Default Chamber of Codes

The Chamber of Codes contains the extensive library containing all of the information and research gathered from the work that the Department of Mysteries has uncovered since it's inception. Photos, actual artifacts, a warded bell jar containing a broken timeturner, countless tomes, grimoires and records fill the space - including, a certain book of fairytales. All Unspeakables may use the archives to further your research. Visitors to the Department of Mysteries will need to be granted permission by their Department Head and clearance by the Department Head of Mysteries before using this Chamber.

This Chamber is more than simply archives as Unspeakables tasked with deciphering and decoding of objects and texts written in mysterious languages or codes are also stationed here. Containing numerous wooden cubicle-like desks and chairs designed with the acoustics of this chamber in mind, for sound is one of the most important things when studying a language, even if a dead one. Welcome to the Chamber of Codes, a room dedicated to the In addition to the curved ceiling and echo-absorbing walls, the room also contains several desks with recording devices, revolving tools for decoding, and plenty of parchment and quills. Meanwhile a cogged and metallic device which looks something like a Lorenz cipher sits alone on one of the desks.

Toward the back of the room a perfectly round indention holds a roulette of symbols for deciphering things that like the Phaistos disk contain ancient knowledge. Some of which detail magical history.

CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

Bookshelves, tables, and artifacts slowly begin scraping their way across the floor of the chamber towards the North-most wall as though being pulled. Tomes and grimoires slowly creep their way towards the end of the shelves and a few begin to fall over the edge in a tragic shower of leather bindings and parchment.

Natalie entered the room needing to archive some records when she witnessed a tragic sight. The contents of the room were moving. Shelves were being mysteriously emptied of their contents. The young woman had to quickly move, as items fell and furniture scraped along the floor.

"What is going on?!" Natalie exclaimed as she aimed her wand.

"Arresto Momentum!" Natalie bellowed, hoping that would slow down any moving objects.

Your charm does indeed take hold of the intended objects. Unfortunately for you and the valuable records stored her, it does little to keep the mysteries movements at bay. Things do indeed slow for a time, but whatever was pulling everything north was getting stronger. Not even you, Unspeakable, are immune to it's pull.

Brilliant. Natalie had only been working with the Ministry for a short amount of time and she was already dealing with this. What to do? After a moment, she sent a Patronus to Flamsteed. Her silvery vixen carried the message to Flamsteed. "Emergency! Chamber of Codes is being sucked in by a mysterious force. Records and I will soon vanish!"

Natalie performed the Sticking Charm on her shoes, hoping it will give her some precious moments. She wanted to survive this horrendous ordeal relatively unscathed.

Moving towards the Chamber of Codes has proven to be a far more difficult task than previously anticipated - although the astronomer somewhat berated himself for thinking otherwise considering the source of the problem - but he somehow manage to get himself to the door with a little magical help and quick wandwork.

A quick survey of the space gave some relief in that at least there was not a second phenomenon to have popped up elsewhere within the department.
Although given the nature of the research done here...that was not entirely outside the sphere of possibility.

Sweet solstice why had this woman not begun protecting all the materials here? THERE WAS IRREPLACEABLE KNOWLEDGE WITHIN THESE WALLS! Flourishing his wand, Airey began casting nonverbals at a few nearby tomes to encase them in an enchanted and impenetrable magical bubble for now. "Start doing the same," he barked.

Priorities. Airey Flamsteed had them. Sort of.

Natalie heard Flamsteed bark his order to her. She knew that these records were precious and once lost, they would be lost forever. However, she was slightly miffed that she was made to feel as if she was the reason for all this. She had never experienced such a thing. It was best to not say anything.

Aiming her wand at the records and replicated the spell that Flamsteed had performed.

Laurel didn't often leave the hall of prophecy but today she made her way down to the chamber of codes to research the archives. A few potential seers we're coming in for their seer trials later in the week and Laur wanted to see if there we're any known past seers in their families or not. Research was key and while she was at it she could also archive a number of fulfilled prophecies that was taking up space in her egg-shaped pod.

Entering the library Laurel smiled at a number of familiar faces as she walked down past several book cases and wooden cubicle-like desks until she reached an unoccupied area. She worked swiftest alone and without distractions. Putting down her notepad on the wooden desk Laurel went in among the bookcases to store the fulfilled prophecies in their right places.

