Default Muggle Studies 1 :: Sports :: Cricket

This was going to be the last lesson that Kay would be holding outside since the cold weather was slated to to begin creeping in soon, given that November would be ending soon. Decembers in Scotland were not to be messed with in terms of the temperature. In any case, it was another sporting lesson, one which would require the students to be participating in physical activity. They would be kept extra warm by their own body heat. This part of the Ground had been transformed into a pitch with ‘tree stumps’ for seating purposes a small distance away (thanks to help from one Joshua Wishart). The setup should be nothing new to the students as previous lessons that term were taught in this setting by her. Close to her feet, in neat piles were gear for the topic they were to be covering that day: bats, pads, helmets, gloves, balls, wickets and the other necessary items.

Kay sat perched on one of the makeshift tree stumps, rummaging her purple satchel. “I know I put it in here,’’ she murmured to herself, her hand deep in the bag. But it was not there, the precious fountain pen that had been the last gift her father had given her. She let out a sigh of frustration but refused to admit defeat. A careful search of the satchel commenced again. “I don’t suppose you noticed a fountain pen fall out of my bag, did you, Adi?”

The young man to whom the question was directed looked to the Muggle Studies professor. “Nope, sorry, Ms. Stewart, but I didn’t.’’ He looked regretful as he bounced on his feet excitedly. It was great to be back at Hogwarts since he had left there ten terms ago. A lot had changed from then: he was now a father to a four year old boy and twin girls on the way; he co-owned a hippogriff and dragon reserve with his husband, Benny; played pro Gobstones for the Hereford Hippogriffs and coached the sport that was subject of the lesson. It was the reason Kaysha had brought him in- to assist with the finer aspects of the game.

What had not changed was Aditya Atreyu-Rehman’s energy level. He was pumped for this lesson to get started!

Still, a visit to the Hospital Wing had to better than running around with bats and helmets and still clutching his stomach for dramatic effect, Maxton went ahead and retrieved the note from the professor.

He did feel a little pang of guilt.... Professor Stewart had always been decent enough but nope. No running around. He'd done enough of that last term, thank you very much.

With a quick thank you, and more moaning and groaning because owww poorly tummy, Max turned and slowly trudged back towards the castle.

Kay was still a little suspicious but then again, she could not feel what Max was feeling, if he was feeling anything at all. It was better to be made a fool of than to let something untoward happen to him. In any case, she would be checking in with Healer Adara.

"Could it be played like croquette? Maybe a more extreme version of it?" Since there was obviously a need for padding and such. Oh, wait. Something suddenly popped into her head about it. "Can't matches end up lasting for days on end?" Why she'd never taken much of an interest in it. Unless it was Quidditch and she was playing, she didn't want to be stuck watching a single game for days, thank you.

Kay laughed quietly. “I can see why anyone would be deceived. The equipment are almost similar but no, it cannot be played like croquette. To answer your third question, the maximum days a match lasts is five days but this depends on the format of cricket played. Adi will be explaining that shortly.’’

It was when he said he owned a Hippogriff and Dragon reserve! Now that was awesome! Only he didn't focus on that part and continued talking about sports.

Taking a good look at the equipment that was laying around, she was able to quickly eliminate a large selection of sports. Everyone seemed to be convinced they would be playing Cricket today. It made perfect sense really given all the things that were laying about. So rather than repeat what was being said again, Rylee remained quietly waiting for the lesson to move on.

And move on it did. Once again there really wasn't much point in explaining how the game was played. Both Daisy and Caolan had done a great job at that. What she did do though was pull out some parchment and a quill to take down notes just to keep herself busy. Plus who really knew what would be on any exams she might have to take in the future.

The point was, Abra had given the right answer and avoided looking like a fool (which definitely would have happened if he'd answered with such confidence and been completely wrong), so he was considering that one a success. They were, however, still only in the first few minutes of class, which meant plenty more opportunities to mess something up.

Like the very next question. Ummmm... No. This wasn't one where he could just tag onto someone else's answer, and actually Abra didn't actually know anything about cricket, other than that you probably hit a ball with a bat, and that answer paled in comparison to some of the others that had been given, so... he just kept quiet.

Why would someone want to potentially play a game for hours on end. Although he supposed Quidditch technically could go for days on end. He listened to all of the other students possible answers and took note of them.

She should've guessed quidditch predated cricket! At least Professor Stewart didn't treat it like a stupid question, but then again, it wasn't her reaction Tina was worried about. She wouldn't put it past some of her classmates to make fun of her, and she really didn't want to lose points and get sent to the headmaster's office for hexing anyone today… or ever. The less she encountered Headmaster Trent, the better!

Blink, blink. Tina stared blankly at the sports equipment, trying to riddle out the answer to the next question. How was she supposed to guess how to play cricket? She'd only known of the sport in name before this class started. All this not knowing was really starting to annoy her! She felt completely out of her element; she was used to having all the answers and knowing exactly what to say.

Tina thought for a minute. So the bats must be used with the balls… was the object of the game to hit the balls and try to knock over one of those things (wickets)? Or maybe it was to stand in front of the thing and guard it… bat the balls another person throws at you away from the thing? Both? Neither? For the second time in a row, Tina didn't have an answer to a question. And she'd had such high hopes for this class!

Not wanting to look stupid again, Tina kept quiet this time. She listened carefully to the answers from people who seemed to know what they were doing (Daisy and Caolan), trying to make a mental note, but she was even more confused than ever! Striker's end? Bowler? Wicketkeeper? Bowl the batsman out? They might as well have been speaking Gobbledygook… although if they had, Tina probably would've had a better chance at understanding them!

“I hope every single one of you are paying attention,’’ Kay encouraged. “Your colleagues are on the right track.’’ Yes, it was noted that some were making notes but she wanted to remind them that they were able to learn from their classmates in addition to herself and Adi.

"Crickets are also an insect," fyi. Incase Professor Stewart didn't know.

Zoryn was SO GOOD at Muggle Studies.

“Excellent point, Ms. Spinnet. One must remember to specify which cricket they’re referring to if it pops up in a conversation.’’ Any sarcasm was carefully kept out of her voice because the aim was not to be sarcastic. Kay meant it when she said Zoryn made an excellent point.

A person bowls the ball which in a test cricket format is red to the batsman/woman that's on strike. The batsman/woman aims to hit the ball to score runs. More can be scored if the ball hits the boundary."

Of COURSE he knew the answer but he just didn’t see the point in repeating what everyone else had said, it wasn’t like he could add anything on to it after all without going in to far too much detail and he was sure she’d ask a lot of questions about it later. “I thought I’d let everyone else have a go first” he replied to her question.

The next question however, that was all his to answer and he was going to with full gousto. Professor Stewart explained the history of Cricket and he nodded along until..

