32. Common Room

Lily’s head fell forward as she dozed off for the tenth time that evening. She was sitting in the Common Room in the hope the noise other students were making would keep her awake, but no such luck.

BONK! Something tapped her on the back of her head.

“Sorry, Lily, accident!” she recognized James Potter’s voice as she swung around to face him, wide awake and furious.

“I’m trying to study here!” she announced angrily.

“Really? From this?” Sirius Black said, holding up her book. It was now blank – he had used James diversion to wipe her entire textbook blank.

31. Dress Robes

Every boy was looking at her tonight. Her new dress robes, falling in silver, shimmering waves to pool at her feet, made her resemble a mermaid emerging from the ocean.

James Potter, too, couldn’t keep his eyes off her, but his attention annoyed Lily more than it made her enjoy it. Why was he approaching her, though, and…

“Will you dance with me, Ms Evans?”

“Wh-what?” Lily managed to stammer, staring at him wide-eyed. Didn’t they hate each other?

“Dance with me,” James repeated, grinning, and this time it wasn’t a question as he pulled her onto the dance floor.

Potions Emergency!

65. Ooze

Something was wrong. Her potion really shouldn’t be doing that. It should resemble water in consistency, but instead Lily’s product was a viscuous substance that oozed out of…

“Oh, no!” she exclaimed, noticing the hole in the bottom of her cauldron. All her hard work was disappearing between the stones of the dungeon!

“Here, let me help,” a smooth voice suggested, and a simple spell quickly fixed the hole. “You added the worm tails too early.”

“You think?” Lily asked Severus Snape, but he was probably right. If there was anyone who could beat her in Potions, it was him.

Cheers and split bags

56. Fight

Oh, no. She was not going to ruin her day again. Lily’s expression emanated anger and determination as she faced Bellatrix Black.

She had just been on her way to Charms when the Slytherin had sent a spell that split her bag – for the second time that week. The first time, Lily had let it pass, not wanting to break rules, but this was too much.

”Expelliarmus!” she yelled.

“Go Evans!” someone yelled from the crowd – James Potter, if she recognized the voice correctly. She had no time to reply, though, as Bellatrix found her wand and prepared to retaliate.

A Beginning

19. Wand

Lily Evans stood in Ollivander’s alone, admiring all the boxes and wands around her. And one of these magical objects was about to be hers!

“Ah, good morning there, youg lady. Looking for a wand, I presume?” the elderly shopkeeper appeared with a smile.

“Yes, sir, for Hogwarts,” Lily smiled nervously back.

“Well then, try this,” he suggested, handing her a wand. She waved it around.

Nothing happened.

“How about 11 inches, holly, dragon heartstring?” he handed her another one.

She felt a strange sensation when she held it, like she was finally whole. It felt right.

It was right.

Secret Admirer

58. Hoot

The owl hooted once in thanks as Lily let it out of the window. Then, she sat down, staring at the latest letter from her ‘secret admirer’. They had been pen pals for almost a month now, and she still had no idea who he was.

Hazel eyes watched her from across the room. James enjoyed their daily exchanges, knowing the redhead he loved would never be so open with him were she to know his identity.

And sooner or later he knew this dream would dissolve, once she found out he was on the receiving end of her letters.

Unspoken

81. Depression

Lily stared out blankly through the Common Room window, feeling more homesick than she had in years. And it was all because of James Potter.

“You shouldn’t worry about him, you know,” Remus Lupin advised sitting down beside her. “He’s always going to be a prick, but he never meant to hurt you.”

Lily offered him a sad smile, nodding.

James stood behind her, unnoticed, wishing she would listen to his friend. That she would listen to him, so he could finally tell her how he really felt instead of having to pull pranks on her to get her attention.

Unfocused

21. Veela

“James Potter! What in Merlin’s name do you think you’re doing?!”

James turned a pair of dazed hazel eyes to look at his girlfriend Lily Potter.

“What?” he asked stupidly.

“You were ogling. At that Veela over there,” Sirius briefed him, barely able to maintain a straight face. “And I don’t think Lily liked it.”

“Of course I didn’t like it, what girlfriend would like to see her man drooling over another woman?!” Lily exclaimed.

“Well, technically, it’s a Veela-“ James began, but stopped, seeing Lily’s expression. “You’re right, honey, it’s all my fault. It’ll never happen again, I promise.”

Tripping and Insults

25. Sorting Hat

A loud THUMP echoed through the Great Hall as a small Severus Snape was tripped up.

“You did that on purpose!” Lily Evans said angrily, standing in front of James Potter at the Gryffindor table. “For all that sneakiness, the Sorting Hat should have placed you in Slytherin!”

Immediately, both boys scowled at her.

“Don’t insult my house!” Snape managed.

“First, tell me what in Merlin’s name was it thinking putting a know-it-all like you in Gryffindor?” James demanded with a cheeky wink.

Lily stalked off to the opposite end of the table, leaving Severus to fend for himself.

Weddings and Stars

5. Astronomy

“Centaurs claim they can read the future from the stars, you know,” Lily heard a whisper in her ear as James passed by. “Lemme see.”

