Chapter Eighteen

The Halloween feast was magnificent as always. However, it was spent for Draco worrying about this mystery bride and glancing at Hermione. It was spent for Hermione glancing at Draco. It was spent for Harry and Luna glancing at each other. The four of them could hardly taste the fantastic food because they were so wrapped up in what the other was doing.

After the feast, Dumbledore told them all that curfew had been extended tonight till one in the morning. They were all allowed to be out on the grounds or out of their common rooms. So, naturally, everyone moved out by the lake and began mingling. Hermione found herself in a group with Harry, Ron, Abrielle, Ginny, Neville, and Luna. Harry and Luna were rather happy to be in the same group together, but Hermione was distressed that Draco was stuck in a group of Slytherins. She glanced over and saw that Pansy Parkinson flirting with Draco and had to resist the urge to walk over and take Draco away from them. Draco, she noticed, kept glancing over at her as well. He had nothing to worry about. Ron was taken, after all, and so was Neville. Harry, well, he was just Harry; he wouldn’t be flirting with Hermione like Pansy was with Draco.

Hermione shifted her attention away from Draco and back into the conversation that was going on. Ginny was saying, “So, I think we need to find Luna a boyfriend!”

Hermione nodded. “Sounds like a fantastic idea to me,” she agreed.

“Hmm,” Ginny began, “Who could we possibly think of?”

Harry was becoming thoroughly agitated by this conversation. After all, Luna had a boyfriend.

“What about that Hufflepuff boy…what was his name…Chris Cambridge?” Ginny suggested. “He’s good-looking. What do you think Luna?”

Luna shifted awkwardly. “Oh, erm, no I don’t think I’d like him much.” She glanced over at Harry, not knowing what to do.

“You know who else needs someone to be with?” Hermione said suddenly.

“Who?” asked Ginny.

“Harry!” Hermione shrieked.

“Oh,” Harry said, blushing. “No, I don’t think so….” He trailed off. He, too, glanced over at Luna.

“Hold on,” Ginny said. “I think I’ve got just the person. I’m going to go get her!” She started to run off and was stopped by Harry’s yell.

“NO!” he yelled loudly. Everyone froze and looked at Harry, wondering why he had made such a scene.

“Harry, it’s not that big of a deal,” Ginny said, staring worriedly at him.

“Yeah,” Hermione agreed, her brow furrowed in Harry’s direction.

“Yeah it is!” Harry said, still angry. Luna glanced at him and knew what was coming just before it hit her. “I already have a girlfriend.”

Everyone looked at him. Ron was astounded. “No you don’t, mate. Well, you haven’t told ME about anyone, anyway.”

“Well, who is it then?” Hermione asked curiously.

“It’s me,” Luna said quietly.

Chapter Nineteen

Everyone stared at Luna with eyes wide open. No one could quite find the words, and, frankly, no one wanted to be the first one to say something. They all looked around at each other nervously, and then to Harry and back and forth between him and Luna. Finally Harry cleared his throat and spoke. “Erm, yeah, it’s Luna, guys. Luna and I have been together for a while now.”

Hermione was dumbfounded. She and Draco hadn’t been the only secret relationship going on in Hogwarts this year! She finally found her words. “How long have you been going out?” she asked, still in a state of shock.

“Not very long,” Luna said, “But still enough for it to matter; since the end of September.”

Harry looked at Luna. “Look, guys, we’d kindly appreciate it if you didn’t abuse us too much about it. That’s the whole reason we didn’t tell anyone in the first place.” He looked down at his feet and suddenly found Luna by his side, grasping his hand lightly. He smiled, glad that she wasn’t embarrassed to be with him. Everyone smiled; seeing them together made it seem okay.

“Abuse you?” Ron asked, apparently the only one left in complete shock. “Why’d we abuse you?” he added, thoroughly confused.

“Well because,” Harry started, looking over at Luna. “Because we’re sort of, erm, different,” he finished.

“Oh Harry,” Hermione said, “You should know by now that we’ll be happy for you no matter what, as long as you don’t marry a troll or something!” Everyone laughed.

Harry shook his head, thinking about how stupid he had been to hide such a wonderful thing for so long. “Yeah, you’re right; we’ll all be happy for each other. Ron has Abrielle, I’m happy. Hermione, well you don’t have anyone, but I’ll be happy whoever you find as long as it’s not…I dunno…Malfoy or something!” Everyone laughed again. Hermione shifted nervously, laughing as well. A pang of guilt stung her stomach and she felt like crying suddenly.

