Default Office of Conley Phora

Directly past the lobby sits a door that is usually closed, but always welcomes visitors.
If you are from another department and have made an appointment the DIMC Coordinator will direct you to Conley office.
If you are a level five employee or ambassador, feel free to knock at anytime.

The office is very spacious from previous department head's expansion charms and is filled with a few leather chairs that sit around Conley's desk. A few personal decorations can be found scattered around the room including an old warn looking tea set. A framed photo of a young lady, the glass chipped a little, the photo slightly faded, sits on the bookshelf behind Conley's desk. A few bowling trophies can also be found interspersed among the books acting as bookends. A rosette ribbon from the 2098 Quidditch World cup can be found stuck to corner of his desk.

Ah.

Conley was not alone.

"So this is why you're late, huh? MATE. You could have SAID. I WOULDA EATEN ALONE!" And he would have consumed enough for both of them.

Swinging himself into a seat, Theophilus spread out the food over Conley's desk without a care for any paperwork. "I only got enough for two." Thousand. Theophilus had no understanding of portion sizes.

Conley sat there holding his planner book in both hands, open mouthed and brow furrowed in complete befuddlement as Theophilus burst into his office. Shocked by the fellow's behavior, Conley managed to get out ”I’m just - Sa… Ambassador Singh…carpets - Why was he suddenly feeling embarrassed? They hadn’t been doing anything to warrant his flusterment. He cleared his throat and was about to finish his request for Sachin -

But then Theophilus was taking over his desk and making himself at home. ”Arrreepp!” a weird yelp escaped Conley as he tossed the planner (which fell to the floor) and scrambled to move his beloved tea set as Theophilus began spreading food all over his desk. Usually Conley would have been extremely grateful to have lunch delivered to his office, but today had just been a little overwhelming; Sachin’s visit being the only exception.

All he needed now was for imports to not have a fit about it. “Let them know that production should be back to full scale by early next week. I’ll keep you updated.’’

Tea forgotten at that moment, Sachin arched an eyebrow as they continued to talk about the passport issues. From what little he gathered, it seemed there was concern and suspicion on Conley’s part, there’s was nothing concrete as yet. He was fully prepared to add that he was willing to dig deeper to find out more when...

Sachin winced. Conley had a loud visitor. “Quite a loud-mouthed friend you’ve got there,’’ he said in mild amusement. He turned to take a look at Conley’s new arrival. The man didn’t think much of the manners displayed there but it could be said that the big mouth man was comfortable in Conley’s presence.

Look at all that food.

At least he knew his boyfriend would be having lunch.

“That’s fine. I was just leaving, anyway.’’ Sachin got to his feet, smiling faintly and warmly at Conley. That happened exactly at the moment that rain slowly then rapidly began to pour. “Kya billee hai? What the heck?” was the confused question as the office went dark.

In addition, the rain had suddenly stopped.

Completely bamboozled by Theophilus, Conley did not catch most of what Sachin had said, nor did he see the smile on his boyfriend’s face. It took a moment for him to realize that Sachin was leaving. A small wave of panic swept over him, perhaps because Theophilus was a bit more than he felt he could handle at the moment (Alexa had really done a number on Conley’s poise today). He sent an imploring look Sachin’s way just as…

And just as quickly stopped, the windows going black.

Too bad the office’s overhead light isn't on, because lumos and other lighting charms will not work.

”Bloody hell,” he exclaimed a second after the lights went out.

Praying that the tea set wouldn’t be knocked over and shatter into a million pieces, he abandoned collecting the china and reached for his wand. ”Lumos.” Nothing happened. Conley squinted at his wand. Maybe he had picked up Sachin’s or Theophilus’ by mistake. Only he didn’t remember either man putting his wand down on the desk. He gave the wand a shake, then again tried, ”Lumos!

