Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1: #roomgoals

The time-slot right after lunch is never an ideal time to host a lesson, but with the castle’s rooms being double-booked at all times… Well, you work with what you can get. So that’s precisely what your professor is doing: working with it. And by it, I mean his Rubik’s cube.

Anyway. ANYWAY. AnYwAy.

The classroom is very special for your first Muggle Studies lesson of the year. Yes, it is true that the desks and chairs are all in rows facing the front of the room, as expected. BUT ((and there is always a but)) they aren't just any desks and chairs. They are all sorts of whacky chairs (beanbags! stools! benches! tall chairs! small chairs! red chairs! blue chairs! cushions for chairs! buckets for chairs! so ! many !! weird !!! chairs !!!!). And all sorts of whacky desks too, actually come to think of it… Everything about the decor is whacky today… From the fuzzy rugs to the big picture frames to the funky wallpaper…

Not-so-whacky, however, is Professor Schmoe, who could be found next to his own desk (a far more traditional piece) waiting to greet you as you find a place to sit. On the chalkboard there is a written request that you create a name-tent for yourself with the piece of paper left on your desk. Finneas even made one for himself as an example. Buckle up, kiddos! Let’s LEARN stuff today!

Claudine was very pleased with her list and had actually been doodling a small, stylish cupboard on one corner of the post-it. She was completely unaware Schmoe had snuck up behind her. When he spoke, she started a little, a soft squeak escaping her lips. MUST THE MAN DO THINGS LIKE THAT? Once she had somewhat regained her composure, she said stiffly, “Thank you.’’ Claudine scribbled the words in curly brackets next to the words sixth on her list.

She wondered if Schmoe had eaten something bad for his health during the lunch hour. Just look at him bumping into those tables. Anyway, it seemed they would be going a bit more in depth in the next week’s lesson but she already knew there had to be differences since witches and wizards didn’t even care for certain muggle things.

IKEA? The girl had definitely not heard of that until earlier in the lesson. The catalogue was pulled towards her and she stared down at it. A quick flick of it told her that it was full of pictures. This was a good thing as she wasn’t in the mood to do reading. At least the activity sounded easy enough but actually building the furniture? Not exciting. Still… that was a bridge to be crossed when they came to it.

As it was, this was another activity than could easily be handled so Claudine settled on the first page of the catalogue to begin her quest for kitchen furniture.

She smiled at Eiji when he offered her the list, and her smile blossomed into a grin at the professor's praise. Phoebe waggled her eyebrows wildly at Eiji, like ohhhhh did you hear thaaaaaat, but she wasn't giving up her chance at three additions to their list. Would he let her have that water slide? There was probably only so far she could push him.

Phoebe sat back a bit when the huuuuuge book was set in front of her, and she poked it tentatively with her finger. Was it a textbook? Full of furniture? Cooooool. Maybe she could come up with ideas for their study while looking at all the very pretty furniture. Only, it wasn't exactly up to Eiji's aesthetic, was it?

"What about this chair? It swivels! And it has wheels. And it looks just a little bit bouncy, right? So you loooook serious, but you're actually whimsical on the inside." That was kinda like her mum, although her whimsy was deep inside and mostly only her family got to see it. "I don't really like these desks. We need something vintage."

Oh, she had an idea! Phoebe added a few things to the end of their list.

Working on your own was incredibly boring. Also she didn't think she'd get ANYTHING done.

"ME!" Hello. The other girl looked familiar. Sort of. She'd definitely seen her around Hogwarts. Probably. "Hi. I'm Siobhán. What's your name? I think we should do a pantry. That's where the food is." Shivvy said all this loudly while walking over to the Ravenclaw, grinning all the while. Yes, good plan. "I'll get us that poster." And with that she turned right back around on her heels to head to the front of the classroom.

Hello Professor Schmoe. Hi.
Thank Merlin. Her offer to partner up with someone didn't go unanswered. That would have been embarrassing, especially given the fact that the professor had noticed. She wasn't thaaaat much of a loser....she just needed to work a little harder at socializing. That's all. Avalon smiled as the semi-familiar Gryffindor student approached her. "Hi Siobhán. I've definitely seen you around before, but I don't think we've officially met. I'm Avalon." She extended her hand to introduce herself. "And yes! The pantry sounds like a great idea." Food was always a good thing, after all.

