The holiday's we're over and they we're all back in business. With the events of just a few months ago with the many rock pillows, and not to forget the golem too still fresh in memory the Laurel entered the Decompression chamber again to survey the damage. She didn't work in this chamber and usually had no business in here, but Laurel wanted to see for herself if things we're back to normal in here.

Looking around she was surprised to see that the 40 or so rock pillow we're still lying on the floor where they had fallen. Why hadn't Airey had them removed? Did that mean that the golem was still in here too? Tugging blond strands of hair behind her ears thoughtfully Laurel walked towards the nearest pillow mumbling to herself "Why are they still here?"

Tap...tap...tappity tap...

Adam swung his support cane back and forth slowly as he walked. His over-sized purple sunglasses were shoved up into his black hair. He was trying to push his field of vision to the next level and therefore was trying not to keep the sunglasses on unless around people. His slightly brighter than usual blue eyes tended to glow a bit, due to the potion he was taking for his eyesight and the glow tended to weird people out. Hopefully, trying to use his eyes more wouldn’t have the opposite effect and put too much strain on his eyes. But he wouldn’t know until he tried, and frankly, the healers hadn’t been much help or inspiration lately.

He had, however, taken a wrong turn and was trying to find his way back Love Chamber so he would go back to work on his latest experiment. It was a time sensitive project and he only had about a half hour left before he needed to complete the next step.

” Vhy izt vat here?” Adam asked upon hearing a female’s soft voice. His eyesight might be terrible, but his hearing had improved as a result.

Laurel had bent down to pick up a rock pillow when she heard the distinct tippity tap of the cane that could only belong to Adam, level 9’s resident potioneer. He had a bad eyesight and if she didn’t misremember also bad hearing. Examining the rock pillow closer and drawing her hand over the fabric to feel it around for clues Laurel’s focus wasn’t on the door when Adam walked in.

Hearing his english mixed with a foreign language she thought was german she looked up from the pillow she was holding at Adam trying to not stare too long at the glowing eyes or the oversized sunglasses for that matter. "Hi Adam," Gesturing with the pillow she was holding towards the other 40 or so pillows lying on the floor Laurel continued "I wonder why Airey hasn’t discarded these rock pillows? They caused a lot of trouble last term if you remember?"

Nope, Adam didn’t remember. He had found a way to get out of elected to sit last year’s group activity out by going to the healers for his mandatory post-brain-take-over checkup. (He’d been fine by the way, if perhaps a little less goofy.) He’d heard a little about the event though and was quite grateful that he hadn’t participated. He likely would have ended up with a few broken bones and, while, the old Adam wouldn’t have been afraid of that, frankly the loss of his sight and the body abduction had been enough for a while.

He saw some shift in her indistinct form and figured she must be gesturing towards something. He looked out over the room, not seeing very much if he were honest. Closer things, if they stood still long enough sometimes came into dim focus long enough for him to figure out what it was he was looking at, but he didn’t really see anything here. He shuffled forward, then felt his support cane prod into something. ”Maybe, he vants a re-do?” he offered, poking the rock-pillow with his white and red cane. “He” could have been the rocks or Airey. Adam had spent a good portion of the year avoiding their boss, least the man want to exact revenge for what Reil – in Adam’s body – had done in the man’s office.

Hello!

Lucien had been letting his curiosity get the best of him despite his normal ideas of proper protocol and lines of authority. He had been peeking in every room in the Department to see what was behind the doors and what Mysteries were involved as per the name. He’d heard there were some incidents last year and he didn’t quite care for all of that, but he might as well do some research and be informed.

When he opened the door to this particular room however there were already a couple of people inside. He hadn’t met everyone yet and certainly hadn’t memorized everyone’s names. He tried to be subtle and back out of the doorway before catching their attention but as he was turning to close the door there was an audible SQUEAAAAAK.

Letting the rock pillow drop to the floor Laurel came to the conclusion that Adam hadn’t been there for their ’exercise’ with the pillows that Airey had arranged to get them off their seats so to speak. She had hoped for some support but it was clear that Adam wasn’t going to provide it. Laurel watched him shuffle close to her as his prodding cane into contact with one of the pillows. Furrowing her brows in mild confusion she repeated with a look over at Adam "He want’s a re-do? Who do you mean? Our boss? I doubt it. Airey won’t risk another golem incident." If he of course hadn’t lost all his marbles over the holidays. The golem Laurel definitely didn’t want to re-see.

