Default Flourish and Blotts

About halfway down the north side of the Alley stands Flourish and Blotts, the shop noticeable by its wide picture windows displaying all sorts of gold-embossed spellbooks, any new releases warranting advertisement and the occasional sleeping cat, as the shopkeeper’s two cats occasionally decide to make the window display their chosen napping place when they aren’t underfoot. Upon entry, all that seems to be visible are bookshelves, stacked to the ceiling and absolutely filled with books of all shapes and sizes. While it may look like chaos, there is a sort of order to the shelves and various stacks of books scattered throughout the main floor in addition to those shelved. A table sits close to the door which regularly holds sets of Hogwarts’ required textbooks every summer for the ease of students who may not want to hunt them down on their own, and a staircase, even more shelves filling the space underneath, leads up to a second floor that contains shelves of the various works of fiction from the Wizarding world and beyond.

Near the center of the shop stands the counter, where the shopkeeper can usually be found and which is also the location for the occasional book-signing or other book-related event. Surrounding the counter are displays of newspapers, magazines, diaries, journals and other small items that might interest the literary-minded customer. In addition, a large, leather-bound book rests on a small stand to the left of the counter: an index of all the books sold in the shop for the use of the customers who are in a hurry or simply don’t want to search through all the shelves on their own.

Toward the back of the shop, a door leading to a storage area and the small office used for paperwork and any other business the shopkeeper needs to take care of in private, a cat-door installed as well as the cats’ food and water while they’re in shop are there. Tucked away in various corners of the shop, half hidden by shelves and very cozy, are small reading nooks containing squashy chairs and small tables for a lamp, and a larger reading area including a fireplace can be found near one of the front windows. Enjoy!

"L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore can

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you"

Robyn Holmes (Zoe) & Julie Bellaire (nicole black)
A Date With a Book:
Meet your date outside Diagon Alley's premiere bookstore, Flourish and Blotts then head inside together: a little 'reserved' sign marks out the nook set aside for your date. The table is small and quaint and possess a lamp that provides cozy lighting - bright enough to read by but not enough to glare. There is also a cookie platter with a range of sweet treats, and a pair of mugs which are charmed to refill with the hot beverage of your choice. The squashy chairs sure do look inviting: take a seat and get the conversation going, there's plenty of inspiration around you for topics after all. Once you've gotten to know each other a little, thanks to Flourish and Blotts, you may each pick out (and keep!) a book for your date.

Julie Bellaire had not signed up for this. no, quite literally she had not signed up for this. Her friends, sweet as they were, had misguidedly signed her up for this dating service in the hopes of 'getting her back out there'. now, there was nothing wrong with match making or blind dates, or dating in general but Julie... really didn't believe dating was for her anymore (or ever).

but Robyn Holmes didn't know anything about this, Robyn Holmes was probably lovely and didn't deserve to be stood up.

So, here she was. well-dressed, slightly stressed and fairly worried she'd be the one stood up.

Robyn was ... indifferent. While she could do nothing but assume that her alleged date was a somewhat decent person, the WU student and Witch Weekly intern wasn't exactly thrilled that those at her workplace had signed her up for this. Valentine's Day in her honest opinion, which she had been quite vocal about as of late, was one of the most ridiculous holidays of the year, and the concept of blind dates and love at first sight and Cupid's arrow were just as ridiculous.

A lone wolf is what she was, which was just fine with her. Yet there she was walking down the alley, arguably sheer curiosity getting the better of her than anything. There was a glimmer of, dare she admit it, hope that this random pairing might just work out for the better. Not to mention she'd have an experience to write about regardless of how things turned out in the end.

Wearing a sensible dress and heels, Robyn made her way toward Flourish and Blotts. Her eyes locked on what she presumed to be her date, considering no one else happened to be waiting around. "I take it you must be Julie Bellaire?" she asked once she was within arm-length.

Julie didn't want to be here. She had known that but now? as she was about to introduce herself to the sensibly dressed woman in front of her it all came crashing down around her ears.

Nevertheless, she persevered. "I very much am." Julie replied, her smile bright and warm as she extended her hand to shake. She could, and she would do this, and she'd have a good time no matter how much her body rebelled against her. Big deal. Big deal she hadn't been on a date since Jessa. Big Deal her last relationship (for lack of a better word) had been with a boy just toying around with her. Big Deal. She was Julie Bellaire and that still very much meant something. Tossing her curls over her shoulder, she peered up at Florean's with a near perfect look of her usual playfulness. "Looks like we get the whole store to ourselves. Should be nice."

