Default Detention: Trinetta Gladin

Calvin cleared his schedule then made his way down to the dungeons for one of a series of detentions he would be hosting this week. It was amazing how much busier he'd become with discipline than actual matters of teaching but it needed to be done and with the poor excuses for Professors that still walked the castle, it became all the more important for him to assume the responsibility.

The Divination Professor stood outside the room to the detention cell, thinking this detention would be best served down in dungeon five. He checked his watch. There was still time before the Ravenclaw was considered late.

He leaned against the wall, looking down at the box he carried with him. It didn't bring him much pleasure having to get this nasty business sorted but rules were rules and if they weren't going to be followed then consequences would need to be handed out.

Tonight the dungeon corridor was empty save for himself. It had enough lighting but there was no need for too much. The dungeon would not be held out here. This was merely the first checkpoint.

Not to be dramatic, but this was probably the WORST thing that had ever happened to Nettie.

Looking back on it, she realized how silly her whole plan had been. She had some stupid, childish fantasy that she'd be able to trap the professor - a grown ADULT - in some sort of logic trap, going on about how it was their personal property that they were taking away. Something they had NO RIGHT to. She was right, obviously, but did she think she'd get the older man to actually ADMIT that? When she'd written to Jimmy about it, he'd also reminded her that she was in school - you basically gave up certain rights at school. Something she hadn't thought about.

Now, she was paying the price for her stupidity. She still felt the way she felt about the rules - and she was still going to take a chance to stand up to them, if a BETTER opportunity presented itself, but for now, she had to just keep her head down.

She approached the dungeon where she'd been assigned detention and took a deep breath as she turned the corner. There was Fletcher, waiting for her as she had expected. She didn't say anything as she approached - she just wanted to get this thing over with.

I’m right, you’re wrong. They don’t call me a Seer for nothing.

Fletcher watched the Ravenclaw approach. Patiently waited for her to get to where he stood. All the more patiently waited for a greeting that would not be coming if her silence was indication of anything.

Very well.

The man glanced down at his watch, then over to the locked door they may or may not end up going through at this rate. He spared the young girl a glance before looking to the box again. They could keep this silence up as long as they needed to but it wouldn't be getting her anywhere any time soon.

Was she...supposed to say something? She thought that was forbidden. She had just gotten used to not saying hi to ANYONE, let alone the professors. But when nothing happened, the awkward silence was too much to bear. She cleared her throat, cheeks blushing a bit as she stared at her shoes for a second. She then looked up at him, straightened her shoulders, and put on her brave face again.

"Hello Professor. I'm here for my detention," she told him. That was obvious, yes? So help her, if she lost points for saying hello to him she might just scream...

I’m right, you’re wrong. They don’t call me a Seer for nothing.

Oh look, she speaks.

"A "good evening" would've been preferred, Ms. Gladin." He said, his tone leaning onto the gruff side without being particularly harsh or reproachful. Had he not been here so long, it would astonish him just how poorly students were able to differentiate situations. Lessons were not the same as detentions which were not the same as random passings in the corridor. You'd think the sign that said "classroom rules" would've been enough to help them gauge the context in which some rules applied.

"Good evening." To respond to the questionable greeting she'd given. "Hello" she could save for her friends and the professors who didn't care so much.

"Let's get this over with, shall we? I'll not have you out so late that you break curfew. That being said, if you waste your time here you'll have to return tomorrow." Fair warning, something that even when given seemed to have little effect on some of these students--like the Ravenclaw that stood before him now. She'd been told not to wear jewellery. It was as fair a warning as could be given and yet......here he stood with her necklace in a box.

The man pulled and levitated three smaller boxes from the obviously extended one he'd been holding. "You made a terrible gamble wearing that necklace to my lesson when you knew you shouldn't. I don't know what you were expecting, but if you're in the business of gambling....one of these boxes has your necklace in it. Choose wrong, and it's gone forever. Go on."

