Default Wand Fitting

Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

In front of the counter there is the empty space that is designated as the fitting area. Here is where wands are fitted. After being measured by the magical measuring tape, you will be assisted by a worker who will then endeavor to fit you with your perfect wand and start pulling boxes from the shelves, which stretch back impossibly far and up so high that even the tallest people have to tip their head back to see the tops.

Long sliding ladders are attached to every stretch of shelves, and the wandmakers make great use of these to reach those wands which are tucked away high up. There seems to be a filing system of sorts, some kind of method to the madness, though most of the boxes are unmarked. Is it a colour code? Or is it shape? size? smell? Something else? Well you'll never know unless you get a job here. Luckily, and out of sheer necessity, these shelves have been bespelled so that wandboxes are not in danger of flying everywhere due to errant spells cast by children wielding their new wands.

Text Cut: Wand Fitting Instructions - PLEASE READ FIRST!
Instructions

⌦ In order to receive a wand, please take the WAND QUIZ ONCE for the character who is here for a wand. Then, post your character being measured by the "magical measuring tape" ONCE in this thread. This thread is not one where you should interact with others, one post here please! It serves as our queue!

See the example post below, or look at other posts in this thread from previous terms.

Text Cut: Example Post
Jessica went into Ollivanders with more than her share of nerves, it was time for her first wand! The eleven year old made her way over to the measuring area and waited for her turn. Soon enough the measuring tape reached her and began zipping about, straightening with a snap and measuring out her height and, when she held her arms out, she watched it take a measurement of how long they were too. Fun! Did that mean her wand would be as big as her whole arm?

The girl stepped away from the measuring area and she eagerly waited for the shopkeeper to find her wand.

⌦ Please take the SORTING QUIZ first and wait to be placed in your house before taking the wand quiz! Your house effects your final wand in our quiz! This goes for current members who are re-sorting too, though you may take the quiz in advance if you know what your new house will be.

⌦ You may role play the magical measuring tape, but you may not role play for the shopkeepers. Ollivander does not work here!

⌦ After submitting the wand quiz and posting in this thread, please wait for a shop worker to assist you and your character in finding their perfect wand match. You must RP to get your wand.

⌦ Please do not stretch the wand fitting experience out too long, it should not take more than three tries at an absolute maximum to find your character's match.

If we run out of time to complete the RP with you by the end of the RP summer, we will PM or VM your wand result to you, provided you have posted in this thread and responded to our efforts to interact with you.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM Tegz and she'll try to answer your questions as quickly and efficiently as she can.

⌦ Have fun!

Most of her family were elsewhere on this very significant day of her existence for REASONS... but that was fine. Dad was with her and she was going to be receiving her wand at last! The stationary, books and important utensils for school could wait their turn, 'cause she was buzzing and ready! Precisely shown by her white-knuckled fists rigid by her side and holding her breath, eyeing the measuring tape while it zoomed around her. She could feel goosebumps form as she didn't necessarily want the thing to touch her, and she may have peaked over at her dad during the process since the little device was weird, but also could she have one since it was useful...

...but it was FINE 'cause it was DONE and she was READY!

Aww the tape thing was done. Odie was having fun watching it do its things measuring her and all while she could not see anyone controlling it. Oh was he the person who was going to help her with her wand. He seemed nice. He was likely just as excited and as filled with nervous (but competent) energy as they were. Was there anything as exciting as getting your first wand ever? Finally feeling that connection between your magic and-how a conduit like a wand could connect you to the world around you? Ramiel Skeres didn't think so. Today it looked as though he would be run ragged. There were already crowds of children appearing and the magical measuring tape was taking the necessary measurements. It flitted and floated somewhat sulkily over to him and showed the measurements before taking off toward the next child.

Ram though, his attention was on the young girl who was patiently waiting. Unattended too. No overexcited parents or siblings nearby that he could see. But that was fine, they didn't need to be present in order for her experience to be a good one.

