Default Entry Chamber

The Department of Mysteries is a section of the Ministry of Magic that carries out confidential and labyrinthine research, and much like the concepts studied here, it is perhaps the most confusing to navigate. There is no main corridor and therefore no reception desk nor receptionist. Instead there lies a circular chamber circular room with a dark marble floor that looks almost like standing water. Floating candles emitting a cool blue light illuminate the room with an eerie glow. Whenever a door closes, the walls rotate, making it impossible to determine which door is which. For those who have business within the Department, all one must do is speak the name of the Chamber or Room with which said business is and the room will guide you - spinning until the appropriate door stops directly in front of you. It is not uncommon that visitors to the Department will walk through the door only to find themselves right back where they started and may need to wait for an Unspeakable to pass by to assist as this Spinning Room is known to have a mind of its own.

OOC: this is a PUBLIC thread. All Ministry employees and visitors are welcome to RP here and have creative license (within reason) over the Spinning Room. It is not uncommon that the room enjoys pulling the leg of non-Unspeakables, however. If your character is here to visit with a Mysteries employee, you can feel free to post on through to the appropriate area. Please keep in mind that due to the secretive nature of the Department of Mysteries that their may be severe consequence IC for entering certain Chambers and Rooms that are not PUBLIC. Please contact the Department Head if you have concerns or questions.

All visitors to the Department of Mysteries may find it a bit of a struggle to reach the Entry Chamber as they walk along the long hallway as an unusual pull occurs, causing anyone passing by to unwillingly walk backwards (unless turned back towards the lifts) and may even find themselves pulled and trapped up against the Northern wall of the corridor.

Laurel took the lift down Mysteries after spending the morning outside the buildng meeting people who believed they had seer gift's. As it happened one person was missinformed and the other had potential but not enough practice. So now the blond woman that was approaching 40 enetered the Mysteries entry chamber intending to get some paper work done. This shifting chamber was a bit scary Laurel had to admit to herself as she stood there alone. She didn't like it when room's shifted around. All she had to do was say where she wanted to go and the chamber would do the rest?

The walk down to the entry chamber was a fairly straight shot and usually unpopulated. So Adam had kept his support stick folded up in his jacket. His black hair was still a bit orange around the edges and one eyebrow was growing back behind his big over-sized purple sunglasses. And so, for the first time in about a year, Adam trundled down the hallway, whistling softly to himself, not being accompanied by the tap-tap-tappity-tap of his white support cane.

As he approached the round-spinny chamber, something started to take focus in front of him. The sunglasses helped hide his blue glowing eyes, but due to the darkness in the room, it made it hard to see. Pushing the glasses up on his forehead, Adam squinted and shuffled into the entryway.

“Ah,” Adam said, as the faint outline of Laurel took shape. She had a teal-ish outline around her. Adam had discovered that, as his eyesight [very slowly] came back, people had a faint color around them. ”Laurel, how are you totay?” He came to a stop next to her. ”Has zee room stopped spvinning yet?”

The room DID indeed come to a stop, but not at the request of either of the Unspeakables present. Rather it did so so that the department head could make his grand exit from within the labyrinth that was the Department of Mysteries. Presently with some business to attend to on Level 3, Airey Flamsteed carried several rolls of duplicated parchments as he stepped out from one of the doors into the Entry Chamber where he was pleased to see Adam and Laurel.

"Ah, salutations," he greeted the pair with a salute from one of the rolls of parchment. "Everything go well out there, Laurel?" he inquired to be polite. He...was still skeptical about the whole Hall of Prophecy and all that business, though the occasional tea with Calista reminded him that he was capable of being unbiased.

As to Adam, well, the astronomer did have some business to attend to with him as well. in due time. Not was not the opportune moment to discuss salaries. "Adam. Looking...........alive, I see."

Laurel was not a fan of this spinning entry chamber at all. Why couldn't Airey have installed a regular lift? Sigh, she was about to ask the chamber to take her to the Prophecy division when Adam shuffled into view in the entryway. Pushing some blond hair out of her blue eyes as Adam came to a stop next to her Laurel greeted kindly. "Hello Adam, I'm all right, how are you?" Shaking her head she replied "No, it hasn't! Is there a trick to make the chamber stop spinning faster?"

Salutations??? Who even said that unless it was for a celebration? Well Airey was a character so Laurel just left it at that. Smiling at her boss she greeted "Hello Airey," she thought over her answer before she replied. "It went as I predicted it go. The girl had true seer potential while the boy sadly was a prankster out to make fun of the noble art of seering. I got quite unhappy with him."

