Default Muggle Studies Lesson 2: #can #we #build #it

It's the time-slot before lunch and you are very hungry.... FoR kNoWlEdGe!!! Hopefully. Because your class is very far from the dining chamber today. Just another wrench thrown into things, but no matter! Your Professor won't let this wrench throw you for a loop. The less-than-ideal grassy surrounding behind the castle is actually the FIFTH best place to host this lesson! Don't fret, your Professor has secured the surrounding area with ample heating charms. Once you enter the boundaries, you'll be warm and snuggly.

Anyway (anyway, anyway).

As you make your way to the clearing you will notice a few (or more dependent upon your attention span) things. First thing. Professor Schmoe (sans Rubik's cube, avec fidget spinner) is standing around letting you know that you can sit or stand around until class begins. Second thing. Boxes. Lots and lots of BIG cardboard boxes, presumably filled with THINGS and STUFF. Third thing. The toolboxes by your Professor's feet. There were lots of them. Fourth thing. Nah, there isn't a fourth thing. Just hang tight.

OOC: whaddup, ya dashing ducks!? welcome to our second MS lesson of the year (ooc), but ic like somethingteenth lesson of the year. please take a look at the classroom rules while you're here. i'll post in about 20ish hours to officially start the lesson.

Class has OFFICIALLY BEGUN. Please post as if you've been here the whole time.

Lesson Progress:
+ QUESTION ONE: How do muggles know how to assemble their furniture? (& arrivals)
+ MINI-ACTIVITY: Unboxing the furniture!
+ QUESTION TWO: What are some strategies you may take into consideration when putting together the furniture?
+ MAIN ACTIVITY: We're building things.

Uh… why was Schmoe smiling at the ground? Tina blinked confusedly but otherwise didn’t pay it much attention. The important thing was that her answer had been correct. She half-listened to her classmates’ answers but turned her full attention back to the professor as he spoke again. Blink, blink. Assembling furniture an art form? Well, hand-crafted furniture certainly, but otherwise that was debatable. She wasn’t sure whether to laugh or roll her eyes at Schmoe’s puns. They seemed… a bit much, but Tina would much rather have a professor who made corny puns than one who snapped at students for trying to be kind. Looking at you, Giselle Desmarais.

Assemble into groups? Yeah, no… Tina wasn’t doing that. She attended classes for one reason and one reason only: to earn points. She couldn’t have other people slowing her down and jeopardizing her chances of completing the task, thus jeopardizing her good grade. Besides, human interaction involved too much uncertainty for her tastes! Nope, she was flying solo for this one!

Tina closely examined the boxes, looking for a piece of furniture that wouldn’t be too large or complicated to assemble on her own. She eventually found a smaller box, which according to the picture on the side contained an end table. That seemed fairly straightforward. With her piece of furniture chosen, Tina went to the front to retrieve a pair of scissors from the toolbox and returned to her box as quickly as possible. If somebody had “claimed” her end table while she was gone, she was going to be so mad! Nope? Okay, good!

Tina scrutinized her box from all angles to find the most efficient way to open it. She made a couple of decisive cuts through the tape hanging over the sides of the box. One more long cut sliced the tape across the top of the box, and the flaps fell open. She peered inside. There was an instruction manual, a large flat piece that must be the top of the table, another smaller flat piece that was probably a shelf, four legs, a bag of screws, nails, and other small pieces, and - what’s this? There were more pieces that Tina hadn’t anticipated - two long narrow flat ones, a short narrow flat one, a wider short flat one, and long wide flat one. Oh, okay. Tina saw where this was going. This must be one of those end tables with a drawer.

She neatly arranged the pieces on the ground beside her. The pieces for the table top and shelf were in one pile; the legs in another, and the pieces for the drawer in a third. When she’d finished organizing the bigger pieces, she placed the instructions and the bag of screws and nails on top of the table top piece where they would be easy to spot. She wasn’t going to even try to open that bag until she started building, lest she lose any of the small pieces. After one final check of the box to make sure there were no more pieces inside, Tina turned her attention back to Professor Schmoe, awaiting further instructions.

So it was a good thing she did not say anything.