Once the confirmation was given, Robyn nodded her head. A smile grew on her face, though internally she was torn -- half of her wanted her date to be a no-show so she could move on with her life on the course it was already on without interruption, yet the other half oddly was allowing herself to go with the flow. It is a funny thing what a dash of curiosity and hope could do to a person like her.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Julie," she responded, returning the hand shake. "I'm Robyn, as you already know." A woman of formalities is what she was. She wasn't about to let all of her adoptive mother's etiquette lessons go to waste after all these years.

When her date's eyes wandered to the storefront, so did hers. Reading over the sign overheard, never in a million years would Robyn Holmes have thought she would ever be partaking in a date inside a bookstore. In her mind she had started a list of better places for a date, but Julie's voice soon brought her back into reality.

They had the store to themselves? Should be nice? Right. "Shall we go in then?" she asked, already turning the doorknob and stepping aside to allow Julie to enter the shop first.

Nina Castillo quietly slipped past the doors of the shop, keeping her head down as she scurried within. While she didn't mind running into some of her classmates, there were others she was very adamant about avoiding. But even more so, she was adamant about avoiding every possible familiar face within the confines of these particular walls. As far as anyone was concerned she was a student here to buy books for school and not for her own pleasure.

Which was why she was searching the bookshelves to find the history section. For.... School. And NOT for personal reasons.

Though, she was slightly lost. Perhaps she ought to ask for some assistance?

This place was his favorite spot in Diagon Alley. Every summer, the lanky fifteen year-old always spend his time being here for getting some textbooks or just reading some interesting things. Even though he's currently being occupied with his summer job but still... Keenan always made time to be here.

Just like today.

He was currently sitting at the corner of the bookstore, with A Troll Guide to Surviving the Muggle World on his hand. Actually he didn't really need to read this since his family pretty much adapting very well to muggle lifestyle and he's been fascinating with muggle science fiction films like Star Wars. But somehow... Keenan picked this book and found it interesting. This was probably written for those uptight purebloods who still refused to accept some muggle things in their life. This chapter about vending machine was amusing for him.

He's totally in the zone and did not even realize his surroundings, mainly the presence of his schoolmates.

With her head down, Nina Castillo continued to make her way further and further into the shop. She still wasn't sure where the history books were kept, but hadn't seen the shopkeeper yet. Perhaps because she was slightly preoccupied with the titles her eyes were skimming over, or the stealth she was trying to move around with. Either way, the task before her was considerably difficult. How did one go unnoticed, whilst looking for something in an unfamiliar place?

Finding herself cornered, the young girl sighed. She knew she ought to ask. And fortunately, one of the store's employees was sat nearby.

"Excusez mo--" her French slipped out naturally, eyes growing three times their size when she realized that she hadn't found an employee (though, maybe he did work here???), but had stumbled upon one of her schoolmates. "... Keenan!? What are you doing here?!" She took a few steps back, deer in headlights. And why did he look so COMFORTABLE and as if he owned the place and it was absolutely his fault that she mistook him for an employee. Why would he do that!? It's like he was trying to embarrass her!!!

Hehehe.

Keenan occasionally let out a chuckle while reading this book. This was hilarious and also well-written. Fortunately he didn't really have problem with vending machines before and thought some of the tricks that were written in this book weren't that helpful and he found shaking the machine worked better than all of these tricks. Ah, silly pureblood wizard.

Noticing someone was about to ask him something, the Ravenclaw put the book down and realized that it was none other than.... Nina Castillo. Oh, Merlin. He must've been cursed or something that he had to meet this girl again. Groans. "Oh, that's you." He spoke in his usual neutral tone. What was he doing here? "I'm reading a book." He answered showing A Trolls Guide to Surviving Muggle World on his hand. Adjusting his glasses, he asked the girl same question. "What are you doing here?"

Um. Geez. Okay. The light in Nina's eyes dimmed slightly at his reaction. He could've at least pretended not to be as disappointed as he was. Averting her eyes for a moment, the Slytherin contemplated turning on her heels and leaving right then and there. But that would be rather immature, and Nina Castillo was many things, but immature was not one of those things. For the record.

Holding her head slightly higher than usual (which was already pretty high), she took a moment to glance at the book in his hand. "Trolls... How... Riveting," though nothing in her voice indicated 'riveting' was the adjective she meant to use.

But again, she froze. Deer in headlights.

What was she doing here??? Um. Well.