He himself had never heard 'salutations' uttered at a celebration so he would not know. It was more than a bit of an outdated term, but the astronomer had never been exactly hip and up to date with kids these days. Or any day for that matter.

But if it went as she had PREDICTED it would go...why even bother to investigate the boy? So many things that Airey did not understand nor buy into - not that he particularly wished to.

Noble art of seeing. Right.

"Ah, well. I look forward to reading the report later." A pleasantry, yes. Though he was keen to continue to facilitate the education of these young and old seers. Even with his doubts in regards to the validity of this ability, there was no mistaking the suffering some of them experienced.

Checking his sundial watch, the department head opted to send a patronus over to level 3 instead of making his way all the way there himself. He would use Ministry memos...but a patronus was more to the point and used less paper. So it was that the man flourished his wand and sent the silvery roadrunner on its way.

Adam’s hearing detected a hiss, click, whoosh and then heard a door open as the room came to a stop. He couldn’t see who had exited the door, but could see am orangey-brown blob moving towards him. It was either his boss or Cypress. They were the only ones in the department that produced that particular color combo.

” I’m ok. Nothing had plovn up in mein face yet,”he said to Laurel. The last time he was at work, there was a series of mini problems in the potions lab that had caused the orange-tinge to his hair and the missing eyebrow. It had been nothing terrible and nothing a few simple cleaning spells hadn’t been able to clear up, but it had been just another knot in the long chain of bad luck that seemed to follow Adam around. “I don’t zink zere is,” Adam said in response to Laurel’s question.

The color also became a bit russet and a voice broke into their conversation as Airey came closer. ”Ja,” Adam responded to Airey’s statement. After all, what does one say to being told they looked ‘alive?’ Sure he had had a series of unfortunate events, but you can’t let the bad things get you down. Right? There are more important things in life then a few mishaps…like food and blooming roses and a piano concerto and stew and snow and fresh baked bread and peonies. ” Vile I haffe your attenzion zir, zee pozions schtore is getting low on Chineze chombing capages, flitderploom root, und Halivinkles.” That was, so long as somebody didn't put the ingredients back in the wrong spot. It wasn't exactly like Adam could read labels very well at the moment.

Laurel sensed that Airey had his doubt’s about seering and the validity of the ability of predicting the future. He hadn’t been won over yet. She was certain that she could get him to see that true predictions all though rare happened. Nodding Laurel responded. "You’ll have the report on your desk later today boss." She paused as she watched Airey’s silvery roadrunner patronus left for another part of the ministry. When the patronus had dissipated Laurel asked curiously "If you don’t mind me asking boss, but did you take Divination classes in your school days?"

Adam was a peculiar colleague with his German accent and bad eye sight. Laurel had not really gotten the grasp of who Adam was but she knew that he was kind. Furrowing her brow’s at his comment she couldn’t keep herself from asking "Do stuff usually blow up in your face Adam?" In what division did Adam work? It was definitely not in the prophecy chamber at least. Laurel got the answer to her question when she heard what Adam asked Airey about but it peeked her curiosity and made her ask herself. "Potions store? Do you experiment with potions?"

It hadn’t taken long for Dylan to realize that the Ministry wasn’t very different from Hogwarts. Except for the fact that the people at the Ministry came from even more foreign places, at times. Luckily, she’d always been a quick study, and her time at university had helped too. Even if she hadn’t focused on anything international, or at least not specifically. Plus, she was getting the distinct feeling that her fellow Unspeakables were even more unique than the rest of the Ministry. Either way, she was adapting the best she could.

As such, she’d made her way back to Level Nine after a quick snack in the food court, having made certain that she wasn’t going to run afoul of any suspicious magic as best she could (aware of the reports from the previous minister’s reign, as well as everything she’d experienced at Hogwarts), finding her way to the entry chamber rather unobstructed and expecting to find it spinning as usual. Except…it wasn’t, and she’d paused at the sight of the three already inside. Her boss, the former Professor Vance, and another Mysteries employee. The thought that she really ought to have done a lot more mingling at the orientation party flickered through her mind, followed by a moment of wondering exactly how long it was going to take her to stop thinking of her boss as Professor Flamsteed and her coworker as Professor Vance, but she’d found herself walking nearer rather quickly.

“Blown up?,” she echoed softly, catching the tail end of the discussions.

Sam was back at work, and although the cause of their transformations had been discovered, she was still a bit paranoid. She saw her Department Head quite quickly (since she didn't recognize everyone present), and greeted them with a small smile and nod, and "Sir," to her DH. His attention was needed by another though, and Sam smiled at the new (maybe?) Mysteries associates.