Later that night, after Hermione has slipped a note into Draco’s hand discretely, the two were walking out by the lake long after everyone had gone inside.

“Draco, Harry and Luna are together,” she said worriedly.

Draco snorted, “Are you serious?” he said, showing the Slytherin side of him. Hermione punched him in the arm.

“That’s not what I’m talking about!” she said impatiently. “I’m just saying that they made some remark about being happy for me no matter who I was with as long as it wasn’t…well, as long as it wasn’t you.” She stared up at him and he sighed. He took her swiftly in his arms.

“Why do you care what they think, Hermione?” he asked her, his cold gray eyes penetrating hers.

“They’re like my brothers and you know that,” Hermione said, feeling especially disgruntled, the mood lightened only by the fact that she was in her favorite boy’s arms. She kissed him briefly on the lips, something he loved.

“I know, Hermione, but did you ever stop to think that if they love you they will accept you no matter what?” he asked her. His gentle tone still never failed to surprise her after hearing nothing but malice for years. She recovered; she cleared her throat.

“You’re one to speak; if your parents loved you, they’d do the same, right?” Hermione said, eyes narrowed.

Draco scowled at her suddenly, releasing her and speaking directly to her face in a harsher tone. “I never said they loved me at all,” he said, dangerously icy.

“Draco,” Hermione said, “I was just trying to prove a point.” She snuggled close to him again and kissed his neck. “Don’t be so tense.”

The two spent the rest of the night gallivanting around the grounds. At about sunrise, they snuck off to a hidden patch of grass. Draco produced a blanket and they watched the sun rise together. They decided that they’d skip classes the next day, both claiming to be sick. After all, no one would expect them to have been out all night together; it was merely just a strange “coincidence.”

Hmm, the long awaited Chapter Twenty

Chapter Twenty

Harry and Luna spent all their time together publicly now. They weren’t sure why they had thought that everyone would abuse them; on the contrary, no one abused them. Everyone was only happy to see Harry and Luna happy….

Everyone, that is, except Abrielle. She had had a small crush on Harry and was pretty crushed now that he was publicly dating Luna Lovegood. Abrielle couldn’t reveal these feelings though; after all, she was still dating Ron. Speaking of which, things weren’t going so great. The two were always seen bickering at each other.

Ron had started to notice that Abrielle was acting withdrawn from him; he had also noticed that all they seemed to do was fight. Afraid that he was going to lose her, he cornered her in the hallway one day with Hermione.

“Erm, Hermione?” he began, “Can I have a minute with Abrielle, please?” he asked her.

Hermione nodded and said she’d see Abrielle later. So, just Ron and Abrielle were left in the hallway. “What’s up?” Abrielle said, averting her eyes.

Ron said, “Look at me.” She did so, and he continued on. “What’s going on with you? Something weird is happening,” he said. She stared at him and blinked. She didn’t know what she was supposed to say.

“Nothing, Ron,” she lied, smiling. Ron didn’t buy it.

“Abrielle, if something’s wrong, you can talk to me,” he said earnestly.

“No really,” Abrielle went on, “Nothing’s wrong. Come on, we have a class to go to.” She took his hand and led him off to Herbology with her and the rest of the seventh year Gryffindors. Once there, she began talking to Hermione animatedly, leaving Ron to talk to Harry.

“What’s up with her?” Ron asked, apparently mystified.

Harry furrowed his brow. “Who?” he asked confusedly.

“Abrielle,” Ron said, nodding towards her.

Harry didn’t seem to see anything wrong with her. She was hanging out with Hermione just like she always did. “Why, what’s wrong with her?” Harry asked, still confused.

Ron sighed. “Well, we hardly ever even talk; all she does is hang out with Hermione. Harry, she talks to YOU more than she does me. And every time we do talk it’s just a fight,” he said. He frowned and continued potting his magical plant.

Harry glanced over at Ron and saw how upset he was. “Everyone has rough spots, Ron. I expect you two will be fine. Just wait for it to all blow over, mate.”

Ron nodded, but inside he was wondering why Abrielle had suddenly changed. What had he done wrong? He really didn’t want to lose her, but that’s what it seemed like was going to happen. She wouldn’t even talk to him. He really didn’t know what he was supposed to do.

