Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

Today was his first time in a bookstore, maybe? Heh. "Didn't you hear the book growl as you passed by it?" She shook her head at the daft boy and cracked open her book to her spot again.

She was about to walk off when he seemed to gesture for her to touch the book. Oh, that was easy. She quickly glanced at the page number of her current read, and then handed the book off to the daft boy. This could be his very first book he was holding. How special for him! The she rolled up her sleeves and stepped closer to The Monster Book of Monsters.

Bernie was an expert. She did NOT need to take a deep breath, but she did anyway, and smirked at the boy, as if to show how comfortable and EASY it was to approach the growling book. Bernie scooted right up to the front of it, as if she was going to let it bite her, and then quickly ducked down to stroke the side of the book. She ran one thin finger, nice and eaaaaasy, down the book's spine, and then grinned as it shuddered and fell open.

"See," Bernie announced proudly, "it's so easy, even a caveman could do it!"

Charlie caught that eye roll. He might have rolled his eyes right back at her, but then got to thinking. Was there something he should have noticed? This whole wizarding world seemed cool and all, but did he really know what he was getting himself into? If a book liked to have taken him out, what chance did he stand when all the dangerous stuff came along? "No, I didn't," he mumbled, a hint of disappointment to his tone.

Next thing he knew, there was a book in his hands. Not the man-eating one, but something the girl had been reading. Whatever. He held it for her, while she pretty much went right on up to the book and put him in his place. "Of course you did it," he said. "I mean, ...why not?" He probably looked like the village idiot at this point anyway. "A caveman. Right." He couldn't even muster up an insult at the point. "Well, in that case, the cavemen can have the book. I prefer mine with no teeth anyway."

He placed her own book back into her hands. "Well, anyway, thanks for umm...you know...showing me how its done and all," he added.

....

Oh! He was speaking! She blinked a bit as if trying to snap herself out of the hazy filled pink daze she seemed to be in, but it only dulled a bit. This... could be a problem.

“Thanks, I really hope so.” She said softly as she pushed some of her hair behind her ear.

She shook her head as she giggled and he took her hand, she held onto it to make sure she wasn’t going to go tumbling down onto him! Which wouldn’t be a bad thing in her mind, but not in the bookstore!

“Noooo! That’s like the worst nickname ever! That’s not cute!” She said with another giggle that got even louder as he snorted. Even that was cute! “I’ll have to make up a terrible nickname for you then!” She wheezed out as she swiped at the tears coming down her face. First Icky and now Cheeselyn? Gah!!

She tried to calm down a little bit as he started to talk about his dad and she listened enraptured to his story. “Oh wow, that’s so cool though, having a hidden dad, I mean.. it would have been stressful, but Professor Wayland seems like he’d be so nice about that sort of thing! ” She said with an encouraging smile.

“Well, I’m glad you got his height! How was traveling over the summer with him and Professor Kennedy? Are they cute? They seem like they’d be cute together. ” She said with a grin.
Gosh...was he just realizing how pretty Iclyn was or had he been dead ever since he met her? Like....Merlin....she was so beautiful.

Sebastian grinned, biting his lower lip. "You're welcome." He said gently. This was the first time he had been actually happy in months. Of course he had had a great time with Tristan and Kalen...but...there was something about Iclyn that just lit him up inside.

He chuckled at her protests, a tingle going up the hand that held hers, and said, "Fine...no Cheeselyn. You definitely need a better nickname than that. You are too pretty to be called cheese." He said with a grin before sticking out his tongue. "What about...well you have Ice and Icy already...hmmm...," he said rubbing his chin, "...I may have to think about this for a while." This would be an interesting.

Sebastian listened as she spoke about his situation and it was actually really interesting but...it also had really bothered him as a child. Not knowing who is father was had really taken a toll on him, but his step-father was a great man and he had really taken care of him. "Yeah...it was," he paused looking down, "difficult to say the least. Not knowing who my father was and that I was missing a whole other part of myself and family, but he is definitely a great man and has been amazing throughout this process. I think he is really happy to have a child of his own." He looked up with a shy smile at that last bit.