Patronus sent, Airey could only hope - expect, rather, - that Maddox was truly good for his word. It could be a bit dodgy when it came to that man.

His attention was easily turned back to the assembled Unspeakables, namely Adam who was speaking to the the state of the ingredients storeroom. "I assume a healer cleared you for work then," he inquired a bit dryly. The department could not afford more situations after the black hole and there was a certain standard to be had by Unspeakables and the quality of their work. If the man's current physical situation was prohibiting his efficiency, well, Airey had no problem providing him with a bit of paid leave. Adam deserved a promotion anyway. It was a memo on his desk to attend to later. "Check with Level 4 for all those," he instructed. "I'm sure Miss Clarke has more than enough in her greenhouses and if not she will ensure that she does in the near future." That was a part of that department's purpose, after all. To provide the Ministry with potions ingredients.

Forget-me-not blue eyes now dividing his attention towards Laurel, the astronomer could not help but raise a brow at her inquiry. "I did." He had tested out each subject at Hogwarts during his time there just to see what sort of intellectual stimulus it did - or in this case did not - provide. "There is a reason I trust the handling of the sensitive material in the Hall of Prophecy to the Unspeakables assigned there," he added diplomatically.

The arrival of one of his former student now turned employee naturally did not go unnoticed. He would almost be amused to know that they shared similar sentiments on the situation. Almost. "The experimental nature of the Department of Mysterious can result in explosive conclusions, Miss Chambers." Though his words could have also been directed to Laurel who, as a former professor at Hogwarts, ought to know just how easily accidents could occur. "Why one must always be prepared and on one's toes. Constant vigilance." To quote another famous Gryffindor.

.....sir. Sweet solstice.

"Airey, Mr. Flamsteed, or......" He paused for a long moment, not particularly keen on being referred to as such but he supposed he preferred it over sir. ".....boss, will suffice," he politely corrected Forrester before checking his sundial watch again. He was going to make an official summons for the department using the announcement tome...but there were more than enough capable hands on deck. It would give him an opportunity to examine the constitution of these new Unspeakables as well as seeing how some of his veteran employees took lead. Particularly Forrester being the on-site Nousist. Perhaps Garrick would also be back from assignment to led her knowledge to the task as well. "I am hoping someone from Accidents and Catastrophes will be joining us shortly. I would like for you. I would like for you five to accompany me to the Thought Chamber. There is a pressing matter to attend there with the maintenance of Encephalons."

”Ja,” Adam said out of the corner of his mouth, in answer to both of the questions. Explosions were, after all, a hazard of the job. As were burns, cuts, temporary loss of hearings, smell, and eyebrows. Didn’t everyone in the Department of Mysteries have a work-related hazard they had to deal with? And he didn’t mean Cyrpress’s bad breath or exploding stars that blinded people and tried to eat them.

Another person arrived and Adam began having trouble detecting the smaller things that allowed him to locate people and colors. It was suddenly a cacophony of sounds and lights. He pushed his big over-sized purple sunglasses back down over his glowy blue eyes and nodded in the new employee’s direction. Only….he nodded in the wrong direction.

”Courze,” he said simply. Right? Hadn’t he? He’d been to the healers so often lately. Which incident was he referring to? The star explosion-sight loss many post event healing sessions or the potion explosion? ” Zey zaid zey vould zend en ovl.” At least he thought they had. English wans’t his first language after all and it was a very very odd and hard to understand language. He put on a big cat-like smile. When in doubt, smile. Yup that was Adam’s motto.

”Ooo car trip,” he said in response to checking with Level 4. ”Vho vants to choin me? he asked his fellow lingering employees. Only…It appeared the car trip would have to wait.

”Lead on kood cabdain,” Adam said to Airey as he reached into his jacket to retrieve his support cane. With a click, clack, clink he shook it out and locked it into place. He didn’t know anyone here well enough to snag an elbow for guidance and he had a feeling he was going to need help navigating. He hadn’t been in the Thought Chamber often enough to know how to get around in it sans eyes.

Level nine.

Megan rarely ventured there in all of her years working at the Ministry. The only exceptions happened to be when the Department required her help. The work done down here always made her curious though she wasn’t one to pry in their business. As it was, she was a tad familiar with the floating candles and there being no receptionist. The creepy light made her wrap her arms around herself; it was a reflex act of self-protection.

Now, where was Flamsteed?

He would be meeting her here so there was no Room’s name that she had to speak in order to reach him. Probably he was running late. Maybe he was lurking around here somewhere. “Mr. Flamsteed?” There was nothing like good old fashioned calling to get his attention.