Nettie felt like her eyes were going to pop out of head, that's how hard she had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. THAT was what he was going to pick a fight about? Her greeting? SIGH. She could do NOTHING right, could she? "I'm sorry...good evening, Professor," she said quietly. Despite how irritated she was, she wasn't going to let him shake her and bait her in to another detention or loss of house points.

"I understand, sir," she said with a nod. She didn't want to repeat this either. Just like Fletcher, she wanted to put in her time and do this correctly so she wouldn't have to be back and waste more of her time. Instead, she could spend more of her time trying to come up with an idea that wouldn't backfire on her dramatically.

She would never admit that she had been a naive fool, expecting to catch him in some sort of ethical trap - she would admit that to no one. Ever. As far as Fletcher was concerned, if he asked her to actually SAY what she had been thinking, she'd answer that she quite simply hadn't been.

Wait, was this all she had to do? No lines? No workouts? She had imagined all sorts of scenarios in her head, and this was definitely not one them. All she had to do was pick a box? Fletcher probably thought this was some huge punishment, when in reality - it wasn't.

"This one," she said, pointing to the left box.

Fletcher waited, his expression giving nothing away until after the girl made her choice. The left one? "Tough luck on that one." He said, tapping the box and watching it fold open. Empty. The other two boxes he set on fire, taking a moment to watch them burn before vanishing what remained. "Guess you won't be getting it back afterall. In any case, let's begin."

The man turned to the door and shouldered it open.

Inside the Ravenclaw would find what looked like an obstacle course of sorts. The room was bigger on the inside than it was from the outside. To the far left end was what looked strangely similar to a water mill that turned water over and over. On the opposite end stood a trough, an empty one. In between was a structure that needed climbing over; it stood 6 ft high but had a slope on both end so it could be walked up then down, tires that needed running through, and a set of 7 steps that led to the trough.

By the trough was an empty bucket.

"Fill the trough, then you can go. I don't suppose I have to tell you that you must go through the obstacles. I don't recommend spilling even a drop." Just saying.

There was no love lost in Nettie's heart when she saw the other two boxes burn up. She looked up at him and just shrugged. Oh well. She was sure that would irritate the man, who was probably certain he had just delivered a stunning blow to her. Did he really think she'd have worn something that meant a lot to her if she knew it could get taken away? Please.

When she walked in and saw the obstacle course in front of her, however, her heart dropped a bit. Specifically when she saw that tall wall. Um, had he SEEN her? She barely broke 5 feet tall. Even going over it with the ramp was going to be a feat for her. Although that was probably all part of his plan. Confidence she had gained a few moments ago was all but gone now. She looked at him, wrinkling her blonde eyebrows.

"What if I DO spill a bit?" she asked. She wouldn't do it on purpose of course but - physics had never been in her favor, really.

In truth, the shrug had gone entirely unnoticed by the man who was already moving into the room but he’d have been neither here nor there about it. It was contraband, he got rid of it. That was the extent of his interest in the matter.

With a lazy swish of his wand, the man conjured a chair and deposited himself in it. Now it was his turn to shrug. “The water in the bucket evaporates and you have to go get more.” Nothing too fancy there, just extra work on top of the work he had planned for her. “Hand over your wand then get the bucket and begin. You must pass through each obstacle.” A necessary statement as there was enough room for her to simply walk around.

“Get cracking, we don’t have all night.” He would busy himself with grading. It seemed of late that detentions were were he got most of his work done.

Hmph. Of course. Sighing heavily, Nettie nodded in understanding and then walked over to the empty bucket, picking it up. It was already rather heavy - she couldn't even imagine how heavy it would be once she got water in it.

She walked over to the little...water wheel...thing and began to fill the bucket. She paused and only filled it about halfway. She didn't want to fill it too high and have it start spilling out over the side. That would just mean that she would have to start over and waste her time. This seemed much more sensible.

Taking her bucket of water, she headed to the first obstacle. Taking a deep breath, she began to climb up the ramp, walking slowly and steadily over the ramp. Higher and higher she went, holding on to the bucket for dear life as she reached the top. She felt like she was walking a tight rope as she walked over the barrier, then slowly started down the ramp. This was even harder than going up...one false step and she wouldn't just fall, but could seriously injury herself and twist an ankle or something.

