Albus entered the transfiguration classroom before Professor Bell even had time to clear away the canaries her third year class had conjured. He took a seat in the back corner, feeling exhausted. The school year had just begun and already so much had happened.
He took out his book and quill, and started doodling absentmindedly as he waited for class to start. As other students filed in, he was relieved to see that Gryffindor shared this lesson with Ravenclaw - no more Slytherins.
Soon, the whole crew was assembled and Albus had to give up his doodling. He looked up to see Sean smiling at him, and he was instantly suspicious.
"So……what happened to you and yer girl in Potions, eh?" Sean whispered as he took a seat next to Albus.
Albus stared at him, his mouth agape. His girl? What is Sean thinking??! "Wha-whaa-w-" he started to reply, but was cut off by Professor Bell.
"Good morning, first years!" she said, clapping her hands once and smiling warmly at them all. The canaries were gone and the classroom filled again with eager students, most of the Ravenclaws sitting at close to the Professor as possible.
"Transfiguration is a useful subject to master, with so many spells relating to it," she nodded and quickly tapped her desk with her wand. The mahogany desk changed into a rotund walrus and back with another tap, so fast that if Albus had blinked he would have missed it.
"And as you can see," Bell continued nonchalantly, "transfiguration is impressive, useful, and hard to learn if you don't pay close attention, Ms. Davies," she added, turning her head sharply to stare down a Ravenclaw first year.
Albus recognized the girl from the train - Kimberly Davies! Apparently, she had been reading something under the table and not listening to the professor. Once reprimanded, however, she blushed a lovely shade of pale pink and quietly stowed the magazine in her bag.
Albus turned to grin at Sean, amused at the way his friend had sat up straighter when Professor Bell pointed out Kim. She was a pretty girl, with long black hair, pale, freckled skin, and bright blue eyes. And clearly, Sean had a little infatuation going on…
Transfiguration went smoothly after that little incident, and Albus even earned Gryffindor five points for being the first to transfigure his toothpick into a needle. Class ended on a happy note for Albus, and after class, he trudged up to the owlery with Sean. Time to send a letter home… | |