"So w----FUDGESTICKS, PHEOBE! Watch it with those, will you?" Eiji scolded with an almost paternal tone rather than one of pure irritation, catching the first year's glomp attack out of the corner of his eyes just in time to avoid himself being STABBED by the pointy end of those scissors. Gryffindors. Honestly. "Can I trust you not to slice your finger off if I let you open the box?"

He was sure that Auntie Vivian would not take lightly to severed fingers.

But he was skeptical, so he turned to Trinetta for some preemptive strategic planning.

"Once the box is open, we should lay everything down in front of us so we can see what we are working with."
If Phoebe had voiced any of those thoughts about ~adult~ emotions aloud, Nettie would have probably embarrassed herself stammering about how she had a BOYFRIEND now so Phoebe was toooootally off base with her thoughts. Just saying. Totally TOTALLY off. Also Eiji had Missa so why would he want to spend private time with her?? So good thing that didn't happen, because she was having fun and actually starting to look forward to this as she watched the rest of the class get in to the activity and didn't need awkwardness ruining that. The prefect was completely unaware, thank Merlin.

And it was also a good thing that Nettie didn't have to explain her thoughts about Eiji as well. Her thoughts about him not liking muggle building projects was simply due to the fact that this was a DESK and didn't seem like something particularly thrilling to build, but then again, you could brew potions on desks. It was functional. Maybe this was right up his alley, actually. So Nettie had dodged yet another embarrassing babbling conversation with him, thank goodness for her. She had been working on making less of a fool of herself for the most part lately and she wanted to keep it up.

Nettie grinned at Phoebe as she enthusiastically joined their group, nodding at the young lion. "Sounds good!" she said with a smile chuckle, grinning at her enthusiasm until - GURL PUT DOWN THE SCISSORS! Nettie did NOT want to have to deal with a stabbed student - that was a scenario that she had envisioned in her WORST prefect nightmares and she was not keen to see it become reality, especially to her friend. She smiled softly at Eiji giving her a little scolding, really impressed with his tone and how patient he had been - considering almost being stabbed.

"Remember to cut AWAY from yourself," she reminded Phoebe gently, since she seemed to need a refresher on scissor etiquette. "And that sounds like a good plan. Maybe we can build it in pieces? One of us focus on the cabinet bit, the other two focus on the big base? Something like that? We can decide once it's all laid out..." she added, twisting her lips in thought as she examined the picture on the side of the box. She had...never put together any sort of furniture before. That was what her Papa was for. Yet she'd WATCHED him do it a lot and had a vague idea of how the pieces would be set up.

Phoebe scowled playfully at both of them, since they seemed to think she was four and not twelve. TWELVE, OKAY? She'd had a birthday. "I know how to use scissors. Sometimes I even cut my own hair." She'd only done that one time, actually, and her mum had charmed all the scissors to shock Phoebe for a year afterward. But they didn't need to know that.

She stabbed the box and hacked the end off in jagged pieces. Not the right way but certainly A way to do it. "Ooooor we can just dump it all on the floor and shove bits together until sometime looks right." She reached for the box to dump it out.

Excellent! The groups were forming quite naturally, and it looked like most were well into their unboxing tasks. Finneas was very pleased with what he was seeing and hearing, though he did feel slightly nervous about the confidence Phoebe had with those scissors in her hands. But ANYWAY (x3).

It looked like most had finished taking their slabs of wood (and the like) out of the boxes, so Schmoe walked over to center stage grass to let them know they could begin assembly... But oh! What was that? He ~~~~tuned~~~ into the nearby conversations, hearing some preliminary planning. It was very encouraging.

"I'm hearing some greeeeaaaat conversations and planning," he beamed awkwardly, his arms hanging by his sides. "And on that note, it'd be a great to bounce some of these ideas off of one another before we begin. What are some strategies you may take into consideration when putting together the furniture?"

Because really, most of them had been sharing with their groups anyway. Might as well share with the WHOLE class before they begin. Y'know? YEAH. Great.

OOC: Hiiihiiii I promise they'll get to building right after this last question! You have 24 hours for this question!
_____As always, catch up on the Mini-Activity is welcome too! Go teaaaam!!!!!