Apparently Adam has said the wrong thing. There was a tension in the air that he couldn’t describe. Maybe, he tried to tell himself, Laurel just didn’t understand his accent. ”Zee rock zing,” he said motioning around the room with his hand out trying to clarify. But who knew with Airey? Maybe the man had lost his marbles. He was a strange duck and Adam had seen the man lose it before. He scratched his chin as he remembered Airey chasing him- no- Reil – around the room as he – no – Reil had a rock in his mouth. He highly doubted Laurel had ever seen Airey with a look like that in his eyes.

”Had it really been zat bad?” he asked her simply. ”I vas not zere zo I do not know…” He thought for a moment. If he remembered correctly, Laurel worked with prophecies. He had no clue if she was prophetic though, and wondered perhaps if she was sensitive to things he was not. Adam has spent most of the last year avoiding his boss because of the Reil incident, but perhaps it was time to bite the philosophical bullet and speak with the man. ”Schould ve ask zhe boss?” And be ‘we’ he meant Laurel, since Adam had no idea how to produce a patronus of any sort. He could, however, always send a paper note off. He always kept pen and paper with him and was pretty good at paper airplane charms

Blind he might be, but Adam’s hearing had improved greatly in the past two years. He had heard the door open, some footsteps, and had begun turning when the loud SQUEAAAAAK happened. The sound caused Adam to speed up his turn, his support cane swung outward in a large arc. Yes Adam was jumpy. It was nothing personal. If you’d been through what he’d been through in the last couple of years here in the DoM you’d be jumpy too.

”Zho’s zere?” he barked out, slightly brighter than normal blue eyes unseeing as they stared vaguely in Lucien’s direction. He wasn’t about to be taken over again by a strange creature or lose another of his five senses today.

Lucien cursed himself in his head, of course he couldn't have made a quiet exit. He hadnt meant to draw any attention to himself. Quite the opposite in fact, he just wanted information. To know everything about his new place of employment. He liked to know what he was dealing with and no one from outside Mysteries ever really had answers.

"Uh...hi!" Lucien stepped into the room and waved his hand. He felt awkward having been caught. "Sorry, I didn't realize anyone was in here. I can give you guys some privacy, I didn't mean to intrude." He scratched the back of his head. What was he doing here? "I was just...becoming familiar with my surroundings. New place and all." He tried to explain, but wanted to keep it short. No need for further questions. He can come explore another time. He'd have a better chance at learning the room's Mysteries anyways.

Privacy? What did the man think he and Laurel were doing? Adam didn’t realize it, but he took a step away from her as thoughts of Zita popped into his head. He put his support cane back on the ground as moved afraid he might hit a rock and fall over.

Sounded like the fellow was new to the department. ”Be careful,” Adam warned pulling his sunglasses down onto his face. He knew all too well the dangers of randomly walking into rooms around here, but the warning was all he would give the fellow. He wasn’t the type to go scaring people and it wasn’t a bad idea that the fellow look around. ”Vou don't have to go und are velcome to stay. A rock golem came out of nowhere and attacked all of us that we’re just dodging pillows for an athletic exercise. We we’re lucky that nobody got too badly injured." If she recalled right they had all come out of it with just some scrapes and bruises no concussion or anything like it. They hadn’t exactly given any of them fond memories to remember.

Privacy? Laurel tensed. He wasn’t implying that they we’re doing something inappropriate was he? She was happily married to Aaron thank you very much. She didn’t even think Adam was very attractive. To show he wasn’t intruding at all Laurel took another big step away from Adam as she shook her head. "No you’re not interrupting anything. Lucien right? We we’re just looking and discussing these pillow’s made of rock that caused some mayhem before the holidays and why they might still be here."