"Alright, so we need to think of some items to go in there. And then find them in this......book?" Was it a book? It certainly was as thick as some books. Avalon thumbed through it, glancing at photos of strange, minimalistic Muggle furniture. "I can think of a few things so far, like shelves and lights so you can see what food you have. And maybe some boxes to put stuff in. Anything else to add?"

Fiona was a bit stunned when Professor Schmoe complimented her on her work. "Er, thanks, Professor Schmoe." When Schmoe placed the catalogue on her desk, Fiona began to casually flick through the pages with one hand, the other hand resting on her chin.

After a few moments, Fiona came upon a rather interesting looking item that seemed to combine the sink, taps, drawers and cabinets that she had written down on her list. She quickly circled the item and resumed her search.

Ah, perfect! Fiona had found a dining table and four chairs which was suitable for family meals and Fiona did think the colour of the item did suit her design. She circled the item and decided to look for a final item.

Fiona had found a beautiful picture that reminded her of her old home. It was a photo of New York City adorned with the word "Adventure" in pink neon lights. She circled that in a very large circle.

Yeah, he heard. And he was still trying not to like this professor on principle alone. Though that thought grew significantly harder to achieve when his want was actually rewarded and they were told that they WOULD be constructing things. Eventually.

But woah wait a second. They were going to actually get to order things? On the professor's galleon? That was what the man's words implied, which meant that this activity took on a drastically different role. Pity that he, honestly, dislike almost everything his eyes fell on as he gave the catalog a cursory look through. The chair Phoebe had suggested being the lessor of evils on the page of desk chairs. That was...until he found another option.

"I prefer this," he said nonchalantly while pointing to it. As far as desk chairs went. "....and this desk," he continued after some more flipping and pointing to the images. "...which I think I will have to compromise the L shape seeing as this place doesn't seem to accommodate for that taste." Unless they were allowed to customize things...in which case he was certainly attempting that during the construction period. "And this hanging light." Another point to another item on another page in the catalog. He continued to idly flip through the pages until he came upon something from her list. "Look, they have your globe too."

But when asked, he was going to push for the desk order - it was something actually useful to him and something he had been wanting to upgrade in his room back home for some time now. It would be the largest academic stretch among all the items and surely Professor S'more wouldn't deny him the opportunity for such hands on education. Surely. Eiji was already practicing making his case in his head for when the time came.

She had been embarrassed enough by the whole Amazon goof that she had stayed quiet the rest of class. Though, why she was so embarrassed, she couldn't put her finger on. It wasn't like she was expected to know all this stuff. That was why one went to class, to learn. Maybe it was the fact that she was in a new place? Let's go with that. Dalia had been paying attention, though, and taking good notes. Also, her list was made on the giant post-it thingy. And her ears were thankful that Professor Schmoe seemed to be done with the chalk.

Wait, what? They were going to be putting these things together? Wasn't Ikea furniture notorious for being hard to put together? Uh..she wasn't quite sure about this. Still, she did look through the catalog. They sure had some weird names for their things. Hmm....the Besta/Eket contraption looked interesting. So did the Tidafors. Plus, surely a sofa would come already in one piece, right? Right. And the Vittsjoe. That was her third, she was done! Okay, she might have picked, like, one more than asked. Oh well.

They have fun in their own ways, even if those ways are different. Wonder what video games are like. Have you ever played any?" She was curious. Her family had muggle ties, so she knew some things, but she'd always been more about exploring wizarding pastimes. Maybe she'd enjoy the muggle ones, too. Maybe.

Also, she was PRETTY sure they were done, so now they could just hang out until the next task. Cecelia was GOOD at hanging out.

Uh?? Making your clothes glow?! Lucas wasn't sure what to make of that but he knew that that wasn't what he was going for. He was thinking more cool lighting that would help set the scene while playing a game. But he had a feeling that breaking a first year's heart wasn't on today's agenda so, "Uh, yeah! Exactly like that. It would make playing games a lot cooler, wouldn't it?"

Fun. Their game room was fun. If anything, that was a relief for the fourth year, who found himself smiling. "I guess they make do with what they have, even if they don't realise what they're missing." Which was a shame because magical dancing lights while playing games would be nice. "No, I haven't. My sister only played pretend games with me. Things with dragons and adventure....." Too much information? It probably was.

He was about to ask about her what kind of games she played with her siblings or friends, but it was at that moment that Schmoe came over to look at their list. Here to entertain? He exchanged a look with Cece and just smiled. In a sense, they were. What else would a game room be for?

