1. Herbology

Carl wasn’t a naughty kid. However, that day, he felt creative and drew things on the walls. Art develops the brain, so it was a good thing, right?

Wrong. His aunt and uncle gave him a long lecture about something called vandalism and finally sent him to work in the garden.

While his guardians watched from the living room window, Carl began trimming the flowerbeds. His aunt’s shears feeling awkward in his hand, he cut the grassy edges horizontally and vertically. It was like giving somebody a haircut. The sun shined relentlessly onto his sweaty back.

But this was fun.

100. Homework

“The ceiling of the Great Hall is bewitched to look like the outside sky.” Carl read aloud from Hogwarts: A History. He had given himself an assignment: to read through his text books before going to school. There was much he had to learn, seeing as he had discovered the Wizarding World only a couple of months ago.

Grabbing a chocolate chip cookie from a plate in front of him, Carl took a bite, immersed in the description of the Great Hall. Another crunch brought cookie crumbs dropping all over the book. He swept them away clumsily, turning the page.

97. Dictionary

“And I’ve duelled an Auror last year. You can imagine the kind of cool injuries I’ve gotten while doing all those things.” He continued.

Carl stared at Yoongi. The store was noisy, with some owls ruffling their feathers and others hooting for attention, but he was absorbed by the older boy’s account of his adventures at Hogwarts. Just to clarify, though … "How do you 'duel'? And what is an Auror?"

He needed a dictionary, one that explained all Wizarding terms. But for now, he could only ask questions. The Seventh Year finally spoke, “Are you a Muggleborn as well?”

96. Socks

Carl sat down on his four-poster bed with a flomp. It was his first night at Hogwarts and he was amazed by everything that had happened in the past 12 hours – walking through a wall and onto Platform 9 3/4, riding the Hogwarts Express and meeting a hag, getting Sorted into Hufflpuff, and of course, the food fight that followed.

It was all exciting, but Carl was glad to be in his new Dormitory. The soft glow from the lamps gave a cozy feeling of warmth. He took out his favorite wool socks and put them on. He was home!

40. Spell

The door to the Charms room was closed shut with a loud bang. Carl looked around frantically, wondering what was going on. First, there was no professor. Second, they were … locked in the room? Third, a voice was being played out with directions for the lesson.

They were to use the unlocking charm Alohomora and the locking charm Colloportus to complete the task. Carl was definitely panicking now. Although he had read about these two spells from his text book, he had never done any real magic before. He wanted to succeed, but had no confidence to do so.

36. Muggle

Muggle. It sounded strange, foreign, unfamiliar. Yet his parents, aunt and uncle were all Muggles. He thought he was a Muggle until a couple of months ago.

Carl looked out his window at the Muggle World. This was his world, where he had lived for his entire life. He turned his attention back to his half-packed trunk. He was about to leave for Hogwarts. He was about to leave his Muggle World and his lovely Muggle family and friends behind..

While he was excited to be a wizard, he was also disappointed that he could no longer be a Muggle.

33. Classroom

Astronomy was a lesson Carl was definitely looking forward to. He had studied it a bit in primary school, so at least he knew what he was dealing with.

However, he did not expect the classroom to be like – this. The air was cold for a September night and the Hufflepuff shivered slightly. As he moved towards the desks, he smelled something bad. Something that reminded him of dung. The thing that surprised him the most was that he was actually bouncing. Hey, he could even jump over his desk!

The universe (and Hogwarts classrooms) would always be a mystery.

30. Feast

Yes! He was in Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff – the laid back House that prefers loyalty and hard work. Carl smiled widely as he joined the table adorned with a gold and black banner. Now that the anxiety of the Sorting Hat Ceremony was over, all that was left was to enjoy the feast and take a good night’s sleep.

Or not. Students in other Houses began throwing bits of food at each other. That was actually quite fun and Carl had half a mind to throw some himself, when it began to rain. A thunderstorm Inside the Great Hall. This was unexpected.

26. Quill

It was not as if he was scared or anything. Carl did not like violence, that was all. The discussion about pressure points already made him feel uneasy, now they had to fight dummies.

He picked his quill up and continued to jot down notes from the board. They would be useful if somebody was going to attack him. He just had to like, not panic.

With that thought in mind, Carl put down his quill and packed his things away. He had decided to go for the eyes and torso, but if he failed, that was okay with him.

25. Sorting Hat

The first thing Carl noticed was how battered and old the Sorting Hat was. He had always imagined it to be fancy and well cared for – after all, it was an artefact representing Hogwarts.

There was not much to see when the Hat was placed on top of his head … and over his eyes. Glad that he did not have to look at the older students, he stared instead at the black and dirty inside of the Hat.

Carl could not make out what the Hat was muttering. He did hear the final word though, shouted out loud.

“Hufflepuff!”

19. Wand

Carl walked into the shop excitedly. He tried and failed to contain his excitement – he was getting his wand! Having a wand was going to be amazing, he just knew it.

When his turn arrived after a lot of complicated measurements, the shopkeeper walked over with a box in his hands, revealing the wand within. “Take this and give it a wave.” He instructed.

The boy, enchanted by the beauty of the wand, took it and instantly felt warmth stretching from his fingertips to the rest of his body. He waved the wand and knew that it had chosen him.

17. Cauldron

He squinted at the instructions on the board, but everything was … blurry.

Well, he would have to rely on his memory of watching Ilia brew the antidote. Carl first crushed the Bezoar into a very very fine powder, accidentally crushing his finger during the process. Then, humming a little tune, he dumped the whole lot straight into his cauldron.

After a glance at the rest of his ingredients, he decided to work with the Standard Ingredient thing next. Two measures were added to the cauldron, then after some consideration, one more joined the mixture.

He was just so generous.

15. Room

So there was a Music Classroom at Hogwarts. Carl discovered it while exploring the castle late one afternoon.

Bam bam bam, bam bam bam!

He paused at the entrance to the room and listened to the music being played. It was the Star Wars theme song! His favourite film of all time! He stood there for a moment, enchanted by the wondrous melody. After he came to his senses, he walked into the room, determined to find out who this musician was.

It was his friend Mel. Carl grinned brightly and when the performance was over, said, “You. Are. Brilliant.”

13. Quidditch

It was cold. Carl was fine with a brisk wind every now and then, but it was his very first Flying lesson. What if he got blown away? That is, if he succeeded in getting into the air in the first place.

The first task was to pick up the broom. It was not as easy as it sounded. They were to tell their brooms “UP” so that they jumped into their hands.

Stretching out his hand, Carl said, “Uh – up. Up.” The broom stayed still, as if it was ignoring him. Ugh, he was never going to play Quidditch.

12. Charms

The Great Charms Challenge. Carl had been extremely nervous before his first Challenge, practicing spells over and over again. Despite his efforts to remain calm, he could not get rid of his growing anxiety.

As he arrived at the door to the Ever Changing Practice Room, he heard screams coming from inside. Somebody was in there and needed his help! The Hufflepuff read the note on the door. It stated that he had to save Ken and Barbie from the locked room, which was on fire.

Inhaling deeply, he pointed his wand at the doorknob and said clearly, “Alohomora.” Click!
