Someone was coming. Alysson whipped her head around. What if it was the Healer who had followed her because she'd decided that she had to be admitted. Or to kill her right then and there only to diagnose her with 'death'. Okay, that last one was quite unlikely but the recent encounter had made her feel rather paranoid.

Vic.

Good. It wasn't the Healer. She looked relieved. Lowering the mirror from her face, she pushed her hair back. "A little shaken after that health examination just now." There was an uncharacteristical frown on her face as she considered her coworker for a moment of silence. "How was yours?" Had he had his appointment already?
Alysson was a little shaken? Alysson? The Hit Witch? Vic didn't feel so bad for being shaken himself now. He even let out a short exhale of relief. "Yeah. I've just had mine, too. It's... it's crazy. I was diagnosed with at least ten diseases after the Healer started throwing tools at me." He shook his head. "There was something wrong with her, I'm positive. So unstable, not a tinge of sense in her."

... "Maybe we should file an official complaint about that." Hmm? Alysson seemed unsatisfied with her inspection as well. "I was on my way to Emily's to tell her that."

Vanishing the mirror with a flick of her wand, Alysson listened to Vic's reply. Yes. She was somewhat glad that the Healer hadn't just been like that with her. But then also not because it meant that there really WAS something seriously wrong with the St. Mungo's staff.

"Mine slapped me." She reached up to rub her cheek absently at the reminder.

An official complaint? Alysson nodded thoughtfully. "Yes." Would Emily believe them? "Did your Healer mention seminars as well?" She'd lowered her voice for no apparent reason, somehow feeling the need to make sure no one overheard them talking.

THAT part had been the most discomforting in a way.

Vic was bewildered at the news of a woman slapping Alysson. Bewildered, I say. "Wow. W-what did you do?" Like, was the Healer still alive? Did he have to go untie her somewhere?

GOOD that she agreed to tell Emily. With him. She must believe them, they weren't some whiny kids over here, they were a Hit Witch who got slapped and a prosecutor who got things thrown at him. They were bullied. Okay, maybe that sounded a little bit whiny.

... seminars, though? He rubbed his chin, thoughtfully, trying to remember that part. He stopped paying attention to what the crazy Healer was saying after she started throwing things at him and making up diseases. "Er, I think so? She mentioned a follow-up, yeah, definitely a seminar too, yeah." He squinted his eyes. "You think there... is something to it? I didn't give much thought to it, I just wanted to escape..." Ahem.

What did she DO? That was a very good question. One Alysson was almost ashamed to answer. "Nothing." Well, she HAD reached for her wand in case the Healer had tried it again but apart from that. "It was...it's still a St. Mungo's Healer, you know?" Which really wasn't a very good explanation. Plus, what COULD she have done? Petrify her and carry her to Emily for inspection? Not a very appealing thought.

Hmm.

Alysson tried very hard not to read into these things but it HAD been very strange. "She prescribed me seminars to heal my illnesses." Which was very strange indeed. And there was something else. "She spoke of being reformed." Did that make any sense to him? She gave him a look that somewhat suggested that she was hoping he had a reasonable explanation for that.

Nothing? Vic couldn't help but feel a little deflated at that, he was expecting something a bit drastic. Like, murder on grounds of self-defense or mentality even. This was how most of that part of MLE took care of things anyway, and then his prosecutors would swoop in and save their butts. Heh. But, well, Alysson seemed to be one of the sane ones. "Yeah. I kept my wand in my hand at all times when she got that awful green bubbly liquid in a needle." He shuddered just thinking of it.

Seminars were just... eh. But reformed? Vic frowned at that and leaned on the wall with his hand slipping into his pants' pocket. "Reformed. That doesn't sound promising in any case scenario. Especially if we consider the person who said it to you." This was worth looking into. "I think we need to go see Emily." That visit was sounding more and more needed. "I don't remember her saying something like that to me. Which one was your healer? Red hair?"

Vic certainly looked disappointed.

To be honest, in retrospect, Alysson now hoped she'd done more too. Not attack the woman or anything of course. But at least arrest her on the grounds of suspecting her to be a fraud. Because, again, if she WASN'T then St. Mungo's had some serious problems. "A needle?" Wait what? Alysson blinked in surprise. Had she used the needle on him as well?