"Hello there! I'll be right back with a few wands for you to try. Lets see...." Ram went over to the shelves, considering the measurements and climbed right up one of the ladders. Up to the top. And... ah yes. He took a rather beat up box down (and made a note to himself to replace the storage box later if this wand was not a match) and stowed it under his arm while he climbed down the ladder again. He moved it along several bays and then went up again, not as high this time, and picked out another specific box. This one newer, crisper. With the two boxes in tow, he moved to the counter area and beckoned the girl closer, opening the beaten up box and holding it for her to take the wand from.

"Alright, give this a wave, lets see if it feels right."
Confidently, Analiese took the wand and gave it a wave. Oops. Maybe she did it a bit too confidently, because a nearby vase standing on the counter cracked. "Sorry." , Analiese muttered, putting the wand on the counter. She looked down at her black shoes and thought, "This didn't happen with Isagani."

Her curiosity was begging her to move and wander a bit so she could better inspect all the displays and items offered for sale --inspecting was often a hands on affair-- and she was using every bit of her willpower not to move from where she stood. She was going to be on good, and she was going to receive a good wand for her troubles.

And that's exactly how it went, because the moment she saw the wand he was carrying, she could tell it was a grand one. Her mouth fell open as soon as she saw it. It was sleek, and carved beautifully with sweeping design about it, not boring and straight like a pencil the way her brother's was. This wand was elegant, and special, she could tell. She had absolutely no understanding of wands or wandlore at all, but that didn't stop her from being certain of it.

It even caught the light filtering through the front windows the way her Mam's car did after a wash.

Aoife forced her mouth closed, hesitating a moment before reaching up to take it. But just before her hand made contact with the finely polished wood, she pulled it back suddenly, and wiped her hands clean on the sides of her jeans. With a quick look over to check if her hands were, in fact, cleaner than they had been, Aoife finally took the offered wand.

There was a barely-there pins and needles sensation as her hand closed around it, as if, she imagined it so, something was passing between the wand and her. This had to be her wand. She'd be devastated if it wasn't. "A swish, t'en?"

She gave it more of a flick than a swish, but it still worked, or so she hoped. The air in front of the wand shimmered like heat rising off pavement and tiny flecks of gold-green light darted and vanished like gnats buzzing about. The whole of it only lasted a few small seconds, but it was something.

Aoife glanced up at the wandmaker, half cuddling the wand protectively. "Was t'at good, t'en? Is t'is my wand?" Please say yes.
You know, Ram could get used to this. The moment was something special and unmistakable. It was clear that the wand had found its perfect match in this young girl.

"I think you know the answer to that already." Ramiel said kindly. An extension of herself already, it seemed. It was lovely to see.

"You have 11 3/4 inch brittle redwood with griffin claw core - its a rare wood, that one, known for it's protection abilities and for it's assistance in helping one obtain focus and discipline, and it is an ideal helpmate for both healing magic and finicky repair spells. You must be a lucky young lady, redwood wands are most attracted to those with good fortune, so they say. You'll likely find fire spells come quite naturally to you with that wand. And its core is griffin claw, which lends itself even more to delicate and finicky spells." Ramiel told her. "Now, I mentioned its flexibility is classed as 'brittle' - this isn't something you should be overly concerned with, but I do recommend that you purchase Wand Strengthening Oil which helps to make sure a wand will not snap or crack under pressure. Over time it also increases the quality of a wand, though never more than a degree or so in the flexibility classification scale. You can see its shine now? That's because last night I applied a conditioning oil and polish, so you'll not need to concern yourself with those for a while - the strengthening oil is more pressing if you wish to make the most of your wand as a life long helpmate." He explained and then gestured at the inventory board. "Take a look and see if there's anything else you'd like to add on to your purchase."