Adam was perhaps the worst and the best representation of the work done in the Department of Mysteries, and the former Hogwarts professor found himself amused at the thought. On the one hand, Adam was devoted to his work and not afraid of getting his hands dirty - literally and figuratively - in the complex and influential research being done here. Potioneers in particular had an increased probability of things going a bit...astray. Most of the time this resulted in rather large KABOOMs. Laurel and Miss Chambers would be relieved to know that the Hall of Prophecy was soundproofed, among other necessary enchantments to protect the orbs, and likely be left unawares to such....shall we call them hiccups?

Hiccups.

And speaking of hiccups.

Airey was just about to instruct everyone to head into the Thought Chamber when Megan finally made her appearance - and apparently could not see any of them standing there. Had the Spinning Room learned a new trick with disillusionment he had not been aware of? One could never be too sure when it came to the department. Everything seemed to have a mind of it's own.

"Ah, THERE you are," he proclaimed as he waved the level three employee over. "Now that we are all present and accounted for," he nodded, as though this had been the plan all along. "All of you will follow me to the Thought Chamber. Oh and...wands out just to be safe." So it was with a mischevious sort of wink that the department head turned towards the chamber proper and spoke loud and clearly. It could be a bit like traveling by floo with this room. "Department Head, Airey Flamsteed. Unspeakables. Adam Gerulf, Laurel Vance, Sam Forrester, and Dylan Chambers. And Accidents and Catastrophes employee, Megan Baines. All to the Though Chamber."

The room suddenly began to spin rapidly and came to a sudden halt a few moments later, presenting a dark door to the assembled. "This way then," he grinned in a sing-song tone as he retrieved his own wand from his enchanted breast pocket and strolled confidently forward through the door and into the Thought Chamber.

OOC: feel free to declone your character from here and then post in the Thought Chamber

"Ah, THERE you are," he proclaimed as he waved the level three employee over. "Now that we are all present and accounted for," he nodded, as though this had been the plan all along. "All of you will follow me to the Thought Chamber. Oh and...wands out just to be safe." Laurel was silent for a moment, considering Airey’s answer before she responded with an explanation for her questions. "Im glad to hear that you know what your talking about boss and why our work with handling sensitive orbs is important. I’ve met a number of people in boss positions over the years that haven’t taken divinatory matters seriously at all.” It had made her so enraged that Laurel had thought many times that she would spit out flaming tarot cards at the ignorant people.

That Mysteries had its own lab for potion experiments was news to her but she knew too well from her time at Hogwarts that the potion brews could get explosive results. How many times hadn’t she cleaned up after potions messes in the slytherin dorms? Adam seemed from Airey’s talking to be very invested in his experiments. Before Laurel could say anything else however Airey ordered them all to follow him over to the thought chamber to deal with a situation that had arisen there along with an employee from Accidents and Catastrophes that just joined them. Putting thoughts on orbs and new seers aside Laurel greeted Megan with a smile and a head nod before she followed her boss out of the entry chamber and over to the thought chamber.

On the one hand, the explanation that had come from her boss had relieved Dylan somewhat, but the idea that things could be exploding around her was a little disconcerting. Not to mention that fact it was reminiscent of Hogwarts, and also it made her wonder if she was in fact any safer than Aramis was with his dragons. She almost wanted to ask, yet she wasn’t certain exactly who to ask. Instead, she’d merely nodded at both Adam’s response and the official explanation, figuring it didn’t need any more than that. Except… “I haven’t forgotten the first rule of surviving Hogwarts,” she’d murmured softly.

Besides, things were obviously moving on as they’d been told an employee from Accidents and Catastrophes was going to join them and then said woman actually did. It made her wonder if things here hadn’t been quite as casual as they’d first seemed. Unless he was just working with what he had in front of him, which Dylan was apt to think might actually be the case even if she was tempted to ask Laurel if she’d seen any of this.

Her wand had definitely come out, either way, although she’d sent Megan a welcoming smile as introductions happened and then they’d all been instructed to follow her boss to the Thought Chamber. Onward, it seemed.

There he was! The ever so entertaining but capable Airey Flamsteed. “Hi, Mr. Airey,’’ Megan exclaimed and hurrying over to him. Look at that... there was a 'crowd' gathered. Just... just how in the world had she missed these people when she first entered the Chamber? There was a mental shrug as she grinned to the other employees. They had been seen around before, of course so they were not exactly strangers.

A narrow-eyed gaze was given to Airey at the mention of wands out but it was the good sort. Megan lived for these types of excitement. She held her wand closely. “You got it. Ready when you are.’’ Colour her interested and impressed when Airey spoke their names to the Chamber and repeated all their names in its direction.

Through the Chamber door she went!
