This thread is to be used for questions regarding roleplaying in Knockturn Alley. An FAQ is included below. Please read through these questions to ensure that your question is not on the list before asking your question.


1. How do you create an RP?

Firstly, be sure to read all Knockturn Alley Rules. Select a forum (Borgin & Burkes, Malfoy Manor, Vanishing Cabinet, or Salazar’s Lair) that best fits your plot. Click on the ‘New Thread’ button at the bottom of that forum. Type in your title, plot and character list, plus any particular directions you may have for joining members (such as no one-liners, all characters must be in Gryffindor, etc). Then submit it.

2. Why can’t I see the thread that I submitted?

Each thread that is submitted is sent to the Moderation Queue so that it can be approved or declined by a Knockturn Alley moderator. Until it is approved, members will not be able to see the thread.

3. How long does it take for an RP to be approved?

An RP will be approved anywhere from a few hours to a day or two, though most are done within a day. If it is approved, it is automatically sent to the forum in which you submitted the thread.

4. What happens if my RP isn’t approved?

You’ll have to resubmit it. The Knockturn Alley moderators will PM you if modifications are needed. To avoid this, however, please read all Knockturn Alley Rules to ensure that your RP meets the requirements.

5. Do you have to be sorted to play in Knockturn Alley?

No; all members (those who have 10 legitimate posts or more) are welcome to participate in Knockturn Alley

6. How do I join in an RP?

There are many threads and many subforums that are available in Knockturn Alley. Read through the plot of some of them and decide which ones interest you. If there are still character openings left, and the RP has not started, then you can post asking to join as a character (ex: if Harry Potter is still an open spot, then you can ask to play him) If the RP has started but is not very far into the story, then you can PM the thread starter of the RP and ask to join. Please note that not all join requests will be approved. If you are not approved, then do not be discouraged. Simply select another RP or start one of your own. See: How do you Create an RP? above.

7. Why was my RP moved to the inactive forum?

If your RP does not have new posts for approximately one month or so, it will be moved to the inactive forum (House of Gaunt). To reactivate the RP, simply PM an RP moderator.

8. What do I do if my RP is finished?

PM an RP moderator and we will move it to the Finished RP forum.

9. What are the ratings of each forum?

Borgin & Burks - PG.
Malfoy Manor - PG to PG13 and Advanced writing/creative writing members. (No one liners. Constructive characters and paragraphs).
Room of Requirement- PG to PG13 (ratings can change per competition)
Vanishing Cabinet - PG-PG13 (School and Ministry characters only. One thread per character. Period).
Salazar's Lair - PG13 (All SS rules still apply)

Please note that ALL SS rules still apply to each subforum.

10. What do I do if I want my RP to be deleted or renamed?

PM an RP moderator or post your request in this thread.

11. I've role-played on other sites. Do I have to work my way up through less advanced RP's before I can go into the Advanced RP subforum?

No, not at all. If you have experience roleplaying, then you're more than welcome to participate in an advanced RP. Take note, however, that you may be asked for an example of your RPing from the thread starter if they are unfamiliar with your RPing style.

So, what does this really mean?

They are just the rules of the RP section. Some new ones have been added so read them and it will be clear. Just explaining what to do and what not to do in Role Playing. Have fun!

That's entirely up to you. But you have to remember Draco would be rather old as the School RP is set way into the future. If you get what I mean.

Gracie (sorry for invading, Steph! XD): To add onto Steph's answer, yes you are free to RP Draco in KA role-plays if you wish . With the current school year set at 2068, and Draco being born in June of 1980, he would be about 88 years old. Just so you know.

Yes it is also set in the future. I believe in the Ministry RP and the School RP we are in the year 2068. So it's way in the future. There are no rules for you to change your profile, but it causes less confusion.

No! We could never expect you to be online all the time! That would be cruel. People need their sleep and we don't expect nothing less. When you log back on it's the matter of catching up. If you are completely lost, all you need to do is PM somebody who is in the same RP with you or the starter of the RP and ask them to catch you up. Then you just jump back in. Hope that helped.

Knockturn Alley: Plot Of The Week.

You are more than welcome to roleplay the characters in J.K. Rowlings' HP universe. You can either choose such a character in another member's roleplay if they are included in the list of characters or you may choose to play the character of your choosing (such as Seamus or Hannah) if you start your own roleplay.

Just remember to read all Knockturn Alley rules before you submit your roleplay.

To every RP you wish to submit yourself, yes. There are many other role-plays open for joining, though! So feel free to go and look around, maybe one of their plots will catch your eye?

If that happens, go ahead and PM a Knockturn Alley mod and we'll sort it out.

If there is a problem with a submitted role-play, someone from the KA team would contact you. So unless that's the case and you did receive a PM, I think there might have been a problem when you submitted? Hmm..

Feel free to PM one of us if you think this happened again, and resubmit your role-play.

You absolutely can, m'dear! I'll send it to the inactive section, so that in case you have a change of heart a few weeks from now you'll still have the chance to retrieve it. Otherwise, it'll be deleted in a couple of months.

First things first, make sure to read over the VC rules and guidelines; you can also check out the VC example thread if you'd like.

From there, it works the same way as any Knockturn Alley role-play submission. Go to the main Vanishing Cabinet forum, between the subform listing for the Pensieve and the 'Threads in Forum:' you'll see the 'New Thread' button. Click that. All that's left to do is put in your role-play, title and submit! It'll go into a sort of 'waiting area' while we check and (hopefully) approve it.

Find a picture that you want to use and save it to your own photo account. You can find more information here in regard to uploading your photo to your own photo account.

Once you've done that, you can copy the image code and place it into your biography.

Absolutely! Some RPs already have a list of needed characters and don't always allow 'made-ups', but more often than not you'll find a use for your own character in another RP.

Feel free to make up as many characters for as many RPs as you want, whenever you want! Also, we have a Character Archives thread in KA for character biographies if you'd like to save your characters there for future use.

That's correct. You have to upload pictures to an image site (such as - but not limited to - Photobucket or Tinypic) before posting them, otherwise taking the URL from a site you may have found the picture on is hotlinking.

You're also more than welcome to use the SS albums feature to upload pictures to, instead of using an image site!

Nope. In our Knockturn Alley forums, your imagination is free to roam. You can just make up a character and fill out a bio if the thread starter requests it. Though, keep in mind, most of our RP'ers prefer not to have Mary-Sues or Gary-Stus.

As for our school RPG/Ministry RPG, there are some restrictions on character abilities. If you have any special power or ability, you usually have to clear it with the Headmaster/Head Mod of that particular section.

Do you have to submit your RP character in the archive and get them approved before you can list them on your profile?

NOPE!
No approval needed unless you want your charrie to have a special ability. Go ahead and list in your profile. You only have to post a bio in the RP charries IF YOU WANT TO.