She suppressed a cough as the dust settled. "That's alright, Sir! I'll give this one a go." Picking up the wand gingerly, she tried to remember what her older siblings had told her about their wand matching. Archer had mentioned something about a warm, fuzzy feeling, but she couldn't remember much else.

Taking a deep breath, Avalon swished the wand gracefully through the air. She closed her eyes, searching deep down for the feeling that Archer had talked about. But all she felt was her stomach grumbling. With all the excitement of the afternoon, she had forgotten to eat lunch. Puzzled as to why nothing happened, Avalon tried flicking the wand again. A cold blast of air seemed to shoot out of the wand, knocking the other two wand boxes to the ground with a loud clatter. She recoiled immediately, letting go of the wand. As heat flooded her cheeks, she crouched down to pick up the boxes from the floor. What in the world did she do wrong?

"I am so sorry! I don't know what happened," she exclaimed, shaking her head. How embarrassing. She was afraid to look behind her to see if any of the other kids had seen. Avalon remembered her cousin saying that it had taken seven tries before he found the right wand. She tried not to panic - hopefully that wouldn't be the case for her.
Welp. No matter. "Don't worry. It obviously doesn't feel right to you." He took the discarded wand and returned it to its box. "Lets try another." He said, encouragingly. "I'd rather send you on your way with the right wand."

And he would!

Nevertheless, she relaxed her features as the adult in Ollivander's came to speak to her, and stepped up to the counter. The grown ups still controlled every single thing about her life, she had no choice in anything. Cherie said nothing. She watched the man disappear and, with reluctance, allowed herself to marvel at the sheer magnitude of this wand collection. So many wands that no one wanted. So much magic in one place.

"Why do the measurements matter?" Cherie blurted out as the man returned, the Northern French accent coming through clearly. And the box was crumpled. Did that mean this wand was second rate? Second hand? Did someone else buy it and return it, and ruined the box?

Then the man opened the box, and Cherie's eyes suddenly couldn't see everything else. A wand.. for her. A real wand. A functioning, wooden, magical wand for her and for her only. She reached out spindly fingers to gingerly pick it up, and felt warm.

She almost swished as per instructed, but stopped. "What is supposed to 'appen?" she wanted this wand, she didn't want another one. She liked it. Cherie wouldn't accept another wand.
"The measurements relate to various wood, core, and length balances. It helps to rule out wands that won't be a good fit. The rest is intuition." Ram answered her question helpfully. That intuition came from years of working with wands. You just started to feeeeeel it.

He watched her take the wand and then pause. "Just give it a try, and tell me how it feels." Encouragement, plenty of it. "Trust yourself."

SPOILER!!: Becky and her dad

"Me! Me me me!" she chirped with her hand raised and waving about a bit too wildly before memory struck and she remembered the firm scolding she had received at Himitsumahou for being a but unruly. So, upon muttering a soft 'sumimasen' under her breath, she fixated her hazel-green eyes on the Magical Measuring Tape. "You're a clever object," she cooed, wiggling her finger at it before it rushed off and out of reach.

Bouncing on the balls of her feet while braiding a bit of her long black hair, Becky hummed softly to herself as she waited. Something ancient that grandpa would sing her to sleep with on his guitar when she was younger...and whenever he came by for a visit with his guitar even though Eiji always fussed about not needing to be sung to to go to sleep anymore. Becky, on the other hand, always appreciated the gesture.

"FOUR whole options!?" she squeaked in delight as she stepped closer to the wandmaker and ran her palms over the tops of the boxes as though expecting one of them to give her a sort of electric shock. "Oh. I'm Becky. Rebecca Keiko, actually, but I go by Becky."

Eyes trained back to the boxes, she tapped the leftmost box with her finger. "This one, please."

Once again Lewis had had quite the "where did the time go??"-moment when they'd stepped into Ollivander's to get a wand for Becky. Becky. His little girl. She was old enough to get her WAND. And go off to Hogwarts. At least the triplets weren't about to leave just yet. Not yet. But now that he thought about it, those next couple of years were probably going to go by just as fast.