Chapter Twenty-One

Ron and Abrielle’s rough spot continued on for quite a few days. Meanwhile, Draco and Hermione were doing everything they could to keep their relationship secret. Hermione had no clue why Harry and Luna had kept their relationship a secret; it looked canon compared to Draco and Hermione’s.

One specifically cold day, a day before a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin, Draco and Hermione found themselves in the Room of Requirement. They had gotten the idea from Harry and Luna’s stories of meeting there to see each other secretly before their relationship was public. Hermione was curled into Draco’s arms, and they were lying together on a very comfortable looking couch. They were playfully debating about the Quidditch match.

“Well, Slytherin will obviously get beat by Gryffindor. They have yet to make a broom that can outstrip Harry’s Firebolt and he’s had it since third year,” Hermione bragged, defending her house.

Draco scoffed, “Potter may have a good broom, but I’m the better Seeker.”

Hermione, not wanting to start an argument, though she knew she thought Harry to be a better Seeker, said, “Yes, dear, you’re a very good Seeker indeed!” Draco awarded her with a kiss on the head. She smiled, looking up at him, her eyes full of love.

“I never liked flying much,” Hermione admitted in a quiet voice.

Draco’s eyes widened. “How can you not like flying?” he asked her incredulously.

“I don’t much care for heights,” Hermione explained timidly.

Draco laughed, “Heights? Why would heights scare you?”

She shrugged, “They just do, okay?” She punched him lightly in the arm. He looked at her reproachfully, and she made it up to him with a small kiss.

Something had been bothering Hermione. It was inevitable; this time had to come with the way their relationship was. It had to of been bothering Draco as well, she thought. If he cared anything for her it would be.

“Draco,” she began hesitantly.

“Yes?” he asked, looking down at her interestedly.

“I was wondering if….” she cut herself off and looked down at her feet. She was scared to ask him about it. She took a deep breath and continued on. “I was wondering if it had been bothering you, us being a secret.”

Draco took a deep breath. It had been bothering him, but they had no choice; they were stuck the way they were. “Yeah it has, Hermione, but we don’t have much of a choice….” He trailed off, feeling thoroughly hopeless.

“Draco, eventually, if we plan to take this relationship anywhere, we’re going to have to tell people,” Hermione said reasonably.

Draco knew what she said was ringing with the truth. “I know, Hermione, but we don’t have a choice right now. We have to wait until things calm down.”

“Things are never going to calm down, Draco,” she said icily. She looked him dead in the face.

“Do you love me?”

“I do,” he said.

“Are you ashamed of me?”

“I’m not,” he said.

“Then we’re okay for now.”

“Good,” he replied.

Chapter Twenty-Two

As fall slowly turned to winter, Hogwarts was reaching its maximum capacity of secrets. Abrielle secretly was crushed that Harry and Luna were going out. Harry and Luna were secretly falling deeper and deeper for each other, though everyone knew of their relationship. Ginny was secretly wanting to break up with Neville; he’d become far too boring for her, sadly. And of course, Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy had the biggest, most scandalous secret of all….

Hermione felt very odd indeed heading towards the dungeons, not for Potions, but to secretly meet Draco. The Slytherin common room was to be deserted, but just in case it wasn’t, Hermione had secretly borrowed Harry’s invisibility cloak. Draco had given her the password, and so she muttered it quietly as she reached the entrance. She walked in, and, indeed, the common room was empty. She made her way to the boys’ dormitories; she knew where they were upon Draco’s instructions.

She slowly opened the door to the seventh year boys’ dormitories. Draco wasn’t there yet, so Hermione made herself comfortable on the bed at which Draco’s trunk was positioned. She decided she might poke around a little bit, sure she’d find nothing of any sort of harm. She opened a drawer of his bedside table and saw a few photos of Draco and his parents. She saw a crumpled up piece of parchment and her brows furrowed. She picked it up and unrolled it, wondering why it had been crumpled, apparently in anger. She read it and her eyes began to widen.

A bride? What did they mean they had found him a bride? Hermione couldn’t control herself. Her eyes were searching fleetingly around the room, apparently searching for an answer. Suddenly, Draco came through the door and smiled at the sight of Hermione. However, when he spotted the wrinkled piece of parchment in her hands, his face slowly shifted to an unmistakable frown.
