY 15 in her pocket, so she'd have enough for a wand AND an ice cream after. "One.... two..." This would take a while since Bernie was doing it one-handed. She had her bouquet and wand in one hand and was steadily digging through her hip pocket with the other. "Seven.... eight.... NINE.... ten... ELEVEN!"

THERE! Bernadette spread the coins all over the counter and then gave them a shove to the man. While he rang her out, she sidled down the counter to give the kitty some PAT PAT PATS and some FRESH catnip.

From the moment she'd walked into Ollivanders, Faye was very rapidly beginning to feel very overwhelmed by the sights around her, but all of that seemed to rest her dizzy brain when she'd remembered what her father had told her. Just to remain calm and enjoy the moment, the wand will choose her. She just has to trust that it is the right wand. She fussed with the ends of her hair a little bit as she glanced the many shelves of wands above her.

The little redhead watched from afar as other likely students her age were measured by the magical measuring tape and her curiosity would only grew as fast as her previous feelings of brief anxiety. She analyzed very carefully how it would measure each person before they would discover from the wandmaker what kind of wand would fit them best as he presented each one to them. It was so fascinating!

Soon it was not long before she caught sight of the magical measuring tape beginning to float near her...

It was her turn now? Yes?

Then he looked at the way his wand was sitting in his hand, it looked so... natural, usual, appropriate, shortly, just the way it should. Almost frenetic from happiness, Freyr turned to the clerk and waited for directions.

"And... swish!"
Flynn asked good questions! Octavia herself had an answer for everything she wanted on her wand. She wanted hers to be engraved, with ribbons, AND have a pretty wand wood color!

Before she got a chance to say, there was a measuring tape moving about her and her friends. She giggled delighted, watching the tape before it flitted off to the wandkeeper. It didn't take him too long (but it sure FELT long) for him to return with wands for each of them. When both she and Flynn had wands, she leaned over to her bestie. "Lets swish our wands together!" She whispered excitedly with a twinkle in her eyes. "On three."

Tavie straightened back up and cleared her throat for a performance. "One, two, three!" With her best friend she gave her wand a grand flourish. Though Octavia knew she was good at things, even she was surprised when a small stream of bright colors flew out of her wand and danced about in front of her before disappearing.

She looked over at her papa.

THIS was her wand!

No accessories? Shocking. What a surprise that the babies who were literally not even born yet were getting priority when it came to buying new stuff. Because they did have new stuff, Nem had seen it back at the house. So. Another thing to keep in mind.

Naturally, Nem noticed the exact moment that Pax slid away and disappeared amongst all of the other people in the shop, being that they were stood right beside her when she did it. It went without saying that they chose not to bring any attention to her disappearing act. Instead, they stepped forwards to take the box that held their new wand, uttering an automatic, "Thanks," to the shopkeeper as they did.

---

Jake had caught those looks, he had, and they hadn't made him feel good. In fact, he had been quick to avert his eyes because, brave Hit Wizard that he was, he could not immediately face the upset eleven-year-old girl.

Right. "We're all set then," Jake said, pleased to have at least ticked another thing off of what seemed to be the Never-Ending To-Do List of the Summer of '99. Once Nem had the boxed up wand in hand, Jake turned for the door, ready to head on out with the kids.

Except he'd managed to lose one, because of course he had. And a look in Nem's direction was entirely unhelpful, as he received only a shrug in response. Well... with any luck Pax was simply sulking in amongst the crowd. "Time to go, Pax," he said to, uh... well, to the room in general, in the hopes that she'd pop back up again. Losing sight of his kids in Diagon Alley would never fail to make him nervous.

"--with Unicorn tail hair core. 12 galleons for that one." And whatever else for accessories.

This is the best thing he's ever heard. Hands down, bar NONE, the absolute most a m a z i n g thing that's ever happened to him. His own wand!! He got to keep this. It's almost thirteen inches long and it's firm and made from acacia and everything!! The BEST wand. He loved it. He loved his wand more than he loved anything in the world. More than CLEO even, and he really loved his kneazle.

"Thank you sir!" Coby whispered and brightened considerably as he turned to hold out his wand to his mum. "Look!! My wand!!" the eleven year old got so excited that several more of those pretty sparks shot out of the wand and as his mother, who backed away with her brow raised at him. Oops. Coby pointed the wand down at the floor, and stepped away from the counter so Mum could pay and everything.