”Laurel, did vou looze zomething?,” Adam asked. He was leaning up against the bookcases holding a book really close this face. It was so close in fact, that his hid most of his face and the new horned-rimmed glasses with the thick coke-bottle lenses they held. He hadn’t seen her as much as sensed her. There was always a prickly air around the woman, not to mention that Adam’s sense of smell was still pretty astute and he could smell the soap she used. It was due to the particularly tense air of seriousness always around the woman that Adam couldn’t help but be sardonic. He flipped a page without lowering the book. Now that he could see enough to read, he was trying to catch up on a few articles regarding new potion discoveries and he just didn’t want to sit in the locked room with the distracting smells the Amortentia potion produced. It reminded him too much of Zita and well, right now he was mad at her. ”Perhaps more rock pillovs?” he jested. Although if memory served, the ones she insisted were missing last year were still at large. Maybe they should make “wanted” posters for them.

Not expecting to run into anyone in the library at this hour Laurel almost jumped out of her skin at Adam's question, his voice had sounded so loud. Taking a shaky breath to calm her raising pulse with the prophecy orb's still in her arms the blond seer turned around to face her mysteries colleague. "Adam, you shouldn't sneak up on people like that. It's scary." Laurel stated tersely, but she smoothed over it by explaining kindly to him. "No, I haven't lost something. I was going to store these fulfilled prophecies in the archives and then do some research on the families of a few potential seers that are coming in for their exams later in the week."

At the mention of rock pillows Laurel gave him a long sour look. "Why are you bringing up those pillows again? I know they are still not all accounted for and Airey couldn't care less that i think it's disturbing." Ugh. Adam, Adam why did you have to remind her of those pillows? Did he want her to get into a foul mood? Her mood was good and Laurel intended for it to stay that way. "So what brings you down to the library Adam? Potion ingredients?"

The Chamber of Codes was a very quiet room. It had, after all, been designed to muffle sound. So it should come as a big surprise to the two unspeakables (Krel Ansell / Nordic Witch) that the room was suddenly filled with odd clickety-click noises. The clacks were soon joined with odd whizzes and buzzes, clicks, and clacks.

If the Seer and Potioneer were to travel a few feet further into the chamber, they would find that many of the revolving tools, recording devices, and the large machine that looked like a Lorenz Cipher were the cause of the noise. What had set them off? Had someone been using them only to walk away? The two Unspeakables were alone in the room. Or were they?

Adam highly doubted that he had the ability to sneak up on anyone, but he kept his self-deprecating thoughts to himself. ” Zorry if I scared vou,” he simply said. It truly hadn’t been his intention to startle her, more just to announce his presence so that she didn’t get that funny feeling of not being alone. Or was Adam the only one who experienced that feeling? The book in his hands snapped shut and he slipped it back onto the shelf before turning to look directly at Laurel, blue eyes big and buggy looking behind his thick lenses.

Laurel did not seem happy with Adam mentioning the rock pillows. ”If it bothers vou zat much, ve could do ein level by level zearch for zem,” he offered. He’d even be willing to come in and do them on his off hours. Not like he had anything to keep him at home anyways. Especially now that he and Zita were…what? He still didn’t know what was going on with them.

As Laurel continued to talk, Adam got an odd feeling. It started between the shoulder blades and shimmied up making the hair on the back of his neck stand up a little. There was a low tick-tick noise that he wasn’t sure if Laurel could hear and he turned his head to the left, holding up a finger to Laurel. ”Shh..” he said. ” Did anyone elze come vith vou?” Because he had been 99% sure he was alone in the chamber until Laurel had joined him. The noise grew louder, whirring and buzzes coming with the ticks. ”I zhought,” he asked turning his gaze back to Laurel. ”Zis room vas dezigned to zilence noize?” Maybe he was wrong. Adam didn’t spend as much time in the room as Laurel surely did.

Either Laurel's Inner Eye was sleeping or her senses we’re off because usually nobody could sneak up on her. Adam had succeeded though and it was weird. With his cane and such he was the least stealthy person she knew that worked in Mysteries. "Apology accepted." Laurel murmured in response. She watched Adam put a book back on the shelves, which reminded her of the orbs she still carried in her arms. "I’ll be right back!" she told him before she walked in between the shelves and down to the prophecy storing section. After depositing the orbs in their proper places Laurel returned to Adam’s side.