What was he going to do with his time without any children to look after?

For now though, it was only Becky who would be leaving for school soon. Which was plenty to think about. Before he got a chance to do anything more than smile at his daughter, the wand shop owner had approached them. And was asking them questions. Questions he knew the answer to, right? Or was Lewis supposed to reply? The measuring tape seemed to know just who was getting their wand anyway. Thank you, measuring tape. Lewis had found that a lot of adults did that thing with kids where they pretended not to know the answer to very obvious things. It was confusing sometimes.

But Becky seemed to love the game so Lewis gave the other man a smile. "Thank you." He let go of Becky's hand to give her a little more room to try out the wands, while he went over to pour himself a cup of tea. He really could use it. Watching his daughter hold her first wand was making him a bit anxious. Proud too, of course, but anxious all the same. Not that he let any of that show, though. Outside he just waited and tried to share the excitement his daughter felt.

"Well its ah, a pleasure, Miss Becky. I'm Ramiel Skeres, and we're going to get you matched to your perfect wand." That was the plan, and he was confident in it. Especially with this kind of enthusiasm. And her father was getting himself settled with a free cuppa, so Ram kept his attention focused on the small girl as she picked which box. He opened it and presented it to her, low enough that she could grab the wand out of it easily.

"I bet you already know what to do."

More measurements to check and Ram was soon at the young girl's side with a pair of wand boxes, one on top of the other, each fetched from opposite ends of the shop. He studied her for a moment then took the box from the bottom of his stack and opened it up. The wand inside quite ready for her to take.

"Give it a wave and lets see how it feels."

Well. Not that one then. Based on that response he picked one of the others and passed it to her, taking the first one back and restoring it to its box.

"Of course you can. You'll know when its right."

Hmmmmmmmmm. Ram glanced over to survey the damage then shrugged it off. "Don't worry about it, these things happen!" Something a little more.... and perhaps a little less.... ah yes. Perfect. Ram offered her the next one to try. "We'll get there."

She hadn’t meant to be late to the wand fittings. Really, Gráinne had fully intended on arriving in style with her sister. Now where was that little pixie girl? AH! There she was, ”Cúpla…I found you,” she beamed as she walked bounded through the crowd of similarly sized children to her sister’s side. ”I like t’at one” she nodded at Aoife’s redwood wand. The nearly identical girl watched as the shopkeeper explained the wand care instructions to Aoife.

Oh…wow, it was RARE? Her sister had a rare wand? That was…amazing. ”c-can I try one of t’em?" She wanted her own wand now more than anything – even if a part of her hoped beyond everything possible that hers at least fit her.

Looking around the shop, Grainne nodded firmly once. ”would ya fit me too?...or tell me who can?” she wasn’t taking no for an answer, no matter what she was leaving here today with a wand of her own.

Hmmm. A bit rude, Ram rather thought, the interruption. Twins? Maybe. It didn't mean she could skip the queue so to speak.

"I will, I'm the only one that works here, little miss, so ah, it will be me.... but you'll have to wait your turn." He indicated the growing queue of children, each being measured by the tape, that she had bypassed. "As soon as the tape has measured you I'll help you find your wand." He sure would, and already he could tell it would be somewhat different from the other girl's.

A small, excited and wistful smile crept across Aoife's face when it was confirmed this indeed was her wand and that smile simply grew and grew by margins with every new detail of it given. She had matched with a rare...A rare wand picked her! Out of everyone in the world! She certainly felt lucky today.

Aoife continued to listen quietly, her excitement finally reaching a point where it was practically radiating from her; she was shaking, ever so noticeably, eyes locked reverently on her wand. Hers. Only when he gestured at the inventory board did she finally look back up and nod. She was going to take his advice, for sure. Aoife didn't want anything to happen to her wand. They would be together her whole life.