"Oh, Merlin, me too. My mum is so short!" He said with a chuckle, before giving her a huge grin with that next set of questions. "They are actually sickeningly cute but it's so nice to see them so happy. I felt like they were so unhappy their last term." But that was a topic for another time. "OH and you should see Professor Kennedy's massive manor. It's amazing." His eyes enlarged as he spoke. It really was impressive.

Ever since that book had first appeared and disappeared from the front doorstep of the shop, Elizabeth had felt the need to reach a new level of perfection, both with the bookshop and even at home. To the annoyance of those who were there, but it could have been said that the house hadn’t been nearly as messy lately as it had been, between two twelve-year-old girls, guys and any number of pets running around. Flourish and Blotts had gone through a bit of a change as well, and the petite blonde shopkeeper had continued reorganizing even as the summer rush had begun.

Even to the point of books flying over the two teens challenging the Monster Book of Monsters, the others having various discussions in the stacks and nearly colliding with the cats as they tried to treat the same books as playthings. Thankfully avoiding the father and daughter who had just entered. Hogwarts subjects were not only arranged by subject, but alphabetically by the same now. The shopkeeper herself was ensconced halfway up a shelf in the mythology section with a duster between her teeth, her wand at work in her free hand as she tried to multitask.

Okay but that smile tho.. she hadn’t seen it too often lately, if at all since the disappearances and now she just wanted to keep it on his face, because he just looked right with a smile..

Smiling down at her.

Ohh Merlin here came the sparkles again!

Iclyn grinned softly as he spoke, and she kept her hand in his, no way was she letting go now! “Mmm, I am much to pretty to be cheese! ” She said in a teasing voice as she grinned at him, though a slight blush was beginning to stain her upper cheeks even as she spoke confidently! She titled her head, her bluish grey eyes on him as he tried to figure out a name for her. She had a few that popped into her mind, but they were all endearments that perhaps shouldn’t be used by friends.

Whoops?

“I’m going to call you Bastian. I think it fits you well. ” She knew Kam called him Bast, so she didn’t want to take that name, and Seb didn’t fit him. Yes! Her Bastian.

Well not hers..

She squeezed his hand as he spoke about it being difficult, she couldn’t even imagine not knowing her father.. though at the moment she’d give almost anything to have her father back with her right now. “I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been, I’m so glad you can finally know who he is and have a relationship with him now though.” And Professor Wayland too! He had legit been one of her favorites.

She grinned as he started to speak and she giggled and nearly happy clapped as he said they were cute! “I’m so glad! Yeah I barely saw them speak to each other last term they were here, I was wondering if something happened. ” Her eyes went wide.. “Really? Is it one of those huge houses in the country? ” She asked as she looked at him.

Alright, the boy looked sufficiently embarrassed for not knowing how certain dangerous books work. And he had patiently held her personal reader with him, so she figured she could let him off the hook.

"You're welcome," she chirped as he handed her back her volume. An idea had just popped in her head, and she figured it wouldn't hurt to ask him. "I wouldn't have known about The Monster Book of Monsters either if I hadn't just read about it in here." She tapped the cover of Now That's What I Call Hogwarts! so that he could read its title. "I'm the only wizard in my family so far, and we don't have books that bite and move." Even the pictures didn't move, except on the TV of course. She was testing the waters and hoping the boy was Muggleborn, like her. Then she wouldn't feel so alone at Hogwarts next year.

Sebastian was trying really hard to focus on figuring out a good nickname for her but...all he could think about was how pretty she was. So when she spoke, it shook him out of his stupor, and he grinned wider. "That you are. It's completely distracting how pretty you are." He said with a chuckle, trying hard not to blush.

Bastian, huh? It worked. Reminded him of that super ancient movie...what was it called...OH! The Neverending Story! He grinned at the thought, saying, "I like that." It did kinda fit. "I am still going to have to think on yours though...might have to give me a couple days." He said with a chuckle, his thumb rubbing a gentle circle in the back of her hand, though he hadn't realized he was doing it.

