Technology Lounge

There are all sorts of funky little Muggle machines and doodads tucked into the lounge, including a cappuccino machine, a microwave, and a vending machine that stays magically refilled. The vending machine, along with the rundown jukebox in the corner, only take Muggle coins, so you best bring a supply if you want a snack or a song.

The chairs in this lounge are rather comfortable and cushy, probably to make up for the frustrating nature of the appliances. The lights are dim and the jukebox often provides random and ancient songs free of charge. It's quite a nice place to spend your breaks, really.

To Anyone

Break time.

Which for Ash, meant that it was time to stretch her legs and take a little stroll around the Ministry. And, since she was still new to the place, it doubled as time to familiarize herself to the layout of the massive building.
Today seemed like a good one to explore the upper levels.

Astara made her way off of the lift, and proceeded down the hallway. Having been somewhat familiar with the Magical Law Enforcement department, she kept going down the hall for once, passing by the Magical Accidents & Catastrophes office and then came across something interesting.

"Muggle Technology Centre..." She spoke to no one in particular as Ash read the template on the door. This could be interesting. And so Astara entered the room.

Ash was no foreigner to muggle gadgets, but it was always of interest to see some items which were considered 'relics' nowadays. The jukebox in the corner caught her attention immediately.
"Haven't seen one of these since great-grandmother was alive." Ash said aloud as she walked straight towards the jukebox. "Wonder if you work..." She reached inside the small clutch inside her work robes and took out a few muggle coins.
Ash scanned the song selection, and turned the knob located on top to flip the ancient pages.
Finally after a few moments of skimming through the music choices, she picked one entitled "California Dreamin' " By The Mamas & the Papas.

As the song started, Ash found herself swaying slightly to the tune, and glanced around the room again. Yes. This would be a rather nice spot to wind down if her day ever became too stressful. And with a contented smile, Astara popped a couple coins into the vending machine as well for a treat and made herself a cappuccino to boot, before plopping herself down in one of the cushy corner seats and enjoyed what was left of her break.

Today was just one of those crummy days in the life of Amidala Barlow. She'd been having a splitting headache since before her had started for the day, there was really no rhyme or reason for it. As her break time came around she headed to the tech lounge to wash down to analgesics with water and take a moments rest. Having been able to use Muggle electronics in there she set the alarm on her phome for a fifteen minute power nap.

The room was very therapeutic in a way, the lights weren't too bright and music coming from the jukebox was at pleasant volume. Wooooow. Finding a seat for herself Ami sank into it and rested her head on the palm of her hand, with her elbow supporting the weight. Slowly the red head closed her eyes and drifted to sleep in hopes that the storm in her head will subside when she wakes.

Part II

And for his next act.... honestly, Fletcher could take a nap already. It was very early in the workday and yet, he felt like he'd been up all night. Maybe he had been up all night though. Maybe he was now the employee who was keeping odd hours at the Ministry (and at home), working himself to death for Charles' sake.

Well. More about that later. Funny how he kept ruminating on that stupid conversation with angry Draper last year, back when he should have paid the man more attention.... But he didn't have time to dwell on his regrets. For now, he sank into a couch in the Muggle technology center and tipped his head back, closing his eyes for a moment as he waited for someone to get his memo. And come get him.

He wasn't sleeping; he was just practicing extended blinking for the moment, alright?

"SIR I'M HERE!" He cried as he CRASHED into the room. He didn't realize it, but the technology lounge would quite an awkward place to fire someone. Regardless, his brain expected the worst. "What did I do wrong, sir?" he asked, clutching his chest from running so fast. He couldn't BREATHE.

LOTS OF PANTING.

The Muggle Technology Lounge would, indeed, be a weird place to fire someone, especially since it was steps away from Fletcher's actual, far more professional office.

He jolted awake upright at the shout from Scottie, a small snort escaping his nose like he'd just been dozing. He hadn't been, of COURSE, but he still rubbed at the corner of his eye, flicking a bit of mucus out with one of his fingernails. Right, he was here for Scott.