Rock pillows...Resisting the urge to sigh Laurel said instead tagging on to Adam’s suggestion. "Sure a level by level search for the pillows sounds like a good idea Adam. Airey would have to approve that though and something tells me he won’t. Maybe the rock pillows are still on our level somewhere so we should search all the rooms here first before we ask to broaden the search. You haven’t seen any pillows in the potions lab?"

Laurel was about to ask if Adam had bidden in the silent auction when he shushed her and that was when she heard it..There was an eerie and odd clickety-click sound coming from somewhere close. Shaking her head she said quietly. "No, i came down here alone. Did you bring anyone along?" The answer was probably no too because otherwise whomever that person was would have joined them by now. Listening to the sound and turning her head left and right, not sure where the sound came from she nodded in response to Adams question. "Yes this room is supposed to absorb up noise so this is eerie and weird. Shall we see if we can find where the clicking sound is coming from?"

There certainly was something odd going on in the Chamber of Codes. Laurel and Adam were being nice to each other! Adam blinked, shocked that Laurel hadn’t come back with some sharp short retort to his apology. If anyone had asked him, he’d had said that he was Laurel’s least favorite person on Level 9 because he always seemed to find a way to upset her. But apparently not today. He stood there confused for a moment as Laurel slipped off.

By the time she returned he had his composure together and was nodding along to her suggestion that they start looking for the rock pillows on level 9. He wasn’t really sure what he was going to do with them if he found them…levitate them back to the Decompression Chamber most likely. He still didn’t fully understand her aversion to the missing pillows, but he would indulge her due to her unusual congeniality.

But all other concerns disappeared when she agreed that the room was supposed to be quiet and that she had come down alone to the chamber. That creeping feeling that had been traveling up Adam’s neck? Well, it shrouded his head for a moment and he stood there unable to process much besides the noise. Adam was, by no means, a brave person in the conventional sense. Nope…he’d rather face an unknown potion or explosion than an unknown opponent or charm or spell. He was rubbish at charms work and therefore dueling. And he didn’t have the touch for creature handling. ”Nein,” he said in answer to Laurel’s question. ” I have been alone all morning. Vou are zee first perzon I have zeen.”

He nodded at her suggestion that they figure out what was making the noises. Resisting the urge to produce his wand from his back pocket, Adam motioned that he was going to head around the other side of the bookshelf. He assumed Laurel would go back down the main aisle.

Laurel had a feeling that Adam was thoroughly confused by her behaviour. One minute she was being snappy at him and the next nice. Well that was how she liked it. She wanted to be unreadable it made things more interesting in the workplace but for some people like Adam she betted it to be pretty annoying. No matter though it was time to refocus on the clicking sound. One thing she was sure about was that it weren't those rock pillows that we're on the loose that was the cause of this new disturbance.

A clicking noise in a room that was supposed to be quiet and sound absorbing was disturbing to say the least, but they needed to investigate further before they contacted Airey. Laurel still remembered how infuriated he had been last time they had called him down. Tuning in to what Adam was saying she asked "You haven't heard anyone saying that they've seen or heard strange things when they've come from the chamber of codes this past week?" Everyone on level 9 visited this chamber regularly so if this clicking noise had been going on they'd have heard about it.

Extracting her wand from her pocket Laurel nodded to Adam as he went down the right side of the bookshelf while she proceeded down the main aisle bookshelf aisle towards the weird sound. She really hoped that it was something that could be easily explained and not something that required alerting another ministry department.

She really hoped that it was something that could be easily explained and not something that required alerting another ministry department.

As Adam proceeded down the aisle, his fingers twitched. He refused to produce his wand, fearing that he’d look like a paranoid moron should he come across someone. There were, after all, a few new Unspeakables in the department. Perhaps they were on the stealthy side and neither Laurel nor himself had heard or seen them in the Chamber. After all, weirder things had happened in the Department of Mysteries and both he and Laurel had been victims of said weird things.

He clenched his fingers together, blunt fingernails digging a little into his palms as he walked. Slowly he walked, checking down each row of shelves and around each desk nook as he passed. But he saw nothing, nor did he hear anything besides he odd noise of the unmanned and very loud machines. As he approached the cipher machine he stopped, waiting for Laurel to appear. ”Find anything?” he called out over the noise of the machine. Because unless someone was under an invisibility cloak, Adam was pretty certain the two of them were alone.

After all, weirder things had happened in the Department of Mysteries and both he and Laurel had been victims of said weird things.

