Chapter Ten

Regardless of his feelings, Draco was still a Malfoy; he liked to be elaborate. He didn’t know how he was going to tell her how he felt. He knew it had to be secret, but he still wanted it to be special; after all she was a very special person.

He racked his brains for days. Their next Potions class came and went without trouble. The whole class was so surprised. Hermione noticed, but Draco didn’t notice a thing at all. All he was processing in his brain for about a week were ideas about how to let Hermione Granger know that he had fallen for her.

Any normal Malfoy would have sent her some expensive gift; however, Hermione wouldn’t even think that was special. She was way beyond money. She was into that heart-to-heart thing. She would love something touching, which was just the thing that Draco had hardly any experience with.

He wanted to make her extremely happy. Just before they were supposed to meet to do their next essay, it came to him. It was simple, but touching. It wasn’t elaborate, but he had long since decided that Hermione wouldn’t want elaborate things. She wanted something simple. So, he got a simple piece of parchment, tore off a simple corner and wrote a little note. He summoned one of Hermione’s books that he knew she would be taking. He looked in the index, found the pages they would be looking at, stuck the note in there and sent it whizzing back to her dorm room, and just in time too. Hermione walked out of the bathroom after a shower, picked up the book, put it in her bag, and she was off to the library to meet Draco Malfoy.

When she got there, she was surprised as she was the first time they met, to see him sitting down in the library early with a table to himself. He wore a smirk that told her that he was in a good mood.

“Well hello, Draco,” Hermione said pleasantly.

“Hello Hermione,” Draco returned.

Hermione was prepared to get started right away. “Well, okay. So our essay this week is on the Drought of Living Death. Let me see, I need to figure out the page number…” Hermione began scanning her table of contents in the book that had been in Draco’s hands just minutes before. Draco’s heart was beating so fast; it had never beat at such a rate.

“Here we are,” said Hermione, opening up to the page. Her eyes became confused at first. She picked up the note and read it under her breath.

Hermione,
I have figured something out recently. I wasted seven years making your life miserable when all I want to do now is make it wonderful. Give me a chance; I believe I can.

Draco

Hermione stared at the small piece of paper for several minutes. Finally, she looked up at Draco. He was wearing a small grin which faded when he saw Hermione’s uncomfortable facial expression.

“Well, that’s very sweet of you Draco…” Hermione began, but he already knew where this was heading.

He sighed, “I knew it was too soon; you don’t feel the same, right?” His question was filled with the pain of his first heartbreak.

Hermione stared at him. “I don’t know what I feel, but right now I can’t say I do.” She was so embarrassed and felt so bad that she got out of her seat and left, her eyes full of tears. She didn’t know what she was supposed to do. She headed straight up to her dorm room and stayed there for the remainder of the night.

Hey everyone. Well yes, even though Draco did give Hermione hell for six years, he is trying very hard, and that's why I feel very much sympathy for him. For one, he never opened his heart up to anyone & imagine what it must feel like to finally do it & then be crushed. Anywho, new post will be sometime tonight hopefully (:

Chapter Eleven

Hermione felt awful. She didn’t know what else she was supposed to do, though. She didn’t feel for Draco the way he had begun to feel about her, and it was better to be honest right?

“Oh bugger,” she said to herself. “Now I doubt he is even going to be civil and nice to me anymore.” This was probably true; why would Draco even bother anymore?

However, the next day when they had Herbology together, he discretely smiled at her and she did so back. She couldn’t help but wonder why he would want to take the time to smile at her. She figured he would hate her with a passion again. She just didn’t know what to make of all this.

Meanwhile, Harry was feeling very depressed. He hardly ever got the time of day to speak to Ron and Hermione anymore and if he did, it was either about Malfoy and the trouble he was giving her or not giving her, or it was with Abrielle standing there with them. He was sitting outside on a bench wearing a light jacket. It was starting to get a bit colder; October was coming. Suddenly, Luna Lovegood made her way over to him after coming through the great oak doors onto the grounds.

“Hello Harry!” she said merrily.

