Japan has a wide variety of snacks that range from what you would expect to the slightly bizarre to OMG WHO WOULD ACTUALLY EAT THAT?! This thread is to showcase snacks from Japan. When possible, reviews of the snacks shall be posted as well.

Before we dive right into our first snack picture, here is a little bit of background about Kit Kats in Japan：

Now, Kit Kat bars are extremely popular in Japan and range in a wide variety of flavors that include, but are by no stretch of the imagination limited to, maple syrup, melon, vanilla bean, grape, apple, banana, caramel, kiwi, azuki, green tea, yuzu and cherry blossom. The reason for this popularity is traced back to the name Kit Kat because it is very similar to the Japanese phrase kitto katsu (きっと勝つ), which roughly translates to “You will surely win!” According to several sources, this similarity has been the cause of many parents and students buying Kit Kat bars before big exams as a sort of good luck charm. It is sometimes even written on the box that this particular Kit Kat bar was “made to give you the power to succeed.” However, the real pronunciation of the word Kit Kat is closer to kitto katto where katto is interpreted as the katakana pronunciation of the English word “cut,” so the meaning then becomes “you surely won’t make the cut.” I just love how Japan can take something as simple as a candy bar and make it such a significant part of its pop culture. OK, so maybe it is not a huge part of Japanese pop culture, but I have yet to see any connivance store, supermarket, or food stand that does not sell some sort of Kit Kat. Japan has even made prefecture specific Kit Kat bars that are only sold in that prefecture so that you can give them to people as a souvenir.

I really love kitkat!!!

one thing what makes japanese snack different from others is, every region have special flavor and sometimes it was only sold in those region. am I right?

I think you have to upload the traditional too like daifuku, dorayaki, mochi, oshiroko, dango,wagashi, yatsuhashi etc

and pocky, morinaga, koala no march, kinoko no yama, pretz, puccho candy, CHOCOBI!!!

Gosh, I was addicted to Japanese snacks

In Japan, convenience store are EVERYWHERE. In these, there is a ridiculous amount of snacks and food for you to buy and, to be honest, experiment with. On some days, I leave my work and head to the nearest Family Mart or 7-11 for a lunch and usually stick with the sandwiches when I can because the bentos can be too high in salt for me...

but...sometimes even the sandwiches are a little out there

Above is a winter-ish sandwich you can find (leading into Spring) and is exactly what you see: strawberries and whipped cream sandwich

I seriously envy countries that have convenience stores EVERYWHERE XD

When i want to go to one i have to drive 5 minutes to get to my local store and when i want to go to a really good big store its around half an hour

That does it! I'm moving to Japan! haha

.........and those strawberries whipped cream sandwhich looks yummy....i never heard of that combo =O

wonder if it actually tastes as good as it looks like xD

That sandwich is actually...pretty good

I was pleasantly surprised! Although, it isn't really something I would want to eat all the time...I like my sandwiches to have things like egg salad or katsu in them

and Japan is a very convenience store heavy society. It serves as a post office, bank, place to pay your bills...EVERYTHING. I pay my taxes there too!

Just so you all know that sushi really is what you expect sushi to look like here in Japan, here is are some of the usual suspects from dinner:

On the left you can see yaki salmon (焼きサーモン) and on the left scallop (ホタテ)

However...sometimes sushi restaurants will make...more unique flavors like...HAMBURGER SUSHI!

Of course, there has to be mayonnaise on it because Japan loves its mayo and everything - including pizza.

Pocky is one of Japan's staple snacks, usually coming in chocolate and strawberry flavor. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pocky, Pocky was first sold in 1966, and consists of a biscuit stick coated with chocolate. It was named after the Japanese onomatopoetic word for the sound Pocky makes when bitten, pokkin (ポッキン). The original was followed by "Almond Pocky" in 1971, with an almond coating, and "Strawberry Pocky" in 1977. Today, the product line includes such variations as milk, mousse, green tea, honey, banana and coconut flavored coatings, and themed products such as "Decorer Pocky," with colorful decorative stripes in the coating, and "Men's Pocky," a dark (bittersweet) chocolate and "mature" version. I will post more about this Deco Pocky when Valentine's Day rolls around

This year, Panda Pocky was released and is a chocolate biscuit with a vanilla like covering. Think Cookies and Cream ice cream as a cookie - so...like an Oreo - and you know how it tastes.

I have actually never seen these before, but the pretty red apple on the cover caught my attention. This is a NEW flavor being that it is apple - obviously. Now, when I opened the box, I was overwhelmed with the smell of maple...which confused me to no end because, well, it should smell like apple. Biting into it, however, was just like eating apple sauce! A little mini waffle tasting of apple sauce.

Verdict? とーーーてもおいしい！

And they're just snacks! How much more when it comes to real food? And I love that KitKat trend you've got there..