The hand shot up perhaps a little too eagerly. “Daisy has gone over the basics so I will elaborate. The game is played between two teams of eleven players. In addition to the batsman who is the one trying to score the points and the bowler are the wicketkeeper who stands behind the wicket and the fielders who are the rest of the bowlers team. They all try to bowl the batsman out in between his runs by knocking the wicket down. This progresses through the whole of the batsman’s team and then swaps to the bowlers team who then become the batters.” Was that simple enough an explanation? “It can go on for hours depending on the Umpires call - they’re the ones who decides who is in or out. Obviously the team that has the most runs wins but the points awarded in runs don’t just include each time the player gets there and back but also depends on how far the ball is hit and whether it bounces.” Yeah he was going to stop now, he was making this sound more confusing then it should be. But truth be told Cricket wasn’t that simple but it was an amazing game. Unlike football it could last hours and the scores could be ridiculously high.

Naturally, Daisy knew about how it was played. She did mention that her father played the game. Kay listened keenly then nodded when the explanation was done. “I could not have put it over better myself, Ms. Swann. Well done!’’ Next, she called on Caolan and was beyond thrilled that he was able to expound on Daisy’s explanation. “Correct as well! Everyone, I hope you were paying attention for these two explained the sport quite concisely but with the right amount of details.’’ Caolan’s knowledge of cricket would also explain why he was practically bouncing among the tree stumps like a pinball in excitement.

“I’ll now hand you back over to Adi who will explain the formats of cricket briefly.’’

SPOILER!!: HG Chloe! <3

Bounce, bounce.

Out of the corner of Adi’s eyes, he saw a hand raised and was sort of surprised when the owner addressed him. “Hey! Sure! Just come find me when it’s over.’’ He grinned and wondered what it could be about; what exactly about the Reserve, that is. Maybe she had a thing for dragons and wanted to see them. Or maybe it was the girffs?

Anywho, it was his turn once more to be in the spotlight for the lesson. Adi was ready to get down to business. “Your classmates were rather were correct in explaining the general and basic layout of how the game is played.’’ He leaned down to scoop one of the balls from the ground. Calmly, he tossed it from one hand to the other. “There are three common formats, adopted by the ICC for both the men and women games. For kiddy cricket, the format aimed towards children, the game can be much shorter.

“Before I begin explaining, there is a term you need to know. Balls are bowled in sets of six. Six legitimate bowling deliveries from the bowler to the the batsman or woman. Those six deliveries make up what is called an ‘over’. Illegitimate deliveries can come in a variety of ways which are determined by the umpires and let’s say if five deliveries are legal and one is not, that illegal delivery must be bowled again. And again and again until it’s legal. That’s right! It doesn’t matter the number of times but it MUST be six legals in total.’’

Adi tossed the ball into the air and caught it with his right hand. “The first format is called Test Cricket. Honestly, it’s the least exciting, folks. Both teams wear purely white and the setting of the field is quite different from the other formats. Ninety overs are usually bowled per day. You heard right. NINETY. Team 1 bats first and scores let’s say… 500 runs. If team 1 decides that they’ve made enough runs or every member of their team gets out, Team 2 bats. Team 2 needs to score more than 500 runs to put themselves in the lead. Whether or not this happens, Team 1 bats again and sets another target. Team two has to reach this target with the remaining overs left. Complicated, stamina demanding and a very trying format, that one. It’s enjoyed by a lot though’’ The guy wasn’t here to lie, just give the facts.

“Let’s see how good of a catch you guys are. Heads up!’’ He randomly tossed the ball towards the students after giving them a moment to prepare themselves. Who would catch that?

“Next, we have One Day Internationals or ODI. Here, fifty overs are bowled for each side. Team 1 scores X number of runs within that fifty then Team 2 tries to beat that target in their fifty. That one’s a lot more simple, right, guys?’’ He grinned around at them all before grabbing another ball. “The last format’s the most exciting.Twenty/Twenty! Also known as T20. That’s T-2-0. The name says it all. Played generally in the same manner as an ODI except with the use of twenty overs. The differences in the two include the placement of the fielding team, that’s the team not batting, and the number of overs a player from each side is allowed to bowl. This format’s so exciting because given the limited number of overs, each team tries to make the most runs as quickly as possible and the batsmen can go crazy hitting the balls among the spectators or out of the stadium or take other wild risks. Like we said earlier, cricket is very complicated and there are lots of rules and guidelines hidden under a general match. It’s too much to go into, trust me. I didn’t learn ninety percent of it until I was about fifteen and I had been playing since I was five years. So don’t go worrying about if it all sounds confusing right now. The best way to understand is to actually go about playing. That’s what your Professors and I aim to have you do today.’’ Because yes! He saw you and that wave, Noble! Adi grinned back and tossed the ball to the man. “Hi, Professor!’’ The guy was a big fan of that daughter of his. She had SO MUCH talent!

Oh, and back to you, Professor S!

SPOILER!!: Professor Noble! HI, welcome! <3

Mainly because it was on one of his favourite sports, the same sport his daughter played professionally, and his daughter's coach happened to be the one visiting today to demonstrate. It was also fair to say he didn't particularly look like his usual self, usual dark robes replaced by pristine white trousers, white shirt, and a white v-neck knit sweater with the emblem of an Invictus horse.

After giving a small wave to Adi to announce his arrival, the potions professor folded his arms across his chest and remained on the edge of the makeshift classroom of treestumps for the moment. He didn't want to interrupt Kay's flow or disturb the students - some of whom were admittedly already looking rather confused. Seeing Caolan's excitement made a smile spread across his lips though; it was clear the boy was already a fan.

It was at this moment that Kaysha took note of Ignatius standing there. Their work relationship was still strained and terms ago, she had given up on trying to be his friend. Some still blamed her for the events involving the Williams’ twins. But to work with him for lessons? This she was more than willing to do this. The woman beckoned him over. “Thank you for coming,’’ was all she said. When Adi had brought up that he was friends with Noble’s daughter and suggested that the elder Noble drop by, she was all for it. The more experience the three adults collectively had to pass on, the better of an understanding the kiddos will have. “Our second guest has arrived, everyone! I’ll leave him to explain to you how and why he has a soft spot for cricket.'’

Kay gave Noble a moment then called to the class’s attention. “Professor Noble, Adi and I are going to take you through the basics: Bowling, batting and fielding, in that exact order. Adi, Professor, you may demonstrate. After they have done so, each of you students take a ball and begin practicing on a wicket. We’ll be here to assist.’’ In the meanwhile, she was going to set up wickets for the kiddos. They were set a few feet apart from each other.