But. One more question. "Sir, why is Acacia difficult to match? That's what you said right? Does that mean this wand is rare? I don't really mind if it isn't, I just want to know."

Rachel had been very careful to hide the sudden wetness in her eyes. Her third child to get a wand, and it didn't seem to have gotten any easier in the decade between Serena and little Coby here. She pretended to be entirely fascinating with the shelves filled with wands as Coby got his most burning question answered, acting the part of stern mother when he pointed his wand directly at her. She had no idea where that boy got his wild ideas from, but his happiness was quite contagious. She'd have to teach him never to point his wand at others unless for a specific purpose when they got home.

Hmm. Twelve galleons. Not a cheap wand, either. "Add a wrist holster please, dark brown leather," Rachel reached into her bag for her money and remembered Benzi's requests. "And a tub of wand conditioner, and another of waterproofing rub as well please," she added with a glance at the ceiling, tallying up the costs in her head. "Not for Coby," she nodded at her son, who beamed and pointed at himself, "for my eldest. He is in MLE," she said with pride, and began counting out the coins. Good thing she'd found five tins of unopened wand polish yesterday, or she'd bought some of that too.

"Twenty three galleons and twenty knuts, correct?" she put two bound stacks of ten galleons on the table, three additional galleons, and one sickle. She didn't have any knuts on her, those usually went to the children every time they visited Diagon Alley.

A wave of relief surged over Heath at the shopkeeper's words. Whew, that was good to know! He was beginning to worry that his letter from Hogwarts was a mistake, and he wasn't really a wizard at all! He nodded, managing a small smile. His brown eyes widened as he watched the other wand box move back to its place, staring down a long line of shelves containing wand boxes in awe of the sheer number of them. "Did you make all these wands yourself?" he asked, realizing too late that he'd spoken out loud.

Suddenly remembering he still hadn't found his own wand, he took the next one offered. Would this be the one? There was only one way to find out! He gave it a tentative wave, taking care not to aim at anything that looked breakable. The tip glowed, and a stream of blue light shot out of the wand. "Wow!" Heath whispered. It looked like something out of Star Wars! Could he be a wizard and a Jedi? That would be so awesome!

"Mum! Fiy! Did you see that?" he exclaimed, turning to his family. "It looks like a-" He struck a dramatic pose, holding the wand (still emitting blue light) aloft. A beam of red light appeared, crossing with the the blue one. Where did that come from? Heath blinked, looking around, and saw the red light had come from Fiy's wand. Ooh, it was on! "You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine," he recited, turning on his older brother, but before he could get too into re-enacting a scene from his favorite movie, his mum reminded him they were still in the shop. Oops!

Heath's cheeks flushed the same shade of red as the light emitting from his brother's wand. "Sorry," he said sheepishly, turning to the shopkeeper. "Can I have this wand, please? I really like it."

Before Grayson knew it, he was being reassured about people being protected and powerful wands and even flipping babies? Yeah, he was ignoring that last part to the best of his abilities. Didn't need to know, didn't want to know. As far as he was concerned, he was blissfully oblivious to all of that.

Although, how Phoebe and Tavie knew that he was worried about Flynn going to Hogwarts, he'll never know. Whatever it was, it caused the man to smile cheekily and say, "Knew I could rely on the three of you." Flynn had good friends, and the fact that they were all going to Hogwarts together only made this slightly easier.

Trust Flynn to want colours and gemstones on his wand. Was he surprised? Nah. He'd probably be more surprised if he wanted his wand to be plain and simple. "Yeah, it's your wand, you can style it however you want. Maybe get a holster for it, if you wanted to be fancy." Ruby might have his skin if he spoilt the kid too much but how could he say no?

"You knooooow," he started in a dramatic fashion, "I think you'll get an even better wand. One that's got a nice colour that you can adjust with all the gemstones and ribbons you want." He knew squat about wands but the kid didn't need to know that.

And then, before he knew it, it was time. The time he dreaded but was also glad to be there for. They seemed to want to do this together, especially Tavie and Flynn, so he wasn't going to interrupt. Just stand there, looking cool and trying not to look as emotional as he felt. He wasn't gonna start blubbering. Not in here, not in front of his son, and not in front of his son's friends.