"Can you add..." Oh there were books on wandlore, too. But...she knew she wouldn't be able to justify buying a book on wands to her ma, not with all the other expenses today. "...t'e str..."

She was interrupted by the sound of her twin's voice, which sounded identical to hers to any ear that hadn't made an effort to pick out the subtle difference. Aoife beamed excited, and rather proudly too, at Gráinne. Then she noticed the Wandmaker's slight annoyance and glanced back at the waiting queue of kids. "Grá! Don' be rude!" She gave her sister a pointed look, as if to say 'Don' upset t'e Wandmaker! T'at's how you get a mediocre wand!'

She turned back to the Wandmaker. "Sorry for my sister, sir." Glancing back at the board, she gave it a quick nod. "I'd like to add t'e strengt'ening oil, and t'e polish and conditioning oil, too, please." She knew he said her wand wouldn't need to be polished and conditioned for a while, but she wanted to be ready for when it did, so as to keep her wand looking as pretty as it did right now. The extra expenses could be easily justified to her mam, in that it would benefit not just her wand but her sisters' wands too. "T'ank you."

Aoife reached for the small coin purse her ma gave her, and started to count out coins while she waited for the total.

Analiese took the next wand and gave it a wave. A burst of confetti came from the end of it. Hmm. This seemed like the wand for her. "Is this the one?", Analiese asked the wandmaker. She waved the wand again and another burst of confetti appeared.

And he would!
Well, at least Avalon had only knocked over two wand boxes -- her sister had caused the entire shelf to collapse when she was fitted for her wand. Supposing she should be grateful for not sending the entire shop into disarray, she took a deep breath and closed her fingers around the next wand. Avalon squeezed her eyes shut in anticipation as she gave the wand a graceful swish. And what she felt next was indescribable.

Although she was standing in the dim wand shop, she felt as if she was engulfed in a gentle sunbeam. It was like a warm hug, the taste of her favorite tea, and the delight of running through the grass barefoot...all at once. Her heart fluttered as she opened her eyes and saw a few soft tendrils of golden shimmer raining down from the wand. That had to be a good sign, right? Avalon couldn't help but smile as she looked up at the wandmaker. "Does that mean this is the one?" she asked incredulously.

Especially with this kind of enthusiasm. And her father was getting himself settled with a free cuppa, so Ram kept his attention focused on the small girl as she picked which box. He opened it and presented it to her, low enough that she could grab the wand out of it easily.

"I bet you already know what to do."

Miss Becky.

That elicited a delighted giggle from the 11-year-old as she glanced over at daddy to make sure he had heard it too. "I know you are!" she chirped with an innocent confidence. It was the wandmaker's job, after all. Matching everyone with their perfect wands. Just like mum had the job of helping dragons make babies and hatch eggs and daddy mixed all sorts of complicated things together just like in cooking only it wasn't cooking but you could still ingest a lot of the liquids he made!

She couldn't help the gasp when the lid was removed and she saw the wand. Was it HER wand? She wasn't sure, but it looked so lovely there resting in the box and just waiting for her hand. Fingers gingerly curling around it as though it were a priceless gem, she held it flat upon both her palms for a bit and just looked at it. "......sugoi!"

When Mr. Ramiel spoke again, her head snapped up to meet his friendly eyes attentively and quickly offered a series of eager nods. "I do!" Clutching it in her left hand, Rebecca Keiko Rasting pressed her toes into the soles of her shoes and wiggles her feet until they rested shoulders' width apart.

"TERGEO!" she commanded, waving the wand in the air as she had seen mum and dad perform before. A fluid swish and flick, yes. It was perfect...but at the same time wrong.

So so so so terribly wrong.

Sorry, Mr. Ramiel!

"Give it a wave and lets see how it feels."

This was surreal.

More so than stepping in the shop for the first time since he had received his own wand was the fact that he was her with his DAUGHTER.

HIS. DAUGHTER.

The brightest star in their five familial constellation, next to himself that is.