Still grinning, Adi addressed the class. “Take a good look, kids! The type of ball I’m about to bowl is called a ‘yorker'’. Quickly, he set up a wicket at a side free of any student. “I typically hold the ball this way- cross seam. What I’m aiming to do is to bowl at the wicket because that’s what the batsman will be protecting.’’ Gripping the ball properly, Adi ran towards the wicket, raising the hand gripping the ball over his head. As he neared the wicket, he aimed towards it and let the ball fly. The ball hit the wicket with a satisfying SMACK! that sent it tumbling backwards. A perfect Yorker!

OOC: Hihi! The mini activity is divided into 3 days. Day 1- Bowling practice! This is the time to have those kiddos have fun with that ball xD Just no pelting each other because a cricket ball hit can be extremely painful and can sprain/break a bone. Don’t worry about needing help with bowling and we’ve moved onto batting. I will allow catch up. Adi, Kay and Noble will correct your kiddos with their bowling techniques. They are aiming for the wickets Kay has set up. One wicket, one ball per kiddo. Feel free to make as many posts as you like. Batting practice starts in 24 hours.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was feeling nervous since she played Quidditch, not cricket. Well, used to. Muggle sports weren't her forte. When Adi threw the cricket ball, Daisy, much to her surprise caught the ball in her fingertips. She flashed Adi and Professor Stewart a wide grin, outlining her relief.

Daisy was intrigued by the presence of her Head of House but was more focused on this bowling technique. Wasn't a yorker the name of some kind of dog? No, that was a Yorkie. She was not really looking forward to bowling.

Caolan listened to the Professor and her special guest intently as they explained all the rules of cricket, the different types of matches and everything that he already knew but was happy to hear again anyway. The look of disinterest on a few students faces was incredibly disheartening, mostly because there was a tiny fraction of him that hoped some of the students might want to start a cricket team at school but apparently not..

C’mon people!

He was so engrossed in the lesson that he didn’t even notice Professor Noble join them. Suddenly a ball was tossed in amongst them and had Daisy not caught it he was ready to pounce and save someone from a ball to the face. These people wouldn’t realise how much a cricket ball hurt when it was smacked into you. They moved onto bowling and the sixteen year old practically grinning from face to face headed over to pick up his ball and move to a spare wicket away from the rest of the students.

He placed the ball in his right hand, his thumb on the seam and his index on the seam on the other side of the ball opposite his thumb and his middle finger to the right of that. Bowling was one of his specialities, he loved all the other aspects but he was a pretty decent bowler even if he did say so himself. He was s powerful bowler, he focused more on speed and knocking down the wickets first try. He held the ball up towards his chin, elbow at a right angle before leaning back slightly and making his run up. His left leg planted forward and the arm dropped down, swung over his head like a windmill sail and the ball was released towards the wicket which was knocked down with ease first try.

He headed over to retrieve his ball which he tossed up and down in the air a few times with a huge grin on his face.

It was clear that Adi was a walking Cricket dictionary. Although Hanna had played cricket for a long time, her understanding of the sport was very simple. She had learned by observation, not theory. She didn't really know the specifics, and was happy to take in all of the information both he and Professor Stewart were giving them. She knew they had to hit the ball with the wicket and avoid the stumps from falling down. And if you were throwing the ball... well you wanted to hit the stumps. Or something. And catching the ball was something else you could do.

She watched as Adi demonstrated good bowling form, trying to take in what he did so that she could attempt to replicate it. And then Daisy caught his ball and it was up to everyone else to fetch their own. The ball and wicket weren't an unknown tool in her hand, but the wickets were heavier than what she was used to using. Mostly plastic ones, because she preferred the lighter ones. But after practicing with the beater bat, she was getting better strength. She looked around her before she started waving it back and forth carefully, getting a feel for it.

Was everyone else following this? Because Abra was not following this. Deliveries? Legal? Illegal? Overs and runs and bowling, oh my.

He tried to listen and pay attention, he really did, and it was any wonder that steam wasn't pouring from his ears as he tried. His brain just wasn't wired for sports other than Quidditch, he decided, though he did stare intently at the guy - Adi - as he spoke, trying to at least look like he was understanding when actually he really really wasn't actually. In fact, the best part of the explanation was not to worry if it was all confusing. Bit of a relief, really.

It wasn't until Professor Stewart spoke to Noble that he realised the Potions professor had turned up, given how intently he'd been staring at Adi while trying to understand what he was saying, and Abra jumped as soon as he noticed him. Merlin, don't sneak up on a guy like that.

Back to the lesson, and it was time to get practicing. This was also something of a relief, because it meant getting up and moving around again, which was just what Abra needed to try and work off this horrible chill. He was a little uncertain about this whole throwing business - or 'bowling', or whatever; Abra was a Seeker, he caught things rather than threw them. But, well, he'd give it a go. He sort of had to. That was sort of the whole point of the lesson.

Retrieving a ball, Abra went ahead and found a free wicker. ... Wicker? Yes, okay, it was called a wicker now. He could have tried to copy the example given, and that was probably the general idea, but mostly Abra was focused on hitting the thing. With some of hesitance, he threw the ball underarm at the wicker, and undershot it by about three feet. Because of course he did.

Well, the ball was heavy!

He was confident because he was sure, Professor Stewart confirming it all in the end. The topic at hand for today’s lesson was cricket. Septimus listened to the woman explain the history with interest, though the fourth year had to admit the knowledge of Mr. Rehman was just a little more attention-getting. If a lot to take in all at once. And then there was the revelation of the second guest…Professor Noble looking all---very un-Noble if he had to admit. Must be a fan and knowledgeable on the subject himself.

WOAH!

Flying cricket ball. Which Daisy wound up catching. And then they were getting hands on once watching the demonstrations. Septimus moved to retrieve a cricket ball of his own to try his hand at the bowling aspect of the game, heading towards a free wicket to aim at. Seemed kinda like what he did as a chaser except with a smaller, narrower target since he was trying to hit the wicket not tossing through the wider inside of a quidditch hoop. Only one way to find out what his luck was with it. First grip the cricket ball…than move towards the wicket while tossing said ball.

Close…but no hit.

IF anyone was wondering, despite her boyfriend apparently being ill and leaving class and all, Bel Macindoe was in her ELEMENT. THIS Australian LOVED cricket. LOVED IT. PREFERRED playing a casual game on the beach of course, where you just went ahead and shoved three bits of driftwood into the sand and had at it, but any cricket was good! Even test cricket. There wasn't much better than a day in the sun watching except for a day in the sun playing!

So it was probably no shock to find that this was beyond easy for her. Bel grabbed a cricket ball, enjoying the heft of it in her hand and casually tossing it in the air and catching it a few times. Then she went over to the wickets to set them up, and balance the two bails on top. Would they get to play a real game?????