Nothing happened. Muttering to himself, he reached over, chair rolling a little, found his desk lamp, and pulled the chain turning it on. The light illuminated the room in a small halo of light that fell on the food Theophilus had brought. ”Ambassador Singh,” he asked since Sachin was on his feet. ”Could you check - is it just the windows in here?” he asked.

To Theophilus, he asked, ”Did someone upset maintenance again?” Perhaps the other fellow knew something Conley didn’t.

Whereas Conley was seemingly flustered, Sachin was calm. He felt sorry for the Department Head what with that odd and unusual sound that was made and the third man displaying his great amount of food. Sachin was still smiling and not at all bothered about anything. Until it all went dark, of course. Just prior to that, he briefly caught the look on Conley’s face...

The Ambassador reached for his own wand, not altogether sure why Conley’s wasn’t working. At that moment, he failed to figure out why that was happening. “Lumos,’’ he said in his Indian accent and raising his wand. Nothing happened which had him frowning deeply.

Silently, he went to carry out the request Conley had made. It was dark and it was only natural that he bump into one or two articles of furniture. Mercifully, there was no major injuries. “As far as I can see, it’s not just the windows in here,’’ he announced some moments later. “I presume you’ll have to get the Magical Maintenance people, yes?’’ Since spell work didn't seem to be working.

There were a few bumps and Conley winced, hoping that Sachin hadn’t hurt himself. He sat there shaking his wand and looking at it funny as he waited for Sachin to report back. And when he did, Conley wasn’t exactly happy with the information. The flustered look on Conley face turned rather sour. ”Great, just great,” he muttered to himself.

”There’s a light switch to the left of the door, if you could flip it,” Conley said to Sachin as he debated trying to send off a patronus message or a memo to maintenance. Conley usually didn’t bother with the overhead light when the enchanted windows had sunny weather because they usually provided enough light.

Tucking his wand between his teeth, Conley took a moment to finish moving his beloved tea set off his desk so it wouldn’t get broken. He grabbed a few of the pieces and spun his chair turning to place it on the back desk/bookshelf area below Elodie’s photograph. He glanced up at the photo (knowing it was there despite being barely able to see it) as he spun back around to grab more pieces of the china. He felt a bit weird about still having her photo in the office, but he couldn’t force himself to remove it. At least he’d moved it off his desk. That was progress right? He glanced in Sachin’s direction, then back down at the desk feeling, as usual, that odd mixed feeling of guilt and shame that tended to fill him whenever he thought about Elodie with Sachin around. He quickly moved the rest of the pieces onto the tray and spun around so Sachin couldn't see his face. He deposited the remainder of the tea set safely behind him, took a millisecond to settle his emotions and turned back around.

Now that his china set was safe, Conley could concentrate on the window problem. He plucked his wand from his teeth as he decided that a patronus would simply be easier than the memo at this point. Summoning his traditional go-to memory and forming his message in his mind, Conley flicked his wand, ”Expecto Patronum…”

A weak white vapor seeped from the department head's wand and immediately evaporated. Much like the failed “lumos” charms, the Patronus charm would prove equally unsuccessful. Nor will an airplane memo take flight and hurry off. It was as if International the Magical Cooperation offices and lobby had become a magical dead zone.

Better lace up your trainers. It appears someone has a long walk to magical maintenance.

Sachin was actually quite alright. The bumps were small and minor. One would think that because he worked with the British Ministry and visited Conley’s office a bit he would have known where the items were situated. “Zaroor. Sure, I can do that.’’ He reached out a hand and felt along the wall. That switch was somewhere there, he was quite cert-

There it was. Sachin flipped it was not surprised to find that nothing happened. The Ambassador turned back in the direction of Conley and his friend, obviously oblivious to Conley’s thoughts about his dead wife. “I think it’s best you contact Maintenance.’’ Which was what Conley seemingly was about to do except that the Patronus Charm failed miserably.

“So much for that,’’ Sachin muttered, staying exactly where he was. “Maybe you should head on over to the Department, Con. Mr. Phora,’’ he added quickly to cover up the fact that he had called the man by his nickname.