"Uhhh, well," Fletcher straightened up, stretching his arm out on the couch beside him. He did his best to put on his sternest expression, the one he had to use with Dunk when he brought snails, or fairie eggs, or something he thought was a dragon egg, etc. into his room. "Have a seat, Scott, and let's talk about that."

He waited for a longggggggg, tense moment to see if Scott would sit, and then added, "Have you talked to Goldwasser about me lately?"

Scottie was so worried about himself that he didn't notice the older man had been snoozing. His heart was still pounding. His hands were SHAKING. His brain was going three thousand lightyears a MINUTE. He sat, his legs suddenly noodley. Were his legs always this noodley? Had he been hit with a jelly-leg hex? Was that a hex? Was his brain making things up now? "Sir, please! What did I do - " He stopped mid-sentence as Fletchy went on.

don't tell Fletchy we call him that, all right???? Scottie would be mortified

"No," he answered immediately. "Not at all, sir. I .... don't often speak with my department head. He's a busy man," he gave a firm nod as he truly took note of Fletcher for the first time. The man's eyes were more tired than usual. Had he gotten any sleep the night prior? Scottie wondered what this could possibly be leading up to? "Why?"

Scottie wouldn't have been able to notice that Fletcher was snoozing, though, because he HADN'T been snoozing.

He'd been resting his eyes. Big difference there.

"Well," Fletcher drawled, slowly turning said tired eyes on Scottie, "maybe you should."

He waited another beat, enjoying this all too much, and then tapped his fingers on the back of the couch lightly. "Relax, Ferguson, you're not in trouble. Not being fired. I actually need your help, okay? So take a breath." He cracked a grin at the young security officer and elaborated a tiny amount. "Before I go on, in all seriousness, promise me that you burned that memo before you came here."

He liked Scottie and all but he had a feeling there should be little to no paper trail between them. He COULD have used different paper and all, but... seeing Scottie's reaction told him that the kid cared. And THAT was exactly why he'd called on him.

!!!!

He wasn't being fired!

What happened to him hating his job?! Oh ho ho ho! Clearly he cared somewhat for it if he had been just! THAT! WORRIED! about it! But he was too filled with relief currently to think too deeply about that - he would do his deep thinking later trying to fall asleep avoiding existential dread! The kneazle made things better, though. Nando was a good cuddle bug at night. The kitten was just the comfort buddy he needed lately.

But before he could think more about his newest addition to the family (and to be honest one of the main reasons he enjoyed arriving home every day lately) he listened veeeeeery carefully to Fletcher. Merlin, this was more serious than job security...his Wes!senses were tingling.

"My help. okay. Taking a deep breath, sir!" he saluted him (why?? he did not know????) and took an increeeeedibly deep breath before nodding. "What memo, sir?" he tilted his head to the side, obviously hoping Fletcher caught his drift.

He really hoped he wasnt about to be asked to murder someone. Scottie wasn't the murdering type, you see? It was wrong! And he didn't know Fletcher well enough to be willing to hide a body or anything - that was reserved for only one person in Scottie's life. Hopefully Logan would never mess up that badly.

The salute almost made Fletcher laugh out loud; he would have, too, had he not been so bone-tired. Plus this was a rather serious matter, so he didn't want to go giving Scottie (could he call him that yet?) the wrong idea.

Ah, good. It was destroyed then. Fletcher's smile made his eyes crinkle at the corners but he didn't address it further. Done. They were in business now. No, he had a perfectly capable former assistant he could ask to hide bodies for him. Scottie was... needed for something that required more skill than digging graves and destroying evidence.

"Right." The senior undersecretary crossed his legs, getting comfortable for the moment, and dropped his volume a little. "Back to what I said about Goldwasser. He is a busy man. He's been digging into personnel files all over the Ministry, mine included. It's an absolute violation of the Ministry's privacy and human resources practices." Fletcher shook his head. "But there's nothing you can do about that. You can, however, offer to help him."

He waited to see if Scottie would catch his drift....

kayquilz 01-16-2021 04:44 AM

O____o

Scottie's stomach did a nervous flip as the conversation continued. Stealth was not his strong suit, and neither was being sneaky about anything! And if he trusted Goldwasser, this would surely feel a lot different than it did right now. It almost felt like...Fletcher was the good guy. The one he trusted. And Goldwasser was sooooo not. But the man was his boss! And had he really done anything deserving of these feelings from Scottie?!