"Not reading!" she pipped up quickly, almost teetering on urgent. Who was hiding something? Not Nina Castillo, that's who. "I'm... Here for school supplies." Yes.... School supplies. Because Flourish and Botts supplied books for the fourth year curriculum....

How... Riveting.

His smile had turned into a smirk when she said that. It's not that everyday people used that word in daily conversation and mostly they preferred interesting or appealing. Okay, that's enough of vocabulary lessons of today. What he really meant was, a girl like Nina Castillo who often acted like she's not that smart but in most cases she didn't bother showing the intelligence and... oh, remember when she's hiding a history book inside that trashy witch magazine? Yup. This wasn't his first time seeing a girl who pretended into something she's not and he just... did not understand.

Girls, huh.

Not reading and looking for school supplies, those were her answer. Keenan just nodded and said "Okay." Like he always used to be, even though it annoyed her. Was he doing that on purpose? Probably. The Ravenclaw went back reading his book before asking her. "Have you found any?" Looks like she hadn't.

Mary beamed as she entered the bookstore. She was only in Diagon Alley for the quidditch world cup, but Martha wanted her to get done of her schoolbooks as well. She had agreed that she could get a few books of her choice as well as her books for next year. Her fingers ran over the spines of the books as she contemplated how many "a few" really meant.

She first picked out her schoolbooks: The Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky by Jason Lisle, The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2 by Miranda Goshawk, The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore, A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch, and Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger.

Now for the fun part. She searched through the shelves, looking for any titles that seemed particularly enticing. Eventually, finding nothing particularly interesting, she went up to the counter and asked, "Do you have any astronomy books?"

Martha followed Mary into the store, trailing closely behind, but trying not to interfere too much. Mary seemed to want a little more space than she really liked, but she was going to protect her anyway. Her sister was not very good in social situations.

She watched as Mary looked over the titles and moved approvingly when she picked out her schoolbooks. Seeing Mary approach the counter, she moved over and placed her hand on her shoulder, to symbolize that she was the guardian in custody of Mary.

She hated when he wore that look on his face, almost as much as she hated it when he replied to a question with 'okay'. Or replied to anything with the word 'okay,' as he seemed to do that quite often. He was absolutely insufferable, entirely infuriating, AND YET she couldn't get him out of her mind because the more he ignored her, the more she WANTED his attention and admiration.

What was wrong with him?!?! She had GREAT legs and a PRETTY FACE and she a CUTE personality and she'd even call him smart and laugh at his jokes, if he wanted. WHY COULDN'T HE JUST TELL HER SHE WAS PRETTY???????

He was SUCH an idiot.

Boys, huh.

Her look of annoyance was only further pronounced when her mouth began to mold into a frown. 'Okay'. Of COURSE. Did he KNOW any other words? Was HE the one in need of a vocabulary lesson? Fortunately, he redeemed himself. Sort of. It was a question, at least. And it composed of more than just one word and it did not involve 'okay'. Improvement. "... No, I... Don't really know my way around here..."

Help me? And tell me I'm pretty? *nina eyes emoji*

At least now she would not bug him with some personal questions that annoy him to death and made him 200% uncomfortable. That was a good thing, yeah? Okay. Sometimes he just understand this girl, or girls in general. They often acted vague and confusing and not to mention most times they're pretentious. Well, except Missa and Lany.

Lany? Huh. He was slightly mad at that particular blonde girl.

Adjusting his glasses, the Ravenclaw gave her a look. "You can go to counter and ask Miss Chambers that you needed Hogwarts textbook for 4th year. After that you pay for the books and voila, there you got them all." Did he just tell Nina how to purchase the books? Yeah, that's what she needed right? You're welcome. Now he could go back to read his troll book... Well, this troll guide of muggle life book, peacefully.

Annoying personal questions? She could totally do that too, if he wanted. What made him think she wouldn't?

....................

Nina FROWNED.

If she had wanted the store clerk to aid her, she would've gone up to her in the first place. She was helpless, not stupid. "Oh," was her chosen reply, laced with disappointment that could clearly be seen in her eyes. "I was kind of hoping that... you could show me around, Keenan?" she tried again, this time making a point to give him a small smile... Inching forward and walking two of her fingers up his shoulder.

Please. Help.

"You're really smart and... probably come here all the time..."

PLEASE. HELP. ME. I'm pretty. And nice. And helpless. And innocent. And don't know this store at all!

Also, tell me I'm pretty???