She leaned back, allowing him access to look through the telescope. They were working in pairs, studying for their NEWTs that were coming up at the end of the year. And finally, she and James were together.

“So, what do you see?” she asked him, hugging him from behind when the Professor turned his back on them.

He looked back at her, a completely serious expression decorating his handsome features.

“Our wedding,” he replied simply.

Revenge for Pranks

71. Untie

“What in Merlin’s name do you think you are doing?!” Lily exclaimed.

She had thought it was an empty classroom, but no. It was full – of the four Marauders, as they liked to call themselves. Tying up a student who dared pull a prank on them earlier.

“Oh, Evans, can’t you just turn around and pretend you haven’t seen anything?” Sirius asked, rolling his eyes.

“We’ll be done here soon, promise,” James assured her.

Lily stared at them as if she were seeing them for the first time in her life. They wanted her to cover for them?!

“Untie him!”

Plain to see

15. Room

Lily sighed wistfully, looking out of her window.

“Stop mooning over him and go do something about it,” Clarissa, her friend and dorm-mate at Hogwarts of the past six years, muttered, closing her book with a snap.

“What?” the redhead turned around.

“James,” Clarissa raised her eyebrows. “Don’t tell me that he isn’t the one on your mind. Everyone can see it apart from you two.”

“See what?” Lily asked.

“That you’ve fallen in love with him.”

“No!” the girl protested, but there was hesitance in her voice.

“And that he’s loved you since the first day he saw you.”

A new year and a new friend

41. Thestrals

Lily stared at the skeletal creatures. She had never noticed that the carriages were pulled by something, but now, at the start of her last year in Hogwarts, she saw them.

“Who was it?” A low, quiet voice asked.

She turned to see James behind her. They had struck a sort of truce at the end of the previous year, and he was obviously making an attempt at friendliness.

“My grandmother,” she replied, just as quietly.

“I’m sorry,” he said, taking her hand for a moment to squeeze it reassuringly. Looking up at him, Lily felt sure he meant it.

Guesses and Epiphanies

37. Animagus

Lily’s eye was caught by a sudden movement down on in the grounds below. A shadow moving towards the Whomping Willow, a student. The Gryffindor frowned, suspecting she knew exactly who that was - she had kept count of Remus’ frequent disappearances lately.

She was about to look away, accurately guessing Remus was going to hide somewhere to change without endangering others. But then she spotted three other students following, stopping... and changing shape. Then she could see only two, a dog and a stag.

A stag that looked exactly like James’ Patronus had last week when she’d caught him practicing.

Dead of Night

46. Dungeon

“Where are we going? He’ll find us here!” Lily hissed angrily to James as they hurried down into the dungeons, Filch close on their heels.

“But we’d waste time opening the door, he’d catch us,” James panted. He’d been trying to leave the castle to accompany Remus to the Willow when Lily caught him sneaking out and followed.

“Now what?” Lily snarled as they skidded to a halt behind a corner.

“Now we’re safe,” James muttered as he unravelled his cloak and, pulling Lily close with one arm, covered them both just as Filch’s face appeared, sneering in the lamplight.

Doubt

69. Slap

“What have I done this time?” James followed a fuming Lily across the grounds.

“James, you’re a Prefect, you can’t keep picking on people!”

“That’s all?”

“What are you talking about?” green eyes dared him to continue - she knew what he was thinking.

“It’s because it’s Snape. You always defend him - admit it, you have feelings for him.”

Lily narrowed her eyes and SLAP! her hand connected with his cheek. She was sick of having to defend herself when James was the one in the wrong - especially since recently she was starting to agree with him.

A Proposition

45. Torch

Lily could see the flaming torch approach from the living room window. Why on earth would someone be walking around with a torch instead of using their wands? Unless...

“It’s Malfoy,” James muttered through gritted teeth, his hand on her shoulder.

“He’s here for us, isn’t he. He’ll want us to join them,” she said, her words being more a statement than a question. The flaming torch was a tradition among the Death Eaters, their way of announcing their intent before it was even stated, their way of inviting others to join them.

And now Voldemort wanted them, the Potters.

White Recollection

29. Pensieve

The bowl taunted him with swirling memories.

She looked radiant in the pearly dress, walking down the aisle, copper hair gleaming red and gold in the autumn sunshine.

He hated him, he was jealous of him… yet he couldn’t help but feel that Lily would be in safe hands. James loved her, and he could keep her safe; that was all that mattered.

Severus turned away before the couple began to exchange their vows. He didn’t think he could bear that. He Disapparated with a whirl of his cloak, cold biting his cheeks where the wind cooled his tears.

Transformations

61. Kiss

Sirius raised his glass.

“I’ve been friends with James since what feels like forever, and like any self respecting best friend, I always claimed that nobody would ever be good enough for him. Then I started noticing the effect his charming bride has on him. Sure, I accuse her of stealing my best friend half the time - but when she does let him out of her sight, he’s a better person than he ever was before he fell in love with Lily, and for that - well, thanks, Lily.”

Sirius watched alongside the other guests as the groom kissed the bride.
