Sorry! I really am sorry it took this long! Something called a Twilight Quest kinda got in the way.. oh, and work.. lol
Anywho, here's some basics on the topic of music =]
[btw Blaze I LOVE House!!!!]
--
music = ceol
listening to music = ag éisteacht le ceol
listening to cd's = ag éisteacht le dlúthcheirníní
playing music = ag seinm ceoil [playing as in you playing an instrument]
downloading music from the internet = ag íoslódáil ceoil ón idirlíon
going to music shops = ag dul go dtí siopí ceoil
concert = ceoilchoirm
going to concerts = ag dul chuig ceoilchoirmeacha
my band = mo bhanna ceoil
practising with my band = ag cleachtadh le mo bhanna ceoil
--
traditional music = ceol tíre/ ceol Gaelach/ ceol traidisiúnta
classical music = ceol clasaiceach
jazz = snagcheol
rock music = rac-cheol
heavy metal = miotal trom
pop music = pop-cheol
folk music = ceol pobail
rave music = ceol mire
--
I play = seinnim
I played = sheinn mé
I practice = bím ag cleachtadh
I practised = bhí mé ag cleachtadh
--
guitar = giotár
piano = pianó
violin = veidhlín
fiddle = fidil
bodhrán = bodhrán
drums = drumaí
keyboard = méarchlár
flute = fliúit
--
orchestra = ceolfhoireann
musician = ceoltóir
singer = amhránaí
guitarist = giotáraí
drummer = drumadóir
group = grúpa
the charts = na cairteacha
--
And I'm all out of things to say about music [had to look at an old Irish book for ideas lol]
If there's anymore please let me know!
As for now.. too much Irish makes my brain hurt...

Well, I know that the basics of knowing how to pronounce another language are knowing which letter combinations create what sounds. I dunno if that makes sense, but for example, in Polish: "ż = zi = ź = zh, ś = si =sh" So what letter combinations of Gaelic create what sounds in English?
I see that they are hard and difficult, weird combinations that don't seem to make sense, but I know these would help.
*new here*

*new here* erm.. I'm not really sure how to give pronunciations unless it's a word?
like, 'box' would be 'bosca' [bus-ka]
but then 'feiceáil' [feck-all] changes to 'fheicáil' [eck-all] depending on the word in front of it Quote:

nkk let's see if I can help with the pronunciation bit
ceolfhoireann -> k-yoll-fwir-inn [yoll as in 'yo'-l]
amhránaí agus giotáraí -> a-rawn-e [long 'a'] og-us g-yut-or-e
I'm also a drumadóir. = Is mise drumadóir freisin
mise -> mish-a
drumadóir -> drum-a-door [though really it's doo-ir]
freisin -> fresh-in
Seinnim -> shen-im
pianó - piano
veidhlín. - vy-lin [basically violin without the 'o']
That any help?

Or everything? |

Hehe well hopefully by the end, loads of us will all be able to converse as gaeilge
There's only the two of us so far that seem to be able to speak it, so I think lessons before a chat thread would be a good idea
I'm going to start the lessons off in a new thread to make things easier
I should have it up shortly [ie amárach]

oh haha this is so awesome!
I think the hardest is the pronounciation because, you know, it's totally different
Maura, would it be possible for you to also write how you pronounce the words you wrote at the top of this page? It would be reeeeeeeeeeeeally helpful |