It was a relief when Scan started talking to him. But that question? Snort. "You're not asking for yourself, are you?" he asked, giving him a cheeky grin, "Dora's a scary lady and I'm not breaking up a marriage." No, thanks. Not his cup of pumpkin juice.

"I've been seeing this guy, though. A paternal type, seems to be good with kids." Which was important, you know. "But Merlin, he's so boring, he might as well be a f-" Kids. ".....freaking cucumber." And that was his sad story.

"What about you? How do you feel about all of this?" Wands, school, Beauxbatons.

Ramiel appeared soon after, and the tape did rapidly point and measure at itself, clearly communicating with some kind of sign language of number and wand-based lore, and Ramiel thanked it before it skulked off to measure the next child.

"Are you ready for your wand?" He asked the little girl. "Lets see if we can find it quickly." And he fetched the options from the stacks, returning a short while later and placing several boxes on the counter, before picking one and offering it to her, taking the lid of the box off so she could take the wand out from within. "Wave it when you're ready."
Shivali giggled as the tape measure made obscure measurements and then tapped her head, and it was only after a few moments that she recognised the movements. She couldn't believe it! How often was it that she found someone not part of her family signing at her? Her own hands moved, swift and nimble with years of practice, to form the phrase "feels like dreaming".

It felt like a dream, for sure, especially with the weird way that time seemed to pass. Waiting to be measured took an AGE, and then it felt like she'd only blinked before Mister Wandmaker Shopman showed up. Her eyes followed the skulking tape measure sadly, a little jealously, but quickly returned to the person speaking to her.

She nodded, quick bobs of her head, and her hands signing "excited" with motions large and sloppy, all but quivering with the feeling. Her eyes shifted from the wand to the man offering it, her eyes widening in disbelief, and then narrowing in concern, before wrinkling with glee. Many expressions over the space of what was probably all of three seconds.

Her hand reached into the box, gingerly pulling out the wand and WOW was it more than anything she'd ever expected. The feeling spread from the fingers precariously wrapped around the handle, and as she shifted her grip, travelled up her shoulder and into her chest before what felt like a BURST of warmth straight from her heart to the tips of her toes, to the ends of her hair. Eyes wide, she looked at the Shopkeeper Man for some kind of sign, but her hand seemed to know what to do.

Of course it knew what to do, considering she'd been practicing with twigs, watching her mothers and brothers and sister with their wands, green with envy, impatient for her turn. Now it was here. She was here. Ollivander's. Waving the wand in her hand, watching with absent shock as glittery sparkles rained down on her.

Was this wand always going to be glittery? It was pretty cool, but sounded like that could be inconvenient.

"Feels warm," she mouthed, signing the words as she did, just in case that was necessary for the whole procedure thing going on here. Was there more? Did she have to battle a troll now?

Excited was definitely an understatement. This was the moment Malia Fenwick had been waiting for her ENTIRE LIFE.

She was practically vibrating with the effort it took to keep still. Even her father's patient hands on her shoulders and the look her mother kept giving her was doing nothing to subdue her energy. SHE. WAS. GETTING. HER. WAND. TODAY. Coby was just ahead of her in the queue and watching him get measured for his wand was only making her MORE excited. Look at that clever measuring tape. Okay, so the measuring tape wasn't clever, it was just charmed, but STILL. WOW. She was going to learn charms as cool as that one day! One day soon, she hoped.

...FINALLY, it was her turn to get measured. Her father released his grip on her shoulders and she BEAMED up at him. In fact, she grinned the entire time she was being measured. While the measuring tape measured her arms, her right hand, the length of her face, it seemed, and just about everything else. It was certainly thorough and she was NOT complaining. Her wand was going to be perfect on the first try, she just knew it!

Rajender Beryl-Nishigawa was getting his wand today and he didn't know how to feel about it. It didn't quite feel real. He was excited, of course, but slightly nervous too, although he wasn't sure why. He wondered whether he and his sister's wands would be similar in any way. Secretly, he hoped they would be.

He had, unsurprisingly, let Vali go before him in the queue and he watched carefully as she got measured. She really seemed to be enjoying herself. He grinned widely at her when the measuring tape signed what appeared to be 'believe' in the air. He... had not seen that coming.