"Pay close attention to the instructions..." which was really a no brainer, but you never knew. Some people liked to just dive into things head first. "Oh, and be careful with the tools." Okay, it wasn't really a strategy as much as a warning. But dropping a hammer on your toe or smashing a finger didn't really sound like a good time. At all.

Gingerly picking up the scissors, she snipped the bag open and dumped the little things out on the floor with a clink.

She stared blankly at the materials, unsure of where to begin. "Aren't there supposed to be instructions in here?" she asked, shaking the box upside down. A packet of paper floated out, landing on top of the wood. "Oh! There it is." Flipping through the papers, she raised an eyebrow. There were only pictures in here. No words. Avalon peered at the first step, trying to decipher the illustrations. "So I think we need to put the frame of the table together first, and then attach the legs last. Does anyone know what tool we need for the screws?" She rummaged through the toolbox, pulling out some odd-looking contraptions. "Maybe this one?" she asked, holding up a pointy metal thing.

Right.

Instructions.

Claudine had forgotten about those until Avalon mentioned them. She nodded, smiling a little. She was not about to admit aloud that she had forgotten but she could admit she was pleased that there was at least a slip of paper that was found. “Alright, if that’s what it says. Let’s just get this over with quickly.’’ As for the tools… the Snakette knew nothing about them but she looked from the pointy thing to the screws. “I see a groove in the screws and that thing you’re holding has a flat point so maybe it’s used to tighten the screws?’’ There was now a giant frown on her face.

“Know the muggle tools before attempting to use them,’’ Claudine stated to Schmoe, her hand up briefly before it was lowered and she was once again frowning at Avalon and Fiona. “That rectangle bit is definitely the top so what else needs assembling with that?’’

Claudine was hopeless at this subject given the fact that she was a pureblood.

Tina looked at the piles of furniture parts in front of her. She was tempted to take a peek at the instructions while she waited for the class to move on. She'd already organized everything into neat piles; she didn't want to disturb them and risk losing anything. Besides, Schmoe was talking again anyway.

She turned her attention to the professor, listening intently. Strategy for building furniture? Well, she couldn't speak for the rest of the class, but her strategy was going to be follow the instructions to the letter. Unsurprisingly, that was the first thing her classmates said. She'd have to think of something else. Hmm… if she wasn't such a stickler for instructions, what would she do?

Tina looked at her furniture pieces again as she considered the question, hoping that would jog her mind. Her dark eyes fell on the pile of smaller wood pieces that made up the drawer, and suddenly it came to her! Her hand went up, and she said, "Some people might like to start small - do the simplest tasks first then work up to the harder ones." Did that make sense? She hoped it did, but just in case, she offered an example. "Like this end table, for instance. One could start building the drawer first, then set it aside and work on the table."

You are five, Phoebe. Five. He was generous and not considering you four or three. And yes, he remembered her and the whole cutting hair phase. He remembered it vividly. And he had to swallow back a gasp when he saw her approach to opening the box. Eiji was the sort to painstakingly open wrapped gifts so that the tape didn't tear any bits off and then fold it into a neat square to be used again later - never wasting.

Phoebe was trying to turn their box into cardboard pâté and it was making his skin crawl.

".....or we can lay all the pieces neatly out on the floor so we can see what we are working with," he repeated firmly. "Vote is two to one, Phoebe." And this was a democracy right now since the odds were in his favor. "But I promise you can try to fit pieces together first."

Eiji was already in the zone, so much so that he was paying absolutely no attention to Professor S'more or his question. One that he had, technically, already answered. Instead Eiji began pulling things out from the box and then out of the plastic wrapping that these sorts of shops insisted on putting everything in. So much waste.

Flattening the plastic pieces down and laying them in a neat stack, the fifth year spent the next few moments lining up the wooden pieces in perfect straight parallel rows.

Instruction manual? No thanks. He didn't need it.

Oh Merlin. Phoebe was going to break half the pieces inside at this rate! Nettie let out a sigh of relief however when Phoebe got the box open, and the damage seemed to have been contained to the outside of the box. She watched Eiji lay out the pieces, and while he was doing that, she looked around for an instruction manual. HE may not need it, but Nettie was not taking any chances.

Once she picked it up from the pile and set it aside, she raised her hand to answer Schmoe's question. "Teamwork. You can have one person in the group work on one end of the part of the project, while another person does the other bit. Then you can put them together!"