When it was time to move on, Lucas took down the giant poster and motioned Cece over to wherever her desk was. His desk was..... not a good idea so her desk would work. And he could sit on the floor, it wasn't that far off from where he was sitting last-

........ Uhh?????

Shopping for furniture? That sounded fine. But assembling the furniture? No. No way. That sounded like chaos!

Frowning slightly, he started flipping through the heaaaaaaavy catalogue. There wasn't any kind of strategy here: no price check or going down the list. He was just looking to see which one would work the best in their game room that had cool lights and glow in the dark clothes. The TV tables came up first, and he slowed his search down. There were...... a lot of choices. A lot of colour and design options and some that worked well with some rooms but some that worked well with other kinds of rooms and-

Breathe.

He stopped at a page and turned to show it to Cece, instead. "Hey, Cece? What do you think of this stand?"

Kaiser simply graced Schmoe with a slight nod of the head, and sat back on his cushion when the man wandered away. Though... 'man' seemed like a bit of a stretch. Schmoe reminded Kaiser of an incredibly awkward teenage boy, and he sure knew a lot of those since he had started attending Hogwarts. He wondered, vaguely, if Schmoe and Drew would get along...

... and quickly stopped that line of thought. Thinking about Drew was really just asking for trouble, and was likely to have him sliding into a worse mood than he'd already put himself in. None of that.

Anyway anYwAy aNYWAY. They were moving on, and Kaiser was listening, more or less. Actually, it was more, but he wore an expression like he was only vaguely paying attention. Unintentional? Totally on purpose? A mystery it would remain.

In any case, this wouldn't be a very difficult task for him, with his single listed item. Kaiser only wondered quite how well he would manage the building part; he knew he was good at breaking and entering, but would he have any sort of aptitude for putting furniture together? He supposed he'd find out. Not today, though.

Once Schmoe had told them to get started, Kaiser idly flipped through the catalogue he had been given. It was a good few minutes before it really occurred to him that he was just turning pages aimlessly, and even then... he just kept rifling through. Tired brain did not want to do things.

But it had to. Kaiser had to. So, once he reached the end of the catalogue, he flipped back to the front again and started the activity properly. Within moments, he was at the bed section.

What was it Schmoe had said? A lot of things, yes, but about the furniture in particular? He needed to consider material descriptions (which didn't matter), size (which didn't really matter), and price (which sort of mattered, he supposed). After a few minutes scanning through the bed section, he circled the cheapest one he could find, because if he decided to buy a bed instead of just procuring an abandoned mattress or - more likely - just sleeping directly on the floor, he would probably go for the cheapest. The bed didn't look like it would be too hard to build either - not that Kaiser had any basis for such a deduction - so at least there was that.

... Well, it looked like he was done. So now he could rest? Great. Kaiser leaned back and stretched his arms out in front of him, then above him, then behind him, before leaning one elbow on his chair-desk and gazing off into the middle distance, effectively dozing with his eyes open. It had been a long couple of days, and still they insisted on going on and on and on without pause...

Phoebe made a face at both the ugly desk and the taller chair that Eiji liked, but she figured since this was his study, she didn't have much say at the moment. She could shut up and let him have his own ugly furniture. "That light looks like a spaceship," she finally offered, and then, "Why is that globe blank?"

See? Not criticism. And just to be helpful, she offered, "I like this sofa. It seats three people and looks excellent for napping. Please? Pleaseeeee?"

Default Q for professor schmoe
Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Cole felt his face slightly flush at Professor Schmoe's mention of his name. He had said that muggles shopped at IKEA and now the whole main activity was about it. What he couldn't have guessed or predicted if his auntie had been here was that they we're going to spend the rest of the class circling items in a furniture catalogue. It could potentially be a boring or fun task. Time would tell. When he got the catalogue he went straight to the bathroom section, cross checking with his list to see what he had noted down. Flipping the pages his eyes stopped on a children's potty in an awful fugly greenish colour that made him laugh heartily out loud to nobody in particular. "Who'd buy a potty in that colour?" Shaking his head Cole continued on finding a cute heart shaped bar of soap that he just knew that his sister would have loved to have and last but not least a fugly green crocodile shower mat to put your feet when you got out of the shower. Not sure what to think Cole raised his hand to ask positively curious. "Professor Schmoe are muggles very attached to neon crocodile green colours on their accessories and items, because I've found at least two items of that colour..?" Maybe he had looked at items and not furniture but this was more fun........
