Tonks said that she didn't care that Remus Lupin was a werewolf. But what happens when she sees him as a wolf for the first time?

Finally getting to be with Remus Lupin was a dream come true. Of course, I still had to follow his ground rule: stay inside when the full moon is up. Like that was going to stop me from begging him to let me watch from my home as he endured “that time of the month”.

“Why do you keep asking when you know what my answer will be?” Remus complained in my kitchen one night. “I won’t put you in jeopardy. Case closed.”

To that, I argued, “I put my life on the line every day with the Order! You know that I love you. My love won’t mean as much if you don’t let me see you at your worst!”

He seemed to go through a change of heart, but he gave me an adamant, “No. No. No!”

Remus glanced at the full moon outside, with darkness closing in around it. The transformation was coming too quickly for his comfort. His fear gave way to panic. “Merlin’s beard! I shouldn’t be anywhere near you right now… Tonks, whatever you do, do not try to find me!” Then he frantically rushed outdoors.

Well, I’d seen that tactic before. Whenever you tell someone not to do something, they’re bound to do it anyway! So, I sat and listened for a sign that he’d fully transformed. After the signal came, I could go out and observe him.

The first thing I heard was his howl. It rose like a song, melodious but eerie. Beckoning. Calling to me. I had to answer. Walking to the back door, I began pursuing the wolf. As there wasn’t much room in my backyard, it was easy to spot him, with his gray fur and yellow eyes. He was sniffing the ground, looking for prey. I decided not to risk it all just yet and watched from inside. I had to make sure he couldn’t see me before I followed. Within a minute, his ears perked up and he pawed away, having smelled something. I apprehensively moved outside to the backyard, taking slow and deliberately quiet steps.

Remus strolled from the backyard to the front yard, then to the neighborhood sidewalk, tailing a beautiful border collie. I found a big bush to kneel behind and continued watching, peeking out the side of the bush. The dog didn’t notice him until it was too late. I cowered in horror when the wolf hunched over, pinned her down, and bit into her fur coat. I had to distract myself from her whimpers, from seeing blood being shed, so I retreated back into the bush. But I still heard everything.

When it seemed like all was done, I looked back in the direction of the fight. The dog was clearly dead, but the wolf had abandoned her and found a squirrel to eat. It hung lifelessly in his mouth. The sight set my nerves on edge, causing the leaves of my bush to rustle with noise. That’s when Remus saw me. He dropped the squirrel, growled inhumanely, and bared his teeth. The yellow eyes glared at me hungrily. In that instant, I knew what it was like to be hunted.

Run!

My legs took me as fast as they could go. He had no problem keeping up with me, pushing on all fours with all the energy he could muster. We weren’t far from my home, but I wouldn’t feel calm until I reached the front door. Remus was right behind me every step of the way. I’d have been happy about that… if he were in human form.

I was at the door in no time and I fumbled for the house key. However, as with every Muggle horror movie, I was too paralyzed to focus. I banged on the door, shouting for somebody to let me in. Eventually, I came to my senses and took the key from under the welcome mat, but not before I felt his breath surrounding my feet. In a streak of stupidity, I backed into him. Remus stood up on two legs and clawed me violently on the side of my forehead, knocking me over (Probably the first time I hadn’t managed to do it myself!). Since I’d already suffered the horrific wrenching sensation of the Cruciatus curse, the pain wasn’t too sharp, yet it drew blood. I wasn’t dumb enough to remain sitting. I got on my feet, turned the key in the doorknob, and found refuge inside. Remus scratched on the door, snarling. My heart was pounding hard, though I felt like laughing and saying, I love you, darling, but you’re not getting a Tonks sandwich today. Sorry!

Hehehe... tonks sandwich!

Wow. Chilling. Poor Tonks. Good thing there was no Tonks sandwich either.

That has got to be freaky for Tonks. And she still has humor. Tonks sandwich? cute.

I decided to crash on the couch and stay awake for when he returned to being human, but that proved unsuccessful. Sleep crept up on me soon enough. The sun shined when I awoke, and I knew that Remus would be back to himself by now. I went outside to find him near my home, sleeping in the grass, curled up in a ball like a tame wolf would do. Every trace of the bloodthirsty werewolf had disappeared. Lying there was the frail man whom I loved dearly, scars and all. I sat on the ground and softly lifted his arms, wanting to see if he’d inflicted any harm on himself lately. It broke my heart to think of him deliberately doing that, to think that he loathed his own being. He clearly saw a different person than I saw in him. Thankfully, there were no fresh marks. I ran a finger on the faded ones as if I could make them vanish.

“You really don’t know how brave and perfect you are,” I whispered, hoping Remus could hear it. He kissed my hand to show that he was listening.

Opening his eyes, they darted to my injured forehead. His eyebrows creased with agony. “Did I…”

I nodded. “Yeah. It’s nothing to worry about, though, Remus.”

“Nothing to worry about!?!” he exclaimed, sitting up. “Not only did you disobey me, but I could’ve killed you!”

Overcome by a wave of guilt, I said, “It won’t happen again. I just wanted to see things the way you saw them, because, technically, I’m missing out on part of your life. It’s what makes you… you.”

He smiled meekly. “Your hair looks wonderful. Almost as wonderful as your heart.”

After blushing like a little girl, I offered him my arm for support. Then we rose to our feet and we walked towards my home. Very soon, it would be Remus’ home, too.

That's so cute! Best couple ever! Hoep nothing else bad happens to her.

[Author’s note: This is where it refers to, and looks almost identical, to the chapter “Painting a Picture” from my Remus/Tonks fanfic, “Shaded With Patience”. It’s not really adventurous now, but then again… their whole relationship is an adventure, isn’t it?]

I grabbed a ragged cloth from the linen closet and a bottle of essence of dittany from the kitchen, for my forehead wounds. Back in the living room, I settled on the couch with Remus, laying the cloth on one knee and putting a few drops of the medicine onto it.

“Let me,” he insisted. Water formed behind his hazel eyes. He took the cloth and gingerly dabbed at my cuts. Then he set the cloth and bottle on the small table to the right of us. “I don’t get it. You should want to break it off with me, after what just happened.”

I gave him a big, goofy smirk. “Remus Lupin, it’s going to take more than that to get rid of me.”

“You’re impossible,” he joked lovingly.

I buried my head in his shoulder, which I’d done many times before. What can I say? I was so comfortable resting on him.

“Tonks, do you realize that it’s been two years since we met?”

I beamed at him for remembering. “How could I forget?” That first tender moment we’d shared as strangers had been something out of a fairytale.

Remus continued: “Even then, I knew you were going to be different from the other people in my life. All the time we spent getting to know each other proved it. Despite keeping my distance, I still loved you. And look at where we are now. ” He pushed away a strand of my hair. “I’m getting into my middle-age years. And let’s face it; I may be killed soon.”

Tears suddenly poured out of me. “Oh, please don’t talk like that!” I pleaded. Just the thought of losing Remus already was too horrible.

He wiped the tears off my face. “I didn’t mean to upset you,” he said softly. “But there’s a war being fought as we speak. What do you say we make up for lost time?”

I sat up immediately. “Remus… what are you asking?”

“Marry me, Nymphadora Tonks.”