And his chest was swelling larger than the Sun five billion years from now. Even more difficult not to do so in light of what had happened to his nephew, though he fought off those thoughts as well for now to focus solely on Andromeda.

"Shoot for the Moon, Andromeda," he nodded sagely off to the side before nodding his head towards the wand being offered to him. While he found the quote itself to be absurd - because shooting for the moon and then FALLING among the stars was the most preposterous set of physics he had ever heard in his life - it provided a certain sense of optimism. Once that his children seemed to appreciate.

Perhaps it lay more in the novelty of their father using such an unscientifically sound set of encouraging words more than anything else.

He watched her take the wand and then pause. "Just give it a try, and tell me how it feels." Encouragement, plenty of it. "Trust yourself."
Hmm. So if she had big kneecaps, her wand wood should be thinner? How does it work? She'd always thought it was arbitrary, you pick the wand that sounds best and off to magic school it was. Her grandfather had never mentioned that intuition played any sort of role.

Cherie decided she quite liked this new method of wand choosing. She always thought intuition was like magic.

"Bon, I will try." Swish. That's what he'd said she was supposed to do. With a quick glance back at Primrose, Cherie's jaw tightened as she lift the wand and swished. The feeling was.. indescribable. Something that looked like a golden fog poured out of the wand, and it smelled like the French summer, like the river flowing through Amiens in the heat, she could almost hear the ducks.

This had to be her wand. "I want this wand, Monsieur. The language mix up didn't register in the eleven year old's mind, her eyes not lifting from the wand in her hand. Her wand.

"Its alright. No need to apologise." Ram said in his usual rather unflappable way. He wasn't one to get upset. A little awkward sometimes, to be sure, but not in his job. Not with kids.

He wasn't about to hold this little girl accountable for the interruption, but he did want to help her on her way, which he couldn't do if the interruptions continued.

So lets see....

"11 3/4 inch brittle redwood with griffin claw core... that's 11 galleons," The rareness and such, " Strengthening & Conditioning oils are 4 galleons apiece, polish is 1 Galleon, 8 Sickles. So that's 20 galleons and 8 sickles. Would you like a box for it? I'll throw one in free, and some polishing cloths too."

That was a good sign. Ramiel smiled and adjusted his glasses. "I think you can tell that it is! Youve got 9 2/3 solid ebony with jobberknoll feather core right there. Beautiful wood. Ebony is a good martial wand, excellent for dueling and strong in transfiguration magic and is well suited to defensive, protective and dispelling dark magic. Er... it does tend to take some time for spells to be mastered with an Ebony wand, but its a good all-rounder. 9 galleons, 6 sickles for the wand - do you want any wandcare equipment with that one?"

"Ah! Lovely!" What a nice sight. Seeing a wand match like that! "It most certainly is! 10 1/2 stiff hickory with hippogriff feather core - 9 galleons! Will that be all?" He gestured at the board with various wand care products and holsters that she could add on to her purchase.

Suddenly the measuring tape, which was minding its own business, was pulled backwards and away from another child that it had been measuring and its end was SUCKED into the tip of the wand. Tergeo'd! Ram reacted quickly, catching the measuring tape's other end looked at the wand in astonishment. Well. He'd not known that Tergeo could be used in such a way! Even if it wasn't on purpose, of course. Carefully he took the wand and gave it a little shake, pulling the measuring tape loose. The measuring tape, traumatized and shuddering, wrapped itself around Ram, looking for reassurance. He put the wand away and offered the little girl another.

"Don't worry! Its alright, try this one." And meanwhile he'd try to reassure the measuring tape and send it back to work again.

Ram watched and then smiled in delight, adjusting his glasses slightly as he watched the wand tell everyone that this person was its person.