Well, he did no wrong. She didn't directly ask his help or something, and Keenan Elliot Burton had given the best (and easiest) solution. Why? Because neither of them would wander around looking for all those books and they're just waiting at the counter while the shopkeeper would probably wave her wand to prepare the book. Easy as a cauldron cake. Although personally he didn't mind getting all the books by himself, not sure about the spoiled girl here.

The Ravenclaw saw nothing on her face. Did he mention how he's bad reading someone's expression?

He perked up when Nina finally mentioned about she wanted him to show her around the bookstore. Alright then, that's all he needed to hear. This boy here was no mind reader. She also didn't need to throw some compliments (although those what she said was true and Keenan wished he had muggle cellphone for recording that.)"Okay." Putting down the book, he stood up from his seating and offered his hand.

Keenan Burton really ought to spend less time with his comic books and more time with other human beings because his people skills were absolutely abysmal. In Nina's opinion, anyway. And for the record, SHE!!! WAS!!! NOT!!! SPOILED!!! Maybe he'd know that if he would actually TALK to her. Was Nina upset? Yes. Clearly. Though he probably didn't notice that either. Ugh, figures.

She was about to give him another sassy retort, but quickly stopped herself when he stood up and offered his hand..... What? That's it? THAT'S all it took????????

The Slytherin stared at Keenan's hand for a moment, as if analyzing whether or not this was one big joke. But finally, she reached for it with her own because she was far too helpless to care if it was one. Nina Castillo was not used to asking for exactly what she wanted because most boys knew how to take hints. However, it seemed as if some needed more help than others. And now that she knew, this wouldn't be an issue any more. Eeee!

And she knew the thrown compliments weren't exactly necessary. But boys liked their egos fluffed, right? And she didn't mind doing the fluffing. As long as she was occasionally fluffed back. "Thank you," a smile. Finally.

Sighs.

Yes, Keenan Elliot Burton was not a people person and he admit how he didn't have a good social skill. Dealing with people (especially girls) and socializing took too much effort, and he would rather to solve puzzles and riddles. But let's not fully blamed him for this incident because Nina didn't even ask him nicely at the first place. Huft. Was she really that proud to ask for help? Who on earth did she think she was? Princess Leia? Heck, even Princess Leia was one of the stronger female character in pop culture industry and had become a feminist and heroine icon.

And NOT all boys knew to take hints because they're not mind readers smh. "Next time just ask, it won't hurt your pride." The Ravenclaw spoke up. This girl probably had Cinderella complex or something. Maybe next time he should give her that book as a gentle slap on her face, or now if he could find that book around here. "What book do you need?" Usually the shopkeeper kept the Hogwarts textbooks at the tables close to the door, unless Nina didn't see that so probably she's willing to get other books too.

The shop was, maybe not literally, surprisingly busy given the World Cup events happening. Yes, there had been the expected run on Quidditch literature given the sale Elizabeth had decided to put on them due to the events, but aside from that she hadn’t expected much more than the usual traffic in the shop. Thankfully, she only had the cats underfoot as the twins were off with friends instead of Bella invading like the newly eleven-year-old usually did. She loved her children, but sometimes she wondered if they could have been better behaved.

Either way, she had found herself mingling, having small conversations with customers when she came across them and keeping an eye on the boy ensconced in a corner with one of the Muggle studies books. Not that she hadn’t seen him before, as she knew she had. She did remember her regulars, even if most of them were simply students looking for their textbooks before the new term. That and it had provided her with the ability to keep an ear on the discussions the girl had joined him, while she made her way back toward the counter and the reference tome displayed there as usual.

In time to join the two girls who had approached, and she’d given them both a smile as the younger of the two had spoken. “Of course. We have an entire section of astronomy books,” she began, taking a moment to remind herself exactly where that had been located last. She did occasionally have to shuffle the displays around, and that didn’t include the occasional magical tome that decided to relocate itself on its own. “Did you look over near the History section? If you like, I can keep the books you’ve already collected up here while you look.”

Even as she stood at the counter, Mary's eyes were scanning the shelves of of titles. Reading titles was half the reason she loved bookstores. She could hear some chatter in the background, particularly a boy and girl talking to each other on the other side of the room.

Feeling Martha's hand on her shoulder, Mary was annoyed with her, but didn't want to make a scene in this store, especially knowing her social skills. She kept quiet, sending a small glare to Martha. She would argue outside. She had never really been the type to argue, but her sister was an exception today.