She went back past the bowling crease and kept going so she'd have space for a good run up, then turned around, rubbed the ball on her knee, and began a run up, launching into a very-practiced overarm bowl. The ball hit the wickets and knocked off both bails, and Bel being Bel turned to look at the adults with her hands up in the air, "HOWZAAAAAT!?"

Maybe a real game wasn't a good idea after all, she definitely was someone who had an advantage here.

Default Super confused witch.. lol
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

She frowned and looked to the ground, "I'm sorry professor, I wasn't feeling very well and was stuck in the loo. I'll do better." It was bad being late in Chloe's eyes, but being late with your Head of House could she jump in the lake and hide yet? She took the woman's gloves though and slipped them on, "Thank you" it was super nice of her and Chloe made a mental note to send her a proper thank you after class as well.

Now she was listening to everyone talk about different things that she didn't understand at all. What did she miss when she was late? "Yobers?" Is that what he just said? That was the weirdest name in the history of ever she thought. Looking at the balls she stood trying to figure out this came. "Crucket? That is an interesting name."

As she watched the other with the ball she focused on see what they were exactly doing, when it looked like they were just rolling something that seemed hard. She went after one that was coming near her and picked it up. "So I roll it and not just catch it?" #seekerproblems

Daisy was intrigued by the presence of her Head of House but was more focused on this bowling technique. Wasn't a yorker the name of some kind of dog? No, that was a Yorkie. She was not really looking forward to bowling.

Adi grinned back when the girl caught the ball. “Nice reflexes!’’ he complimented. He wondered if she played another sport and that had made her develop them. “Think you need help with the bowling?’’ He was prepared to help!

Kaysha beamed when Daisy successfully caught the ball. Playing Quidditch no doubt helped her to develop the reflexes Adi spoke about.

Maaaan!

This kid was good! Truthfully, he reminded Adi of himself at that age. “You’re pretty awesome!’’ Adi held out a closed fist. Don’t leave him hanging without a return fist bump, Caolan! “You play regularly? You a member of any cricket club? Team?’’ Questions… the guy had them all!

Kaysha would be lying if she said she wasn’t in awe. She had not known her Ravenclaw was that talented at cricket. “Well done, Mr. Wilson!’’

”I know you can do better than that,’’ Kay spoke to Abra. She was standing a few feet from him, observing everyone. Don’t worry about it, however. You’ll get there. Do you need another demonstration?’’

Kay suppressed a chuckle. She didn't want to seem as though she was laughing at Chloe. "Yorker. Cricket,'' she corrected in a patient voice. "It's more of a throw than a roll. Much like this.'' The woman lifted her arm, bringing it over her head and then directly before her. "When your arm is ahead of you, release the ball. Just take aim at the wicket.''

Maybe a real game wasn't a good idea after all, she definitely was someone who had an advantage here.

This young woman caught Adi's keen eyes. Working with teens over the years had given him an intuition to recognise those talented at cricket. Maybe it was their stance, the way they held the ball... it was just something. The actions, down to rubbing the ball on the knee, to him that she was VERY familiar with the game. What was totally impressing was the way she bowled completely knocking the bails off. And her appeal! Adi rather enthusiastically raised his right hand above his head, his index finger pointing towards the sky. That was the sign to indicate that a wicket had fallen or a batsman was out.

You know what?

Adi was having a GREAT time! It was as though he were actually conducting one of his coaching sessions. He felt impressed, amused, and the urge to continuously encourage the students.

Batting meant that they all had to take the necessary safety precautions. Merlin knew how dangerous a cricket ball could get. He had seen some nasty injuries and would not like anything of the sort to happen here. “So, guys. When we’re batting, safety gear is necessary. There is no finite amount of times I can stress on this. What you’ll need are pads or leg guards and helmets.’’ Too bad there wasn’t any protection for the belly and arms.

“Everyone, grab a pair of the pads and I’ll show you how to get them on. Grab a helmet while you’re at it.’’ Adi got two pads and a helmet for himself and waited a few minutes while the class got theirs. “Got what you need, guys? Awesome! So, let’s start with the pads. If you look behind each pair, you’ll see there are straps on them. All you need to do is to undo the straps, fit the pad against your leg like soooo…” Adi, without a care in the world, sat down on the ground and carefully demonstrated what he meant. “After that, just put those straps back together. You want to make sure that it’s tight enough so that you can move around without it falling off but not so tight as to cut off your blood circulation. Repeat the exact steps for the second pad.’’ In no time, he had his leg guards on. “Right!” Bounce, bounce! “Who needs help?’’

A few moments for helping any student in need then he instructed them to put on the helmet. “Helmets are easy enough,’’ he happily told the young ones (not that he was old. Hehe). Adi slung his over this head, adjusting the strap beneath his chin. “Now you’re all ready to begin batting!’’ he announced. “What you want to do is to position yourself before the wicket. If you’re dominant or comfortable with using your right hand, you stand before the wicket facing the right. The opposite applies of you’re left handed. Makes sense so far?’’

Yes?

Goody!

“In order to grip your bat properly, use your right hand to grip the lower part of the handle and your left to grip the upper part. Your stance is simple. Your feet must be a little distance apart. This allows you to be able to put more power into hitting the ball while grounding yourself.’’ It was pretty simple! “The reason you’re defending the wicket is because the aim of the bowler is to hit it with the ball. Successfully doing that means that the batsman is ‘out’. That is, another batsman must now take the place of the previous one. The overall aim, in addition to scoring runs, is to get all of the opposing team’s batsmen out. That being said, anyone need me to go that over?’’

Kay had donned her own leg guards and helmet. She felt a little uncomfortable walking in the guards. They slowed her down a little as she was not accustomed to them. The helmet felt heavy on her head. “Go ahead, everyone. Practice your stance and gripping the bat.’’ She was going to get some practice in herself before bowling to the kiddos. “Adi, Professor Noble and I will take turns bowling to each of you when you have mastered holding the bat correctly.’’

OOC: Bowling practice is still allowed, guys! For the batting practice, you need not wait until Adi, Kay or Noble bowls to your kiddo. Just pretend that one of them did, once or multiple times (this is up to you!) and have your kiddos react to the bowling.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy looked at Adi and nodded. "Yeah, I think I do need help with bowling. It is just so unfamiliar to me."

She watched Caolan and Bel bowl their Yorkers with an expression of stunned amazement written on her face. How was she going to do that? She sighed dejectedly.

Teapot Occamy| gryphons&giraffes&goats,OH MY | chaser of the truth | flutiful❧

This game lasted for multiple days? Like, did the people who played professionally get breaks to eat and sleep during matches? She had other classes to go to, so she couldn’t just be camped out here all week. Test cricket sounded awful. Cricket seemed like a very confusing game. How could anyone ever remember all those rules? Cordelia was struggling to remember what had been explained, and that wasn’t even the half of the full rules of the game. Quidditch she could understand and play, but the game of cricket was new and confusing to her.