Laurel preferred introducing herself, but Adam beat her to it so she smiled a little and nodded as Adam told Lucien who they were. "So where will you work Lucien? What job have you taken up?" she wondered before looked over at Adam again. "I can send Airey a notice. A patronus isn’t needed." Pulling out her wand from her robe pocket Laurel conjured up a small parchment that she scribbled on and then sent it away to Airey's office. The note burned up into thin air and left after it a hint of burning smell in the air.

sweetpinkpixie 07-04-2019 01:00 AM

Airey had been shoulders deep in some paperwork at his desk along with having his personal star chart out to cross reference a few anomalies he had observed while helping train the new astronomers in the Space Chamber earlier in the week. Couldn't have another black hole incident now, could they? Thankfully, nothing in his char had indicated anything out of the ordinary and the report from the evolutionists was promising. Though he would go back and check just to be sure.

What Airey was NOT thankful for was the note that had INCINERATED itself on his desk as though it were trying to be a howler. A scorch mask now covered part of the orbital paths of Pluto and Neptune right where Pluto would have become the 8th planet WERE PLUTO STILL A PLANET TO BEGIN WITH. He supposed that certain former pupils of his own would take this opportunity to stake a claim that with that evidence now tampered with Pluto could be reinstated. It was an amusing thought but only fueling his agitation with the situation. WHO HAD THOUGHT IT PRACTICAL TO SEND A BURNING NOTE?! They had Ministry memos, quaint little purple paper airplanes that were a joy to play with afterwards. What was wrong with one of those?! WHY DID HIS STAR CHART AND OTHER DOCUMENTS HAVE TO SUFFER?!

Still. following the request of the note - who had sent it was forgotten in the heat of the moment - and arrived in the Decompression Chamber looking less than pleased.

"........I hope the thought that provoked the need to summon me is worth it. I have an important star chart I need to repair now," he grumbled as he looked upon the three.

Tension….!!!

Adam took another step away from Laurel, support cane tapping as he moved. He was kind of wondering what her problem was at this point. She really didn’t seem to like him and he wasn’t exactly sure what he had done. He didn’t smell funny today. His hair wasn’t oddly colored. His eyebrows were both intact and nicely trimmed…at least he thought they were (he rubbed at them with his free hand).

He hoped whatever the issue that it was just because of the dumb rock pillow things that she was on edge and that he just happened to be the person/thing she was taking it out on. He could understand her unease from what she described but still…no need for friction.

A waft of burnt paper filled the air and Adam rubbed at his nose trying to fend off a sneeze before pushing his glasses back up into his hair. He would have just sent a paper airplane note. Perhaps Laurel liked a dramatic flair.

And there he was!

The tension in the room went from a 6 to a 10 as soon as Airey walked in. Adam put his hands up, support cane dangling to indicate it wasn’t him. Last thing he needed was for his boss to get upset with him again. And this was the first time he’d willing sought out the man since Reil decided to try make a snack out of Airey’s pet rock. Frankly, Adam was happy the man had stopped that from happening because –woof! Trying to pass that?! Or chew it? Adam probably would be wearing dentures now.

”Laurel vas concerned about zee rocks…” Adam said turning around, but staying far out of Airey’s reach, you know, just in case. Not because he was scared of the man or anything.

He was also staying away from Laurel too.

Looking at the rocks? And Lucien had thought he had been acting strange. Maybe there's something in the air... stepping into the room he walked closer and held out his hand. "Well, it's nice to meet you. I'm Lucien, yes. Have we met before Laurel?" He didn't remember meeting her, at least he doesn't usually try to socialize. Its exhausting. But he did want to learn more about these rocks. What mayhem? What caused seemingly comfortable pillow rocks to be dangerous?

Looking up from the rocks at Laurel's question he clasped his hands behind his back and began to rock on his heels. "I've been taken on as a Cryptographer in the Chamber of Codes, fortunately. And what about the two of you?" I guess it doesn't hurt to make work-related connections. Does it?

Why are they sending a not to Flamsteed? Oh dear Lucien really doesn't need to be caught up in whatever this is....maybe if I just slip right back out...

I have an important star chart I need to repair now," he grumbled as he looked upon the three.

...too late! Well, he's in for it now. What? Was he to look like a coward and deny everything or can he just be a silent partner over here? Completely silent. No relation or correlation whatsoever. Nope, nothing.

Good. Yes, Laurel. Not Lucien, Lucien has not sent any burning notes or annoyed any new bosses. He's just staying silent....

sweetpinkpixie 07-12-2019 05:12 AM

....Laurel was worried about the rocks?

