"You should call him Harper since he likes the Harp so much. In the baby name dictionary or whatever it said that the name means player of the Harp," Amelia interjected as her parents argued about what to name her baby brother.

The boy was due to be Christened tomorrow but both of her parents were refusing to budge about his name, and had been for approximately a year. In all honesty it was driving Amelia nuts, and their fighting made the baby cry, which annoyed her even more.

If her parents couldn't agree soon Amelia would take drastic measures.

This drabble is inspired by my fruitless endeavours to learn Kanji today. Back to the studying of radicals I shall go.


"I never, ever thought I'd say this, but learning Kanji is worse than Ancient Runes," Amelia whined as she banged her head against the table. She'd already learnt the kana and had figured out radicals for learning the Kanji, but she'd never anticipated it would be this hard.

In fact attempting to learn Kanji was a painful, and seemingly fruitless mission that had Amelia questioning her sanity, and wishing she was doing Ancient Runes instead. At least that class didn't make her feel as if she'd been studying for ages for no reason at all.

Amelia absolutely loathed studying Kanji.

If anyone had of told her that she'd be playing Marco Polo around a dangerous tree during Winter Amelia would have scoffed at them. Yet that's exactly what she was doing. Playing Marco Polo with her boyfriend, who had been far too busy of late what with taking every single class the school offered to spend much time with her, around the Whomping Willow while the snow fell around them.

Although their game was childish Amelia couldn't help but enjoy it. For some reason, due to Isaac and the falling snow, this muggle childrens game had come to feel magical.

The smoke from the fire surrounded them, so thick that one couldn't see through it, and inhibited any plans of escape. The fire had reached the room through the door, blocking the only conceivable exit, there was the window but she was too little to climb up to it. They were trapped and oxygen was becoming a serious problem, her sister, who'd been shielding her from the smoke had already fallen into unconsciousness, and Amelia didn't doubt that she'd soon follow.

All she could hope for was that the firemen would reach the house quickly and put out the blaze.

"I'm not touching it," Amelia said, when she was presented with the sunglasses.

"I don't use portkey's, I don't like portkey's and I wont take one no matter how much you glare at me," she informed the group of friends that were attempting to get her to go with them for a birthday surprise.

She was finally of age but she was in no mood to play along with their birthday wishes for her. All she wanted to do was go outside and play with Harper, maybe go shopping.

Touching an accursed portkey most definitely wasn't one of those things.

Amelia sighed in frustration as she looked down at her baby brother. She'd taken him outside for some much needed fun and sunshine and now she was looking down at him while he cried due to irritation.

He'd been crawling around the meadows surrounding their house, chasing butterflies and whatnot, and Amelia hadn't thought much of it. But now she could see the rash on his hands and knees from where he'd touched the grass.

"Calm down sweetheart," Amelia cooed as she got out the paste to sooth his rash, making a note to check with the doctor about allergies.

Amelia bounced around back stage, waiting impatiently for her turn to come. This would be her first Estedford and she was impatient to go on stage. She had her leotard on, along with her pointe shoes, now all she had to do was wait for the current performance to end.

The curtains closed on the dancers, and it was Amelia’s chance to shine and show her parents that the ballet lessons were worth the expense.

As the first strains of Claire De Lune began to play Amelia took a breath and got into position, ready for the curtain to rise.

“If you can't take the heat, don't tickle the dragon," Amelia murmured walking into the fourth year girls Common Room. It would be her last time entering this familiar place as her parents were transferring her to Hogwarts for the next school year.

She didn't understand why they were doing this to her, and she wasn't looking forward to the change. Sure it might be a good adventure, and her mothers cousin might have loved her time at the school, but Amelia would miss it here where she knew everyone. Never mind that Amelia had applied for the transfer herself.

“I hate you,” Amelia screamed as she glared at her boyfriend. “I hate you. And I hate your Hufflepuff tendencies, and your job and I hate living with you,” she finished coldly.

She wasn’t sure why she was mad at him.

And she hated that fact. The fact that she knew that she was wrong to be screaming at him. Knew she was in the wrong when she said she hated him. What she hated most of all though, was that she knew he’d forgive her for this.

Sometimes, sometimes she wished he wouldn’t forgive her, that he'd leave instead.

“Issy! Issy!” Amelia called out as she spotted Isaac entering the Great Hall. She hadn’t seen him in a few days and so wanted to get his attention so they could sit and talk together. They didn’t even need to talk, she just wanted to be around him really.

Only… he wasn’t paying attention to her. And she knew that he’d seen her, he’d looked at her after all. So why wasn’t he coming to her?

“Issy!” she tried again, thinking that maybe he hadn’t realised it was her calling for him, she’d never called him Issy before after all.

She’d told Isaac that they weren’t over, that they would be alright. Truth be told though Amelia didn’t know if they would. How did she go about forgiving him for kissing another girl? She knew it was a mistake, she knew that Isaac telling her was probably a good thing. But at the same time…

Amelia rolled over in bed, shutting her eyes and trying to forget the awful events of the day. She didn’t want to ponder her relationship at the moment. Right now she wished she could pretend that nothing had happened to destroy her already fractured world.

Amelia’s blood roared in her ears as she leant back against the door, keeping it firmly shut with her body. She was just so tired. Tired of school, tired of pretending that she was happy with her life and relationships.

In the past months she felt as if she’d aged by a decade. Her skin, once so tan was now pale, almost sickly so, she’d lost weight, and her eyes were shadowed, all giving her the appearance of someone much older.

And yet no-one seemed to notice, or care. All of them, including Isaac, happy to believe in the façade.