He clenched his fingers together, blunt fingernails digging a little into his palms as he walked. Slowly he walked, checking down each row of shelves and around each desk nook as he passed. Assuming that Adam hadn’t heard any reports of other oddities earlier in the week since he didn’t answer Laurel continued down the centre aisle. She cautiously walked with her wand gripped tightly as she looked left and right and up and down the bookshelves for something suspicious. She really hoped that nothing would hop out at her or she’d scream and cast a spell in fright. Nothing happened though as Laurel kept walking toward the clicking noise. They had experienced a number of weird happenings over the recent years so she would thank her lucky tarot cards if this noise didn’t come from a rock golem or something of that affect.

Unconsciously Laurel gripped her wand tighter and tighter and by the time she stepped out of the bookshelves section soon after Adam her hand was cramping. Loosening her grip and trying to shake off the cramp she walked over to stop next to Adam. She eyed the cipher machine, revolving tools and recording devices that we’re making the buzzing and clicking noises for several minutes before she turned her attention to Adam. "No I didn’t find anything out of place or odd. Did you?" Gesturing to the machine and other gadgets she asked "Why do you think those gadgets are making such high noises? Has someone forgotten to shut them off?"

The two Unspeakables were indeed alone in the room. Nobody else had come and gone in the last few hours. Revelio would not reveal anything or anyone hidden in the room. Finite Incantatem would not make the machines stop either. None of the machine appeared to be malfunctioning. Quite the opposite. They all looked as if they were attempting to break a code or translate a dead language. Especially the big cipher machine with the ticker tape being spat out. If one of the Unspeakables were to look at the tape, they wouldn’t be able to read the symbols and dots and dashes that were being printed.

With a noise that sounded like a child spitting out broccoli, the cipher’s keys stopped moving and the ticker tape fluttered to the floor. Just as suddenly as they had started the other machines stopped their whirring and whizzing, leaving the room in an uncomfortable silence.

Adam shook his head no to Laurel’s question about finding anything odd or out of place. His eyes scanned the room, but even with his new glasses, Adam’s vision was around 20/200. He wasn’t bound to see much and over the noise of the machines, Adam couldn’t hear anything unusual, well beyond the machines running on their own. ”I haf nein idea,” he said walking over to one of the decoding devices. He poked one of the buttons on it, but it just kept whirring. Producing his wand from his back pocket, he waved it over the machine. ”Finite Incantatem,” Adam tried. Nothing happened. He wondered if was a new moon – sometimes his wand didn’t want to cooperate when it was, due to his werewolf claw core and since he wasnt brewing any potions he hadn't paid much attention to the star charts at his work station.

He turned to Laurel. ”Could zee Encephalons be acting up again?” he had been meaning to stop by and check on them – he did so once a month just to make sure because he didn’t want anyone else to have to go through what he had been through – but he hadn’t the time to check on them this month. He found it difficult to believe they’d be able to reach out this far though. Maybe if the machines were in the same room as them, but here? A few chambers away? No….

Right?

As he asked about the Encephalons, the machines stopped and silence echoed in the room. He held up a finger to Laurel indicating she should remain silent. Maybe his ears would pick on footsteps or something. Like his sense of smell, his ears had gotten more acute due to his lack of sight. But he heard nothing. He shrugged and put his hand down. ”I am fery sure ve are alone.”

The closer they got to the machine and other devices on the desk the more the noise intensified with its whirring and whizzing. It even made it hard for Laurel to hear herself think properly. After a sideways glance at Adam that told her that aside from the running machines nothing else seemed to be out of order. Something to thankful for maybe. She followed Adam over to the table where Laurel like her colleague poked the big cipher machine that kept spitting out ticker tape. "Revelio!" She casted first, to no affect and then she tried casting "Finite Incantatem!" but of course it had the same useless result. The machine didn't stop it spitting and the dots and symbols on the tape was completely unreadable. It was like it was gibberish from ancient language long forgotten.

Huffing loudly in frustration Laurel tried poking a few other devices before she turned to Adam. Still huffing and puffing she said shortly to him. "No, the encephalons couldn't have done this. Airey made sure of that when we got them re-caged after that horrible incident." Seriously why did he have to bring those creepy brains up again? Laurel still had occasional nightmares about them. She was about to say more when Adam held up a finger at her to keep quiet. The machines and devices had suddenly stopped working while they had been talking. Straining her ears and watching especially the cipher machine if it would start up again Laurel waited and waited. Nothing happened and everything was weirdly silent again. Eyes turning to Adam she asked "I guess we need to report this to Airey?"