The department head's mind instantly wandered to Pebbles in his office and wondering what the Unspeakable had to fret about her when he pieced together that the reference was to the pillows. "And the reason for sending me a memo that BURST in flames after was supposed to be some existential representation of this upset?" Because the man was NOT here for it.

At all.

Airey couldn't even bring himself to pay attention to the new Cryptographer for the department - who was being the nervous spectator over there in the corner - and had his forget-me-not-blues fixated on Adam and Laurel. Though Adam too seemed to be avoiding getting too close to the him as though he were going to catch the Black Plague. Just make sure your vaccinations were all up to date, Adam.

"All 42 of these rock pillows were examined and tests after the incident of last term. Any lingering effects non existent and the threat level minimal at best."

Though, now that he was looking around, it seemed there may be a few pillows missing? Hmmm.

”Potioneer in zee effer locked room,” Adam said continuing to poke the rocks with his support cane. Mentally he added ‘and department black cloud and head of the bad luck club.’ Aloud he said - ”Chamber of Cotes? Don’t zink I’ve been in zere.” The name sounded like he couldn’t get into too much trouble in there, but then, one would have thought that about the Space Chamber and look where that had gotten him.

Perhaps he’d have to check it out… once his eyesight was better.

Adam shrugged, head bobbing back and forth between Laurel and Airey’s general directions. He had a feeling that Airey was reliving the events in his office with the pet rock and Reil and he took a step further away from the man just as his boss started babbling about flames and philosophy and said a bunch of English words that were not in Adam’s vocabulary.

Had Adam’s sight been normal, he probably would have caught the pensive look on his boss’s face post-exposition about the rocks being fine. But as Adam could barely see anything clearly, he missed it. As it was, he could understand Laurel’s unease about the rocks, especially after what she had described earlier about the last time she had been in this room.

And then he thought of something. Laurel worked with prophecies. Perhaps she knew something that nobody else did. He turned back in her direction wondering. He wasn’t really sure how prophetic things worked.

Aslan had slipped into the room some time ago, though she had not been trying to sneak in by any means. It had just... Happened. Quiet, watchful. She had come here for coffee and a chance to think- to dream- outside of her chamber- but there seemed to be something happening. Laurel, a witch she did not know well, was flustered- pink- flush, fire, fever- while the others, including the former professor, seemed skeptical at most.

The mug was warm in the young mother's hands. She did not speak, not yet feeling any need to, only listened. The other woman's worry seemed to ebb and flow, filling the room in waves of soft, frustrated fear. Aslan tilted her head, careful in her consideration before turning her dark eyes to Adam - fearful too, but not the same fearful - and then to Airey.

He was as grey as ever. A stone. a block. a steel cylinder ready for flight. Certainly, Aslan mused, He had seen enough to know nothing was ever simply gone.

She sipped her coffee, it's bitterness awakening her. brightening. Still, she said nothing.

Silence.

Airey much preferred that sound these days as loud noises reminded him of the explosive ones that came whenever Atlas and Aries were near one another. Or even several rooms down from one another. Bloody hell may they be sorted into different houses when their time for Hogwarts came.

Though the silence greeting him now was particularly unnerving. He had come to expect the general aesthetic from Miss Evans - still mind boggling that she was one of his employees now - but Adam was being particularly grim today. And yes, the department head did recall the whole attempted consumption of Pebbles...but that was all water under the bridge as far as the man was concerned. Now that that whole situation had come to light, there was no real reason for Airey to resent Adam. Outside of the man being a bit of a liability to the department with his disaster prone nature, that is.

"....is that all?" he questioned, eyes shifting about. Because if not, then he fancied himself a bit of that space ice cream from the vending machine.

Adam, sigh. Did her really have to speak for her when she very well could speak for herself? Feigning the wish too shot Adam a sour look she asked Airey. "What did you do with the rock golem? Did you send it to accidents for evaluation or is it still here?" She really wanted to know if she could scratch that thing out of her dreams and sights as harmless.

Lucien. Lucien. Laurel was upset concerned and rightly so about the pillow rocks and Lucien wanted to play the get-to-know-each other- game. She wasn’t exactly in the best mood for it but figured she could at least answer pleasantly as she shot the other man a small shook of the head. "I don’t believe we’ve met before this Lucian, but it’s nice to make another co-workers acquaintance."