Soon enough, it was his turn to get measured and Shivali was trying out a wand. It measured his the circumference of his head and the length of his legs, moving from swiftly from one part of his body to the next. He attempted to watch what was happening with Vali, but he kept getting distracted by the measuring tape. Eventually, he quietly asked it, "You can sign?" as it measured his arm. He didn't want to draw too much attention to the fact he was talking to an albeit magical measuring tape.

It wasn't that she didn't LOVE her wand, because it was all hers and it helped her make that HUGE gust of wind, but she wondered what pine said about her as a person, because that was important, it was. "I do like the unicorn hair core part. I really love unicorns.." She added after a moment, not wanting to seem ungrateful.
"Well, of course there is. Even aside from how lovely it smells," And it did smell nice, "Pine makes for an adaptable wand, willing to be used for all sorts of new and creative magical pursuits: inventing new spells, potions or magical techniques for instance. It is said that Pine wands are able to detect, and perform best for, owners who are destined for, ah, long lives. Pine wands are particularly suited to non-verbal magic, as well as potions work, hexes and jinxes, curses of all types, and conjuration and transfiguration magic. A very reliable wand. And the straight-grained wood is quite handsome too, I think. And Unicorn hair wands are of course very faithful to their owner. They are one of the least likely to fluctuate or experience blockages in the magic they produce. Good for charms and transfiguration, and excellent for healing spells." Ramiel offered helpfully. Maybe he should have said it was called sparklepine or something of that sort.

But.... yes. 9 galleons, plus whatever else she wanted... a holster.... polish maybe....? He glanced up at the menu board and then back at the child.

And.... well. Well. She couldn't take the wand until it was paid for. So Ramiel waited until this mum person arrived. "Were you wanting any accessories with that? A holster? Polish?"

Ramiel counted out the coins too, and satisfied, counted them into the register. He would have said a polite goodbye but the little girl was now ensconced in the corner with his cat. Oh well. He understood perfectly. He'd pick the cat too.

Yes?
"Hello there! Lets try you with a wand shall we?" Ramiel greeted the next customer, grabbing the measuring tape and checking the measurements it had just taken as he spoke. It took only a few moments to check them all, and then he was off to the stacks, looking for a wand. He was certain of the wood at least, but the core.... hmm. A few possibilities to try.

He returned shortly, with one box. Just the one. He was 90 percent sure of it, and if it wasn't right, well then there was surely only the one other possibility. This one though... he offered it to the girl.

"Give this a wave for me."

"A handsome wand, that one. 13 3/4 inch robust hornbeam with jobberknoll feather. Excellent wood for defensive spells. Not commonly combined with Jobberknoll feather, non-verbal magic comes quite a bit easier to wands made with Jobberknoll, and charmswork in general seems to flow well too. Its 10 galleons. Do you want a holster or anything of the sort?" Ramiel pointed up at the menu board, with all the accessories and such listed.

"You're welcome," Ramiel answered the kid, generally just pleased to have another sale finished and a pair of good wands matched well.

Pax reappeared without any sort of comment but there was less tension in her shoulders and she glanced at her twin and nodded exactly once, giving utterly nothing away to anyone else. The long thin cardboard box that her wand came in, with the ribbon around it, looked exactly as it should.

Nothing to see here.

"Quite rare, yes. Acacia tends to refuse to produce magic for anyone other than their owner - they are also very rarely matched to learners, as they take some extra work to master spells, but once you do, you will be able to coax from it very complex magic." Ram explained briefly to the son before looking at the mother.

He selected one of the wrist holsters -a nice deep brown leather- ringing up the 4 galleons for that, then adding the wand conditioning oil - 4 galleons, and the waterproofing rub - 2 galleons, 20 knuts, to the pile. With the wand.....errr... no. Not quite. "22 and 20, ma'am," Ramiel said honestly, sliding back one galleon, and then counting out 9 knuts in change for her. He packed in a few cloths that were ideal for buffing in the rub and the oil, and then slid the package across the counter.

And... MLE. That reminded him. He had to take a trip to the ministry as soon as summer had passed.

"Oh, not at all. I've only been here a few years now - there are wands here that were made hundreds of years ago by the Ollivanders, but I believe most of our wands in stock were made by Bryce McLaughlin and Ira Banner." And Florian Dudemeister-Quackenboss, but Ramiel always got a bit tongue twisted over that man's name.