Adam walked a slow circled around the table holding the cypher. Now that the machines were done making noise and doing whatever they were doing. The room felt normal. Nothing felt out of place or odd. Even his own nerves had calmed. Apparently Adam had been too long in the Department of Mysteries if something like this didn’t seem to bother him. Nope – strike that. Adam was actually a little relieved to have Laurel agree that it couldn’t the Encephalons acting up.

”Ja, I suppose ve schould,” Adam said in response to summoning Airey. Annnndddd since last time Laurel had done the honors, Adam supposed he should be the one to do send the message this time. With a sigh, he pulled out his memo pad and translator pen and scribbled down a note. Once done he ripped the paper off the pad and then murmured a spell. The paper folded itself up into an airplane and zoomed off out of the room in search of Airey. Part of Adam didn’t want to be in the room when Airey arrived, but he wasn’t going to leave Laurel alone in the room.

Continuing to wander around the tables, his foot crunched on something. He stopped and bent over to pick up the ticker tape that the machine had spit up. He couldn’t read it. He held it out to Laurel. ” Can you rread zis? It does not look to be Englisch.” And of course it wasn’t German or he’d have been able to read that.

What was going ON with the interdepartmental memos these days? Aside from the ones that set themselves on fire - which he had initially thought was the fault of Laurel again - many of them propelled themselves at his forehead rather than glide to a polite stop on his desk like they had been CHARMED to. Granted, his forehead was a large target...but this was becoming absurd.

Looked like he was going to have to have another talk with maintenance. Maybe Accidents & Catastrophes knew what was going on?

Tightening his tie as he rushed from his office into the Chamber of Codes, one of the more VITAL chambers in the department, Airey threw open the door and stepped inside with the expectation of seeing the entire place on fire. Which, thankfully, it was not...but the lack of flames did little to calm his wild palpitations.

"Report!" he requested as he stepped inside proper as he channeled his inner Picard.

When Adam took upon himself to send the message to Airey she mumbled a quiet "Thank you!". Last time she had done it, their boss hadn't exactly arrived in the best of moods to put it mildly. Looking around the library that was now peaceful and without any weird sounds again Laurel should feel calm but she only felt troubled. Why did the machines run in overdrive one minute and the next just stop? It was unsettling since none of their spells had detected any abnormalities or been able to make the machines stop working.

She watched the paper plane fly off before she watched Adam circle around the tables appearing to be as unsettled as she felt. When he stopped and bent down Laurel got excited thinking that Adam had found a good clue to the mystery when what he held out to her was just the cipher machines ticker tape. Accepting the tape Laurel scrutinized it thoroughly before she looked up and shook her head as she held it back. "No, i can't read it. The symbols and such don't appear to be in any language i've ever seen."

It was at that time that their dear boss decided to show up, requesting a report. After a glance at Adam she started eyes turning to Airey. "Well the big cipher machine and countless other devices on the tables we're running in overdrive and making very loud whirring and whizzing sounds when came to the library, isn't that right Adam?" Laurel felt that Adam could take the report from there.

Adam reached over and took back the ticker-tape from Laurel as Airey strode towards them. Airey was, especially when he wanted to be, a rather loud and forceful man. It was something that, under usual circumstances, Adam admired about the man. But today wasn’t normal circumstances and Airey’s intensity wasn’t calming. Rather it was agitating to the German. Perhaps it was because it seemed to be that the only times Adam interacted with this department head was when something seemed to be going wrong. It made him glad that he hadn’t offered to or been asked to help out on the special mission to save Hogwarts. Well, that and the fact that Adam figured if he went along, he’d probably come back missing a limb…or two…and well, Adam was quite attached to his appendages.

”Nobody else vas in ze rroom mitt us at ze time.” Adam added to Laurel’s assessment as he ran his fingers over the length of the tape. The shapes didn’t really make any logical sense to him either, not that he could read braille. ”Undt Finite Incantatem undt ze r-efealing charms refealed notzzing. Nor did ze room silent ze sounds uff ze machines as it iss made to do.”

He held out the ticker-tape paper in Airey’s general direction. ”Ze big machine made zis. Ve kannot read it.” But perhaps the big boss man could. He turned his head towards Laurel, wondering if she had anything else to add.
