Chapter Five

Draco Malfoy paced back and forth in the cold, dark, musty Slytherin Common Room. He had been so mean. He felt bad, but he had to do it. He had to distance himself from her for both of their well beings. He heard the entrance to the Common Room swing open and in walked Pansy Parkinson.

“Hey Drakie,” she said, in that annoying little tone.

Draco groaned inside his head. “Hello Pansy.”

She smiled a disgusting smile at him as she approached him and ran her hand along his back. “How have you been today? I’m sorry you had to go through that torture of spending time with Hermione Granger.”

“Pansy, get your hands off my back and go hose yourself down or something.” Draco said, disgusted. He walked away into the seventh year boys’ dorm, leaving Pansy utterly distraught.

In his dorm, Draco sat down on his four-poster bed and drew the curtains closed. He sighed. “This can’t be,” he thought to himself, “How can I feel bad for making her feel bad? I have done this for seven years! Why can’t I just keep going one more year so I don’t ever have to see her again?”

Draco slowly drifted into a sleep which included a horrible dream. He dreamed that Voldemort was chasing him because he was befriending Hermione Granger, friend of Harry Potter. He was lying to Voldemort, telling him he was only getting closer to Harry for him, his Master. Voldemort knew he was lying somehow. “How does he always know we’re lying?” Dream Draco wondered. Draco was running, Voldemort was flying, and Draco was just too slow. Hermione was at the end of a long hall and Draco was screaming for his best friend to help him. “My best friend?” Dream Draco asked himself. But still, he was pleading, begging her to save him. She just kept saying no because he called her a Mudblood and made her cry.

Suddenly, Draco awoke and was drenched in sweat. Crabbe and Goyle were hanging over him like hawks. “Are you okay?” Crabbe said thickly. “You were groaning; something about ‘Help me…you’re my best friend, help me!’”

Draco stuttered, “I—I j-just had a bad d-dream that’s all.” He regained his composure, Hermione’s emotionless face still burned into his memory from his dream. As soon as Crabbe and Goyle had left, he grabbed a piece of parchment and summoned his owl over. He wrote:

Dear Hermione,

I’m sorry for what I said and the way I acted. I just had an awful dream and sometimes dreams remind you that you don’t have to be so cruel for no apparent reason. I understand if you don’t want to be friends, or even acquaintances, but I hope we can just be civil enough to be Lab Partners. Sorry, I’m a git sometimes.

Draco Malfoy

He attached the letter to his owl’s foot and told her where to go. She was off into the night, and Draco was left to attempt to fall back to sleep.

Aw thank you very much, hun. You're so sweet. Well I hope I am talented cuz I hope to be a writer when I'm older. Well I mean specifically I wanna work @ a magazine (Teen Vogue!), but I wanna write books on the side. That's why JK Rowling is my biggest inspiration & Hero. (:

Chapter Six

Hermione was awakened in the middle of the night by a steady pecking on her window. “Huh?” she said groggily, in her sleep. Finally, she started to wake up, hoping the other girls in her dorm weren’t bothered.

The culprit owl was one that Hermione didn’t recognize. It wasn’t Hedwig, it wasn’t Pig, well, she didn’t even think it was a school owl. The owl was pitch black with bright orange eyes, and it was a large, respectable owl, like Hedwig. Hermione opened the window and took the note telling the owl to wait there, as she didn’t have an owl. She opened the letter confusedly and read it.

When she finished and saw it was from Malfoy, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Here it was, living proof that Draco Malfoy apologized to her, and she didn’t want to go rub it in his face. She wanted to write him back; so she did.

Dear Draco,

I understand that after seven years of hating each other, we won’t be able to be best friends, especially not right off the bat. But hopefully we can put our differences aside so we both don’t fail Potions. I’m not saying we won’t have more fights than just this one, but we have to learn to look past it for the sake of our marks. Thank you for your apology. I’m sorry for being “the biggest know-it-all ever.”

She sighed, in disbelief that a nice letter was going on to this owl from Hermione to Draco. It was just so crazy how much things have to change when they are forced to. Had they not become Lab Partners, they would still be hating each other, scowling at each other every day, but as Hermione drifted back to sleep, she thought that maybe things would change. As Draco said, they didn’t have to be best friends or even acquaintances, but they could at least be civil. That’s all Hermione wanted at the moment: a civil Lab Partner.

Chapter Seven

“Ronald Weasley!” Professor McGonagall called, walking into the Gryffindor Common Room.

“Yes Professor?” Ron asked, hoping he wasn’t in some kind of trouble.

She had a girl with her that Ron didn’t recognize, a very pretty girl. “We have a new Gryffindor here, she is from Australia. Seeing as you’re a Gryffindor Prefect, I thought perhaps you could show her the ropes around here. She is a seventh year; you’ll have all the same classes as her…”

“That would be fine Professor,” Ron said politely. Professor McGonagall left the Common Room and Ron said, “So what’s your name?”

With an Australian accent she said, “I’m Abrielle.”

“Well hello Abrielle, I’m Ron Weasley, you might have heard McGonagall screeching about it,” he laughed and so did she.

“So you’re from Australia are you?” Ron said. He wasn’t sure where he was getting the sudden burst of confidence but Abrielle seemed to be enjoying it. He decided he liked it too.