She shot Airey a speculative glance before she added quickly to Lucien so Adam didn’t speak for her again. "I work as a prophecy maven and seer in the Hall of Prophecy.!

Laurel chose to ignore Airey’s angry tone about the memo that had burst into flames. He should just cool his jets. It was just a memo not a stampeding patronus. Looking around the room, counting the rocks off in her head and not reaching 42. Suspicious. Holding up a hand to stop him Laurel asked "If the pillows are no threat then why are a number of them missing from? I only count around 35 pillows not 42."

And why was a woman (Aslan) lingering in the back of the room drinking coffee Laurel just realized? Looking over at her she called out “Hi! Are you looking for someone?”

He heard Laurel’s sigh as if she was standing right next to him. She sure was surly one. He really didn’t have much else to add to this conversation. It was more a case of once again, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Besides, every time he opened his mouth, Laurel seemed to take offense to whatever he said. Best to keep quiet at this point, he figured.

He poked another rock, then turned and folded up his cane. As the rocks were all behind him, he was certain he could find his way out the door and back to Love Chamber. His potion should just about be ready for the next steps or two.

And then Laurel was yelling about rocks being missing and at yet another person…who else had joined them? Adam fidgeted uncomfortably with his sunglasses. It felt like this had become a department meeting. Why would rocks go missing?

A thought occurred to him. ”Is zere ein containment charm on das room?” Because if there wasn’t, perhaps adding one would put Laurel at ease. "Unt vhy vould rocks go misting?" he asked. Surely nobody would want one in place of their desk chairs. Or maybe they did. Adam had no idea if they looked comfy and he wasn't about to try one out.

sweetpinkpixie 08-21-2019 11:22 AM

Cool his heels? COOL HIS HEELS?! SHE WAS THE ONE SENDING HIM MEMOS THAT SUDDENLY BURST INTO FLAMES. THAT WAS HOT NOT COOL. AND HE MEANT SUCH IN A LITERAL SENSE.

"...I do not believe you understand the situation," he replied somewhat calmly. "Your memo which unnecessarily burst into flames has ruined my star chart and thus set me back on several deadlines." This was her opportunity to explain why she felt the need for such shenanigans before he officially contacted payroll for a small monthly deduction.

What in Orion's name were these Unspeakables asking him? Sweet solstice he needed some stronger tea...though he could never cease his obsession with Earl Gray, HOT. "As you are all well aware, the Department of Mysteries has elaborate containment and protective charms all around it. From the chambers themselves to the department as a whole, there are numerous defensive measures in place for your protection as well as the protection of the Ministry at large." Though, as was the nature of magic itself, things were still very unpredictable. The fact that grown witches and wizards refused to accept this status quo was embarrassing at times. "The rock golem simply ceased to be and it was concluded that whatever force had created it had run its course." Which was also the case for most incidents in the Space Chamber, as it were. Like the black hole of several years ago. "As for why any of the rock pillows may have gone missing...I suspect someone has stolen them...and when I find out who has done so they are fired."

Did anyone think he was joking? He was not. Airey Flamsteed took his rock enthusiasm VERY seriously.

sweetpinkpixie 04-07-2021 08:07 AM

*post third wizarding war TL* hello hi :3 come play with us!

After relieving his acting department head of their services, a long standing Unspeakable from the Chamber of Codes who knew the department better than Airey knew the Prime Directive. A mousy sort of fellow who hardly commanded a room, Airey had felt confident in that at the very least the man would keep what organization had not been tainted during his own imprisonment and subsequent Imperius Curse dealings...as well as restore some sense of routine to things.

Back now after a week long stay in St. Mungo's for his physical injuries he experience while battling at Hogwarts and then a month leave of absence to follow (during which he had addressed his feelings more so than he ever had in his entire life and he was not sure how he felt about that), Airey Flamsteed found himself back on Level 9 and unable to spend too much time in his own office. It felt foreign in his sterile familiarity and thus he had found himself meandering into the Decompression Chamber. Still missing several rock pillows which, according to paperwork on his desk that the man who had taken his form had neglected, proved that the golem in the Hall of Prophecy had been formed from those pillows thanks to the year of haphazard magic some time ago. Therefore...those pillows would not be returning.

