Scribbulus Writing Implements

https://i.postimg.cc/s2j2bgqY/scribbulus-banner7.jpg
In the end north side of the street of Diagon Alley, sandwiched between Quality Quidditch Supplies and an intersecting alley that leads to Knockturn Alley, sits a small building made of light grey stones. A peal of small bells made of gold tinkle together in a rather quiet unison as the glass door of the shop opens and reveals the stationary supplies store, which is brightly lit thanks to the front glass window that allows sunlight to filter inside the shop. The smell of the store is a surprisingly pleasant combination of wood, old parchment, ink and, shockingly enough, scented candles.

Every single inch of the store seems to be crammed with shelves full of the artifacts sold at the shop, and though it might look and sound messy, the place is surprisingly organized, and whatever item that costumers might be looking for, can undoubtedly be found easily; rolls of parchment, stationery sets, quills made of the most unthinkable and exotic feathers, and every imaginable sort of decorative paper -– you think of it, and this store has it. Inks are the place's specialty, and as such, here you'll find ink of every colour and style that you could possibly imagine.

Behind the tall and smooth wooden counter, the shopkeeper can normally be found. With a frown on his forehead, the shopkeeper is usually busy sorting through piles of parchment, which would be stock orders, bills, magazines, or just plain letters that have been addressed to him. This is the place where you come if you are in need of help, or to pay for the items you wish to acquire at Scribbulus Writing Implements.

Algamus 12-14-2018 07:07 AM

Algamus was being his important elf self today. All elfs has busy elf business in Diagon Alley, but Algamus has the very extremely most important and busy elf business, because not only did Algamus has shopping to do for Hogwarts, but as head elf Algamus also has the important job of telling all the other elfs what shopping they has to do, and he enjoyed to do that very much, he did.

Algamus picked the things to buy that were the most needed to be careful with, the things that he did not trust any of the other elves to be as most careful with as he! Inks needed careful elfs because inks had glass bottles and inkwells that might break, and inks were messy and if ink bottles broke then ink bottles made messes, and Algamus did not ever break things or make messes, that was why he was the head elf for a very long time and now that Hogwarts had only elves and not a human caretaker, elf jobs were more and Algamus was even more head elfy than he had ever been before!

It was inks for professors, and new inkwells for professors, and quills for professors, and many parchments for professors and all on the rolled-up list that Algie brandished in front of him like a scepter as he popped into sight in the center of the store, big elfy eyes gleaming. Algamus would shop now!

Seeing as he'd snapped the majority (read: all) of his quills and had resorted to borrowing (read: taking) other peoples towards the end of last year, Józef had begrudgingly stopped in Scribbulus when he'd got to Diagon Alley.

And by begrudgingly stopped, he'd been forced to go with the incentive of pocket money if he returned with some new quills.

Of course, he'd barely been in the shop for five minutes before he'd been distracted by the GLOW IN THE DARK ink. And it had been another two minutes before he got distracted by the CLICKY MUGGLE FOUR COLOUR PENS.

Ray, polishing the counter, blinked.

"There's a house elf in my shop," he said, looking around.

An elf. In his shop.

Of course, his darling Hester wasn't there to listen to him. Nobody was. Except an elf.

"Hello," he said, followed by another blink. "Can I help you Sir?"

Scribbulus was one of the more boring stops Nettie had on her trip to Diagon Alley today. So, naturally, she went there first. Get the BORING shops out of the way, and then it was time for FUN stuff. And ICE CREAM! Smiling happily to herself as she walked in, thinking of the lemon sherbet she'd be ordering lately, she began to look through the shelves, looking for some basic quills. She didn't need anything flashy. Just anything that got the job done.

Not looking where she was going, she turned a corner too sharp and accidentally waked RIGHT in to someone who was just standing there. "Oh, sorry!" she exclaimed, and then she realized it was that little irritating boy from last term. What had his name been again? Oh yeah, Józef. "Oh, it's you," she muttered quietly, wrinkling her nose a bit.

Was there ANOTHER house elf? Another elf before Algamus? He peered around too seeing only a young mister and mistress, and then blinked owlishly right back at the shopkeeper.

"Algamus is not being a sir, sir!" Elfs were not sirs, elfs were elfs! Algamus unfurled his list and spread it on the counter with a rather dramatic swish, standing up as high on his toes as he could so that his nose peeked over the edge of it. "Algamus is being from Hogwarts, sir, Algamus is buying important things for the headmaster, sir!"

Ray looked up as a young lady walked in, and over to the young gentleman in the store. Not wishing to disturb what he assumed would be a lively talk about their summer, he merely offered a nod. He was behind the counter if any assistance was required.

Second, there was a list of things he needed to purchase for the Headmaster. "Riiiight, right, yes. Well you've come to the right shop." Ray looked down to the list, reading it. Yes. yes. "What should we start with first?"

"I'm alright," Jó said brightly, hearing the voice of the shopkeeper behind him. He didn't turn around or take his eyes from the clicky pen he was holding, though - he didn't even realise how rude it would have seemed.

