Hello I'm known as MJ around here and these drabbles are about my former SSRPG character, Ethan McCarthy. Sorted into Ravenclaw after transferring from Beauxbatons, he is now married and the father of two, also working for the German Ministry of Magic. Ethan answered the invitation with a grin. It had been a recent thrill for the boy to cruise the streets of Bastia in Jean Pierre’s Muggle sports car – quite a different experience from flying high above the city on his Firebolt 600.
But wait… “I thought you wrecked it?”
“I did… got a new one…” answered Jean Pierre between bites of croissant. “C’mon, I’ll show you,” he added on their walk to the nearly abandoned parking lot.
As they approached, Ethan grimaced upon the sight of the cumbersome clunker. “I much prefer the Ferrari.”

Transferring a week into the school year meant a private audience with the sorting hat – a musty sort of being which Ethan found to be quite odd. Squirming a bit as the dusty relic was placed on his head, the fifth year’s eyebrows struggled to reach his hairline as he listened for the hat’s verdict.
Hmm, a tricky one, I see... A bit of nerve, a kind heart, ambitious as well.. and a ready mind for what interests you most.
It's Ravenclaw for you!
Ravenclaw? Wasn’t that the house full of quick-witted bookworms?
He was definitely in the wrong house.

Ethan stepped into his bedroom for the first time back from break and green eyes searched the room, landing on the window sill and the splash of green resting there – his potted Angelica. The boy briskly walked over to it, fingers gingerly lifting the shredded leaves and assessing the damage.
Eyeing Mr. Fluffy curled up on his bed and purring almost ferociously, the 13 year old gave the bundle of fur an accusatory glare before shooing the animal away in annoyance.
“Might be nice to keep the kneazle from destroying my plants while I’m gone, Mum,” he grumbled to himself.

Amidst echoes of translating the Elder Futhark filtering through the classroom, you lean back in your seat as your eyes lazily drift towards the open window. Daydreams of skiing the Alps emerge as you stare off into the distance.. Meh.. anything would be better than sitting in this class..
“Mr. McCarthy, if you could rejoin the class and tell us the meaning of Ehwaz?”
Your eyes snap back to the professor at the front of the room as a slow flush creeps up the back of your neck. Busted.
What you would give for a Fever Fudge right about now..

Ethan wasn't sure why his alarm didn't go off this morning, but he couldn't dwell on that thought now - not when he had exactly eight minutes to get out of the castle and down to the greenhouses for Herbology class.
He had gotten dressed in record time - all except for socks. With the castle's elves missing, laundry had been left up to him and was not always completed in a timely manner. An under the bed search found several dirty socks but no time to Scourgify. A clean, yet mismatched pair from his dresser would have to do.

He hadn’t said much in the day following his visit to Hogsmeade – not to his roommate or anyone in class. Ethan just had too much on his mind that his thoughts kept him distracted enough from his daily routine.
Once the day’s classes were done, he sat on the bed in his dorm and pulled out the little black and white picture she had given him. Staring at it as the thoughts tumbled through his head, Ethan lightly ran his finger over the tiny, peanut-shaped image. His future. It was terrifying but he knew he could do this with her.

Not much of a bibliophile, Ethan was rather reluctant to visit the library, taking him a while to find it his first time there. But after his encounter with a ghost in the common room and Elliot's mention of a book that might prove helpful, he felt he had reason.
Stretched out in front of the stained-glass windows, Ethan flipped through the pages of Hogwarts, A History.
Sitting up straighter, he finally found something interesting. As he continued to read, green eyes grew wider. What kind of crackpot school did he get enrolled into?

Ethan squinted at the fenced-in clearing his fourth year class was standing around during Care of Magical Creatures. “What are we meant to be looking at?” he asked the boy next to him in a hoarse whisper.
“Thestrals.”
Right. He knew what they were, still he watched with a slightly bemused expression as the piece of raw meat his professor dangled into the clearing slowly disappeared. “How are we meant to be studying them if we can’t see them?” Ethan glanced at the boy again, just now noticing that his eyes were focused on one spot in the clearing.
Oh.

Numbers had never been his thing. Not unless they had to do with proper measurements of organic matter or soil to fertilizer ratios. But Arithmancy was an elective that filled a hole in his schedule, so he continued it after his fifth year transfer.
His experience with Arithmancy at Hogwarts so far had been odd though.
Blindly reaching into a box of wet toilet paper, chaos invoked by a drama queen ghost, a flooded classroom -- he wasn't sure what any of that had to do with the magical properties of numbers. Certainly an interesting teaching method to say the least.