Eiji was so transparent. Phoebe was gonna have to tell Becky all about this, and they'd giggle over it. She dropped the scissors onto a nearby desktop and crouched beside Eiji and Nettie on the floor. If he wanted to be all weird and precise about it, Phoebe wasn't going to fuss at him, but she WAS going to read the instructions just to annoy him.

"Oh, they're in Swedish. I speak Swedish! It says 'put the box on your head and give the youngest person in your group a galleon.' Wow, weird."

Strategies.

Uhhhh.

Honestly, Kaiser was sure there probably were strategies to employ when going about this sort of thing, but right now, all the information his brain was providing was to 'just follow the instructions and put it together'. And he wasn't going to say that.

"Just follow the instructions and put it together." Oh, look at that, apparently he was going to say it after all. Kaiser lowered the hand that he had, at some point, apparently raised in order to answer the question, and looked at the pile of stuff on the ground in front of him. Instructions...

... Still in the box? He reached a hand deep inside and started feeling around for the missing paper.

What did she think? "You're speedy." That and other things. Cecelia was ALWAYS thinking a lot. "Also I LOVE that chair! It's so cool! Bet it'll look AWESOME when we're finished!" She was REAL confident about it, she was.

Holding out her hand for the scissors, the first year waited to be given them before going AT the box to get it open. She was by NO means being gentle, but she was definitely getting the job done and quickly. When she'd finished cutting the top open, she gave the box a bit of a nudge and it fell to the side, letting all the pieces cascade onto the ground by their feet. OOPS!

Heh...

"Guess this means we're ready to start?" Uh...HE could have the instructions, even! She picked them up and handed them over to him, a smile on her face. HERE!

Speedy? Speedy wasn’t something people called him. Shy? Yes. Quiet? Always. But speedy?

He considered this and gave her a small smile. Was he speedy? Not really. He wasn’t the athletic one in the family. But he did end up smiling wider when she said she liked the chair he’d picked out. "Glad you do! I figured it would look fun for the room we had in mind. Can’t have boring chairs, right?" It was basically LOGIC.

When she held out her hand, Lucas didn’t hesitate in handing the pair of scissors over. It was just opening a box, right? There was nothing he needed to worry about here, he was completely sure about that. That was, until the first year started hacking away at the box as if it had said something mean to her. Should he...... should he be worried? Still no, right?

What he didn’t expect? The box to topple over and send everything spreading outwards. There were a lot of items here? More than he could’ve expected. Nuts and bolts of all shapes and sizes. And pipes that looked more alike than he would’ve liked. This did NOT do anything for the uncomfortable feeling he was getting from this lesson. No no no!

When Cece spoke, he first glanced up at her and then took the instruction booklet from her. "I guess it does. This can’t be that hard, right?" He started flipping though the booklet and..........

.......... yeah. No. No way.

Before he could do more than just STARE at the booklet, Schmoe started talking again and he gladly looked up at the man. But as much as he was trying to listen to him speak, his mind kept wandering back to the booklet and the tiny diagrams he’d seen on it. They were supposed to help, right? Then why did they only make him feel weirder?

Right. Schmoe.

What was he asking about, again? Strategies? Was internal screaming a strategy? Or ignoring the problem until it went away? Both sounded like the better options to him. But they probably weren’t what Schmoe was looking for so, he found himself raising his hand in the air, only vaguely knowing what he wanted to say. "Planning. I guess you have to plan which pieces to start off with first. Or if you want to start with, uh, the main framework first? And then build from there? Orrrrrr......" Was there another option? "Just plan first."

YES. Her first point was a good one, but the SECOND point was something he wanted to make sure EVERYONE understood. "Did everyone hear that????" He looked around nervously. "Careful with the tools!" Surely sending children to the hospital wing would be a bad look for him. And also for Trent, who was already mere seconds from imploding entirely. Poor man.

"Excellent point," he nodded. "We discussed some of the tools you may find in your toolboxes a few lessons ago," but he knew better than to assume that anyone had payed any real attention. It was a real epidemic in schools. "If you don't know what it does or how to use it, best to ask than to assume." Errrrrrrrrr. Yes. No such thing as an unintelligent question. It was part of the classroom rules. Even if they didn't exactly have a classroom to work with today. Y'know. Mobile classroom. That's what this was.

