Richard Harris, no doubt! He is exactly how I imagine Dumbledore to be; Kind, quiet but full of power, more silent then screaming when speaking and he looks exactly like how I imagined him.

Definitely Harris. He seemed much more eccentric and Dumbledore-y.

I love Richard Harris as Dumbledore! He's so much more clamer and able to control his emotions. I feel like Michael Gambon's Dumbledore yells too much and is too much like Gandalf!

Most definetely Richard Harris. To me, Dumbledore is all about love and kindness. That's what I got from Richard, he was just nicer, more open. Michael Gambon was good to, but I just didn't get the same kind of gentleness that came with the Richard Harris. Guarranteed that Michael made me believe that Voldemort could fear Dumbledore, but I felt that he didn't suit Dumbledore's behaviour as it's depicted in the books.

I like them both actually. I think they both portrayed our favorite bearded wizard really well, exactly as I pictured him while I was reading!

I loved Richard Harris - may he rest in peace, he was a wonderful man and played the perfect Dumbledore. But, with Gambon...he took a little getting use to, but when I finally did I loved him as well...

I liked Richard Harris better. Gambon was a little too harsh and hectic for Dumbledore.

I love them both, but I prefer Michael Gambon. Don't get me wrong, Richard Harris gave us a spectacular portrayal of Dumbledore for the first two movies, but I personally always imagined Dumbledore as being a kind but still powerful character. Harris gives us the kind, caring, gentle version. Gambon gives us a more edgy, forceful version that also includes the kind side of Dumbledore, which I think worked perfectly in the long run for the character.

Richard played Dumbledore perfectly, while Micheal tried too hard. There almost too much dumbledore for him to be a reserved old man.

I love love love Richard Harris and when he died I thought I couldn't watch the movies anymore because I couldn't imagine any other Dumbledore and now... Well, I actually like Gambon better now and I know I'm in the minority. I think Harris was just perfect for the first movies, then Gambon fits better.

Richard Harris. Defiantly, he was just how I imagined Dumbledore to be, but then when he died, and Gambon took over, he wasn't as much a Dumbledore as Harris. He tried a little bit too hard to be Harris, rather than Dumbledore, by doing a very noticeable Irish accent at times.

Michael Gambon did a finer job of portraying Dumbledore's personality, in my opinion. He had a little more pep in his step, and his facial cues were more reactive and interpretive.

I like Richard because he caught the essence of Dumbledore, but Gambon's always made me feel better. Maybe I just found the later films more interesting? (I was like thirteen)

Richard is more soft, tender and loving...but Michael is more fit for the last series, because i think we needed much "darker and fierce" Dumbledore

I think Richard Harris fits more like the character that JK Rowling wrote in the book. I really did like both of them, but I will give my vote to Richard Harris.

When I was younger I always preferred Richard Harris. He played the role brilliantly and was the definition of calm and cool, exactly as the book had him written.

But recently I've been appreciating Michael Gambon's performance. He took Dumbledore into a different direction (not always a bad thing) and brought a new energy to the character.

So to answer the question, I have no preference. I'm able to appreciate both actors for what they did and they were both great.

When I saw this thread, this is my exact thoughts.

The first dumbledore seems very giddy and grandfather like and the 2nd dumbledore is very powerful and exactly how I image him when i read the books also.

Clearly this is an old thread, but I liked Richard Harris way better. I feel like the 2nd one was too harsh for how I pictured him to be!

Micheal Gambon is my favorite. There is just something about him, the voice, how he acts, thats dumbledore for me.