Judging by the fact that he looked healthy she probably hadn't.

And he didn't have a good explanation either. Alysson sighed, now looking somewhat worried. No, not just somewhat. She simply looked worried. Her eyes briefly flicked back to the door that had led her in here. Should they go back? But no. Vic's suggestion was better. "Yes. Yes, we should." See Emily that is.

"Short-" Alysson reached up to demonstrate just how short on her head. "-red hair, yes. She said their boss was called Wandastian Epitaph." Whoever that was. But at least it was SOMETHING.

It wasn't that Vic was scared of needles, pfffffft, nooooo, he was a biiiig boy man, but the green substance in the injection was... unsettling. The sharp end wasn't very reassuring either. So, yes, he might or might not have blanched a little at the image. "Yeah." His hand rubbed at the base of his neck, avoiding Alysson's face.

"Okay, let's go then." He waited for her to lead the way to their lady boss' office. "I think she's the same one." If it was only one Healer that was unstable, then dealing with the issue would be easy and quick. No messes, no need for evidence or even a long investigation. Just a matter of psychological assessment and they'd be set for a winning case. "Red heads are crazy." Pause...

...PANICKED FACE. "I MEAN--" Stupid, idiot, dumb man. "--I mean, they can be feisty and quite unusual." Please don't tell his GF. Please.

Today, he preferred walking over using the lifts. It gave him a chance to stretch his legs and back after several hours of grizzly paperwork. That, and it afforded a bit more understanding of the going-on's of the Ministry than taking the lifts did. Little happened in lifts. Lots happened on stairs. It wasn't exactly like Hollywood portrayed it to be.

Pausing about halfway up, Sabel rested his back against the wall and listened to the footfalls above and below. It was pretty quiet. Traffic was low at this time.

Of all the lessons Genevieve had learned in her years as an Auror, stealth was not one she excelled at. It had to do with her impulsive nature and also because she seldom had a reason to actually be really stealthy.

Which was why, when she was following Dakest on the stairs, having noted his rather uncanny insistence on avoiding the lift, Genevieve didn't worry too much about not being noticed. He'd notice. Dakest might be dirty, but he wasn't bad at his job.

He had noticed the footfalls some time ago and had been tracking them, ensuring that he was indeed being followed. Now, stopped where he was, there was no doubt.

But it didn't concern him. He'd been in the field long enough to be able to distinguish between a stalking presence, and a tentative one. It did disappoint him, however, especially when he saw Genevieve's familiar face appear around the corner.

"I expected I would have a tail at some point." Sabel said quietly, tucking his hands in his pockets as he rested his shoulderblades against the wall. "Wasn't sure who it would be, though. Have to say, I'm...disappointed."

Disappointed and disheartened that it was one of his own. That it wasn't a reporter or another ministry member. No, it was one of the MLE. He couldn't fault her for it, really. She was, after all, just doing her job and what she thought was required.

"Is it on orders or your own suspicions?"

"I'm not tailing you. You think you'd catch me following you on the stairs if I was trying to be sneaky?" Genevieve wasn't going to be taken in by the hurt big brother act. She had two blood siblings, two adopted ones, and a slew of cousins, so hurt feelings as a defense mechanism didn't work on her.

Much. Being accused of trying to be stealthy and failing worked wonders on her, though.

"I'll try to be someone more exciting next time I follow you around the building, okay? Maybe be less of a disappointment to you." She pulled herself up to sit on the railing, an act of trust, really, since a shove would send her plummeting to her death. "I'm suspicious, but Legend says he trusts you. And I trust him. So we make an uneasy truce. What do you think... Prophet is lying, Rainey is dirty... or someone else is? What are we supposed to believe?"

The knowing smile he gave his fellow MLEr said it all. He would have caught her sneaking, one way or the other. Stealth or not. Just as he suspected she would have caught him, if their roles were reversed. It was part of their instinct, as Aurors, to know when something was wrong. He doubted she would have graduated the YATI program if she didn't have it.

He made a noise of acknowledgement as he watched her prop herself up. Disappointment that she wasn't exciting? No. Disappointment that it was one of the MLE's own? Most definitely. But her actions weren't on an order, which gave him some relief. Suspicions, at this point, were warranted.

