Hogwarts RPG Name: Sean Davidson Graduated | Which changes from book to film did you like and dislike most?
Many parts of the books were left out in the movies. Sometimes entire characters were left uncast (Winky, Ludo Bagman) and sometimes entire changes or lack of scenes happened (Lack of quidditch in OOTP). What changes irked you more than any? And what changes did you like or think was smart on the part of the screenwriter and director?
I can start. I was upset at the lack of house elves throughout Hogwarts, as well as there being no Peeves shown or mentioned. As for scenes though, I thought it was smart of Yates to not have a battle in Hogwarts at the end of HBP. There was "the big one" coming in the next book. Two in three movies could have been redundant and looked too similar, especially coming after the Ministry Battle in OOTP.
Discuss! And keep it civil! Everyone has different opinions that may be controversial or different than the status quo (*cough* I hate Ginny *cough*).

I think the scene where Harry and voldemort battle it out for the last time was rather disappointing, don't get me wrong it was a good scene, however in the book they were surrounded by the school. In the movie it was just them outside.. It wasn't anything major but it kind of bothered me when I saw it.

these changes from book to film are why i'm rereading the entire series. I don't want the films to brainwash their storylines into me.

The Quidditch World Cup in GoF. I was furious the first time I saw it in theaters. It could have been so awesome. But it really doesn't advance the plot all that much and from a pace/timing standpoint I can understand.
Cutting the Department of Mysteries scene by what could have been a good half hour... Sigh...
The lack of a fight at Hogwarts at the end of HBP. Yeah, yeah, "We didn't want to spoil the epic fight that will be in DH Pt. 2," Dude, I want a battle scene. I don't really care about the implications it has on Part 2. Jo managed to pull it off in the books!
They completely ruined Ginny Weasley in the movies. She's supposed to be a stunningly gorgeous, fiery, independent girl. She's nowhere near this in the films, we only get little inklings of it.
Because of cutting Dobby out, I liked how they had Neville accomplish practically everything Dobby did for Harry in 4 and 5 (Gillyweed, Room of Requirment, etc.) Very elegant.

Let me start at the start. Hogwarts. There are NO moving staircases in any of the books. This bit of "movie bling" drives me crazy. All the bits of "movie bling" drive me batty. I call it "movie bling" because it is not anywhere in the books, and it seems just thrown in to make Hogwarts seem cool to the movie goers. In the reality of the books, Hogwarts is so much more awesome.
Also, in the half blood prince, I am offended by the whole "Ginny helping Harry hide the potions book" thing. SO DID NOT HAPPEN LIKE THAT!

I personally didn't like any of the changes they made in the movie. All I wish is for all the film to be loyal to the books. A few changes or lines to make us laugh will be good enough, why change so many?
If I was to list the changes I disliked the most, it would probably go on forever (the final duel of Harry and Voldemort, the way the Half-Blood Prince was filmed, etc). Let's just say that I dislike any changes in the movie that made the plot/story...unreasonable.

I wished they'd put my favourite part in:
Snape: Do you remember me telling you, Potter, that we were using NON-VERBAL spells?
Harry: Yes.
Snape: Yes, SIR.
Harry: There's no need to call me sir, Professor.
LOL

I have three big things that irked me. 1: The exclusion of the house elves in Goblet of Fire. It was a central part of the story to me. 2: Not having Quidditch in Order of the Phoenix, that was a bit important for Half-Blood Prince, in that Ron and Ginny would already have had some experience with Quidditch. 3: The Gaunt house and sub-storyline. It was completely left out! That was one of the things I was looking forward to most in the movie, but they didn't put it in!

I think the final 'showdown' bewteen Harry and Voldemort where Voldemort finally dies could have been bigger_It's the killing of Voldemort after all!
I suppose, it it were possible they could have included as much of the book as possible in the film as they could have split some other films in two and the journey would have been longer.
Also, in Order of the Phoenix, they could have at least included Luna's Quidditch commentry because I think it expresses her personality a lot.

First, the relation Ron/Hermione in the Order of the Phoenix, when they were prefects, the tension with Harry.
Then, in the Deathly Hallows, the history of Dumbledore, and the torture of Hermione.
I like Neville in the final he's so great.

Book to movie: the battle in HBP, some Fred and George parts and a couple minor scenes.
But there are also some lines that are in the movies and aren't in the books that I liked. Tbh, I wasn't really satisfied with the ending of DH. Even in the book it felt kinda shortened and lacked emotion..

I didn't like any of the changes that were made. In GoF, it would've been better if they had given more importance to the World Cup. The exclusion of house-elves angered me as well.
In OotP, they should have given more importance to the Dept of Mysteries scene. That could've given the dreadfully boring movie an interesting half-an-hour.
And I think they completely destroyed Ginny in the movies. She's supposed to be brave, gorgeous and independent, but in the movies she's shown as an over-emotional and weak girl