For bowling practice, Cordelia held the ball cross seamed as Adi had demonstrated and threw the ball at the wickets as hard as she could in one strong, smooth motion. She swung her arm around back towards her body after letting go of the ball and stepped forward with her right leg. Her ball landed about a yard short of the wicket. Retrieving the ball, Cordelia tried again, this time adjusting the angle of her throw. Over and over she repeated this motion. Each time the result got a little better.

When the time came for batting, Cordelia listened to the explanation of what protective gear was required. Sounded like the sort of situation in which it would be in her best interest to temporarily disconnect from her insulin pump so as to avoid damaging it if it got hit by a ball. After putting her pump away in a secure location with the rest of her things for the time being and testing her blood sugar, Cordelia was ready to get back in the action. She grabbed a pair of leg pads and a helmet and fit the leg straps the way that Adi had showed them to. Even with the straps tightened as much as she could get them, the leg pads she had chosen were still a little loose on her skinny legs. The leg pads were huge on her tiny body. Did they come in a smaller size? These must be the ones made for all the big kids.

Cordelia’s eyes disappeared into the helmet as she lifted it over her head. Woah, it was pretty dark in here. ”I need help!” Yeah, this was nothing like quidditch or football. With enough practice and help she might be able to become good at cricket though. Cordelia stood facing what she assumed was right, though she still hadn’t figured out how to adjust the helmet so it didn’t slip over her eyes so she couldn’t tell for sure. The bat felt strange in her hands and she couldn’t quite figure out which side of it she was meant to hit the ball with. The bat was over half as long as she was tall, and she struggled to swing it. It must have been quite the site for any spectators to see the small girl blindly trying to swing the bat that was almost as big as she was.

Kaira loved cricket. As she put on her pads, something occurred to her. She raised her hand and asked: 'Mr Rahman..if I may ask..which cricket team is your favourite? And which player?,' she asked, curiously.

“Thanks!”

Cue a big goofy grin.

Of course Caolan wasn’t going to leave the dude hanging! That was basically breaking guy code and also he had complimented him on his skills. He clenched his fist and fist bumped Adi’s. Could he call him Adi? He didn’t really catch his surname and the guy seemed pretty chill and wouldn’t mind. He grinned virtually from ear to ear. “I used to play for my County back home in the Under 15’s league” And he had loved it but never really felt brave enough to go for the national team. “But I had to give up my position when I came here.” He wasn’t able to attend practices or matches and he only felt it fair to hang up his whites and give someone else a chance. “I miss it though, wish Hogwarts had their own team..” Hint hint. Please set one up? Or y’know.. could invite him to some summer training camp or something? Anything? Please?

His Head Of House proceeded to compliment too and he smiled back at her. “Thanks Professor Stewart.” Her Ravenclaws were secretly a talented bunch.

The lesson moved onto batting which after bowling was his favourite position to play. It was fielding that needed some improvement for him. He headed over to the protective pads and strapped on his left one first followed by the right and then on went the helmet over his head. It was a little tight but never mind.. he stood before the wicket, feet slightly apart, body positioned towards the right and hands gripping the bat. The ball came towards him at some speed (perhaps the Professors didn’t want to go too lightly on him). He hit it at precision dead in the centre of his bat. The ball went flying over the heads of the students (thank Merlin they were short) and somewhere out into the grounds.

Err.. Did he have to go retrieve that now?

"No, that's alright thanks, Professor," Abra said with a smile, as he retrieved his ball and returned to his starting position. "I've got this." He did not, in fact, have this.

A few more times Abra tried throwing the ball at the wicker, getting closer and closer with his underarm throw. Eventually, when he got a bit more confident with the ball, he even did what everyone else was doing and did that weird, over-enthusiastic overarm throw. At first, the ball ended up simply sailing past the wicker and made Abra have to travel even further to go retrieve it. It was, however, eventually successful. On throw twenty-seven, Abra finally nailed the wicker.

First try!

Ahem.

And just in time to move on. On Adi's say-so, Abra went ahead and grabbed some leg pads and a helmet and got suited up ready to try some batting. He doubted that that cricket ball hitting him would hurt any more than a bludger, and he'd taken a hit from one of those to his unprotected head once - admittedly he'd ended up with a fractured skull, but that was neither here nor there - but if pads were necessary to bat, then he'd wear them.

Abra picked up a bat and practiced his grip for a few moments, standing as though he was in front of a wicker so that he was facing left, as he tended to naturally favour his left hand most of the time. Once he felt pretty confident in that, he headed over to the wicker he'd initially chosen and did the whole stance and bat-holding thing over there. He was feeling slightly more confident about this, because he'd had plenty of practice with beaters' bats and bludgers, and how different could it be, really?

How different indeed.

When the ball was sent his way, all thoughts of cricket went completely out of Abra's mind. He drew the bat back and by the time he swung it forwards, had ended up holding it more like he was two-hand-swinging a beaters' bat. The ball, of course, was aimed at the wicker, which was significantly lower than his swing, so Abra's exuberant swing ended up missing entirely.

Nettie simply stared and listened to the Professor and this Adi guy as they explained the rules of cricket. She had NO clue what half these words meant. Yorker? Bowling? Wicket? WHAT DID THEY MEAN? She was scribbling anxiously on her parchment, trying to keep up with it as best she could.

She watched the demonstration of "bowling" - which, this was definitely NOT bowling but ok - and then took the ball to get ready to do it herself. It was sort of like playing Chaser. Except not really. But she was going to use those Chaser muscles to CHUCK this thing as best she could at the...wicket, right?

Gearing up, she increased her speed, did a little hop thing, and SHOT the ball at the wicket like Adi had done...and watched as it instead landed about two feet shy of the wicket. Hmpf. That hadn't worked out well at all...

Patrick watched as they bowled the ball. He felt a bit weird since it was similar to his baseball games but he just was so awkward and so unsure of what he was supposed to do. He would not be good at this part. He tried a few times to toss the ball the same way that Adi had but it wasn’t the same as what he was used to.

Oh good now they would get to things that he knew personally. He knew how to swing a bat he figured it was similar. He looked at the way he was supposed to hold the thing and watched the few students who did it before him. He prepped himself to go and wait, Nobel he was a fan of cricket?

That blew Patrick away.

He gripped the bat again stepping up as he readied himself to see the ball coming toward him and swing. He took a deep breath watching it come closer and he swung with the confidence of someone who hits a few home runs every now and then.

Wowzers it went further than he thought. But he was not a fan of how the bat felt in his hand it was not anything like a baseball bat. He hoped he didn’t look like a total fool.

Adi saw the way Daisy was looking at Caolan and Bel. The expression on her face told it all of how she felt. “Hey, don’t worry. You’ll get there. I can bet those two did a lot of practice before they got their bowling perfectly.