He watched the boy wave the wand and sure enough, that was a match. He was about to say as much when.... well he got a little show, didn't he? He blinked and adjusted his glasses awkwardly then just nodded at the apology. "Well, yes I would say that's your wand alright. You've got 13 2/3 inch robust walnut with unicorn hair core." A lovely looking wand. "10 galleons for that one. Are you wanting a holster? Polish?"

She whispered excitedly with a twinkle in her eyes.

His dad said he could have gemstones and ribbons!!!! Flynn GRINNED up at him - and a HOLSTER!? Oh boyohheckohCirceohSweetCliodna!

Flynn gripped the wand he was offered, looked around at his friends in nervous excitement, and then up at his dad (and also at Scan) with the hero worship kind of adoration. He was getting his wand RIGHT NOW! RIGHT NOW! And of course he was going to swish it good, and swish it at the same time as Tavie, on a one two and three - and he didn't even THINK for a second that this one wouldn't be it. Maybe that was part of why the wand, upon said swishing, emitted a silvery vapour which swirled up and around and through Tavie's stream of colours, almost as though they had practiced it, or as though both colour stream and silver vapour had been cast from the same wand, with intention, and not just from a wide eyed wave of first ever wands from two eleven year olds.

Oh it felt so NICE! He looked up at his dad. "This is it!"

"Tavie look!" he held his wand out for her to take a good look at and eagerly eyeballed hers.

Oh but he was allowed a holster and stuff! Flynn looked up at the board, eyes searching it for just the perfect -- ohhhhh they had SATIN! He kinda wanted that one. But..... he took a breath. Best not. Just in case. "Can I get a leather hip holster? Ummm...." Did they come in rainbow?

.... best not.

"In black please!"

And THEN he noticed the HANDLE EMBELLISHMENT bit, and Flynn was starry-eyed. "I can get a gemstone in the handle???"

How nice to see two wands interact like that. It would happen more often if people were fitted together more often, but generally it was a more one on one experience so it didn't quite happen this way. Still, two very good matches that Ram was pleased about. He smiled at the little girl.

"You have 12 1/3 unyielding Acacia with Jobberknoll feather core for 12 galleons." Surprising, that he'd made two Acacia wand matches this summer, given how difficult it often was to match. "Are you wanting any equipment or accessories with that?" And.... he STILL very much wanted to ask her father for his autograph.

And for the boy.... "14 3/4 inch supple willow with griffin claw core there. Lovely. 11 galleons for the wand and 4 for the holster... that's 15 so far......" The gemstone part though.... "Its a minimum of 20 galleons for the embellishment, how about I give you a brochure to take a look at, and you can take that home and have a think about what you want?" Ramiel suggested, glancing at the boy's father. He got one of the information brochures out and circled the ones that were an option with that particular wand - there were a few gemstones that would not resonate well with the griffin claw.

He passed the brochure over with the holster.

"Warm is good." Ramiel reassured the girl, reading her lips. He wasn't really up with human signing, though now that he was noticing it, there... were some similarities, weren't there? "11 3/4 supple birch with phoenix feather core there, 11 galleons for that one."

Meanwhile the measuring tape sort of SHRUGGED an answer at the boy. It could SORT of sign. If it FELT like it. Since the two of them seemed to be together, the measuring tape interrupted Ramiel and the little girl with the new set of measurements.

"Hang tight." Ram told her. "Take a look at the menu board to see if there are any accesories you want, and I'll find a wand for... ah, your brother?" He studied the measurements closely, seemed like it. There were enough similarities to suggest so, even aside from the pair of them having a resemblance.

So he went to fetch a wand for the brother, heading to the ladder then.... changing his mind suddenly and veering in a different direction, to one of the lower shelves on the other side of the shop. He came back shortly with a wand for the boy to try, and offered it to him. "Lets see if this one is a match for you."

"Hello." Ramiel greeted, approaching the (clearly excited) next customer. Some kids kind of vibrated with it, he had noticed. That was fine, it WAS an exciting time, and he felt lucky to be part of it. "Lets see..." He beckoned the tape closer and then watched it patiently as it sulkily decided that OKAY it would show off the measurements it had just taken. Ram remained patient with it and then let it go again as soon as he had what he needed. He headed up a ladder, a tall ladder, and rummaged around in one of the shelves for a moment before stepping back down and bringing the cardboard box over. Long and thin, and now open so that the girl could pluck the wand from within it.