"You're asking me, for my opinion." There was a certain irony in that, but he appreciated it. Meant there was a willingness to trust, even if it was a degree removed. "Legend is a smart man, and a good friend. He's a wise alliance to have."

So what did he believe? His eyes returned to her, his slight smile grim. "I believe that someone is trying to tear the MLE apart. Whether it is the Cult returning, or another moving hand. The MLE is the golden gate into the ministry. If it crumbles because of poor mortar, well...." He shrugged. The rest was obvious.

"Transparency is not often an option for those of us in our Division. And, there are more than a handful of people who hate us enough to use that against us. So, as for what we are supposed to believe?" A much simpler answer. "Cautionary trust." He nodded to her, to the way she was sitting, to the trust she was demonstrating to him by doing so. "And that the best lies, are crafted from partial, twisted truths."

There wasn't really anything out of the norm with Dakest's response. Find who they could trust, suss out the truth, trust nothing that couldn't be substantiated from a better source than the Daily Prophet. Genevieve wasn't disappointed, considering how unlikely it was that a fellow Auror would suggest they toss Rainey into a dark cell and set up an immediate perimeter on the Minister.

Actually, the perimeter wasn't a bad idea. Hmm.

"But tearing apart the MLE suggests that the threat is from the outside, that our biggest concern is some force trying to get us to turn on each other. But if there are traitors in our midst, those concern me more than my temporarily doubting your trustworthiness." And see that? That was her only acknowledgement that they'd had a wavering between them.

"Cautionary trust of who, though? The rest of the team? Our Department Head? The Minister?" She flapped one hand, the other wrapped around the railing to keep herself from falling head over heels. Literally. "I think we need to clear a path through the place, figuring out who we can trust and pulling them in to help as we go."

"Don't forget, that those on the outside can easily find their way inside." The smile Sabel gave Genevieve was even grimmer than his last one. There was some genuine appreciation to it, a hint of it in his eyes. Really, that he was on the good books with this Auror, gave him a great deal of comfort. The voice of the Prophet was hardly the loudest, and she was right, it's lies were hardly their greatest concern.

In fact, she had touched on the same thing that had begun to whisper at the back of his mind. That there was something in the Prophet, some underlying warning within the lies, that foreshadowed a true danger. It left a bad taste in his mouth, and he suspected that was really what had him so intolerant of the article.

"I don't know about traitors, over loud mouths, but someone is leaking information. Or the walls have grown ears." Resting his head back against the wall, he listened to distant footfalls for a moment. "So, to answer your question. Cautionary trust of everyone. Co-workers, Rainey, the Minister."

He pulled his head forward and considered the dark shadows of the stairwell. "Until our department can learn discretion. But if we react strongly and visibly to this, we rise to their beck and call. If we do react, it has to be discrete." And given some things in that article seemed to have come out of thin air, he wasn't sure that was possible.

Scrubbing the back of his neck, Sabel returned his gaze back to Genevieve. "I received a warning from an old colleague that a storm was coming. The Cult was never fully apprehended, Peverell has left no question as to his distaste for us and the general public fears us. We have a lot of enimies, so we have to be cautious in our trust, but we also have to watch each other's backs. Especially those targets mentioned in the article."

The bad taste was back again and his mouth twisted around it. "The Prophet has named victims already, and if this is an attack on the MLE, or the Ministry, whoever is behind this, if they are anyone of consequence, may have done so to line up a good set of scapegoats."

"I recognize outsiders. I don't recognize those inside who work for outsiders," Genevieve slipped off the railing and paced the short distance of the landing. Sitting still had never been her gift, and she was restless to move. Root out the evil, find the traitors, make things go back to safe and happy. Trouble inside the Ministry bled outside the doors and stained her regular life too, and Genevieve hated that her family was impacted by all of this.

"What's true... in that article?" She turned at the wall and gave Dakest big eyes. She wasn't really sure that she wanted to know the ways that her dream job was dimmed. She was a realist, though, which meant no ignoring the problem. "I think I need to know what's real and what isn't, don't you?"