Alas.

Sighing to himself, the blonde approached the vending machine and knocked on the rubbery glass lightly several times. Maybe...he would live a little on the wild side and get himself a serving of black cherry AND buttered pecan ice cream.

And try not to think about how the number of rock pillows in this room was off and just how much that was going to bother him until he rectified the situation.

When would things go back to normal around level 9? The mousy chap that had acted in Airey’s place while he had been hospitalized in St Mungus had really tested Laurel’s patience and not in a good way. She supposed she could hand it to him that he had kept things running smoothly in Mysteries and had restored some of the old routine but he wasn’t Airey. Laurel missed her boss and a mousy man who couldn’t take charge of a room was never going to replace him.

Hearing a rumour that Airey was back Laurel left the prophecy hall to go look for him because she wanted to see him for herself to know that it was true. Not finding him in his office, she on impulse headed into the Decompression Chamber to see if Airey was there. If she didn’t find him she supposed she could get herself a hot drink or some ice cream as a consolation for the possible disappointment. However Laurel was in luck as she saw Airey’s familiar figure standing in front of the vending machine, knocking on the glass.

"Hi Airey," Laurel called out in a half-raised tone to not startle him. She was unsure of him because last time she had been in a room with him he had threatened to fire her and she didn’t forget that easily.

sweetpinkpixie 04-11-2021 10:09 AM

that pillow incident was yeaaaaaars ago IC, I am sure they have been in here since XD

Truth be told, Airey had almost entirely forgotten about his supernova over the missing rock pillows. In light of everything else to be angry about, it entirely slipped his mind. The uncomfortable and incorrect number of pillows, however, did not and his thoughts kept circling right back around to them with everything he looked at. The squishy to the vending machine? It could be considered the pleasant sort of squish of a pillow. Tube of ice cream? Well...some rocks came out more cylindrical than others. The tiny spheres of deliciousness inside? Those were obliviously tiny little pebbles.

Obviously.

Using his thumb to flip open the lid to buttered pecan first, the department head had just tilted the container up against his lips and poured a little into his mouth when Laurel entered the chamber. Foggy and some moments more prominent than others, he couldn't help but feel the smallest sliver of guilt. Though his logic quickly dismissed the sentiment, it was not as if he had actively done any of these heinous acts over the past couple of years. It hadn't been him and was more someone of his likeness performing the acts.

"Laurel, hello," he mumbled through a mouthful of ice cream. "How...how is the Hall of Prophecy?"

Small talk. Still not his thing.

"Laurel, hello," he mumbled through a mouthful of ice cream. "How...how is the Hall of Prophecy?"

Small talk. Still not his thing.

Without rush Laurel slowly walked over to the vending machine rounding Airey as she did so, to get her own ice cream container. She took her time to pick out what she wanted in silence, which today ended up being strawberry and chocolate ice cream as she knocked on the vending machine glass. Laurel didn’t turn her attention to Airey before she had picked up the container, flipped up the lid and tasted the deliciousness inside.

After swallowing she replied cautiously turning her blue eyes on Airey. "The Hall of Prophecy is slowly getting back to normal routines. We got some new prophecies archived today." If he wanted to make small talk then Laurel could play along. "The vending machine's ice cream is delicious, don’t you think so too? The strawberry and chocolate mix I can definitely recommend."

sweetpinkpixie 04-20-2021 02:02 PM

He would still rather watch paint dry than discuss prophecies, the man may never warm to Divination in a manner that had his reflexes not roll out a bit of snark, but he was pleased and relieved to hear that there was a sense of normalcy returning to that chamber as well. He had only heard echoes in his pocket prison during the entire golem fiasco...but it was more than enough to know it had been an absolute mess.

"Good. Stellar," he nodded before knocking back another mouthful of his ice cream. Sweet solstice, small talk was painful. "Yes...why I had it installed when I took over he position." He had been debating adding another unit...or rather HAD been a few years ago before everything had gone to Hades. Now, due to the Neo Alliance clean up, the remaining budget needed to be allocated elsewhere. "Strawberry and chocolate is my daughter's favorite."