“Yeah, we lived in Sydney. That’s where the school was,” she said.

“Oh, did you like the school there?” Ron asked, liking talking to her.

She smiled, “Yes, I loved it. I miss my friends quite a bit.”

“Well,” Ron began, “If you liked that school, you’re going to love Hogwarts, especially since you’re a Gryffindor. We’re pretty much the best house, don’t go bragging though.” He laughed along with her. “We’re going to be late if we don’t hurry. Let’s get down to breakfast, our food is some of the best you can find, trust me. I spend half my time here eating.”

“Sounds good…I’m starving,” she said as her stomach grumbled. They both laughed at the loud noise it made. Abrielle was happy to have made a friend; Ron was too, a very pretty friend at that.

The two walked to the Great Hall, talking about various things. Hermione was pushed out of Ron’s mind which was probably for the best….

Meanwhile, Hermione was just waking, realizing that she had slept late, dreaming a most fantastic dream. She hurried out of bed, magically did her hair, brushed her teeth, and pulled on her robes. She hurried to the Great Hall, wanting to fit some breakfast in before she had to go to class. Her first class today, she was trying to remember on her way to the Great Hall, had to be Charms…Double Charms with the Ravenclaws. She entered the Great Hall and spotted Ron with a girl she didn’t recognize. She sat down next to them and said, “Hello Ron. Who’s this?”

“This is Abrielle,” Ron said, “She’s from Australia.”

Hermione wondered why Ron sounded like he was bragging. “Oh, hello Abrielle, welcome to Hogwarts.”

“Professor McGonagall asked me to show her around the school,” Ron said, again in a rather boastful tone.

“Ron…” Hermione began, “Congratulations on getting to lead Abrielle around but, excuse me, why do you sound as though you’re…boasting or something?” Hermione questioned. She was rather confused.

Ron turned a brilliant shade of red that clashed awfully with his hair. “Boasting? No, I’m just happy I’ve been trusted to show her around?” Ron said uncertainly. He needed to work on being harder to read. Abrielle giggled, thinking that Ron definitely must have a thing for this Hermione girl.

“Okay…anyways, I’m off to class. See both of you there,” with that, Hermione left with a smile.

Abrielle giggled again. “What?” Ron asked.

“Do you two have a thing?” she asked.

“No, we’ve just been best friends since first year; me, Hermione, and Harry.” Ron said.

“Harry Potter?” Abrielle asked.

Ron sighed, “Yes, the famous Harry Potter, that’s the one.”

“Wow,” Abrielle sighed in amazement. “What’s he like?”

Ron smiled, “He’s—he’s just Harry. You’ll meet him in our first class. He’s a great guy.” Ron finished.

With that, the two got up from the table and walked to class: Double Charms with the Ravenclaws, Abrielle looking at various things in the castle that Ron usually overlooked, being so used to seeing them everyday.

“This could be interesting,” Ron thought to himself, again thinking about how very pretty this new student was.

Chapter Eight

That night, Hermione found herself at the library again. This time, she was early and waiting on Draco to get there so they could, hopefully, finish their Potions work for the week. Upon seeing him arrive, Hermione gave him an apprehensive smile which was returned with a slight twitch of the mouth, the closest Draco could get to a smile at Hermione.

“Hello Malfoy,” Hermione said pleasantly.

“Hello Granger,” he replied, civilly.

Hermione sighed, internally hoping that this would go well. She just wanted to get along with him for her grades’ sake. “Are you ready to do this assignment? We have a lot of ground to cover,” she said truthfully.

He groaned, “Yeah, I guess. Potions isn’t exactly the sugar that sweetens my tea, but I guess we have to do it.”

Hermione couldn’t believe they had something in common. “Yeah, Potions gets on my nerves too.” They began research again on the topic of the essay and got a lot more done. When they were finally finished at nine o’clock that night, Draco sighed. “Well, that’s all I guess…till next week anyways.”

Hermione laughed softly. “Yeah, till next week. Snape can be a bother sometimes with the loads of homework he gives,” she said nervously, afraid that Draco would get mad about her talking about Snape.

Instead, he nodded. “Sometimes I wonder why he does give so much,” Malfoy agreed. The two sat in silence for a few minutes and then Hermione cleared her throat.

“Well, hey, I really need to be getting back up to Gryffindor Tower; I’ve got other homework to catch up on; I’ve got a book I’ve been reading as well so…I guess I’ll see you in class then?”

He nodded, “Yeah, I’ll see you in class Granger.” The two stood up; Hermione picked up their essay and put it in her bag. They nodded at each other and were off to their separate common rooms.

When Hermione arrived back into the Gryffindor Common Room, Harry and Ron were sitting on the sofa with Abrielle. Harry asked, “How’d it go with Malfoy tonight?”

Hermione sighed, “It was alright. He actually didn’t call me a Mudblood or insult me once. He was civil; that’s all I asked for.”

With this, she went up to bed and fell right asleep, forgetting the book she was supposed to be reading. All she could think about is the nod that Draco had given her that she had returned before they left the library. It was like some unspoken agreement between the two; it was almost like a truce after seven years of turmoil. Finally, Hermione felt at peace with the situation.