“Come on! Let’s do this. Just follow my actions, alright? We’ll go through this step by step.’’
Adi tossed the ball in his grip in the air then caught it. “First step, bring your arm and the ball over your head as you run in towards the wicket. Then level your hand and let the ball go.’’

SPOILER!!: Cordelia! <3

Naturally, Kay was trying her best to keep her eyes on everyone as much as possible but she only had one pair of eyes. So when she heard the call for help, it took her no time to trace the voice back to Cordelia. At least she thought it was Cordelia... a closer look told her it was.“The gear has completely swallowed you,’’ Kay said unnecessarily and chuckled a bit. “Here, Ms. Winklebleck. I’ve got the right sizes for you right… here.’’ Professor Stewart stooped to examine the pile of gears, her blue eyes moving from the said pile to the frame of the first year. After some careful thought, she selected a pair of pads and a helmet. Both items were smaller than the ones selected prior. “Try these.’’

Questions about his likes in the cricketing world! Adi liked this. “India and England without a doubt. Both sides have produced excellent players. As for player, I’d say Noel Walsh. That guy is the perfect all rounder.’’

OOC: Noel is a made up player because listing a player from this era would be so weird given that the RP is in the year 2097 xD

SPOILER!!: Caolan! <3

Adi wasn’t left hanging with the fist bump which pleased him. It kinda felt as though he were back at Hogwarts just enjoying lessons as opposed to being a man with many responsibilities. Not that he didn’t love his life at this point. He just hadn’t realised how much he had missed Hogwarts and being a student. Hearing Caolan’s explanation, he nodded. He understood all too well because… “I had to give it up too. If I hadn’t, my goal was to be an international player for England.’’ Also, was Adi imagining it or did Caolan seem to be hinting at something? “We should make plans for you to visit the club I coach at. If you want to of course.’’

“Quite welcome, Mr. Wilson.’’ Caolan and Adi seemed quite taken in their talks of the game so Kay decided to leave them for now. Her Ravenclaw was in good hands.

Adi shielded his eyes against the glare from the sky to watch the ball fly. MAN! That kid was more than good! “Perfect shot!’’ he said happily. “Don’t worry about the ball, we’ve got plenty to work with for now.’’ When the class was over, he was just going to Summon them all back. “Get ready for another. This time I’ll bowl to you.’’ Over the years, yorkers had become a specialty of his, which was what he bowled to Caolan now.

It took him quite a while but he eventually got it and she cheered from the distance. “Excellently done, Mr. Botros!’’

When took up the bat, however, she did not miss just how confident he looked holding it. Even if Abra missed by a long run, Kaysha was quite certain that he would haul that ball along a long way.

"Not quite, Ms. Gladin." Kay grinned and patiently began to demonstrate how to bowl. This time, however, she did so with an imaginary ball as the one she had prior had been batted off somewhere by another kiddo. "It's more of a toss than pelting. Keep working at it! Goodness! Kay's gaze followed the ball as it sailed by over her head. She had seen and heard the crack of the bat as Patrick struck the ball. What a beauty of a hit it had been! "Nicely done, Mr. Dooley!''

Now they were on to the fielding practice, the very last aspect of the activity before an actual game. “Everyone, if you will please follow me to another part of the grounds.’’ Kay beckoned the students then led to an area a short distance away free of tree stumps and other hurdles. Here, a cricket pitch had been set up. Joshua had been a big help to her with getting this done. On the pitch, wickets were already set up and the ground marked with white paint. At intervals on the field surrounding the pitch, there were bright neon green plates.

“This is what a typical cricket pitch looks like. From one end, the batman bats and the other, the bowler bowls. The white lines are there for reasons. As you can see, the wicket is resting on one on both ends of the pitch. The remaining free line is where the batsman rests his bat.’’ In demonstration, Kay stepped up before one of the wickets, readied her stance and rested her bat on the line. “From the other end, the bowler runs up but it must be noted that he cannot over step the white line on his end.’’

The last aspect of the basics- fielding!

“Field placements are very important. Each format has their restrictions but since we’re not going to be playing one of these formats, rather the little match that we’re about to have is just for fun and for your understanding, I’ll explain the basic layout.

“First, there’s the wicket keeper. He’s positioned behind the wicket and tries to out the batsman. Additionally, he’ll try to stop the ball from heading to far. The further the ball goes, the more runs the batting team is likely to score.’’
Adi swung his arms, an imaginary bat in his hands. “Runs can be scored in three ways: when the batsmen run between the wickets- the number of times they run between determines the number of runs-, when the ball goes over those ropes on the ground called the boundary…’’ He pointed to the rope that surrounded the field about 150 yards from the pitch. “That’s four runs. And when the ball is hit among the spectators which gives six runs.’’ There was a pause as he let that sink in. “See those green plates? They mark some of the basic fielding places. There’s backstop.’’ Adi pointed. “To the left is third man, to that left is Point. Front. Cover. Deep cover. Mid off. Mid on. Deep Mid- wicket. Square leg. Fine leg.’’ He carefully pointed to each of them. “Don’t worry about remembering the names. Professor Stewart indicated that she will provide a complete diagram of all the positions for each of you.’’

Kay nodded. “Indeed I will. But onto our fielding practice. As there are so many of you, we shall rotate the fielding positions. For now,I would like 11 of you to take up positions next to the plates. I will be bowling and Adi will be batting and you lot will be doing the fielding. In other words, you need to stop the ball when it comes in your direction as quickly as possible then throw it back to me. Go ahead. Any eleven of you take up one of the positions. For the person who will be the wicket keeper, here are some special wicket keeping gloves. It is required that you wear them as the ball is in closer proximity to you and comes at an extra force.’’

Once this was done, she announced. “Fielding practice starts now.’’ And she began to bowl to Adi.

OOC: Bowling and Batting practice are still allowed! I’ve been keeping track of where each of you are in terms of this mini activity so no need to worry about not finishing all three activities. For the fielding practice, just pretend that your charrie is next to a plate and Adi and Kay are doing their thing. Have fun with how your charrie handles chasing down the ball Also, here is a short video of how batting and bowling works. Note the wicket keeper behind the batsman. In this vid, the batsman was able to hit sixes in the entire over by clearing the boundary ropes (the ball went into the crowd each time in this case).
The main activity starts in 24 hours!

Kaira grinned. 'Me too! I also love Mahin Tendulkar, he is such a good batsman. Then there is Virat Jadeja, the all-rounder from Team India' she added. She loved cricket. Cricket was almost a religion, back in her mother's place.