He couldn't shake it, though. The man was, and to Scottie had always been, off. "I can do what you need." He had not answered right away, but he hadn't taken very long to think either. "Help him? Help him? In what way? And why?" his voice had lowered, too. And he couldn't help his eyes averting to the door of the technology lounge every so often.

They should have code names. Scottie already had one for Goldwasser. Ponyboy. Yep. PB for short, he supposed.

BanaBatGirl 01-16-2021 04:57 AM

Good, good. Good boy, Scott. Fletcher liked him, did he know that? He approved of him, even if (so far) the younger man had a more rigid view of 'law and order' and 'right and wrong' and other silly phrases Fletcher had never paid much attention to.

"That's up to you," he murmured in reply, keeping things vague while he stuck one hand in the pocket of his blazer, rooting around for something. "It would be best if you could get close to him, but if not.... just keep your eyes and ears open. Keep yourself safe, first and foremost. Don't do anything rash because we'll be needing you later, in one piece, preferably...."

He trailed off as his hand closed around what he'd been looking for, and he pulled it out of his pocket. "Check this out. New lapel pins for everyone, coming soon to a Ministry near you." Fletcher opened his hand, offering the shiny metallic pin to Scott in his palm, the Ministry logo sparkling in the light of the technology lounge.

kayquilz 01-16-2021 04:53 PM

Scottie didn't want to help anyone do anything shady. The thought of it was enough to make him shift uncomfortably in his seat, but at the sight of the pin, Scottie took it, reading the latin to himself. "Ignorance of the law excuses not." He murmured, frowning. "Is that our new motto? Why? We all follow the laws here...we're government employees..." he seemed confused.

The feeling in the pit of his stomach was beginning to bubble over. It was a bad feeling. A bad feeling he couldn't explain. His thoughts raced to his father, wondering what he would have to say about any of this. "I don't know if you've met me, but I am not a rash man," he said gently. "Am I to keep this, or should I give it back to you?" he held up the pin. "So...I should be chummy with Goldwasser and offer to do anything he needs me to do without seeming suspicious," he ran a hand through his hair nervously.

There was a slight pause before Scottie continued, "You know something I don't know." The pin, Goldwasser's rummaging through people's files...and Fletchy's behavior? "It's fine. I don't need to know. But my security job is about to get more interesting, I'm afraid," he shook his head as he thought about it. "In NOT a good way. That's the vibes I'm getting from you...sir."

BanaBatGirl 01-17-2021 02:40 AM

Fletcher's nostrils flared slightly as the young man read the Latin on the pin and translated it, but did not take it. Merlin, was he thick? "I thought you were sharper than that, Scott," he almost snapped, his hand twitching. He kept it palm-up, though, as he waited for the DMLER to take the pin. "It's... for you. To wear. Here. At work." Did he get it now? Fletcher wasn't so sure, juding from the boy's next question. "Seriously? It's a special pin, just for you."

How much more obvious could Fletcher be?! He was suddenly doubting his ability to recruit people; he should have left this to Conley, he knew he should have. Noooo, I'll do it, he mentally cursed himself. The Glitterpuff is good with people. Yeah, right.

Fletcher brought his intense brown eyes up to stare straight into Scott's without blinking. "Correct, IF that's possible. You're young and ambitious, are you not? If you're not up to the task, just tell me now." So he could find someone else. Seriously, they needed eyes on Level Two. If the eyes weren't going to belong to Ferguson, then he needed to find someone else ASAP. A lot was at stake here, which Scottie would know if he had been paying attention.

He looked around, just once, to be sure no one was nearby. "You're correct with those assumptions, kid, okay? I can't say much more." And? Fletcher suddenly felt an urgency to check his watch. "I don't have the time. But listen, you do this for me, for... the right reasons, and I promise you won't regret it." Scott wanted to be on the right side of history, didn't he? "You'll find out more when the time comes. Just think of yourself as ahead of the curve."

