Lily Evans was not looking forward to Potions. It had been three weeks since she and Severus Snape had exchanged cross words. She was fortunate that Gryffindor fifth years only shared two classes with Slytherin. It was hard enough sitting at the same table with him in Charms, but working with him in Potions was the worst. He was, as ever, the gentlemen, always bringing to the table the ingredients that they’d both need. Occasionally he’d reach over to tweak her stirring technique. He was a genius at Potions. The problem was, she missed him. Especially his touch. Those seconds that their hands brushed were, at once, Heaven and Hell. Heaven because she gloried in the feeling but Hell because she knew there was no future there. Not as long as he continued following Voldemort.

When she entered, Severus was already seated at their table and, as predicted, had already gathered their items. She wanted to run to him, tell him everything would be okay. But she knew it wouldn’t. Instead, she sat down at James Potter’s table, edging Sirius Black over. At Severus’s hurt look she called, “Accio ingredients,” and watched the vials fly toward her. Her heart breaking.

Lily had followed him. She’d stolen James’ invisibility cloak and followed Severus straight out of the castle, into the dark night, and into the even darker woods, where to her great dismay he was meeting with Avery and Mulciber. She swore under her breath when she saw him greeting his fellow Death Eaters. She’d been hoping for a chance to talk with him alone, away from prying eyes. She didn’t know why she felt the need to explain her decision to date James to Severus, but somehow she felt like she owed him an explanation. An apology?

Her guilt rapidly evaporated when she saw what had drawn the Death Eaters out of the castle and into the Forbidden Forest.

“Now you,” Mulciber urged Severus.

Lily held her breath as Severus slowly raised his wand and pointed it toward a majestic deer.

“Avada Kedavra,” the corners of Severus’s lips curled up delightfully as the buck toppled forward.

Lily knew just whom Severus had been thinking of when he chose to curse the stag to death.

She’d been mistaken to think that she’d owed him any explanation. The boy she’d cared for was gone. She needed to accept it and move on.

He burns cold for me now, like Bluebell Flames. There is light in his eyes but little warmth. The corners of his lips never lift anymore. It's as if all his happiness is gone. He's buttoned up and tied down. The carefree Cokeworth summers are past. I wonder when we leave Hogwarts in a week if I will ever see him again. I look around the Main Hall, I will miss it’s warmth and camaraderie. I will miss the joyous holidays, the spectacular feasts. I will miss my Gryffindor dorm mates. I will miss Slughorn and maybe even Filch, just a little. But most of all, it is the dark gaze of once lost and now forbidden love for which I will forever long. I cast one last look at Slytherin table. He sits quietly alone. He looks up at me oddly. Our eyes lock. For an instant and, only a fraction of a breath, I see a flicker of orange in his obsidian stare and know that there is yet something more inside than simply Bluebell Flames.