Once she felt the cool dungeon floor again, she let out a sigh of relief and then turned to the tires. This was easy - she had done these drills at Quidditch camp! It was a little difficult with her little legs, but she managed to make it through in pretty good time. Still, no water had fallen out of her bucket. Sure, she'd have to take more trips, but she'd rather do that than possibly spill and have zero to show for her efforts.

Now for the stairs. This was easy enough as well...she slowly and carefully climbed up the stairs, balancing her bucket with care as she made it to the trough. She smiled and emptied the water into the trough, grinning as she watched it fill up...

Except that wasn't much to show for her efforts. The downside of her only-fill-the-bucket-halfway plan. Maybe she'd do just a BIT more next time. Yes, she was going to get the hang of this. With each go through the obstacle she was sure she would become more practiced and better at it...

As she made her way through the obstacles, Calvin barely spared a glance up at her. Measures had been put in place to ensure all his instructions were followed and should she decide to skip around the obstacles even once she would find little jolts of electricity running up her legs. Just enough to get her back on the right track.

The sound of her footsteps told him she'd completed one trip and it was enough for the man to glance up. It would be interesting to see her reaction when it happened, whatever the reaction was.

Just after the last of the bucket had hit the trough, it all seemed to........evaporate. Though that was not necessarily the case, by all indications the water she'd just trudged across the room to put there was now gone.

Oblivious to what had happened, Nettie had already begun to head back to get the next bucket. This was only going to get easier with each trip, she assumed, and she was eager to get this stupid task done with. She headed to the ramp in the middle and carefully made it up and over, just as she had done before. This time, she had gone a bit faster. She was still not spilling any of her water, having only taken half a bucket as she had done previously as well.

Now on to the tires. This was the easiest part of her. Hop hop hop! She got to the end and triumphantly headed up the stairs and... stopped just before she emptied her bucket.

Where had all the water gone?!

She...she had definitely done this once, right? She hadn't imagined that? Yes, she wasn't a complete loon. There had been WATER there. She had watched it fill up, and apparently as soon as she had turned her back, it had all disappeared. What kind of sick game was this? And all for wearing a necklace? Merlin. She hated to see what kind of hell awaited the students who mouthed off or skipped the SORE runnings.

Nervously, she carefully poured the bucket she'd carried successfully through the maze in to the trough once more. This time, she didn't run off right way. She stayed, making sure the water stayed put this time...

If only looking was enough to ensure the water remained where she had poured it.

Calvin looked up at the silence or rather the absence of her footsteps heading back to collect more water. The water she’d so dutifully carried once again seemed to disappear before her very eyes leaving a empty, dry trough. It was as if nothing had happened. Not even a droplet could be seen at the very bottom.

He didn’t need to be standing next to her to know this, he’d charmed it himself. Once again he turned silently to his marking, expecting she knew she was meant to keep going.

He hadn’t given the instruction for her to stop and wouldn’t wait the entire night for her to begin again.

Anger boiled up inside the young Ravenclaw as she watched all her hard work go down the drain - quite literally, it seemed. She took a deep breath and resisted every urge in her body to glare at the professor and throw the bucket down in a huff. What exactly was the point of this?! He'd already poofed her necklace in to thin air, and was making her do menial labor - but he had to add an extra bit of salt to the wound with this?

She took another deep breath and picked up the bucket, turning and heading towards the beginning of the obstacle course once again. Ok. Fine. If he was going to be that way she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction. She picked up her bucket and filled it up, walking slower than she had the last few times and heading to the ramp.

She had no where to be. If he wanted to waste both their nights with this, then she would be more than happy to oblige. He wasn't going to get her to cave in and throw a tantrum. Nope. After heading up the ramp, she slowly came back down and went over to the tires again. Instead of hopping from tire to tire she simply stepped slooooowly through each one. Taking her time and not spilling a drop.