Nor did Józef care. He only looked up when someone WALKED RIGHT INTO HIM?!?! And he was NOT impressed, although his scowl quickly turned into an amused grin when he saw who it was. "You should be sorry, Trinetta," he couldn't help but say in response to her apology. Because it was COMPLETELY her fault, and not his for standing in the middle of the aisle, preoccupied with the clicky pen.

Which he clicked again, just for good measure.

"Algamus is knowing Algamus is in the right shop. Algamus is a very good shopper, sir!" The elf said, sounding a little crotchety about the implication that he might have ended up in the wrong place. His nose twitched a little and he sneezed a bit dramatically.

This shop? It needed an elf, it did. It needed proper elf cleanings. For a moment Algie wished he had his broom, but he was a customer and had important things, more important things to do! And the shopkeeper had to do what Algamus said, Algamus did not have to do what the shopkeeper said! His ears twitched in excitement and he straightened his back, feeling about as grand as an elf could feel.

Regretting ever stepping foot in this store, Nettie just sighed heavily. "What is THAT?" she asked, looking at the clicking thing that he was holding in his hand. It looked like a muggle pen - but why did it CLICK like that? She had to admit, it was kind of intriguing.

Józef was surprised that Nettie didn't just turn around and leave the shop, or at least head to the other side of it. He was even more surprised when she continued to talk to him.

Of course, he didn't show it - no, cool people never did. He did, however, hold the pen up to show her, a smirk on his face. "It's a pen," he started, stating the obvious. "But if you click these things -" he continued, pointing them out. "- it writes in different colours."

And he was getting five.

This was Mary's last step in her first year school shopping was parchment and quills. She picked out 2 barn and tawny owl quills, 4 standard black inks, and 6 dozen rolls of parchment. She officially had everything on the list except composition books. Composition books? She didn't see them here.

She walked up to the counter and said, "I'd like to buy these items." She then added, "I was wanting who sells composition books. The supply list says I need them, and it does not appear you have them.

Ray nodded, and turned back to busy himself with what he was doing before. He had missed having the four coloured pen when he went at Hogwarts, but in missing out of the ordinary muggle pens, he discovered the wonder of quills and ink.

Ray leapt back a whole pace when Algamus sneezed, not wishing to get in the path of any nasal mucous. Well. He hoped the droplet spread would dissipate and leave no trace on any surface.

Lost for words, Ray gave another nod. Right, yes. The top of the list. Inks for Professors. "Well we have a vast array of inks, in almost any colour possible." Ray turned to the ink displays and gestured to some of them. "The standard ones," he pointed out the sapphire, onyx, ruby, and emerald inks. There was a small assortment of standard quills in jars and strips of parchment lining the bench in case one wished to test the inks out. "All of the non-standard inks can be made lighter or darker, too." There were rows and rows of ink, arranged in an inky rainbow.

Whilst writing some gift cards for his family, with big loopy letters, he heard the tinkle of the door alerting him to another customer. This time, it was a young girl. Perhaps going into her first or second year. He offered her a wave of greeting, but she seemed to know what she needed.

"Good day," he said, as she walked up with the items she picked out. He started to count up the prices and place them into a parchment bag for her. "Right, yes, just over here," he said, stepping out from behind the counter to approach the muggle artefact areas. "These are the muggle notebooks, but the supply list refers to them as composition books." He really should change the signs on the display cabinets. He left her briefly so she could browse through the covers for one she liked, and continued to tally up her items.

She browsed through the notebook covers, picking out 9 of them. She picked out a few with stars, a few with maps, and a few with Hufflepuff covers. She took them back to the counter, satisfied with her choices.

"These ones will be good, thank you," she said.

Applauding himself silently for having a wide range of covers for the notebooks, Ray added the nine notebooks to the young ladies' pile, putting them into the parchment bag. "That comes to," he clicked the button on the till, "7 Galleons, 15 Sickles, and 7 Knuts."

"Are you hoping to be in Hufflepuff?" he asked, as he copied out the receipt.

Ray took the money and processed it, counting out the money. Precision. He liked that. He added the receipt to the bag and handed it across the counter, handles facing the young lady.

"Well I hope you find the hat placing you into Hufflepuff then," he said with a smile. "Those of the Hufflepuff House were always very kind." Not that those of other houses weren't, of course. Besides, he was sure everyone had heard the common 'I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever house you join,' to those who are set on a house. So, he didn't say it. "Enjoy your first adventure at Hogwarts. Good luck with the sorting."

It was official now: Ramiel Skeres was a resident of Diagon Alley. A working resident in fact. He'd taken an inventory of general items in the store and found that there was a bit of a shortage of some things, at least by his standards. So he had a list and some errands to run. Adulting, essentially. For no particular reason, he started at the stationery store. Hopefully he could open an account, that would make things easier.

He glanced up at the tinkling bell briefly as he pushed the door open, and stepped out of the entrance, adjusting his glasses before looking around, not sure where to start. Counter he supposed. Talk to the shopkeep first.