Tina was always one to offer up thoughtful answers, he liked that very much. "Ultimately up to preference, but if you're feeling lost, starting small and working your way up does provide an excellent initial step." He gave her an awkward sort of smile, letting his arms just dangle around. As they do.

SPOILER!!: Eiji

Most everything surprised Schmoe. Except for Eiji not answering questions. This never surprised Schmoe. It used to be concerning, but now that the boy loved muggle studies... Finneas was appeased. He offered the Slytherin an uncomfy smile anyway. He looked very eager to start. SOON, M'BOY. SOON.

SPOILER!!: Trinetta

Once she picked it up from the pile and set it aside, she raised her hand to answer Schmoe's question. "Teamwork. You can have one person in the group work on one end of the part of the project, while another person does the other bit. Then you can put them together!"

"Precisely, Trinetta," he gave her a large, uncomfortable-looking grin. "Use each other's strengths and skills to your advantage." Her team, in particular, was one of the ones he was worried about. Noah fence.

"Oh, they're in Swedish. I speak Swedish! It says 'put the box on your head and give the youngest person in your group a galleon.' Wow, weird."

Yes. Very worried. But there wasn't any need to interfere. Sometimes the best lessons come from the biggest disasters. He looked over at Phoebe for a moment, before turning his attention to a raised hand.

He reached a hand deep inside and started feeling around for the missing paper.

.............. "Weeeeeeeell," he.... wasn't... wrong? "Yes, very good." Uh. Finneas blinked a few times, searching for more words to supplement his response. But like young Kaiser, he, too, was drawing a blank.

Finneas GRINNED at Lucas. So uncomfy. So much force behind the smile. So much. Yes. Good answer. "Planning will be your friend today!" he looked at a spot just past the boy's left ear.

Finneas blinked a couple times more than necessary as he scanned the area for more raised hands. Fortunately for everyone, there weren't any and it was almost time to get started. For real this time. "Let's keep these strategies in mind, and remember that safety comes first!" A L W A Y S. But especially when it came to his salary and favorite job. "There won't be a need for any big powertools today, but I'd advise the older students to take charge of tasks involving hammers." Hammers could be a safety concern.

And also, also, "the instruction manuals will have diagrams and drawings if you do not remember how to identify the bits and pieces," a reminder was always nice. ERrrrreerrrrrrrrrrr. He bobbed his head awkwardly for a moment. Why were they staring at him? Why was he staring at a blank space between Phoebe and Eiji's heads. Why-- Oh yes! "You may begin assembly! I will be walking around if you're errr in need of assistance."

And some of the groups would need more than most, he was sure.

"Remember, the purpose of this activity is to gain perspective on how MUGGLES build their furniture. So, errr, no magic! I will be checking!!!" He added this in as an afterthought.

OOC: Look at that! Look how far we've come! You have at least 60 hours for the main activity. Which is furniture assembly. If you forgot. How dare you. Jk. AnYwAy. Chaos is encouraged. Please do not chop off your toe. That is not encouraged. Schmoe and I are around, holler (title your post or PM/VM lol) if you need us, but I'll be reading your posts regardless. Whoop dee doop. Let's have some FUN.

...was Trinetta talking to him? He was so focusing on lining things up and already trying to visualize where and how pieces could fit together that he was oblivious to the classroom conversation going on. "Yeah...we could do that..." says somewhat absently as he pushes a few screws into a neat row over some bits he assumed would make up the drawers.

He sighed a bit as he pushed himself up off his hands and knees to survey the collection from above. This was a VERY ambitious project, so many pieces. Best Muggle Studies lesson ever. But don't let the coy smirk on the fifth year's face give you too much hope, professor. This was a very finite interest on display at the moment. Phoebe did not speak a lick of Swedish and he was all business at the moment as he rolled his eyes in her direction, though he thankfully caught himself before speaking. "You missed this line though," he said as he leaned over and poked haphazardly and the paper she was looking at. "...unless the youngest in the group has a name that starts with the letter 'P', then they have to pay three galleons to whoever in the group has a name that starts with the letter 'E'."

