I'd go for Richard Harris. As many have said, he IS dumbledore. The way he acted, the way he moved, everything. And yes, he may be old and kinda loving, but I think that was what Dumbledore really was. And even though he was like that, he still gave the presence of being strong and powerful. But of course, Gambon played his part well too. It was just not Dumbledore-ish for me...

First of all they are both really good actors, but I did like Harris better, because he actually looks like Dumbledore to me. He's not perfect - but he is close.

I do get why a lot of people don't like Gambon, and I don't think that it is his fault. He did what he could with the part, and let's face it: Dumbledore is poorly written in the movies. I absolutely hate movie Dumbledore. He yells at people and gets really furious at times where the real Dumbledore would be calm and collected. And the costume and hair departments have changed a lot that makes him look less like Dumbledore than Harris did.

Also, I think that Gambon would be perfect as Aberforth.

I feel like the overwhelming majority of fans I've talked to over the years really disliked Gambon's as compared to Harris', and I've just never really understood, I think Gambon's done a perfectly fine job. Frankly, I think they cast a bit too old with Harris to begin with. True, the character is already over 100 years old, but this is obviously far from the typical 100 year old person we're used to thinking about in modern society.

For one thing, can you imagine Harris playing the final battle scene with Voldemort in the end of OOTP? I couldn't picture him being nearly that active and agile looking.

It would be the same if, say, Daniel Radcliffe died (knock on wood D=) and they had to recast Harry for the final movie. Beyond the difficult transition for a very visual audience to adjust to a new face, new appearance, etc., of course the acting style would be incredibly different. You cannot expect any two people to act that same. And while Harris was indeed a great loss for the films, I don't feel Gambon has done BADLY as Dumbledore.

Realize that the director is in on how the actor portrays his character. While the director probably gives them some sort of freedom to play the role the way they desire, the director has a vision, a way they want to see this scene and if they don't one hundred percent like the way an actor has played their character, they will do a cut, a re-do, and will do this however necessary until they are satisfied.

I really like this statement, and agree with much of it. Harris portrayed a wonderful Dumbledore in the earlier movies, where all was innocent, before an immediate darkness had fallen. Oh, true, Harris probably could have played out a more serious Dumbledore, adjusted to the darker mood, but Gambon HAS done that.

You cannot simply compare the two because, while it's the same role, they are different people. And, unfortunately, we cannot bring Harris back. It is unfair to Gambon to not give him a chance; I'm sure he's doing the best he can, considering the circumstances.
I agree 100% with this statement. I enjoyed both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon's portrayals (though not so much in GoF, though Gambon can't entirely be blamed for that).

Richard Harris looked way too old for the first two films, to be honest, he looked like he was going to die any moment. If they could of brought him back for HBP when Dumbledore is supposed to look like he is about to die.

Kind of hard to say really and its a bit of an unfair comparison to no fault of anyone. I personally like Gambin but without having seen Harris do any of the darker films its just too hard to really determine who would of been better. I think both guys did extremely well given their time in that role. A slight edge goes to Gambin for me but mainly because of the body of work involved.

I agree, Richard Harris was perfect for the first two movies, but I just can't see him fighting Inferi in the cave in HBP or Voldemort in the MOM in OotP.

Richard Harris acted more like the Dumbledore described by Rowling. Michael Gambon always acts a little restless, while Dumbledore is always described as calm and relaxed in the books.

I like them both, but my personal preference is Richard Harris. I think he just "fit" Dumbledore better, no? Both actors can PLAY him, but Harris can BE him; the character is more fluid with him. <3

I could be fun, if you want, pensive, smart... I could be whatever you want.

I definitely liked more Richard Harris ... Michael is very aggressive to play Dumbledore, I don´t like him, not because he is bad actor but the role is too big for him.

Richard Harris. I felt that he was how I imagined Dumbledore. Strong, but sweet.

Michael is often too aggressive for my liking.

Richard Harris definately because he is the more authentic one of the two and he played his role very well and characteristically.

Richard Harris was better. Too bad he passed away.
Michael Gambon did a good job as Dumbledore too, but I think he needs to be calmer.

I can't really make a real choice, I like them both in a different way.
Richard Harris was sort of a granddad I think haha, but he did look more like how I pictured him. Michael Gambon seemed better for the whole war thing, he looks tougher and all. :'D

Personally, I liked Richard Harris more because he had that grandfatherly look and feel towards him that made everyone love him like they love Dumbledore.
I like Michael Gambon, but he isn't as calm and delicate as Richard was.

Of course, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon are excellent actors and portrayed Dumbledore well in the movies they were in. However, I personally prefer Michael over Richard. Richard captured the benevolent side of Dumbledore well, certainly, but that's not all Dumbledore is. He's not considered the greatest wizard of the age just for being a nice guy. He has to be powerful and actually seem like the sort of person Voldemort would be afraid of. And while its true Richard never got the real chance to actually try to be those things since it wasn't in the first two movies, I have a hard time imagining the Dumbledore of the first two movies being able to effectively battle Voldemort in the fifth movie, nor do I see him as the sort of person Voldemort would fear. That side of Dumbledore, the one of the powerful, confident wizard, I think Michael captured perfectly, and he still captured the witty, benevolent side of him as well regardless of how he acted in GoF (which I don't entirely blame on him anyway).

I also see Michael capturing the darker, more "iffy" side of Dumbledore better - that manipulative, "for the greater good" side of him. I'm not entirely sure why. I suppose he just looks more capable of mistakes, of actually being human, whereas Richard seemed more fully benevolent and incapable of making very big mistakes - "grandfatherly," I think some people have described him as. Too much like a perfect grandfather, I guess.

I also prefer the way Michael looks as Dumbledore. Richard's Dumbledore had waaaay too much hair Not that it's really up to them how their characters' look, but still. Michael looks more like Dumbledore to me.

There is absolutely no question that Michael Gambons portrayal of Dumbledore is FAR FAR superior to that of Richard Harris. Whilst Harris was obviously a wonderful actor, he made Dumbledore too old, frail and rigid. Dumbledore whilst old in years, is written to be energetic, eccentric and fun. Gambon brings that out in him. You could hardly see Harris swinging his arm round firing that spell and battling Voldemort as he does in OOTP.

Gambon for me is exactly as he is in the books. Harris was just to Merlin like.

I am kind of blown away that Harris is winning the poll. I wish no disrespect to Harris, because he did a fantastic job, but - Gambon really captured Dumbledore for me.

I have to say that I like them both, but am leaning towards Richard Harris. I feel like he captured the role of Dumbledore more for me. I'm not saying Michael Gambon is a bad actor, but Harris seemed more like a Dumbledore to me.
They both did a great job, though.