“Hey Luna,” Harry said, depressed that the only one who had time for him was Luna.

Luna frowned, “What’s wrong with you?”

Harry sighed, “Nothing.”

“Nothing?” Luna raised her eyebrows, “I don’t think so!” She sat down next to him and poked him. “Just go on and tell me; you know you’re going to in the end anyways.”

Harry contemplated this. It was probably true, so he just told her. “I just feel like Ron and Hermione are always super busy now and, I mean, it’s our seventh year and we never talk anymore. What am I supposed to do?” he said. He couldn’t help but get annoyed in the middle of his monologue that they were doing this.

Luna frowned yet again, “I’m sorry, Harry.” She reached over and patted Harry’s hand to comfort him and something strange ignited in Harry’s stomach; it was almost like his stomach did a flip. Luna had felt it too; Harry could tell by the expression on her face.

Harry looked away. “Erm, well maybe I should go,” he said awkwardly.

Luna shook her head, “Why would you go?”

Harry looked at her point blank in the face. “It was just kind of,” Harry searched for the right word, “Awkward, wasn’t it?”

Luna, however, shrugged. “I thought it was kind of lovely.” Harry stared at her and smiled. She was right, it was kind of lovely.

“You’re right Luna. And you know what else?” he asked her.

“What?” Luna asked excitedly.

“You’re pretty lovely, too.”

Chapter Twelve

From that moment on, Harry and Luna had a thing for each other. It was such a secret, and what a secret it was, because no one would ever expect such a thing. They would spend time together in that infamous free period that they happened to have together. Harry felt so odd; he would have never expected to end up with Luna, but he was admittedly very happy he had.

Draco and Hermione were a whole different story. Hermione was confused and out of her mind; she didn’t know what she was supposed to do about the whole situation. Draco couldn’t help but keep falling deeper and deeper for her. Everything had become almost awkward for them, but they still actually enjoyed their weekly meetings of doing homework. Draco enjoyed them, well, for obvious reasons. Hermione, however, enjoyed them because she genuinely loved seeing this nice side of Draco; he was becoming a good friend of hers.

Ron and Abrielle had begun a very public relationship. Harry, one day about a week into October, told the two to stop flirting and just admit they fancy each other. They both laughed at this and then agreed they did. The next day, Ron Weasley and Abrielle Haynes were the talk of the school. “What a cute couple…” everyone said. Some jealous third years, however, made it a point to walk by Abrielle and say, “Well, she is definitely not pretty enough for him.” To this, Ron and Abrielle just laughed. They immensely enjoyed being around each other and treasured every kiss and touch they shared.

Then, there was Ginny Weasley. After years of fancying Harry, she was done. She felt something was distracting him, even from Ron and Hermione. This could have been because of the fact that they were both always so busy, but Ginny had a feeling Harry had something going on too. No, Ginny’s eye was on someone else…someone she never thought she’d be attracted to. She didn’t want to tell anyone that she was suddenly fancying Draco Malfoy….

As Halloween drew nearer, Hermione found herself in the library with Draco, a stack of books blocking them from anyone’s view.

“Well we both know it’s the most powerful love potion in the world,” Hermione said carelessly. Her hair kept falling into her face and it was rather annoying her. She kept pushing it back and, again and again, it would only fall back into her face. Draco saw her getting distressed and produced a small rubber band with his wand in which he tied up Hermione’s hair. “Thank you,” she said breathlessly, happy to have her hair out of her face.

“It’s not a problem,” Draco said, staring into her honey brown eyes.

Hermione smiled. “Okay, so Amortentia…” But Draco didn’t want to work anymore.

“I’m sick of Amortentia,” he said bluntly, although his mind clearly read: I wish I had some. Maybe then she’d half-fancy me.

Hermione nodded, “Yeah, let’s take a break.” So, the two began talking about non-academic things, such as family, friends, hobbies, and such. About half way through their conversation, Hermione got an odd feeling in her stomach. She thought she was going to be sick. “Don’t be silly, Hermione,” she told herself in her mind. “Those are just the butterflies.” Suddenly it hit her. Draco Malfoy had just given her butterflies. What could that possibly mean?

