I liked both really. But I prefer Harris more. Not saying that Gambon didn't do a good job, he did well honestly in 3-6. But I just prefer Richard Harris' portrayal.

I think Gambon was a better actor playing Dumbledore than the 1-2 guy. Still love them both.

This was a tough decision to make, I love both of them, but I think Richard Harris is my favorite between the two. The problem I had with deciding, is that both actors brought something to the characterization of Dumbledore, and I enjoy how they have both portrayed Dumbledore.

Richard Harris hands down! I think my argument to support this is the scene in Goblet of Fire where Dumbledore almost literally ATTACKS harry and yells at him did you put your name in the goblet of fire!! all angry and mad...that is SO not dumbledore..maybe it's not his fault though maybe it's the director...but Harris would have played the part magnificently through the whole series..and for people that say he was too kind, i think it's because in the first 2 books he never really gets fierce or anything so he didn't get a chance to portray that side of dumbledore but being the superb actor he is i'm sure he would have nailed it!! look at gandalf in the lord of the rings! at the beginning he's all fun loving wizard, but when it gets down to it, he shows his power and fights! cuz ian mckellen is a great actor as was richard harris

The way I see it, Richard Harris really portrays how Dumbledore is supposed to be which is calm and relaxed. Did you notice how Michael got all jumpy and worked up during GoF when they found out someone put Harry's name in the goblet? The book clearly says "Dumbledore asked in a calm tone" not "Dumbledore shrieked at Harry's face like a madman"

I liked Richard Harris.

I was young (9 years old) when I saw the Sorcerer's Stone. He was my favorite Dumbledore because I liked him and he was my favorite. Richard Harris portrayed Dumbledore on how I interpreted he was in the series.

I was very sad when I found out he passed away shortly after the Chamber of Secrets movie. It was sad and it was like a part of me died in a way.

Then Michael Gambon came. I didn't like him at all. Of course, we all had to get used to him. I didn't like Gambon's portrayal in the Goblet of Fire...he was too jumpy and it wasn't something I was expecting.
He did a good job playing Dumbledore, no doubt, but I prefer Richard Harris.

R.I.P. Richard Harris!

I like Richard Harris.
I thought he portrayed Dumbledore better and really got his character.
Although it's hard to envision him playing Dumbledore in the newer movies.
I don't know.

Richard Harris, hands down. The Goblet of Fire scene where Dumbledore practically jumps down Harry's throat interrogating him, frightened me. That's not Dumbledore. That's a manically driven man, something uncharacteristic to Dumbledore in my eyes.

I really liked the first one, he fit it so well... but I did like the second one too.
they both did very well, but the first was who it should have been.

I related so much to Dumbledore through Michael Gambon. Eventhough Richard Harris is a brilliant actor and I saw him in Count of Monte Cristo, it's just that, he only had a little time to portray the character. If you don't pay attention, you won't even notice, they are different actors.

Well, I prefer the later Dumbledore.

This is an incredibly difficult question to ask. In SS and COS, Dumbledore wasn't really a big character. He welcomed students, he gave orders and talked to Harry at the end of the movies. Of course, usually with at least 1 significant scene in the middle (Mirror of Erised, Hagrid's Hut) but not much. He was important to a degree, but not to the degree where people would have been crying over his death.

POA was more of Dumbledore's coming out and the character built significantly through throughout the series after POA. Harris was beloved, but I feel people are more likely to say Harris for a couple reasons: 1) He passed on early in the terms of the series and we got such a small sample of his potential. Naturally, we want more. 2) He was easy to love, not showing any bad to Dumbledore. So when people constantly look at Dumbledore grabbing Harry and questioning him about putting his name in the cup in GOF, we automatically say "No way, that's not Dumbledore" and dock Gambon for what was probably the director's intention. Heck, Jo may have even liked it more that way. She did have a good level of control over how characters were portrayed.

I say Gambon was better for the overall series in an unthinkable landslide. Dumbledore screaming and writhing on the rocks while Harry gives him the water to drink in the cave (HBP) is one of the best acted scenes in that entire series. Harris wouldn't have been able to give that intensity. Same goes for the intensity in the battle at the ministry in OOTP. Perhaps, the Harris portrayal was more of how Jo saw it, but once Columbus left the helm after COS and the wheel of Directors came in, the movies got darker and more serious. And Gambon fit that perfectly. Honestly, Harris may have held it back. Not insulting his acting skills, but Gambon just worked.

I, originally, thought that no one could ever replace Richard Harris as he was the perfect Dumbledore to me back when I was 10; however, Michael Gambon just has this flare and humor to him that I think really suits the whimsical Dumbledore we have in the books. I couldn't have seen Harris playing Dumbledore with that much sass and that's what I really like about Gambon!

Hard to say really??? i think they were good in their own ways and for micheal it was harder of course since he had to play a character that already has been casted.

I'm actually a little shocked Richard has more votes.
Maybe it's just me but I never like Richard Harris much as Dumbledore. I always thought of Dumbledore as this powerful, energenic, strong wizard..much like how Michael portray him.
Richard always seems to weak for Dumbledore, to me at least. He was soft spoken, and just seemed to 'old' for Dumbledore. I know Dumbledore was old but Dumbledore had a younger spirit.

idk if i'm making any sense but Michael was always more my image of Dumbledore

Personally I prefer Harris, when I saw Gambon's Dumbledore he just wasn't how I pictured him while I was reading the books. I always pictured him as a kind and gentle old man, and that's what I saw when watching Harris, however when I saw Gambon I saw almost the complete opposite.. (besides the age of course)

I'd say both. I know a lot of people say Harris but he was just perfect for the first few films (as Dumbledore doesn't play a real action role until the OOTP).

HOWEVER, Harris was a bit too gentle... and I could say visa versa for Gambon... (Too agressive) Both together though are the perfect Dumbledore as together they deliver Dumbedore's two sides!

I just... I never understood WHY people DON'T like Gambon. o_O
I love Michael Gambon, and his Dumbledore was perfect for the later movies. I do agree I was a little shocked at his actions in GOF but you know the further the books go the more we see him has a complete man/Wizard, he wasn't perfect, but he tried to be. The whole tirade against Harry in GOF was mostly out of fear. Harry is so important to the wizarding world, the thought of losing him in some sort of trick, would have been devastating.
Anyway I voted for Richard but I also loved Michael.

Richard Harris. Maybe he was a bit too quiet and frail for Dumbledore in the later films but I'd much prefer that to the aggressive Dumbledore that Gambon portrayed. "DID YAH PUT YAH NAHM IN DA GOBLET OF FYAHHHH."

I like them both but Richard Harris had a Dumbledore-esque air to him which Michael Gambon never really managed show as Dumbledore.

But I do think that Gambon did great as Dumbledore in his own way

I want to add to this since I recently saw an interview with gambon. He basically explains that he hadn't read any of the books or looked at Harris' performance. He just read the script and acted as himself.

Whilst I think this is slightly er, how do I put this delicately, lazy, he does have a certain mystique about him which I think works well
