Hogwarts RPG Name: Amber Le'strang First Year | How do they learn before Hogwarts? [Do with what you have] Slytherin Vampiress
This Thread is to answer
ONE SIMPLE QUESTION
and to give your OPINION on it.
All SS rules apply of course.
Well, i've noticed that Wizards and Witches go to Hogwarts for the first time at 11 years of age.
So, how do they learn math and english?
Are they home schooled by their own parents?
I know Harry went to a muggle school, but Ron and the rest of the Weasley's certainly didn't.
Why do you think they go at age 11
and how do they learn before 11?

Well If they don't go to a 'muggle' school, then they'd learn from their parents probably :S good question! Can't really say I know the answer!
They might go at 11 because...it's your first double figures? i don't know the answer to that question either! It may have been randome chioce |

J.K. Rowling said that wizarding children are homeschooled until the age of 11 (that's how all the Weasleys were brought up). Hermione went to a Muggle school, as do all Muggleborns (because their magic doesn't come through until they're about 9 or 10). As for half-bloods, I'm not sure. Depends on what part of the family dominates, I suppose. For instance, Dean Thomas's mother was a Muggle, and his dad was a wizard. But Dean was raised by his mom, so he went to a Muggle school. Why do they only go to Hogwarts at the age of 11? Not sure on that one, but possibly because that's the age at which most children are able to control their magic?

Hmm... maybe
Age 11 might be the age of more proper comprehension
that children learn magic.
So all wizards and witches where home schooled except for the muggleborns and maybe halfbloods.
How about Voldemort?
I know nothing about orphanages but did they have schools there?

Half-bloods and muggleborn probably went to muggle school before they came to Hogwart's, Durmstang or beuxbaton's

I found out somewhere that it isn't compulsory to be able to read and write english before going to Hogwarts. I'm not sure how that would work out, I just remember reading it somewhere.
Venomyz- most children who live in orphanages would go to the local school. So Voldemort would probably have gone to the local primary and middle school as his orphanage sounded too small and cheap to have it's own school, although this was in the 1950's so it might actually have been a lot different back then. Now I don't know.
I think that those from the richer wizarding families (i.e. Malfoys) would get privatly tutored. I can't see Lucius having the patients to teach a 5 year old the alphabet
I agree with Ginny_Weasley_Potter about why they go at 11. It could also be because Hogwarts is a boarding school and it would be unfair to have a boarding school for 8 yr olds, say, they're just no old enough.

yeah, I agree I think the richer families would have private tutors, while less well off families like the Weasley's would probably just home school their kids!
who knows, maybe there is a spell that teaches the abc?? haha

That's one I've always wondered as well. Also, they graduate at 17. But the series references that the schooling system is completely different from the muggle one. After all if you know magic why would you need physics or algebra?
But it's not unreasonable to assume that they have a certain amount of homeschooling or some private schools and tutors to cover this.

I thought that too.. Surely at Hogwarts there must be some normal subjects like maths and english? What if you were magic but didn't do a magical job? Hmm.. If you don't learn any general subjects after primary/grade school you'd be quite dim!

I agree, the muggle born and half bloods went to primary school and the purebloods were taught at home. (Well Draco was most likely tutored)

I'd say they are home schooled, if they have nice parent's and don't live with their evil aunt and uncle(poor Harry) or in a filthy muggle orphanage(poor Tom) as to whether they learn anything about magic before Hogwarts I don't know, maybe they had control of their powers before Hogwart's, Tom Riddle had control of his powers, that's a hard question to answer |

I think they learn if they go to muggle school or if they get taught at home. I think they start at 11 because you know like 5 is way to young. 11 because it makes sense 11 (1st year) 12 (2nd year) etc and they have finished school and they can get a job straight away like we do but we start so much younger and do extra years.

Like everyone else, I think that pureblood wizards will either be taught by their parents or by a private tutor. Though, considering that they will not have much contact with muggles if they are pureblood, it would be unlikely that they would need to learn anything other than English and basic arithmetic before school. Like how to count and add and stuff
As for why they start at eleven, based on this: Quote:

I'd say that the age is eleven because at this point, if your magic hasn't shown up, then you don't have any magical ability. Waiting a year after the usual age for magical...uh...adolescence I guess would be a way to ensure that any late bloomers will be enrolled at the correct time |

I'm thinking they go at 11 because the age sort of corresponds with the year. 1st years: 11 2nd years: 12 3rd years: 13
etc

etc I agree with that. I just makes sense. I also think that they can't start when there 5 or 6 or something cause there too young to learn magic.

pure-bloods would most likely learn from their parents, unless there is some weird, wizarding elementary school
muggle-borns would attend a muggle elementary school, obviously, and learn it that way.
half-bloods would be either, depending on who raises them or who makes the decisions or whatever.
as for the age eleven, im pretty sure thats when you go from elementary school to high school in england. i think. :S dont quote me on that!!
well, that's what me thinks

Their parents and if the parents are non-magical or un-willing the kid had to wait till they are 11 and can go to Hogwarts, I believe thats the bottom line.

I agree that the muggle-borns and halfies went to muggle school (poor things), and that the Pures were home-schooled until they were of age.

Thank goodness somebody else recognized this problem! I thought that maybe there was a sort of college after Hogwarts where, after you graduated, you could go for a while and learn everything that middle school and high school would have provided. Or maybe you just don't need to know that stuff. Perhaps everyone carries around a magical calculator and a Quick Notes Quill.