"Thank you!" she said, feeling Martha flinch. "Yes, I'd like that." She hands her bag of schoolbooks to the shopkeeper. With that, her sisters hand is gently brushed away and she makes her way over to where she found her history of magic book. Seeing a familiar cover, she makes her way over to a nearby shelf. This must be the section.

Martha watched Mary's interaction with the shopkeeper carefully, looking for any signs of trouble. Her answers had been typically awkward, but for the most part, everything was fine. She wished she didn't have to do this, but the mere thought of what her mother must be going through right now was enough to keep her going for the rest of the week. To have your youngest child, the only one still in your care, just randomly stolen from you...

She should have expected it. Mary had brushed her hand away. "Hey! Why did you do that?" she asked, in as quiet a manner as she could. She was just trying to protect her, but she was so... independent. Maybe that was a good thing for any functioning adult, but she wasn't quite ready for Mary to be an adult. And neither was Mary.

Analiese walked into the bookshop and started looking for the books she needed. She decided to start with the first one. The girl read the first book on the list. It was The Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky by Jason Lisle. That would be in the astronomy section, right? Slowly but carefully, Analiese searched for the book. Luckily, it didn't take long, since astronomy was the fourth section in Flourish and Blotts. After a while, she found the necessary book. Now the second book, which was... Analiese took the list out of her pocket again and read the name of the second book. The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk. Charms? The 11-year-old looked for the charms section. This seemed to take quite long. But Analiese didn't mind, she enjoyed being surrounded by books.

Any reason to leave the house was all Skeet Octavian Sayse needed. So when his mum told them they would be going to Diagon Alley for the day, he had taken a bath, worn his clothes, eaten his breakfast, and brushed his teeth about five times faster than usual. The house was getting pretty boring with just his brother, Sawyer, to talk to. Sawyer kept going on and on about how he got higher grades than Skeet did, but did Skeet care? Yes. Not at all!

Making the excuse that he would go supplies shopping, Skeet ran Naruto-style into Flourish and Blotts. He didn't really have the intention of buying his books already. He was here for the comics and the cool books which, in Skeet's dictionary, were picture or pop-up books. Weaving through the book shelves, he tried to avoid people and obstacles along his way. "Excuuuuuuuse me!" the Gryffindor said, passing by a girl around his age.

........Who was reading on Charms?! Look, it was fun being able to wave a wand and all but reading about it? No no no no no. Absolutely not.

Analiese looked up and saw a boy about her age looking right at her. "Hello?", she said. Analiese picked the book she needed and stood up. The boy was still staring at her. "Do you mind... not staring at me?", she asked him. She checked her supply list again and checked what the next book was. It was The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble. That would be Defence Against the Dark Arts. Analiese put the list back in her pocket and looked up. The boy was still staring at her. "You can stop staring at me now. I'm Analiese, by the way.", she said. Analiese held her hand out, meaning to shake the boy's hand. She smiled.

That would be Defence Against the Dark Arts. Analiese put the list back in her pocket and looked up. The boy was still staring at her. "You can stop staring at me now. I'm Analiese, by the way.", she said. Analiese held her hand out, meaning to shake the boy's hand. She smiled.
Staring?

Okay but let's be real. Skeet? Staring? It was more likely than you think. He definitely wasn't! The accusation and the rudeness here were too high. The Gryffindor gave the girl a sassy look. "I wasn't staring at you," he pointed out oh so helpfully. Because why would he? He didn't come into the shop to stare at people. And he would never even if she was a girl and girls were supposed to be pretty. He was staring at the book she was holding. Boring.

Now where were the comics?

Oh, wait, now she was talking to him and introducing herself to him. Wow, Merlin, girls were rather confusing. Did all girls meet up and collectively agree to be confusing? "I was never staring at you, FYI." Girls. SMH. And he would have faced the other way to continue to the comics section but he could hear his dad's omnipresent voice in his head, lecturing him about being nice to girls. "M'name is Skeet." He momentarily looked at her hand before obliging to shake it briefly. Too much interaction. "Why are you reading about Charms?" He had opinions.

"I was looking for my textbooks, not reading.", Analiese explained. She moved over to the next bookshelf and saw that it was Defence Against the Dark Arts. Perfect. What book did she need again? Oh right, it was It was The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble. She started looking for it. Facing the bookshelf, she said,"Nice to meet you, Skeet. And no, girls don't meet up and collectively agree to being confusing." She turned around and saw that Skeet was confused. "I can read minds, you see. Sometimes, at least.", Analiese told him, whilst bending down and getting the textbook. "What year are you in?", she asked curiously, and stood back up.
