Yates has had half the series, so I'm inclined to say him since he's led us to the finish, but imma gonna go with....nope. Yates. Can't get over the greatness of DH Part 2.

Yates is a good director, don't get me wrong, but I really am not a fan of his style. While he is really good with details, I just don't like the way he handles other things.
Newell or Cuaron are kind of tied for my favorites, in different ways.
Cuaron just directed a really brilliant movie; I honestly think it's one of the best films of 2004. Despite all the cuts and changes, it's one heck of a movie. If there's only one HP movie I had to watch for the rest of my life, I think it'd be that one. (It is a pretty hard decision, though!)
Newell did a great job, I think, of keeping the sense of magic while adding extremely dark stuff to GoF. I think 4 is definitely the darkest one, it's so eerie and scary. This is also the first time we ever changed composers, so that had big role too, but just the balance of GoF is great. And once again, Newell took an ENORMOUS book, cut some things (regrettable), and made an outstanding film.
Yates. Well. I really like Yates, I do, but I always thought he was missing something vital with his direction. Gone is Dan's acting in GoF when he returned Cedric to the stands (those performances were just bone-chilling). Not to say that Dan doesn't do a great job in the rest of the films, but in my opinion, I always thought Yates sort of... downgraded things, held some things back, etc.
Oh, and Chris was, well, awesome. He made the magic come to life.
I really like all of the directors in their own ways.

I would say Yates because out of all 8 of the Harry Potter movies, if I had to chose a favorite, it would be one of the last 4 movies instead of the first 4 movies. That's probably not a coincidence... |

I would defintely choose Alfonso! He not only stuck to the books, but the magic was there (and not in the childish way it was portrayed in the first two films).
He also balanced the movie perfect! There was just enough of magic, darkness, excitement, love, sadness and heart-warming scenes! I think his take-on of POA was brilliant!