OOC: Yes, I got that

They were playing cricket. Best lesson ever!! She moved on to near the plates to start fielding. She didn't wanna be the wicket keeper, she was afraid she would not be good enough at it. She stood there, waiting for the next set of instructions.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

Kaysha was certainly keeping things moving, wasn't she? "I've loved cricket since I was introduced to it by friends as a boy," Noble started to explain why he was such a fan of the sport. He'd grown up with the sound of leather on willow in the summer. "Plus my daughter plays for the team Adi coaches." And he was so proud of her achievements with the Kent Ladies' team. That said, Noble had cracked right on with the practices, supervising students and retrieving the odd ball that came in his direction, tossing it to the nearest student to save them getting another from the bucket.

"Don't get too disheartened," he spoke to Daisy and Nettie. "Yorkers aren't easy to perfect." In his opinion, Adi had been showing off a little, bowling at such a long length. Yorkers were usually used to unsettle the batsman by the ball bouncing so close to their feet. "Most players specialise in either batting or bowling...my daughter, for example, rarely bowls since she focuses on batting and wicketkeeping." Which meant he'd spent a lot of time bowling at her when she'd been off school in the summer. He picked up a nearby ball, shining it slightly on his trousers and leaving red scuff marks. "There's also lots of types of bowlers. Some focus on being as fast as possible, whereas others make use of putting unpredictable spin on the ball." A spin bowler himself, he bowled to a nearby wicket to show what he meant; the trajectory of the ball was much slower, bouncing further away from the wicket and curling to the left in the air.

...and he did hear Caolin saying about a Hogwarts' team? Noble's ears pricked up. "I'm sure that could be arranged..." And make his daughter very happy indeed. "Maybe Bel would like to join too?" He looked over to his Captain, who had quite the bowling arm on her, it appeared. Though he shouldn't have been surprised; she was an Aussie.

And talking of quidditch players, Patrick and Abra caught his eye. Confidence went a long way when trying to get a big hit. "Nice shot, Patrick," he said, marvelling at the ball flying past him. "I sense someone's played a bit of baseball though?" The grip betrayed him. "Try adjusting your hands. You want the V between your thumb and first finger on the back of the bat." He picked up a bat to demonstrate what he meant. "It'll give you more control of placement." Which was very important in cricket.

He turned to the Gryffindor Prefect now. "Try keeping the bat down, Abraham, and get a bit lower in your knees as you sweep forward." He showed what he meant, tapping the base of the bat against the ground before giving it a swing. He would tend to bowl left-handed and bat right-handed, but being ambidextrous, it wasn't to hard to stand facing the left for now so the Gryffindor didn't have to try mirror him. "If you let the bat up here..." he raised it up, "Can you see how it leaves a big hole for the bowler to hit the wicket? That could easily be your time batting over."

"Thanks, Professor!" Abra replied gleefully to Stewart after he had successfully knocked down the wicker.

Then he'd had his go at batting, and then Noble was speaking to him and Abra looked slightly nonplussed for a moment, looking between the professor and the bat, and then the wicker behind him. Keep the bat... down... right. Lower in the knees... riiiiiight. As Noble went through each instruction, Abra tried to copy what he was doing. "Ohhhh... okay, I get it... Because I'm meant to be protecting the wicker-... wicket, right?" Right. He remembered now.

Abra's second try at batting went a lot better than his first had. He was a little more conscious of how he was holding it, for a start, and once he kept it in his head to keep the bat down, it was a lot easier. He did, of course, have a little experience hitting bludgers (to let off steam, rather than while playing as a beater) and not only was the cricket ball smaller and more predictable than a bludger, but the bat had a bigger surface area for hitting it away with. He felt reasonably confident that he could manage it this time, with the bat in the right place.

So when that second ball came and Abra took a swing at it, he did indeed manage to get it with a good thwack, though almost at the end of the bat, and sent it careening off to Merlin only know where. Hey, that was pretty fun!

"Thanks Professor Noble!" Abra said with an enthusiastic grin towards the man. He felt downright intimidated by Noble sometimes, and found him to be such a professory professor, but Abra liked him in spite of that. Perhaps maybe actually because of that, actually.

But it was time to move on again, and so Abra moved with the rest of the group to where they were being led. He hoped that this next part would have something to do with catching, because that was absolutely where his talents lay (although it would have been better if he could be on a broom at the same time), and he was not disappointed. At Professor Stewart's go-ahead, he quickly headed out to one of the plates relatively far away, and got ready to start doing some catching. Fielding. Whatever.

Abra didn't have to wait long at all for a ball to come flying in his direction. Almost before Adi hit the ball Abra got a feeling like it would be coming his way, and he immediately perked up. The ball was hit, and off it went flying, sort of towards Abra but mostly to his right. Naturally, Abra went running after it with an "I've got this!", arm outstretched and ready to catch it. He ran, he ran, he put on a last burst of speed, LeAPT INTO THE AIR... and caught it. Seeker skiiiiiiills.

Beaming to himself (but also breathing heavily because Merlin, running was so not his thing), Abra returned the ball and went back to his plate.

OOC: Yes, I got that

They were playing cricket. Best lesson ever!! She moved on to near the plates to start fielding. She didn't wanna be the wicket keeper, she was afraid she would not be good enough at it. She stood there, waiting for the next set of instructions.

Adi listened in wonder. This little firstie was all up to date on her players “We need to talk more about cricket, Kaira! We can talk about players from way back in the days if you know the history about them.’’ Especially team India!

SPOILER!!: Abra! <3

Such talent taken from the Quidditch pitch to the cricket pitch was not unnoticed. It was was certainly a joy to watch. Noble certainly helped by providing extra support and motivation. As she had with other kiddos in the form of compliments, Kay clapped whenever she was able to catch a glimpse of Abra in action. Yes, he certainly was good with catching. Then again... Seeker.

* * * * * * *

Kay took a look at her watch. Time was moving rather quicker than usual, or so it seemed to her. There was just about half an hour left to the allotted lesson time which meant it was time to move onto the final aspect. She clapped her hands together to attain the attention of the kiddos. Too bad this session had to end. They were all making so much progress. Ignatius was certainly a sport, assisting and offering tips. Kay was grateful to him. “Alright, everyone! Great effort so far from each of you! Now that we have completed the practice sessions, we’ll move onto the main event- an actual match!’’ How exciting!

“We will be dividing up into teams, Adi leading one and I the other. Professor Noble will be our umpire. In a regular match, there are two umpires but in this case, we’ll make do with one. Now, a coin toss is done to determine which teams bats or fields first.’’ Kay opened her palm to reveal a Sickle. “Adi, your call.’’ Balancing the coin on her thumb and index fingers, it was flipped into the air.

Bounce, bounce, bounce!

Adi was excited! Like… SUPER excited. “Tails,’’ was his response to the question.