"You have 12 inch delicate sycamore with unicorn hair core. Lovely wand. A wand of Sycamore is not for the mundane or routine activities of every day life, and its brilliance will fade if it is not applied to more adventurous and unexpected pursuits. It is a wand that thrives on spontaneous use, and if allowed to become 'bored' Sycamore wands have been known to spontaneously burst into flame.A curious trait. And of course Unicorn hair wands are very faithful to their owner. They are one of the least likely to fluctuate or experience blockages in the magic they produce. Well suited to charms and transfigurations and excellent for healing spells. As a core it tends to be difficult to turn toward the Dark Arts, and is more in tune with subtle and delicate magic as opposed to flash and bangs, so more cerebral and gentle individuals often pair with this core. Unicorn hair wands vary greatly depending on the wand wood they are paired with, and while they don't always make the most powerful wands, they are consistent and reliable. These wands are prone to melancholy if mishandled and may suffer wand wilt if a more bull-headed witch or wizard tries to wield them. An unusually balanced wand all around. 10 galleons 1 sickle for that wand. Any other items you'll be wanting? I would suggest a strengthening oil - 4 galleons, and Magical Resonance Protection Salve - 4 Galleons, 15 Sickles, 2 Knuts, to best keep your wand in good order.""

It was nice seeing parents get so excited. Ramiel shot the man a smile but then watched the child closely as she took the wand... and..... ah. No. Pity. Ram vanished the puff of smoke and picked up the discarded wand, carefully stowing it in its box once more. It would find a home eventually, but not with this young girl.

"Alright, no trouble. Lets give the other one a whirl." He offered it to her.

!!!!!!!!!!

Colorful sparks shot out of the end of it and she might be crazy because it smelled like grass in the morning and Uncle's cooking

"Like star dust on fairy wings....is this the one????"

She was sure she'd be able to justify it in the end. "Yes, please. A box and polishing cloths would be grand. T'e sickles are t'e silver ones, yes?" She was only half asking for her own confirmation and started to count out 8 silver coins and placed them on the counter before recounting the gold coins in her hand. Aoife added them to the silver in increments of 5 until all 20 galleons and 8 sickles were. Her coin purse was just about empty now.

"T'ank you, sir!" Aoife smiled warmly as she collected her purchases and moved aside for the next kid. As she passed Gráinne in line, she discreetly reached out and ran a hand through her sister's hair as if it were a spider. Now it was time to find Ma and explain why she needed more money.

Gráinne just watched the shopkeeper for a moment only pausing to look at Aoife as she told her not to be rude…she was rude? Really? She had only meant to say she liked Aoife’s wand and inquire about a fitting herself…maybe, maybe the issue was more that she was too loud and headstrong as mum always said she could be. She was a bull in a china shop. A brash little thing with hardly an off switch.

” ‘course I’ll wait…I jus’ didn’t know if you were the only one here” she explained as calmly as she could. Tape what tape? With the mention of measurements all Gráinne could do was watch in bewilderment as the tape measure began to twist around her wrist before shifting along the length of her right arm. ”it tickles” she whispered the words in a half laugh. Liam probably hated this, really she hoped their bother had hated it.

Looking up at the shopkeeper as he helped Aoife all Grainne could do was watch. ”your wands look rather nice sir,” she was trying not to interrupt but heck, that had to be said. They were pretty and magical. That was when she felt it, Aoife’s hands tickling over her hair like a spiders legs. ”Aoife staaahp” she hissed at her sister with a smile on her face.

When it was right it was obvious, that was for sure. Ramiel nodded, his eyes crinkling along with the genuine smile that he gave the girl.

"Sure is. 9 3/4 inch whippy birch with phoenix feather core you've got there. Quite a lovely one. 9 Galleons, 1 sickle. Will you be wanting a holster or any wand care products with that one?"

She couldn't help it as she asked, "Sir, what really goes into the wand matching process? I've heard that it's mostly based on personality, but does that wand take anything else into account?"
Ram grabbed one of the nice wooden wandboxes for the girl and packaged it up before tallying and taking the galleons she counted out.