It bothered her that he had an outside source, that he'd been warned. Why not share his concerns with everyone? "You're a victim, you mean. Like it or not, the Prophet went after you specifically. Is that personal, or are you targeted on purpose?"

Despite the seriousness of their conversation, Sabel couldn't help the soft smile that had taken over his expression. It wasn't condescending, in fact, it was just the opposite. This one was a good egg. Hopeful, but not deluded by dreams. Positive, but not naively ignorant. She had the makings of a good Auror.

"You do, but I'm not sure I can provide all the answers you are looking for." He let out a breath and shrugged his shoulders somewhat helplessly. "The only real truth I can tell you is about myself, and that the article has twisted my service with the MLE. My 'convenient' return? I was working on long-term assignments, undercover. All assignments for the MLE, for the Ministry." He shrugged again. "As a key player? The Cult had a thing against many in the MLE, myself included. I worked alongside the department head at that time, and the others, to help take down I'signy and Geverik. And I wish we had caught them all. That's it."

Was that enough truth for her? Was that enough to show that the article couldn't be trusted? It depended. On if she trusted his words.

Tucking his hands in his pockets, he rested his head back against the wall and turned his eyes away from her. "I'm afraid, that's all I can say for sure. In regards to Rainey, to the Cult returning, I don't know. I hope it's not true, but I'm not jumping to any conclusions. The Prophet has earned no favors of my trust."

His gaze returned to her, considering her quietly for a long moment. "I was referring to Legend and Aron. Rainey and I are...convenient scapegoats should, Merlin forbid, something happen to them." He supposed that was still a 'victim' in a manner of speaking, but he was more concerned about the actual victims identified. "So, it seems to me more convenient and purposeful, than personal."

But then again, perhaps he was wrong. But if it was a personal attack, there were other, easier ways to get to him than his credibility with the MLE. Either way, her questions did a good job stirring up the unease in his gut again.

"In any case, I think you would be wise to be cautious in placing too much weight in the attempts to discredit our department. Especially attempts so poorly founded."

It was nice to have some of the pieces fit together, whether it helped Genevieve to understand the Prophet's version of the truth or just for her to understand the inner workings of Dakest better. Unfortunately, it didn't resolve their issue at hand, which continued to frustrate the blond Auror. She paced the landing twice before speaking again.

"I'm not great at being cautious, and I'm not keen on waiting to see what's real and what isn't. I think we need at least a tentative course of action. At the very least, I think we need to form a plan of protection for your victims and for the Minister. Extra protective details, security protocols... passwords, changing up their entrances and exits from the building. I'd feel better if we weren't waiting for the other shoe to drop."

Sabel had to smile a little as he rested against the wall, watching the other Auror pace. It seemed to be a thing with the young ones, although it really hadn't been different when he was their age.

"I don't think that's a bad idea." Parting from the wall, he started them up the stairs at a languid pace. If she wanted to move, best they move. Moving helped thinking. "But I do think it needs to be done silently, and not as an obvious reaction to the Prophet. Can you imagine what they would write if they got wind of it?"

Glancing over at Genevieve, Sabel tucked his hands in his pockets. "You're right though, waiting to see what the next move is, is never a good idea. Would be worth running by Legend."

And Rainey? He remembered Evander's letter and paused on the next step. Probably not. Otherwise, wouldn't Evander have said, or at least hinted at something? The thought made him frown.

Talking for Evaaa/ Logan! <3
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Yes, it was true Jory had spent many a year at the Ministry but that didn't mean he knew everywhere that good. He was not Simon who seemed to know every nook and cranny. Here he was now, going down the spiral staircase from level four where he had spent some time catching up with some friends. The staircase was not one he had used before.

He had better get back to work now. Jory had spent enough time socialising and he was now focusing on what needed to be done when he got back, rearranging more important things that needed taking care of first. The result of him being withdrawn in his head was that he did not notice the other guy trudging up the stairs until it was too late.

BUMP! Jory, very much startled, almost lost his balance as he stumbled backward.

Logan or Lo as his closest family tended to call him was on his way down the spiral staircase balancing a number of important and confidential papers that he needed to deliver to certain people in other departments. He knew he could have sent everything with the inter-department magical mail system but it was a way for him to learn his way around the building and the departments. Given that he wasn't exactly known for his perfect sense of direction it was crucial that he explored around and got his bearings right.