28. Timeturner

Amelia looked through the scrapbook that held memories of her time at Hogwarts and smiled sadly. Those days were full of hope for the future. There was love too, even if tinged with hurt. There was still love of course, but it just didn’t seem the same.

She wished she had a time turner and could go back to her school years. Back to a time before she had to worry about things in the real world. But she couldn’t, and she probably shouldn’t do so. She has a good life, but it doesn’t stop her yearning for the past.

Amelia stared at the book her parents had given her with complete disgust. It wasn’t the book was necessarily a bad one, but she hated what it symbolised. It was a symbol of the fact that her parents weren’t going to relent, that they were serious about her changing schools.

Amelia threw the book away from her, uncaring if it was damaged, before stalking out of her room to find Harper. He at least didn’t want her to go away to that stupid school.

In her room the book lay open at the title page which read; Hogwarts: A History.

When Amelia had gotten her mother’s owl she hadn’t wanted to believe that the contents of her letter were true. She’d been unsuccessfully trying to convince herself that this was all a nightmare for the past few weeks but now she had to face the truth. Her brother, the little boy that had brought light back into her family, who she had adored, and in turn been adored by, lay pale and still in the coffin before her. The pain she felt roared through her body and it took all she had not to collapse in complete and utter despair.

Amelia shoved her belongings back into her suitcase unable to quell the rage she was feeling enough to put things back neatly. She couldn’t believe her mother. How dare she speak about Isaac like that? How dare she question Amelia’s decision to agree to his proposal and suggest that he was beneath her?

Seeing a picture of the two of them Amelia picked it up and threw it at the door, feeling satisfaction when the glass smashed. She’d been looking forward to seeing her family, now all she wanted was to get as far away from her mother as possible.

When Amelia was younger she never would have dreamed that her mother would end up like this. In the past she’d been a loving woman. Perhaps she could be slightly detached at times but she’d been a doting mother, always there for Amelia and her siblings. The woman before her now was barely recognisable. Gone was the loving mother, replaced by a bitter Harpy. Looking into her eyes Amelia could spot no hint of the person her mother once was. Her heart broke for herself and her family. But most of all it broke for the woman she once knew.

When Isaac told her that he was qualified as an Auror Amelia smiled, kissed his cheek and told him she was proud of him. She got dressed up, went out with him and celebrated his achievement, smiling and laughing all night. Pretended it was the best news she’d ever heard.

It wasn’t until Isaac was ensconced in bed, deeply asleep that she let the pretence slip for a few minutes while in the shower. In the morning she’d put the mask back up, keep up the pretence that she was happy. For now though Amelia would allow herself to cry.

82. Careful

“You need to be more careful,” Amelia scolded as she hugged Harper to her. “You could have gotten hurt, and you scared me half to death,” she said, pulling back slightly to look into his eyes, making sure he understood the seriousness of the situation. She’d been tasked with looking after the three year old and had only lost sight of him for a few seconds, enough time for him to cause utter chaos. “I know you like the lights on the Christmas tree but it’s not a toy,” she finished, as she hugged him tighter beside the toppled tree.

She’d gotten into a design school in Paris. When Amelia had applied she hadn’t necessarily expected to get in, which is why she’d also applied for University at her parents urging, but she had. She almost couldn’t believe it and pinched herself a few times to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. But the letter was real and when it sank in she let it drop to the floor, running to find a pen and paper. She had to let Isaac know that they’d actually be living in the same country and to look at apartments large enough for them both.

83. Fearful

Amelia rocked back and forth, attempting to soothe Harpers fearful cries. Her parents were screaming at each other, both furious over the events of the night and the yelling could be heard from her little brothers room. Did they know that he heard every word they spoke in anger? If they didn’t would they care if she told them? Their father might, but Amelia was sure her mother would be dismissive and change the topic. The vitriol in their voices scared her and she wondered how Harper would cope when she left and no one was around to comfort him.

56. Fight

She’d been preparing for this all day, all month if she was being perfectly honest. Amelia had planned everything down to the last moment. But of course it didn’t go the way that Amelia had anticipated. Nothing did lately.

While she’d been spoiling for a fight, letting her anger and hurt simmer since the last time they’d seen each other, it seemed Isaac had been doing just the opposite. He was calm and happy to see her, acting as if nothing was wrong. She almost hated it because as soon as she saw him she forgot everything, including her hurt.

62. Amortentia

Amelia felt like she’d downed a bottle of Amortentia as she looked down at the man that was down on one knee in front of her. She’d thought that she couldn’t love him more than she already did but today he’d proved her wrong. Her heart was full to bursting and her throat felt tight with emotion as she looked down at him, not truly believing she’d heard his question correctly. But she must have, because she could see the ring.

“Yes, I will marry you,” Amelia stated happily, watching in awe as Isaac slid the ring onto her finger.

46.Dungeon

The dungeon walls were closing in around her. She could feel them getting closer and she could feel her throat tightening up as she struggled to get breath into her lungs and failed. Pushing herself up from where she’d been working Amelia made her way over to the door, frantically trying to get it to open.

She needed to get out.

Now.

As she failed to get the door open tears trickled down her cheeks and she couldn’t stop the panic welling up within her as the familiar black dots clouded her vision. As everything faded to black Amelia screamed.

12. Charms

Amelia stared up at her mama in awe, unable to believe how beautiful she was. She was sure that her mother was the most beautiful and charming woman in the world. Or that’s what papa said. He told her that her mother had many charms, and Amelia strove to be like her in every way.

“I want a dress like mamas,” she declared precociously to the tailor who was measuring her and her mother for new dresses for the Christmas ball. Amelia wanted everyone to know that she was her mothers’ daughter and was happy when mama nodded her assent.