So, could he take the pin now, or....?

kayquilz 01-17-2021 03:24 AM

Scottie thought of himself as a very smart guy. So he was confused by his own confusion the more Fletcher spoke.

WHAT WAS HAPPENING?!

.....

"Oh oh. Oh." He looked down at the pin again. "So...this is...for me. And for...others like me. Or eventually...anyone else like me. That you need favors from." He was trying to be vague but also get his point across. Scottie had thought Fletcher was trying to warn him that the pins were soon to come with Bain Goldwasser heading some major new policies, but he was sure Fletcher was getting at a secret...group. Wearing these pins???? The good guys. The good ones.

Right?

Without hesitation, Scottie pinned it to his shirt collar peeking out through his robes. "I'm up for it, sir. I am." He saluted again. "I will do my best not to disappoint you!" He looked down at the pin glistening there. "But won't I seem suspicious just waltzing around with this weird pin?"

BanaBatGirl 01-17-2021 03:34 AM

...there we go, alright, finally, the boy was catching on.

Fletcher moved his hand away to tug at his sleeve and impatiently check his watch. "Yes." He looked up again. "I hope there will be others like you... and me. People who actually care about the Ministry and want to keep things...." How to put this? He gestured lazily with his wrist. "...sane."

Alright, he really had to be going. He nodded as Scottie pinned it on, hesitating slightly at his last question. "We're going to be handing more of them out at the next orientation, but not all will be... activated. So don't lose this one. And don't," he would have thought this went without saying, but alas, "call undue attention to it. Alright?"

Fletcher stood up, intent on leaving before Scottie started attracting attention their way ALREADY. "You sure you're up for this?"

kayquilz 01-17-2021 04:24 AM

There was a feeling, a nuanced one, arising within him as he listened to Fletchy speak. "I care about the ministry...more than you know, sir," he looked down at the pin as he spoke. "My father would never forgive me if I let anything bad happen here." For the good of the country, for the good of wizarding folks everywhere, he felt the swelling importance of it all.

Not activated yet.

All right.

Scottie could do this. He nodded. He knew where he was headed first thing tomorrow. Going today might seem suspicious. He pursed his lips as he looked up at Fletcher once more. "I am ready, sir. I am. I'm up for this." Who was he? How was he feeling THIS brave? Yesterday he could hardly look Bain Goldwasser in the eye, yet right now he felt as if he could march into the man's office and proclaim loyalty to him?! And wanting to HELP him?!

He could do this.

He could.

BanaBatGirl 01-17-2021 04:30 AM

Brilliant. Fletcher felt a bit deflated now, relieved that he'd gotten this out of the way. Plus... he did think, he did hope he could count on Scott Ferguson, now and when they really would need all hands on deck. "I know," he nodded slowly, putting a comforting hand on Scott's shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze, a gesture he'd definitely picked up from Charles.

He just wasn't as good at it as the Minister, though, so he quickly let go and took a few steps toward the exit. "Just... remember, this," he pointed directly at the lapel pin, then to himself, then back to Scott, "stays between us for now. Alright? Mum's the word."

kayquilz 01-17-2021 04:53 AM

The touch was comforting to Scottie, even if it didn't last as long as the older man thought it should have. Any longer, and Scottie might have wanted to shimmy his hand away.

OK.

OKOKOKOK.

Scottie thought of Logan, his twin, and nodded. He would so badly want to tell him. Funnily enough, just two and a half? three? years ago, he was content not to speak to Logan at all. But ever since they had moved in together, he and Logan shared everything with each other. He couldn't imagine NOT sharing something with him. Would Logan be able to notice a difference in him? Probably not since Logan was kiiiiind of self absorbed. "Mum, then," he replied.

He gestured at the door to let Fletchy know HE should exit first.

BanaBatGirl 01-17-2021 05:18 AM

Fletcher's eyes wrinkled at the corners as he smiled genuinely at Scott. "Till we meet again," he intoned mysteriously, allowing himself to enjoy this for just a moment as he made his exit.

So, who was next on the list?