The Sickle spun and fell into Kay’s outstretched hand. “Tails it is. This means Adi gets to decide whether he wants to bowl or bat.’’ She looked to the man beside her.

“When faced with this question, captains would survey the pitch and the conditions under which the match will be played. Conditions include the weather and the dryness of the pitch. But today, I think my team will be bowling and fielding first.’’ No need to think about such conditions.

That means my team bats. Teams will now be selected.’’ And so the usual process began where the captains chose their teams until the kiddos were assigned as follows:

SPOILER!!: Adi’s Team!

Trinetta Gladin
Caolan Wilson
Fantine "Tina" Dantes
Malachi Mitsue
Maxie B. Anderson-Belfort
Kaira Parker
Ashleigh-Marie Ashby
Stasya Dalgaard-Volkova
Patrick Dooley
Bel Macindoe
Eamon Macnair
Septimus Hadley-Nairne
Cordelia Winklebleck

SPOILER!!: Kay’s Team!

Torii Stark
Zoryn Spinnet
Chloe McCarthy
Chloe Kettleburn
Jackson Thomas
Dorian Katharos
Abraham Botros Jr.
Daisy Eurus Swann
Lucas Sebastian Dakest
Hanna Newton
Rylee Caelyn Prichard
Sterling Archer Calrissian
Cameron Tamesis

“Come on, team! Take up your places along the green plates and surrounding spots! I’ll take up a spot at Mid- Off. Partick, I’d like for you to bowl first. Caolan, wicket keeper. ’’

Kay too directed her team but in this case, she needed to select her batsmen or batswomen but in this case, it was both. “Mr. Botros, Ms. Swann, you both will bat first. A reminder to everyone, that scoring runs between the wickets is somewhat like baseball- run from one wicket to the other once the ball is far enough. If it’s not, you don’t have to because the fielders can use this to their advantage and get you out in one of the many ways. For the fielders, it’s their job to get the ball to the wicket keeper or bowler as quickly as they can. Have fun, each and everyone of you.’’

“Let’s play!’’ The enthusiasm running through him was unbelievable! Already he had run off to take up his position.

OOC: Hey, guys! Please start wrapping up mini activity posts now. For the main activity, the teams were just split in half in the order of how I have you on my spreadsheet. This part of the activity will last for FOUR days. On the first two (7th-9th February at 22:00/10 PM EST) we’ll have Adi’s team fielding and bowling. As the RPers, you don’t have to actually wait for another RPer to post about the actions of the ball. Bowlers, pretend you’re bowling. Batsmen/woman, pretend the ball was bowled. Fielders, pretend the ball is coming in your direction. Post as many times as you want

Default pretending patrick went since we're apparently first LOL
curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Oh good, Nettie was with the cricket guy. She hadn't really got a chance to do batting practice - she'd done horribly at the bowling bit, so she had tried to perfect that before moving on and had of course missed practice. Noble had helped her feel a bit better, though, pointing out that most people focused on one bit, batting OR bowling.

Well. Here goes nothing. Time to just get started and see if she was able to pull this off and not get hurt in the process. If she couldn't play Quidditch because she got injured playing cricket she would NOT be happy!

Good thing she'd spent that extra time on the bowling bit, because it looked like they were up to bat. Or wait, no, that wasn't the phrase. They were just bowling and protecting the wicket? Ugh. She was already lost. She sat back for just a moment, waiting for Patrick to go before she got started. Then, it was her turn.

Taking the cricket ball in her hands - the YORKER, as she now knew - she took a few deep breaths. More of a throw than a pelt, Adi had said. Alright. She could do this. She took a few steps, increasing in speed and then throwing the yorker as hard as she could at the wicket, hoping it made contact. This time it DID hit it, although not very hard. But at least CONTACT!

Sooooo she was on the batting team, which was.....fine, she guessed. She was still trying to get the rules straight in her mind, actually. Way more complicated than Quidditch, football (regular and American) or even her muggle sport of choice, lacrosse. How did the inventors of this game decide that a complicated game would make a fun one?

Caolan had made the BEST decision to come to Muggle Studies today, this lesson literally couldn’t get any better and although he wouldn’t be doing an OWL in it (for obvious reasons) he didn’t mind at all that he was spending a couple of hours playing one of his favourite sports in the whole world. Forget Quidditch, this was what real guys played.

It was a shame that Adi had to give up the sport he loved so much. Caolan hadn’t given much thought to going pro after graduating mostly because he knew his Ma would prefer he take the education route in case ‘something went horribly wrong’. He loved the game however and he was good at it so it was definitely a contender for the future. “What made you give it up?” he asked genuinely interested. Was it time? Injury? He found something he loved more? Playing for England would be a very big honour after all. As for a going to look at one of the clubs Adi coached for - it was like he had read the younger boys mind. He grinned. “Yeah sure! I’d like that.” As long as he got to play for a bit too.

The sixteen year old was relieved he didn’t have to run off to fetch the ball that he had batted somewhere into bushes in the grounds. It would’ve taken forever to retrieve it and it would be a waste of their precious playing time. Instead Adi bowled a very fast ball towards him and the Ravenclaw managed to hit it far away despite how surprised he was by the power behind it. No wonder this guy almost went pro.. “You should’ve joined the England team!” he remarked.

The lesson quickly moved onto fielding and Caolan got to work catching the ball and tossing it towards the wicket to knock it down. It wasn’t his favourite aspect of Cricket but that wasn’t to say that he didn’t like doing it. Every part of the game was as important as the next. Professor Noble piped in with his thoughts of making a Hogwarts team and he beamed in response. “Really? That would be so cool.” Please make it happen?

Suddenly they were split into teams and Caolan was placed onto Adi’s team and given the role of wicket keeper. He put on the protective gloves and took up position behind the wicket ready to catch any stray balls that flew in his direction. Let’s be honest, the way that some of these kids were playing it was very likely to happen.

So, Professor Noble was umpiring! Which meant they all got to play! Hanna waited to see what team she'd be on, and headed towards her own head of house once her name was called. They were batting first. Hanna watched as a few people went through and bowled, wicketed, and hit the ball, running between, and the fielders. It was a lot of positions. So many. It was nothing like how she used to play at home. It was just... someone threw the ball, and someone hit the ball. Or tried, at least. There were also a lot more people around. And besides, all three adults seemed to understand cricket.

Hanna gave the claps and whoops of cheer to her team mates as they went, hit the ball, ran, came back. It was interesting to watch everyone, though. How people threw the ball, and also caught it. And the people on the field.

When it was her turn, a flutter of nervous butterflies went through her. Up she went, picking up the bat ready for the ball. She stood in a potion that felt most comfortable and intuitive to her, watching the person throwing the ball. Once they released it, she swung the bat forward, and did a full turn, bat leading the way. There was no ball connecting with the bat. It was behind her.