And it would be wise for no one to bring up the fact that Eiji was actually his middle name.

He eyes the instructions up a bit. "We won't be needing those though, so you can just tuck those away."

And then he reached forward and grabbed two large wooden planks and held them up and together by their longer sides. "These clearly make the corner...so one of you should screw these pieces together while I hold them steady."

SPOILER!!: we were here all along.
Jillian took another stare at the boxes after professor schmoe discussed more into what they will be doing for class. Obviously, assembling these furniture did not make her excited one bit but she is hoping that she'll at least get something not so complicated. Dragging her feet towards the boxes, it took her some time to pick one. Most of her classmates did the same, it was best to be thorough. Not really because it's a box lol

She then took out the scissors from the toolboxes to open the box. She went with the shelf and she is crossing her fingers that it is easy to build it. Of course the first thing she tried to find was the instructions... or the manual... Jillian doesn't have any clue on how to assemble this thing from scratch, like a muggle. Her expectations from herself is not the very best right now.

Now what?

Strategies...

That's the answer... and she needs that. That's the only way she will be able to assemble this shelf. Honestly with this kind of shelf-- or any furniture that has a 'base' it is always best to start from the bottom. Then it gets easier after that... hopefully... She's hoping.

Okay. Time to assemble. Not that she has any clue on how to do it exactly but she can try. Yes, trrrryyyy. Jillian pulls her scrunchy out of her pocket and tied her hair up into a clean ponytail. No bangs hehe. She stared at the shelf parts inside the box and then back at the instruction.

how do muggles do all of this work from scratch? The shelf looks simple and all but the pieces that she is seeing in the box is not at all.

She took the first four short tubes out assuming that these are the base to hold the entire weight of the shelf. She also took the flat thingy surface that will be the part of the base layer with those 4.

Now to let her brain work out the strategy of putting this first together and make it stick... without magic. Hmmmm... How.

Glancing around at the other students begging the assembly of their items he looked at the box. He was fairly certain that he would get this done quick, but always a possibility there would be no instruction manual in the box and he'd be out of luck.

Deep breath.

He grabbed the pieces and set them all out around him. Then he made sure he had all of the screws or nails needed for the assembly. He tried to make sure all of the pieces needed were there. He always hated when he was halfway through a project and suddenly couldn't find a screw or a nail that was needed to finish.

or worse.... left over pieces. Those were worse. He never knew if the thing would stay built or not.

Cecelia supposed Lucas's answer about planning was the BEST one she'd heard, so she nodded eagerly in agreement, flashing their professor a smile to show she was TOTES listening and participating and supporting her building mate over here, she was. She was also REALLY glad they were about to build, because she wanted to check out ALL the pieces that were spread out by their feet. Who KNEW they'd have SO many to work with?!

"Maybe we start by putting pieces that look the same together into piles?" She liked sorting, she was GOOD at that, so she started doing it, organizing their materials. "Does it say what pieces we need first in that booklet, Lucas?"

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine had paid attention to the tools lesson. Or at least, she thought she did because she couldn’t remember all their names. The thing that Avalon was a screwdriver… was it not? Maybe they should refer to their notes or better yet, ask Schmoe for a demonstration. Too bad he was busy carrying on the lesson right now but she wouldn’t rule out asking him a little later.

Especially now that they were actually going to get things done. And especially since their group did not have an older student. Second years weren’t much older than first years, after all.

It was back to the task at hand. Claudine eyed her partners. “Let’s get this done.’’ She was starting to feel a little impatient because… what was the utter need to learn this? She moved to take some nails and a hammer with a yellow handle. Then she was studying the instructions Avalon had found. Luckily, there were images printed on them.

“I think it shouldn’t be too hard to put the top together.’’ Claudine hoped this would encourage Avalon and Fiona to help her get this over with.

The Snakette set to work.

Schmoe would be checking? How would he check if they'd use magic to manually build furniture? Did Finite work on this sort of thing? Also, what spells would actually be helpful for this? Kaiser couldn't think of a single one. There wasn't exactly an 'assemble furniture according to these instructions' spell, was there?

... Or, if there was, that was... actually kind of impressive. A lot of components would come into making a spell like that.