Bain Goldwasser 03-21-2021 03:42 AM

He had always hated this place. How many times had he passed by this area of the Ministry and wondered why it hadn't been removed or remodeled? The only reason he hadn't blasted the place to smithereens was because he had orders to follow. Despite what people thought of him, Bain did indeed care about he safety and security of the Ministry. This job, this position, this work...it had been the final culmination of 194 years of plotting and planning. Of working for the Greater Good. Oh how disappointed Grindelwald would be of him!! Perhaps it was a good thing his mentor and friend wasn't around to see this.

Somewhere, deep down, Bain had sensed that things had been going too well. One didn't live to be 254 years old without developing some sort of sixth sense. He had felt, more then heard the blast on Level 1 while he was out doing his Security rounds. Something had gone wrong. His fellow Alliance members were fleeing, or would be fleeing if they knew what was best for them. No, their hold here had been stretched too thin. And now it was literally going to go up in smoke. He was twirling his wand between his long fingers as he stepped into the room.

He pointed his wand at the jukebox in the corner. "Bombarda."

The Announcer 03-21-2021 03:51 AM

BOOM!

The jukebox exploded in a spray of shrapnel, fire, and loud musical noises that likely shook a good portion of the 1st and 2nd floors of the Ministry (if not more). Like a spark to try tinder other parts of the room quickly erupted in flames.

Those very comfy chairs? Poof! They lit up like fireworks on the 5th of November.

As the Department Head watched, flames quickly made their way towards the microwave. Better hurry to leave. That looks like a bomb waiting to explode.

lazykitty 03-21-2021 09:17 AM

Having heard the Minister's message, Ronan was on his way out of the MLE on the second floor when a big explosion rocked almost literally the floor. Honestly, he considered continuing on his way to Hogwarts to join the fight there. But something told him that this was something to investigate. So, he made his way up to the first level, where the sound seemed to have come from. From there, it was easy to follow the smell and sight of smoke to the technology lounge. Where Goldwasser was standing in a flaming room. The auror considered just leaving him there and letting the whole thing burn, but that would mean that the rest of the Ministry could possibly join it. And he was pretty sure that there were still people here, settling last-minute things before going off to Hogwarts. He couldn't allow others to be hurt.

He cast a wordless Aguamenti, first in the direction of the flames racing towards the microwave, then the jukebox.

Hey Ju 03-21-2021 10:43 AM

Much like Ronan, Matt had been getting ready to head to Hogwarts himself, when he heard the explosion on Level 1. The Ministry had clearly gotten tangled in the same issue Hogwarts had, so Matt believed it might be in as much trouble as the school. Heck, the entire Wizarding world probably was.

So that was that, he was changing routes at least for the moment. It wasn't like his boss - oh, the irony - was the one who had told him to immediately go to Hogwarts anyway.

Speaking of the man, Matt wasn't really surprised to see him in the burning room when he rushed in. He quickly assessed the scene, his wand firmly in his grip, and since Ronan was taking care of the spreading fire, his attention turned back to his boss. His wand at the ready and his name-tag indicating he was half-blood still on show.

"Hey, boss." His tone almost scornful, Matt stared the man right in the eyes, wand pointed at him. Done exploding things or..?

Uncle Moose 03-21-2021 01:41 PM

Saul is here now after the Big Boom Noise. Heard down from Level 2.

Okay look. Maybe there wasn't a real big plan here. Saul got the signal from his pin figured that was a call to action and all he gathered from the info he was given was Bain Goldwasser had the largest target on his back. After No response in the DMLE Saul took a moment to gain some composure and rethink his strategy.

Unfortunately time to think was rudely interrupted.

A loud explosion came from the floor above and shook the floor he was on. With that Saul took off for level one. Whatever was going on was probably connected to why his pin went off. With luck Bain would be there. Other's would begin to converge on the location as well. People may need help up there.

Saul got himself to the scene of the explosion and took everything in quickly. Matt was here, and there was Ronan too. More importantly there was Bain standing amidst the fire in the technology lounge. Confused mightily with Ronan having believed the man was aligned with Bain since the Gala.

He kept his wand trained on the Department Head while Ronan worked on the flames. "Been looking for you Goldwasser." the IUMO Chief Inspector said sternly. "How about you step out of the room before you get a bad burn." Does he even burn?