With the stubborn spot on the counter now cleaned, polished, and buffed, Ray looked up as the bell tinkled. The man walked up to the counter, and Ray offered a welcoming smile. "Hello Sir," he said. "Can I offer you assistance?" Show him just how many colour mixes of ink he could offer, and let him feel the high quality of parchment he offered?

He'd taken an inventory of general items in the store and found that there was a bit of a shortage of some things, at least by his standards. So he had a list and some errands to run. Adulting, essentially. For no particular reason, he started at the stationery store. Hopefully he could open an account, that would make things easier.

He glanced up at the tinkling bell briefly as he pushed the door open, and stepped out of the entrance, adjusting his glasses before looking around, not sure where to start. Counter he supposed. Talk to the shopkeep first.

"Can I offer you assistance?" Show him just how many colour mixes of ink he could offer, and let him feel the high quality of parchment he offered?

Frankly, Della had broken her wand. Well, to be even more frank, she had lost her wand first. Or maybe it had been broken before she lost it. Whatever way it shook out, when Della found her wand after a month and a half of it being unnoticeably absent, she buckled down and decided to head to Diagon Alley to see what could be done.

...three days after finding it. What? Life was busy and so was she.

But before making her way to the wand shop, she stepped into Scribbulus. Her wand was still going to be broken whether or not she made a quick detour. And Della was in need of some more glow and the dark ink. It was the best kind of ink to scribble fake moustaches on Teddy at parties.

She bounced into the shop with a grin and waved at the familiar shopkeep, "Afternoon, Ray!" Then, she addressed the man she didn't know at all, "Afternoon, Not-Ray!"

"Probably, but you don't need to call me sir. That's weird." Really it was. He wasn't from the kinds of circles where being 27 warranted a sir. But yeah yeah, assistance, that was a thing.

He was about to speak up with exactly what that assistance would entail when another person entered the store.

Not Ray? It took Ramiel a good twenty seconds to catch on. The shopkeeper was Ray. He was not. Not rocket science but also not expected.

"Uh.. Ram. I'm Ram." She was high energy wasn't she? He shot a little look at the shopkeeper and wondered if he should continue or not. Would that be rude? Probably not. Well. He looked at the man he now knew was called Ray. "I actually wanted to see about opening an account with you. I'm a new neighbour. Sort of. Not exactly. Down the other end. Ollivanders, you know it?" Of course he knew it. Who didn't know Ollivanders? "I work there. And I live there. That's the.. neighbour bit. Its literal. But uh... an account. Not for me, I mean for me, but on Ollivanders' behalf." So that would be.... good.

Uh huh. Sure.

Della wasn't suggesting anything, but Ram sounded suspiciously close to Ray. As if "Ram" had fumbled for some kind of fake name, heard Ray, and riffed. And she wasn't saying it was a fake name, BUT if it was, it was a miserable failure. Della could not help but think it was the kind of name girls gave nosy boys at parties when they wanted to be left alone.

Still, she didn't let her suspicions dampen her smile, "I'm Della." And then, just as quickly as she interjected on their conversation, she was gone. Della had come to grab some invisible ink and, Merlin, that was what she was going to do.

With her purchase in hand, she went back to the front of the store just to overhear the last nugget of fake-Ray's conversation. Ollivander's. He worked at Ollivander's. Her broken wand felt heavy in her pocket.

She bit her tongue, for only a moment, before interrupting, again, "I'm so sorry, Not-Ray, but did you say you worked at Ollivander's?"

"Okay." He said. Which was probably not the normal response to someone giving you their name, but there it was. Except... should he elaborate? "Not that you need me to tell you your name is okay. Or that its okay to tell me your name. Just... uh. Hello. I suppose." Yes and... she was going. So that was... weird. Another glance at shopkeeper Ray from Ramiel, as if to check if this sort of thing happened often.

Back to his account ques---or not. This Della had a question of her own it seemed. Ramiel nodded. "Yes, I'm the new manager. I mean, I'm also a wandmaker, but specifically I'm managing the store. In the stead of the owner. Who doesn't like people very much." And he was living there. Had he mentioned that part? But more importantly, "Er... why?"

Della did not stick around long enough to hear the bulk of Not-Ray’s overexplanation. She heard his hello, offered a polite grin that flirted with the kindness she so easily possessed, and returned a quick little, “Hey there,” of her own.

But when she returned to the front with the invisble ink in her fist and asked after his affiliation, she was rewarded with more rambling. It was kind of sweet, actually. Perhaps, she considered, Not-Ray was actually named Ram, after all. This mess of a man did not seem the nepharious fake name person she had colourfully imagined.

Della fished the shattered remains of her wand out of her pocket and hopelessly extended it to him, “I was actually going to head there after this shop. To see if anything could be done.” The WADA student didn’t use her wand much, if ever, but it was symbolic. The physical evidence that, yes, she was a witch, too.