"Of course, personality is a big part of how wands match, but its also a question of balance. Wands are quasi-sentient, have you, ah, heard this term before?" Ram said, addressing her question as he packaged her purchases up. "The state of quasi-sentience exists because wands often seem to have their own idea about how a spell ought to be cast, and whether or not the magic will work as intended." He explained, and pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose with one finger.

"It is interesting to see how the various affinities, as influenced by the balance of wood and core, actually manifest in an individual's spellwork, but before that we take into account the magical resonance of any given wand alongside the resonance and intent of its wielder. You'll find that a balance is required there too, a balance in both physical fit, and in magical fit, you might say." He slid her package across the counter.

"The measurements that we take have been proven over hundreds of years to have correlations with how the components of the wand balance together and with any one witch or wizard. Its rather complicated. There are formulas of all sorts that can be used for a more scientific and logical approach, but I find that intuition is as important as anything else when it comes to making a match." And... he was getting carried away, especially given this was a conversation with an eleven year old. Goodness. Ram smiled a bit sheepishly.

"If you're interested in the topic, I suggest reading' The Will, The Word, and the Wand : A Compendium of British Wandlore' by Ira Banner," Who incidentally was Ollivanders current owner, Ram was simply employed to work in the store and deal with customers, something that Mr Banner was terrible at, "And 'A Look at Quasi-Sentience' by Gervaise Ollivander. The Hogwarts library should hold copies of both."Of course he sold the books there too but it was a bit much for a kid. Perhaps one day she'd develop her interest and want to learn about wandmaking herself!

Cherie did not turn to look at the man speak as he told her about her wand, her eyes still unable to lift from it. A wand of her own. A delicate sycamore wand that does not like to be bored. The words registered and they were enough for Cherie to blink up at the shopkeeper. Bored? Wands could be bored?

Without missing a beat, Cherie reached into the backpack she carried around at all times and pulled out a spiral notebook and pencil. The wand went between her teeth as she set the notebook down on the counter and rose up on her tiptoes to begin writing down everything the man said. It was a jumble of French and English but Cherie did not care, she wanted to know all of this, and she would not remember otherwise. She even wrote down the price, ten sickles and 1 knut. No, ten galleons and one sickle. ... Wands are expensive.

Done, Cherie took the wand again and nodded. "Yes, please, everything. I have enough money," Cherie held up her little coin bag to show him. Grown ups always asked her to show she had enough money, because she was a child.

Lana looked longingly at the wands which were neatly stacked on the shelves all around the store and wondered which of them would be pulled for her to try out first. She amused herself for a bit just watching the other students trying out their wands, growing even more eager for her turn with each passing moment. Patience, Lana, she told herself. "Well that's an impossible question to answer easily or quickly. It takes years of learning how to be a wandmaker. If you're curious perhaps you can take a look at a book about it, its fascinating stuff. They should have some basic books about wandmaking at Flourish and Blotts. The ones I have are a little more advanced I'm afraid, and may not be all that illuminating."

ooc: Ramiel already addressed your character in the post I linked below.

Ramiel waited for the child to answer him but.... nothing. Well. Well then he supposed she was just looking after all? No matter. He supposed she'd join the line and be measured by the measuring tape when she was ready. Then he could help her be fitted to a wand. That was if she was planning to do more than just look.

_________

Finishing up with the children that preceded her, Ramiel finally beckoned the overeager twin (Optimist.Prime) to step to the front. He beckoned the measuring tape closer too and took a look at the measurements. He considered them and then adding in the factors he'd already gotten to know via her somewhat obnoxious interruptions earlier he went to the stacks to select some potential wands for her to test.

He offered the first one.

"Take this and give it a swish."

Lana jumped when she realized she was being spoken to. "Yes, this is my first wand. Sorry about that...just excited to be here, that's all." She blushed a bright red and grinned sheepishly, not seeing the slight frowns on her parents' faces.