But Kaiser couldn't focus on that right now, because he was supposed to be building a bed. He had the instructions now, so there was that, but the lack of any actual words might be... a problem. Was he functioning well enough at the moment to follow directions that were entirely in picture form? Kaiser supposed he was about to find out.

So first he needed... uhh... what did he need? A flat ended screwdriver and a cross ended screwdriver. Once Kaiser had those, he continued looking through the instructions. From the next picture, it looked like he needed to find someone else to help him.

... No, no, he was sure he'd be fine on his own. Next, he needed to... get confused, and call IKEA. Or call IKEA once he was already confused. Not an option, so, moving on. He glossed over the final image on the page, as he could only assume it was telling him not to break anything.

The next page looked like a list of all the parts of the bed frame that weren't slabs of wood, and there were... many. Kaiser sighed in mild annoyance - he wanted to get building already - sat cross-legged on the floor, and started sorting through the bags of screws and other strange devices to make sure everything was there.

Yep, see. Careful with the tools.

Oh, they could get started now? Great. Daila picked up the instruction booklet for her bed......and was horrified to see it was all in a language she didn't even recognize, much less know a lick of. "Ah, dios mio," she mumbled to herself, flipping blankly through the thing. The pictures weren't exactly much help either, though they were better than nothing. But one would think that a company would translate the instructions for wherever they were selling, right?

She was just going to have to deal with using the pictures.

"Maybe we start by putting pieces that look the same together into piles?" She liked sorting, she was GOOD at that, so she started doing it, organizing their materials. "Does it say what pieces we need first in that booklet, Lucas?"

And now, it was time.

He was grateful for Cece's agreement. Really. He even gave her a smile at that but that did nothing for how he was feeling right now. Not when he was very much aware that he was supposed to be in charge and not look like he was scared when he really was.

And look! They were planning.

What pieces did they need first? Hm. Lucas flipped the booklet back to the first page, and started looking through the diagrams. Some were easy enough to understand but the first one? Uh??? "I think it's trying to tell us that we shouldn't be working on our own." Which they were already doing so. "They're also saying to call Ikea if we get confused."

........ yeaaaaah. No.

Shaking his head, he flipped the page and...... uhhh. "I think we need some nails. Eight, from the looks of it. A corner pipe?" What was that?! "A large sheet that has squares cut out in it, four pipes for the nails....... uh?? Another pipe, I guess?" Why not, right? "Two of the strappy...... straps." This was already going badly. "And then two of the side boards. They have a cross through them and fabric on it." Did she get all of that?

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine used her notes from the previous lessons, the tools and the guide that was the instructions as well as the help of her group members to get things done. It took time but the frame was slowly coming together. There were times when she was quite tempted to use magic, or rather, to try to use magic. Unfortunately for her she hadn’t learn that much in the way of putting things together with a spell.

The Snakette used the screwdriver and hammer to work on screws and nails. She hated the latter for she feared injuring herself. Sweat beaded across her forehead and this fueled the first year to hurry on even more.

She continued hammering away.

Avalon gathered a few more tools from the box, reading over the instructions once more. Maybe for a task like this it was better to just jump in and figure things out as you go. But for someone like Avalon, that wasn't the easiest way to think about things. At least Claudine seemed to know a little bit of what she was doing -- and she wasn't afraid of the tool.

"Good job with the top!" Avalon said, admiring the way that the tabletop was coming together. "I'll get started on the legs." She took a long piece of wood that matched the picture in the booklet. She picked up that weird screwdriver thing and worked on twisting the screw into the piece. Righty-tighty lefty-loosy, right? Peering at her handiwork, she noticed that while the screw was in place, the table leg was completely crooked. No, that just would not do. The young Ravenclaw took the screw out and started again, being sure to hold the table leg steady this time.

Phoebe slipped the instruction booklet into her pocket as she slid across the floor. Fine, fine, if Eiji wanted to be so bossy, than he could just converse pleasantly with himself. Or Nettie. Intended to be just as boring as most older kids and she wasn't having any of it.

Phoebe held onto the corners and sulked, but at least she was being quiet. Ish. "I think my Swedish is better than yours." She almost called him by his real name, but she wasn't mean. Just impetuous.
