Absolutly! She's given everyone something to think about. I mean look at how she started out, with nothing but a pen and paper, now she's one of the wealthiest women in the world, has all sorts of amazing contributions to society under her belt and has awakened the imaginations of everyone who has read her novels. I also think that she's used a wonderful genre to get kids reading too. A lot of great children/young adult authors stick to reality - fiction based on life. It doesn't stretch your imagination to the extent that JKR's fantasy/magic world does. Take Judy Blume for example - she's a great children's author but her books don't have the same imaginative stretches that JKR's do. I think that may also have contributed to her receiving that award. | |

Yeah,earlier,for 'people who read',it used to be people thinking'oh!they read!they are sort of different from us' and others considered you strange if you were reading a book.now,everyone is being encouraged to read,reading is sudenly the 'in thing' to do after the success of HP.For an obsessive compulsive bookworm like me,this has meant being looked at nicely for a change.Reading has suddenly become a good thing,and those who read aren't considered strange anymore.At school,being a geek is a good thing now,after Jo wrote about Hermione.
And,children love imaginative things.My little cousins are very excited about the spells and goes around saying Reducto and Protego all the time.Also,the good ideals and thoughts in the book teach children a lot of things,without boring them.I mean,kids are more likely to do the right thing if you say Harry Potter always did what he thought was right,than if you say that it is an integral part of a strong and pure moral character.
For teenagers and young adults like me-who are slowly getting disillusioned by all the cruelty and savageness of the people around them-it makes us believe that there is still some hope,some good left in the world.
Have you heard about the ITV1 documentary on Jo's life?
I'm looking forward to it!It has stuff about Jo's childhood and certain places on which she based her writing.
Ps:the day after the DH was released,there was a cartoon in the newspaper.In the cartoon,Harry was there holding a placard saying 'love conquers all' and there were kids all around him.At one corner stood a terrorist(which guns and all) who was saying to a fellow terrorist"We can take care of all the governments who are against us.But how do we stop Harry Potter?"
I think that illustrates how much we are all influenced by Harry Potter.Imagine,there are so many people worldwide who read HP,if even half of them start being a little kinder to others,and make a stand against injustice in any form,then we will have a better world. | |

I never saw that comic strip, but yes it sounds like it had a great message to it. Which in certain respect, was the underlying message of the whole series; that makes me wonder about that Laura person who was suing the board of education (amongst others) because the books promote witchcraft. Even if they did promote witchcraft, they have many other underlying messages that church DOES support! So by her not agreeing with these messages, does this mean she supports terrorism? Should we be more concerned with her than we are? |