Then, slowly up the stairs - and she dumped the water in, waiting to see what would happen this time.

She could continue the cycle of dumping the water than waiting to see if it stayed for as long as she wanted but it wouldn’t make the water stay anymore than the initial effort to get it there. Regardless, the water would recede....for a while anyway.

The man had no plans for the evening that he couldn’t get done right here while he waited around with her. There was nothing to prompt him along in any hurry.

Finding nothing noteworthy, he turned to his previous preoccupation once more, hoping she’d notice that with each second the water from the little mill was receding. She’d better go collect it before it was all gone. Believe it or not, it did make some amount of difference and she was wasting the time she didn’t have.

Was he SERIOUS?

Nettie was fighting serious urges to have a full on temper tantrum and throw the bucket across the room. She wouldn't do that, though - not just because she was afraid she'd be stuck here forever, but because she also didn't want to cave in and give him the satisfaction. He was probably WAITING for her to snap like that, and nope. She would not do it, no matter how frustrated she was getting.

And yes, she was getting VERY frustrated.

Fine, maybe she could play this from another angle. Instead of walking back, she broke in to a light jog. She filled the bucket again, taking note that the water was starting to recede a bit. Well, if she didn't get a whole lot of water in to the trough, what was he going to do? HE was controlling it. She couldn't complete his silly little task if he kept rigging it against her. Deciding not to worry about things she couldn't control at this point, she took the bucket and started another slow job to the ramp.

Up she went, across, and down - nearly stumbling a bit as she crossed the top. But she caught herself, taking her Quidditch skills for that one, before continuing onward. She hopped through the tires at record speed, and then ran up the stairs to the trough and dumped her bucket in.

Then, she didn't wait to see what happened. She turned and ran back to the beginning, determined to see if her new change of pace had any impact on her success here...

I’m right, you’re wrong. They don’t call me a Seer for nothing.

The occasional glance up to ensure she stuck to task was all the Divination man spared for the Ravenclaw. He'd set the system up, he knew what would happen and when. By his watch's count, it was about time to give this activity a change of pace.

After adding the latest "T" to the parchments he was grading, Calvin looked up with a lazy sort of gaze. He suspected she must have gotten a few trips done in the time it'd taken him to get through the last 6...no it was 7--Merlin he needed a break--parchments. The trough didn't show any signs of her work but the water mill was steadily coming to it's end.

"I apologize, Ms. Gladin, but I've changed my mind." His tone betrayed the insincerity in his apology. With a flick of his wand, all the water she'd transported (and then some) appeared in the trough. It was nearly full now. "After some thought, I'd like you to move the water from the trough to the mill instead. It's looking a little empty, wouldn't you agree?" She didn't need to answer that.

"Get to it. You know what to do." And with that he turned to his grading again.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie was about to protest that she COULDN'T do that, because HELLO - the trough was EMPTY - but then she realized that he had charmed it and all the water she'd moved had reappeared. Oh. Well, that was good at least. Hopefully this meant they were at the halfway point of this awful evening.

Nodding to show she understood, she took her bucket and filled it from the trough. She carefully carried it down the stairs, and then through the tires. She went up the far side of the ramp this time, carefully made her way across, and went back down. Then, she approached the water mill and slowly dumped the bucket of water in to it. She didn't stop to see if it stayed or not, and instead just headed back to the trough to start again.

While he hadn't paid as much attention to the Ravenclaw during the course of the detention so far, the man seemed particularly....interested now. So much so that he lowered his current homework parchment to give her his full attention. Patiently, the man waited for her to get done pouring the water. Graciously he even allowed her to turn before...

"Oh. I've changed my mind mind. Scoop that water back up and bring it back to the trough." He waved a lazy hand in gesture. "Hurry up, you wouldn't want the water you've just delivered to entirely vanish. Get to it."

Terribly indecisive, wasn't he?

Shame that. It was hard to tell when he'd be of a mood for something else. She would just remain prey to his whims until he decided detention was over. Weren't detentions just terrible?