"Give this a swish."

Oh look it was in fact her turn!

She stood very still and diligent as the measuring tape very precisely took her measurements. Her blue eyes were soon following the sound of the wandmaker who was speaking to her in a very kind tone. Faye's eyes lit up with excitement as he approached her and checked the measurements the tape had just taken of her. Before she could verbalize her excitement (in a calm manner) or ask him a question about wands in general, he was off checking his stacks to find her a wand.

Oh-well not to worry..he'd return, yes?

Hm....

.....How far back did this shop go?

The redhead patiently began to sway back and forth for a few moments before she looked up again to see the wandmaker had returned with a chosen wand. Her eyes glued to the box in his hands as removed the wan to offer it to her.

Faye moved quickly extending her hand but all too quickly stopped herself for fearing that she might have appeared greedy. "Wait, sorry...too eager....Forgive me sir.." She took a breath to compose herself, then nodded firmly as she graciously took the wand from him in her dominant hand on her left side. Making sure to have a nice grip on the handle, she lifted her arm to give it a gentle wave.

Her eyes widened as SPARKS came shooting out of the end of her wand like fireworks of many different shapes and colors! Was definitely not expecting that! It was as if she was having her own festival! It would probably be best not to start running around in a circle at the moment, right? Oh the temptation to show her excitement was rapidly growing. But lucky enough, she was able to keep herself at her composed demeanour.

Her attention back on the wandmaker as she spoke lightly, "Well...I don't appear to have set fire to your store...so that must be a good thing?" She smiled politely.

"Give this a swish."
Malia's eyes followed the man as he retrieved a wand (HER WAND!) from a high up shelf. The BEST wands must be kept up there, she thought.

.....

Give this a swish. Words she had been waiting her WHOLE life to hear. "Okay!" She grinned and gingerly took the wand from the box. It was precious and she would have to be careful not to be too reckless when handling it. HEART EYES. It was so... elegant looking. After a moment of staring and collecting herself, she noticed what felt like... a tingle in her fingers, which made her grin more. That HAD to be a good thing, right? Wasting no more time, she waved the wand with a little flourish. Her eyes widened as a glow emitted from the wand and the air around her got warm. It felt welcoming. "Is it this one?!" She eagerly asked the wand man. Just to be sure, she waved in again and a few green sparked flew into the air. "COOL! I like this one! Do you think it likes me?" She had been told by her father that wands CHOSE the witch. She didn't know why any wand wouldn't choose her but it didn't matter because this wand really seemed to like her. It was doing the COOLEST things!

Raj grinned proudly as the man told his sister her wand's description and then sort of grinned at the measuring tape, too. Oh. Were they done now? It must be time for him to find his wand - or should he say for it to find him. He watched the man and tilted his head when he suddenly changed his direction. He must have had some kind of inspiration.

When he came back, Raj smiled and took the wand out of its box. Oh. "Warm," he echoed. He now knew what Vali had meant. He glanced at his sister and flashed her a grin before giving the wand a little wave. A golden glow and a couple of sparks came from the tip of the wand. He looked up at the man expectantly.

So it wasn’t easy. Gracelyn had actually expected that response, honestly. But that didn’t change that he seemed like he’d found her wand awfully quickly, so that only made her that much more curious. Plus, it was kind of fascinating that the man actually seemed like he was willing to answer her questions, if he hadn’t had everyone else in the queue to find wands for and everything.

“Is there somewhere where I can learn all that stuff? About wands and measurements and how to figure out which one matches with somebody?,” she asked instead. Maybe he’d offer an owl course or something because she really did like him. And she really did want to learn how the length of her nose made a difference in her wand. And what happened if someone’s nose suddenly got shorter or something, if that meant their wand didn’t fit them anymore. Lots of questions, and also, why Hogwarts or any of the other schools didn’t teach about it. It was fascinating. Almost as much as astrology and astronomy and stuff.

Apparently purple sparks were good? “Okay,” she replied, still holding the wand securely in her hand as she glanced over at Papa James to see if he had the money ready. Once he’d quietly passed the coins to her, she handed them over to the man. “Can I buy stuff later if I think I need it? By owl or something?” And can she owl him her questions when she comes up with them.