Thinking about what work needed to be done when he got back up to level 3 and trying to determin if he could take a detour to see his sister in Mysteries Logan was not paying attention to where he was going at all. BUMP! Feeling himself collide with someone or something Lo stumbled backwards and lost grip of his papers that flew all over the place as he gasped out "Oooof!".

It was raining papers down on him as he stumbled backwards. Luckily, Jory managed to grab a hold of the rails on the staircase so that saved him from bumping his head. He hauled himself up quickly to look around for the person he had collided with, hoping that he or she hadn't fallen down the stairs. But this was not the case. A good thing too.

"I'm sorry about that,''
the Auror told the unfamiliar face. "I should have watched where I was going. Here, I'll help you get your papers.'' It's the least he could do for inconveniencing the man so he bent and began collecting falling papers, arranging neatly even though they would not be in the order they had been in originally.

As he stumbled backwards in a rain of papers Logan fought to regain his footing. He didn't stop the backwards tumble until he collided with the rail of the staircase. Straightening himself up slowly as he regained his footing Logan spotted what or rather who he had walked into. It was another man and judging by his appearance slightly older than him.

Waving away the apology away he mumbled to the stranger. "I was as much at fault myself. I had my head in the clouds and weren't looking where i was going either." You had to pick your battles. And to Logan it seemed pointless and riddiculous to start one over who had actually stumbled into whom. Bending to retrieve the last of his papers he said as he straightened up. "Thanks for the help. I'm Logan Entienne. I work in Accidents and Catastrophes."

Peace and quiet was all that she required on a daily basis, but working within a mile radius of the others in her department was nothing of the sort. Peace and quiet had never been introduced in their upbringing and she had been trying this new thing... If she had nothing nice to say, then she'd say nothing at all. However, her opinions on parenting had been bubbling all of this week. Roll on the end of the work day where she could go home to two children with impeccable parenting that she could in no way fault.

Eliora had gathered her things from her desk, only those that she knew she would need and left her cubicle. She could work wherever she pleased and so long as she got what she needed to do, then it would be fine. Right? Aron hadn't said she needed to be ready to travel today and Marilyn was on the floor anyway. If there was enough of a catastrophe, Eliora was sure that she would hear the commotion of the TEENAGERS she worked with. Coffee in on hand, paperwork in the other, she had headed toward the darn lifts to seek a quieter level...

HOWEVER.

On the way she'd found heaven in a hole. A stairway. That...was slightly dusty on steps and a little lower lighted than the rest of the Ministry, so she was sure that it would be without a sprinkling of youth.

The hoots she gave were in the negatives... Proven by the fact that Miss Dodderidge had sat herself down onto a step without ensuring it was cleared.

A Poop * k8 *

Ember Brighten soon to be Konstantinova ahem had quite a few books in her arms. She had brought some stuff from the office home to do some OUT OF WORK research on some pestly things--you know, she wanted to stay on top of her job--and was in the process of trying to get them all BACK to her level and on their respective bookshelves.

BUT.

ALAS.SSSSS.

She had gotten out on the WRONG level on the lift. Like...HELLO EMBER. YOU LOON. And now she was just trying to find her way back to the Level Four--but it was proving difficult. And she didn't know how, but she was extremely lost right now. What even was this? A random spiral staircase?! That Ember had NEVER seen before. Peeking over her handful of books, she spotted a woman! A SAVIOR, PERHAPS?

"Um..excuse me but---where the heck IS this?! Are we, I mean?" she asked with a broad friendly and CHEERFUL smile.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.

Someone sounded much too like they had a firecracker of happy in their behind and that was exactly what Eliora had been looking to get away from. Why, when she could escape here, would she need them to FIND her?! She didn't work too closely with them on purpose, in fact..she tried to keep her work to herself unless necessary, really only sharing with Marilyn for Aron's sake. He still needed to get a move on and retire so she could push Rusty to be his successor. And then tell him he needed a woman in his life that wasn't his teenage daughter, and schmoozle all up on that last name of his.

Her future last name. Aha! One day...

"The Ministry of Magic..?" Where else would they be?

Although, this one wasn't one of the children from her department and that was a delight.