A couple of hours later, the two finished their essay. They left the library and were headed towards their respective common rooms. Draco was headed to his when he ran into none other than Ginny Weasley.

“Watch out, Weasley,” Draco said in his usual cold voice that only changed when he was around a certain bushy haired female.

“Erm, Draco…” Ginny began. “Could I have a word?”

“Draco?” Draco said in his head. Why would she be calling him by his first name? Confused, he walked over with her.

“What do you want?” he asked, again coldly.

“I was wondering if you were, erm, seeing anyone.” Ginny asked timidly.

Draco’s eyes opened wider than they ever had, even when he realized he was falling for Hermione Granger. “What are you talking about?” he asked quite rudely.

She had an odd expression on her face; she had expected that sort of reaction. “I was just thinking; well I have been noticing that you are rather, erm, attractive.” She was flushed a brilliant red color that clashed with her hair.

Draco shifted awkwardly where he stood. “Look Weasley,” he said, his tone not changing much. “I’m not seeing anyone, but I can’t get my mind off of someone, so please…step aside and let me go back to my common room.”

Ginny Weasley looked crushed. She nodded and walked off. When she got back to the Gryffindor Common Room, who did she run into, but Hermione Granger.

Chapter Thirteen

Hermione saw that Ginny looked rather upset. She was immediately worried about one of her best friends; the only good girlfriend she had, anyway. “Gin, what’s wrong?” she said hurriedly.

Ginny asked Hermione, “Can you just come upstairs to my dorm with me? I don’t want any nosy people overhearing.” Hermione nodded and they walked up the stairs to the sixth year girls’ dorms.

Ginny closed the door behind her, sat down on her bed, and hung her head. She wasn’t crying; she was ashamed that she had been so stupid as to go after a Malfoy.

“Hermione,” she said. “I’m so stupid.”

Hermione frowned. “No you’re not, Ginny. What’s wrong?”

Ginny frowned as well. “I went after Malfoy. I told Malfoy he was attractive. I went after him….”

Hermione’s mouth dropped. “What did he say?” she asked immediately.

“He said,” Ginny began, her voice dropping. “He said he wasn’t seeing anyone, but he couldn’t get his mind off of a certain someone, and apparently that certain someone wasn’t me. I’m not all that torn up about it; I just thought he was good looking, but I feel really stupid that I approached Malfoy like that. Ron’s going to kill me when he finds out….”

But Hermione was no longer listening. Her stomach was doing flip-flops. She was so excited. Draco still wanted to be with her. Suddenly, she sprang off of Ginny’s bed, leaving the redhead with a strange, confused look on her face.

“Hermione, what are you doing?” she asked in a worried tone.

“Ginny, do you know what this means?” she exclaimed.

Ginny furrowed her brow. “What does it mean, Hermione?”

Hermione smiled. “He still loves me!” With that, she let out a girlish shriek that had never been heard coming from Hermione’s body. Ginny was wide eyed and confused.

“Malfoy?” she asked.

“Yes! Ginny, I have to tell you. You can’t tell anyone. He wanted to be with me, okay? He said he did. But I told him I didn’t feel the same because I didn’t. But now, I think I’m honestly starting to. I’m not sure; but I wasn’t sure if he still wanted to be with me. I’m sorry he said no to you Ginny, but you have just helped me out.”

At first, Ginny’s face was full of shock. It quickly turned into a huge grin. “Hermione! You like Malfoy?!” she screamed.

“Shh!” Hermione exclaimed. “I don’t need people hearing about this and going on about it!”

From that moment on, Ginny Weasley never would have thought of going after Draco Malfoy. From that moment on, Ginny Weasley knew Hermione Granger’s every secret. Ginny and Hermione became even closer friends. Harry and Ron couldn’t know a lot of the things going on with Hermione, and Ginny accepted her for what she was.

From that moment on, things for Hermione Granger changed.