The Hufflepuff gave her a small smile, and gave her hand a gentle squeeze back. "It was very difficult, but it has been great getting to know him. I am so glad too...you have no idea what its like to wondering who that other half of you is. But I am finding so many new similarities between us every time I see him." He looked down at the floor with an absentminded grin thinking about the major factor of Chai Tea.

"Oh, something happened alright but that is a conversation for another time." He said with a grin. "But they are engaged now and planning the wedding. I am to be Tristan's best man." He said with a huge smile. "Oh, yeah..country manor. Massive. I'm pretty sure it's the biggest I have seen at least." He said with a chuckle.

His eye caught on the clock on the wall. He was supposed to meet his mother fifteen minutes ago. "Ah, bloody hell...," he said with a sigh, "...I was supposed to meet my mum. Good company always makes you lose track of time." He said with a wink and a huge grin. "See you on the train....I mean...the carriage?" He rolled his eyes and gave her a goofy grin.

And suddenly just as they had come, the sparkles left, as soon as Bastian said he had to leave, Iclyn felt as cold as her name.

“Oh no, I’m so sorry to have kept you.” She said in a soft voice as she folded her arms a bit and ran a hand through her hair, part of her wanted to ask him.. something anything to get him to stay or to be able to see him soon.

Just ask him out! Her mind screamed at her, but her mouth had other ideas.

“I hope your mom won’t be to mad. ” She said softly as she retreated into her self again, “I’ll see you on the carriage. ” She said with a wave.

Just ask him out! Her mind screamed at her, but her mouth had other ideas.

“I hope your mom won’t be to mad. ” She said softly as she retreated into her self again, “I’ll see you on the carriage. ” She said with a wave.

Sebastian gave a big smile and a wink, "Eh, don't worry. She'll understand when I tell her I got side tracked talking to you." His mom would also probably make him do a thousand chores until he left for school...but he wouldn't tell Iclyn that.

He noticed how quickly she became closed off, which saddened him, but he hope it wouldn't last long. "Save me a seat, would you?" He said with a dazzling smile that could melt the sun.

"Bye."Sebastian said gaving her a wave as he ran quickly out of the store...completely forgetting and not caring about that potions book he was supposed to grab because a pretty face was swimming in his brain.

Now he couldn't wait for the new term!

Freyr entered to Flourish and Blotts with a hurry because he loved books. He loved them so much that by the time he was 5 he could read. Since then he read almost whatever he could. Including many Muggle "classics" like Hemingway, Dickens, Tolstoy, Hugo. As he grew up, he started to like philosophy, too. It was actually what fired his desire to learn where magic comes from. Then he shook his head and looked at the shopping list he made for himself. The list included the books requested by the school and the ones he wanted. So he started to gather them in a pile. When he approached the clerk, he had
The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk
A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
An Anthology of Eighteenth Century Charms
A Compendium of Common Curses and Their Counter-Actions
Confronting the Faceless
Magik Moste Evile
The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts
The Dark Arts Outsmarted
Practical Defensive Magic and Its Use Against the Dark Arts
A Intermediate Transfiguration
Guide to Advance Transfiguration
Theories of Transubstantial Transfiguration at his hand. He couldn't see where he was going but after avoiding a family, he managed to reach the counter and asked how all of that cost.

It was a somewhat distracted shopkeeper who had made her way over to the counter when she’d noticed a young boy approaching it with a stack of books that nearly seemed taller than he was. Above all, it made Elizabeth worry that it would fall and cause even more of a mess than she was already convinced the shop was. There was definitely going to be a deep cleaning that happened once the shop was closed for the night.

She’d reached a hand out to steady the stack as she greeted the boy with a smile, her usual words interrupted by his question. “Hmm,” she said instead, green eyes moving down the stack and mentally trying to calculate the cost. Her eyes had narrowed as she’d taken in a few of the ones lower on the stack, too. “Are some of these for your parents, or an older sibling?,” she asked, gently. Namely, the dark magic titles as she questioned selling them to so young a boy. Not to mention an eleven year old likely didn’t need the advanced transfiguration titles, but then it might have just been an innocent thing.

Either way, he’d asked for the cost. “It looks like it’s all going to add up to 55 galleons 15 sickles.” It was a lot, but there were a lot of books in the stack.
